DAVID TENNANT ROLES STARTERPACK
(Different roles, where to find them and what they're like!!!) (+ more that I didn't go into included at the end)
*disclaimer: this is sort of UK orientated, 'cos I don't know any American streaming services or where stuff is available in other countries, so PLEASE comment other places you can watch things!!!!
- Takin' Over the Asylum (CAMPBELL BAIN)
Follows a DJ and a group of patients trying to keep a radio station going in a mental hospital. David plays one of the main characters, Campbell Bain, a mostly upbeat and energetic young boy with lots of enthusiasm and spirit. Some angst!
☆ YOUTUBE (free)
- Blackpool (PETER CARLISLE)
A body is found in an arcade run by Ripley Holden, and him and his entire family are pulled into the murder investigation surrounding it. DI Peter Carlisle is working on the case, and highly suspicious of Ripley. He's a pretty major character and has a romantic plot - as well as a few funny musical numbers. Includes sex scenes.
☆ UKTV PLAY (free in UK), AMAZON PRIME VIDEO
- Casanova (GIACOMO CASANOVA)
The (mostly sexual) adventures of Giacomo Casanova, a charming and fraudulent man who falls in love very quickly and very dramatically with a lot of people, all while essentially bullshitting through life and jumping on every opportunity to make money. Includes sex scenes but also angst, such as illness, injuries, some violence, and general suffering.
☆ MYFLIXERX.TO (free), AMAZON
- Recovery (ALAN HAMILTON)
A man and his family coping with the recovery and rehabilitation process after he (Alan, David Tennant) suffers from brain damage. Angsty. Lots of crying, suicide references, head injury stuff.
☆ YOUTUBE (free)
- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (BARTY CROUCH JR)
I recommend pirating this one so you're not supporting JK Rowling. DT plays Barty Crouch JR, an antagonist and the son of Barty Crouch. He's kind of a minor character, as he's not actually in a lot of scenes.
☆ Probably on most pirating sites (my go to is MYFLIXERX.TO)
- Learners (CHRISTOPHER ??)
Lighthearted movie about a woman trying to pass her driving test. David plays Chris, her driving instructor. He's a bit of a dork, very sweet and kind. Has a love plot, briefly fights a guy. No major angst.
☆ YOUTUBE (free)
- Hamlet (HAMLET)
Hamlet. Prince of Denmark wants vengeance after his father's death. I haven't actually watched this one yet but I assume it's got the same amount of angst and drama as Hamlet typically does.
☆ AMAZON PRIME VIDEO
- Single Father (DAVE TYLER)
After a fatal car accident, Dave Tyler (DT) is left to parent four children on his own. Still struggling through grief, Dave falls in love again and attempts to hide it. Has LOTS of crying, lots of kissing, sex scenes, DT being miserable and sobbing, etc.
☆ MYFLIXERX.TO (free)
- Rex Is Not Your Lawyer (REX ALEXANDER)
Unaired pilot. Only 40 minutes. Show wasn't picked up, but it is very good. Rex is a successful and skilled lawyer who is forced to stop practising when he starts having panic attacks every time he speaks in court. He decides instead to coach people who want to represent themselves. Lots of DT in very tight suits. American accent. Not MAJOR angst but he does has daddy issues and a panic disorder, so.
☆ YOUTUBE (free)
- Fright Night (PETER VINCENT)
A kid discovers that his neighbour is a vampire, and he seeks out a famous vampire slayer to help him. Peter Vincent (DT) does not live up to his name, and turns out to actually be sort of pathetic. No major angst, not a lot of clothes, no romance, but lots of eyeliner. He's very bisexual. Violence, vampire horror, creepy neighbour.
☆ DISNEY+, AMAZON PRIME
- The Decoy Bride (JAMES ARBER)
Celebrity Lara Tyler tries to get married to her author fiancé James Arber, but the paparazzi interrupts the wedding. Desperate to keep it private, she takes James to the island that he based his book on. Somehow, the paparazzi still find them, and they hire a decoy bride to pretend to be Lara. Romance, kissing, light hearted, minimal angst. David in a funny outfit. Fake dating trope?
☆ AMAZON PRIME
- Nativity 2: Danger in the Manger (Donald and Roderick Peterson)
Sequel to Nativity, but you don't need to watch the first one. Primary school teacher Donald Peterson (DT) is forced to take his class to Wales to participate in A Song For Christmas, a festive singing competition. Here he is put against his twin brother, who is a successful composer and with whom he has a strained relationship. Light angst - lots of daddy issues, but generally sweet.
☆ AMAZON, I think its on NOW TV???
- The Escape Artist (WILL BURTON)
A defence lawyer, Will Burton, gets a murderer off free, and very quickly grows to regret it, when his client comes after his family next. Lots of murder. Like three murders I think. Hot lawyer DT.
☆ AMAZON (I can't believe I forgot this one)
- What We Did On Our Holiday (DOUG MCLEOD)
A family go to Scotland for their grandfather's 70th birthday. Doug (DT) and his wife (Rosamund Pike) are getting a divorce, but are hiding it from the rest of the family. Movie is mostly focused on the kids and their grandad, but David has a few moments, and he's generally present throughout. Funny, slightly shocking at times, family film. No major angst. Character death.
☆ AMAZON PRIME
- Richard II (RICHARD II)
Shakespeare's Richard II. David plays the titular character, the extravagant, heartless and cold King of England, Richard II. We see his fall from grace as he is stripped of everything he owns and knows. Quite angsty. Long hair, androgynous David. Queer kiss scene (although they are cousins, soo...)
☆ you can find a link in a REDDIT comment if you search for it, AMAZON PRIME
- Broadchurch (ALEC HARDY)
An eleven-year-old boy is murdered in a small town, sending shock-waves through the community. Story follows both the family and communities response to the crime, as well as the investigation done by DI Alec Hardy (DT) and DS Ellie Miller (Olivia Coleman). Lots of angst from Alec. He is sick and hiding it. Injury, dizziness, panic attacks, that sort of thing - as well as a heart attack. He has a lot of trauma and daddy issues. Season three touches on topics of rape (warning).
- Mad To Be Normal (RD LIANG)
Biopic about RD Liang, a Scottish psychiatrist. Sex, misogyny, mental health topics, some self-harm (done by another character)
☆ AMAZON (sensing a pattern)
- Good Omens (CROWLEY)
An angel (Michael Sheen) and a demon work together to stop the end of the world. Queer romance (canon), some angst. Drama, comedy, LGBTQ+. David plays Crowley, the demon (who "sauntered vaguely downwards" rather than fell from heaven)
☆ AMAZON PRIME
- Staged (DAVID TENNANT)
A COVID lockdown comedy about David Tennant and Michael Sheen talking via Zoom during the lockdown. Actually quite sad at times? Mostly silly, though. Features Georgia Tennant and Anna Lundberg.
☆ BBC Iplayer (UK) (or VPN)
- Around The World in 80 Days (PHILEAS FOGG)
Phileas Fogg, a quiet and reserved man, decides to travel around the world in 80 days, after he receives an anonymous postcard calling him a coward. Cute found family, drama, angst (ex-lover stuff, internalised cowardice, illness, near death experience), some violence. There's a scene where Phileas gets flogged (whipped, essentially) quite violently, and it's somewhat graphic. Touches on themes of racism. Phileas is 100% neurodivergent.
☆ BBC Iplayer (UK) (or VPN)
- Inside Man (HARRY WATLING)
DT plays a vicar, Harry, who is involved in a murder after trying to protect his son - who was accused of having CP. Suicide themes, murder, self-harm - explores the idea that any person can murder, if they're pushed the right way. Includes topics to do with CP and pedophilia.
☆ NETFLIX, AMAZON
- Litvinenko (LITVINENKO)
Biopic about Alexander Litvinenko. A group of detectives investigate the poisoning of Litvinenko. David is bald in this show. (Scary)
☆ ITVX (UK) (or VPN)
- Doctor who (10TH AND 14TH DOCTORS)
Do I need to explain Doctor Who???? David Tennant plays the tenth and fourteenth regenerations of The Doctor, a Time Lord from outerspace. He travels around in the TARDIS with human companions.
☆ BBC Iplayer (UK)
I think I'm gonna leave it there, but there are a LOT that I have not touched on. This post is a very accurate and long list of everything on DT's filmography, so i recommend you check that out.
Other things I didn't mention (off the top of my head):
There She Goes, Bad Samaritan, Einstein and Eddington, Rab. C Nesbitt, Bright Young Things, LA Without a Map, Much Ado About Nothing, Duck Patrol, True Love, Gracepoint, Camping (US), Nan's Christmas Carol, Mary Queen of Scots, (You, Me and Him), Secret Smile, Deadwater Fell, Jessica Jones, Dramarama, Spies of Warsaw, AND A LOT MORE. (+ voice acting roles, and also his narrating work on Spy In The Wild (2017)

Star Trek TOS S1 Ep3 Where No Man Has Gone Before
This episode had highs and lows but the best part was Spock being all "One of my ancestors married a human female"
You mean your fucking Dad!? Is that who you mean???? What the fuck
Third episode out of four (if you include the originally unaired pilot) that include brings with unimaginable god like powers but it was still fun.
Liked Gary calling Kirk a "walking stack of books" at the academy.
Hated how fucking creepy Gary was around women
WHERE THE FUCK WAS BONES
I feel like this was shown out of filming order.
Also when I was cheering Kirk telling the psychiatrist to back the fuck up and leave Spock alone I had to pause to have this conversation with my Teenager
Me: only Bones is allowed to yell at Spock
The Teen: are they dating? Is that why he gets to?
Me: oh no, see Kirk and Spock was the ship to launch modern fandom. Bones is also there. He's not dating either of them but he's involved in their relationship. He's like their third but he's just there to be pissed off and yell at them sometimes*
The Teen: I love that!
*just in relationship stuff. In practical he's the one bandaging them back together
Anyway onto the actual plot guy gets god like powers and becomes an asshole
I do like the moral dilemma and the actual story I like the growing tension and the effects and sometimes the actor playing Gary could be extremely unsettling
Other times it was goofy as fuck
When they were fighting my kid called the energy blast from the gun a Gayzer
They weren't wrong
Anyway ratings!
Story: 7.5/10 - rehashing storylines a little it feels like but still different enough to be good
Acting: 6/10 - it was really good in places and poor in others. William Shatner did actually a really good job though
Cheese: 8.5/10
Enjoyment: 7/10 - it was fun but had low moments
Effects: 4/10 - the cup on what was clearly fishing line killed me
Charm: 7/10 - really did have a good time with it
Cringe: -3.5/0 - everything Gary was creepy as fuck with Elizabeth made me cringe so hard
Aged Like Milk: -2/0 - the "walking freezer" comments were not great
Overall rating:
B Tier

Watching Stuff Day 16 - 7/22/2023 - Current Streak: 16
For today's thing I watched, I saw the unaired test pilot for Gravity Falls.
I've never seen the actual show before, and wanted to do it for today originally. Then I remembered hearing before that the test pilot was released publicly, and thought it would be interesting to watch it first and then watch the actual pilot the next day to compare and contrast.
So far, just off of the test pilot, I really like the artstyle and shading. It was really charming and soft looking, along with having very visually pleasing use of color. I think it has good character designs too, but based on images and clips I've seen from the actual show, I prefer those versions, especially when it comes to Stan's design. I was also surprised by how nice the animation looked. I thought it might look lower quality since this is just a test pilot, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
For the writing, I think it did a really good job with its plot and comedy. With the initial set-up given, I thought it was either going to end with Dipper being right about the guy being a zombie, or it being about how Dipper looks into things too deeply in a conspiratorial way and how he should be more trusting and accepting of people he deems weird, especially for the hapiness of his sister, Mabel.
I was not expecting them to go for a 3rd option of the guy being an even wilder third thing. I also do like how hime being a bunch of gnomes was foreshadowed by that being the page Dipper accidentally turned to when trying to explain his theory to Mabel. I genuinely didn't see any of that coming, and it definitely kept it interesting.
Another moment I really liked was their reactions to the main gnome guy. I thought it was funny how they immediately challenge him to violence and throw a shoe at him. They were real for that, trying to cut to the chase and avoid any gnome bs. I also liked how the actual solution with the riddle was a call back to the popsicle jokes at the beginning. It really gave the sense that there was a lot of planning and thought in the writing in order to have it all tie neatly together.
Overall, I really liked it and it made me even more eager to get into the real thing tomorrow.

Who should play Aquaman in the DCU?
December marks the release of the final DCEU project, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom starring Jason Mamoa and directed by James Wan. While Mamoa has won over many fans as the King of Atlantis with his charm, strength and fresh take on the character, it is more likely than not he will be replaced in James Gunn's upcoming DCU.
While he is not my favorite character in the DC Universe by any stretch, I think he is necessary to introduce the world to Atlantis and be a founding member of the Justice League. The world of Aquaman brings along new possibilities, enemies, and heroes I truly love.
I'd like to cast my ideal Aquaman for the DCU. I am slowly making my way through the Justice League to cast my ideal seven (look back on my page for Batman, The Flash, and Martian Manhunter).
My goal is to cast my seven before they are cast, and see how close to right I can get.
Before we cast as always, let's look back on our Aquaman to see what we can bring over to our new version.
Past Versions
While he has been played in live action in Smallville and an unaired pilot, there is really only one version worth mentioning.
Jason Mamoa as Arthur Curry
Of the Justice League cast, Mamoa was up there as my most skeptical but ended up being one of my favorites.
As Arthur, Jason is relatable, has fun tough guy energy, and feels like a warrior but in a different way than the others. Having an Arthur who hasn't gone to Atlantis yet and is more of a grub and less kingly is weirdly fun and fresh.
In his film, he was an excellent strong leading man. While he felt a little more Wolverine than Aquaman at times, he was fun to watch and brought weight to big moments.
I hope in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Mamoa brings more of that kingly energy Aquaman classically has, but other than that, this is a good performance that will be hard to top.
I also liked that Arthur wasn't played by a named actor. I like trends like that and would like to give an actor not as well known a big shot.
Characteristics
I'd like to pitch a very different Aquaman.
I like an Aquaman who can comedically get his ass kicked.
Arthur should believe in any room he steps in he is the strongest one there, especially when he isn't. Particularly in the Injustice games, Arthur has a "how dare you speak that way to a king?!" energy that I love, and then repeatedly gets bested by Lanterns, Amazonians, Magicians, Kryptonians, and Speedsters. Aquaman is not special in the Justice League, but he should walk into a room and think he is. At least to begin.
I'd like an Aquaman who has been king and protector of the seas for awhile, and has become Smug and Brash because of it. He's still well intentioned but definitely needs to be humbled. This is early days hero Aquaman.
I'd also like him to be sometimes the butt of the joke, sometimes the straight man of the group, but always a real threat. He will likely lose a fight, but he will put up one. Kind of the Drax of the group.
Despite all his shortcomings, Aquaman should still be charming and likable. His confidence should come from the fact that he doesn't know how to lead, and is scared of letting the people of Atlantis down.
What Ethnicity is Aquaman?
This question has become a little more interesting in the past couple of years. While Aquaman is typically a white character, casting Mamoa, did pivot the character to being of Hawaiian descent. This is both logical and honors the character in a great way.
That thinking trickled to Namor, who was casted with Mexican descent in mind for an Aztec feeling.
I think both of these are fun interesting changes that add life to both characters while grounding them in reality.
While I think Aquaman can be white, adding him to cultures associated with beaches, islands and water can be beneficial.
Keeping that in mind, I am going to say any actor could play him.
Other Stipulations
Aquaman needs to be built like a wall. Mamoa brought a much needed physicality to the character that I loved. He should feel as big as Superman, even if he isn't as tough.
Aquaman should also feel comfortable in a royal setting. He needs to feel like a classic king.
I want someone who is younger than our Batman (46) but older than our Superman (30). 35-40 range works, old enough to be a king but young enough to be stupid.
He needs to be charming and kind of unlikeable in his actions, but in the end we root for him. Think Captain Kirk or Thor.
Finally, I don't want to look to actors known for Superhero roles.
Let's Begin.
3. Aaron Taylor-Johnson
I know what I just said, so I quickly want to get this out of the way.
If he wasn't literally every superhero ever Aaron Taylor-Johnson would've been my ideal Aquaman. He's everything needed.
Built like a wall. Charming. Strong. Could absolutely be an asshole. Smug enough to think he's the best in the room but could get his assbeat by multiple members of the League. Could absolutely lead a franchise and fit really well with my cast so far. But.
He is EVERY Superhero Universe already.
He's Kick-Ass, Quicksilver, and Kraven. While he's good in the first two and I'm sure he'll be fine in Kraven, he was wasted in both the MCU and the Sony Spider-Man universe. Aquaman would have been the ideal role for him, and he's been wasted.
If he was Aquaman though, and DC wanted to utilize him properly, he'd be perfect. But for now we'll have to settle for a Kraven who will never fight Spider-Man.
2. Jonathan Bailey
Known for his roles in Bridgerton, Crashing and Jack Ryan, Jonathan Bailey does one thing really well, and that's an asshole.
As the eldest Bridgerton brother he simultaneously played empathetic and a mean spirited antagonist well, striking a balance I like for Aquaman.
He also gets his ass kicked quite a bit, and has to learn from others to be a better man and forgive himself to overcome trauma.
While I think Bailey can do it, especially a meaner version, he leans to mean for me to want him in the group. He reminds me more of Sean Bean in Fellowship of the Ring, where he'd be an antagonist who never really gels with the rest of the group.
I think he'd be a fun juxtaposition from the other characters, but doesn't exactly have the energy I would want from an Aquaman.
1. Jack Reynor
Known for roles in Sing Street, Midsommar, Transformers the Last Knight and Macbeth, Jack Reynor has likely played the asshole in something you have seen.
While he is younger than I would like at 31, Reynor has the right energy I am looking for in an Aquaman.
In Sing Street in particular, he plays an older brother who has become the lazy has been and mentor to his younger brother starting a band. While he comes off as pretentious quite a bit, he genuinely loves his brother and wants what is best for him.
This balance of sad, headstrong, but meaning well is exactly what I want for my Aquaman.
(Also watch Sing Street, it's one of my favorite movies.)
Reynor is 6 feet tall and in my opinion, looks like classic Aquaman. He's big, he's strong, can play a dope or play a king, so why not both?
Reynor is also from Ireland, and while he can do an American accent, I'd like him to keep accent to add something new to Aquaman. Ireland is also surrounded by water, and perhaps in this version, Arthur Curry was born and raised by the water in Ireland.
Jack Reynor also has one thing that Mamoa has that is really hard to master.
Reynor is cool. While he can do outsider of the League and arrogant, we do want someone who will eventually fit right in and chill out with The Flash and Martian Manhunter. That's Reynor.
He's got the look, he's got the vibe. He's the perfect balance between Jason Mamoa and the classic royal Aquaman all while being something a little unexpected.
Jack Reynor would be the perfect Aquaman.

So many little things are just fundamentally wrong about it.
The iPad mount, Greg standing up during the introduction, the prizes being up in the balcony, the inconsistent number of tasks per episode.
There are also no rules. They barter and buy points and wins, despite cheats and rule breaks, because nothing has been codified. Roisin can’t complete the horse task, so she gets a separate task instead of a disqualification. Meanwhile, Tim makes up his own rules through the entire series and it doesn’t matter.
Vegans? What are those? Make Romesh smash up a bucket full of eggs for the hell of it and make fun of his indignation over it later. That’s something that apparently didn’t cause as much trouble then as I imagine it would now.
Alex’s suit fits him. That’s one I noticed the other day, because the one he wears now sure as hell doesn’t. It not only fits him, but he buttons it correctly, which means at some point between then and now he’s made it a conscious character decision to button it incorrectly. (I do know he buys cheap, unaltered suits specifically for the show these days, because he’s mentioned it in interviews.)
I think the only real consistent thing between series 1 and now is Greg’s habit of picking on the oldest panelist, and picking on his friends. Frank and Roisin were instant targets for this in series 1, and that level of lighthearted roasting has stayed fairly consistent through the years.
There’s an unaired pilot out there somewhere, but series 1 feels like a pilot series of its own in a lot of ways. So much changed even between series 1 and series 2. There’s more polish, more consistency. They figured the rules out, and codified a lot of things that needed codifying.
They even got a permanent trophy, which is itself crap in its own unique way. And I’ve said this before as well, but I don’t care that it doesn’t look like anybody. I hope they never change it. The cheap, tatty nature of it is 100% of its charm.
taskmaster season 1 has such a weird energy because they haven't fully figured out the vibe yet, so everyone is just slightly off. the greg and alex dynamic isn't quite exaggerated enough, theyre not committed to the bit enough for it to really work. it's such an uncanny valley version of the show.

the unaired pilot that's on the new charmed box set with special features is the one they handed into warner bros!! it was before alyssa was cast, and clearly before ted king and dorian gregory were cast!! i am shook!! it's wild how much difference a different cast can make, don't get me wrong, the people they got to fill those roles were great, i'm not trying to shit on them at all, but the chemistry was soooo different. maybe it's just because i'm used to what/who the cast ended up being but WOW. i never thought i'd get to see that pilot. i am so happy.

So I bought a copy of the script from the pilot episode of Charmed because I’m that obsessed I guess
Mainly I just want to know as much as I can about what the original intentions for the show and the characters were - with a show that changed as much and ignored continuity as much as Charmed did, I like the idea of finding that foundation and getting a new perspective on what grew out of it.
This is a revised script from after Alyssa joined the cast, so it’s not the original-original script, but when you consider how many drafts something like this probably had to go through, that’s kind of splitting hairs anyway.
The script includes descriptions of all of the cast members, which are amusing:
The book mentioned here isn’t actually seen in the pilot, but I can’t decide if mentioning it here is hilarious because “do we really have to gender home repair books”, or somewhat interesting because in a sense, you could subtitle the Book of Shadows the same way.
I feel like Piper went the furthest away from her original description here. To be honest, that reads more like Paige to me. And the fact that they were obviously setting up a parallel between her never being on time and then getting the power to stop time, but didn’t actually ever refer to Piper as ever having this problem, is disappointing.
Sidenote though, “earthy” is an amusing description giving that she becomes the Goddess of Earth later on...
(Additional sidenote: the script here locates the Manor in Sutro Heights, which I find interesting, because I’ve posted before about how Sutro Heights isn’t a real neighborhood)
Not much to say here, both pretty accurate and pretty well-explored by the show.
I find it interesting that Darryl was thought of as being a “family man” from day one, yet we don’t even find out that he has kids until halfway through season 2 and don’t see his wife until season 6. Also lol at the tiny description Andy gets.
Liberal??? Why do you have to identify the political ideologies of a demon who dies before the episode ends? lmao
Also I love how the show I guess tried to make Roger, the hugest fucking dork in the universe, seem like some kind of sex god???
And lastly....
His name is SHERIDAN??????
The script doesn’t have any deleted scenes and doesn’t reveal a ton of new details, but there are a few amusing notes here and there...
Like how apparently Piper was supposed to be wearing a chef’s outfit in her first scene, even though neither the unaired nor the aired version of the pilot had this
And how there were a lot more “don’t mention Roger” nonsequiturs for some reason
The basement is also noted as “never to be seen” which I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be just a note about sets for this episode, or if they were already starting to set up the mythology there
And how they somehow thought we would ever be suspicious that Andy was a bad guy lmao
And Phoebe’s premonition effect was supposed to be “MTV style”?? I honestly have no idea what that means
Or how apparently the woman from the opening scene was a nurse despite it never being mentioned (though it was in the unaired pilot)
The way this is worded makes less of a connection between the door closing and Prue’s powers... which could just be unclear writing, but it makes me wonder if the same “force” (aka Grams) that opened the attic door was originally intended to close the front door, too.
There’s also a few extra pieces of dialogue that we’re all incredibly lucky that someone had the sense to remove:
Learning that she has telekinesis apparently makes Prue shit her pants I guess????
and then we get this hokey setup...
I can just hear a comical “womp womp” trumpet over this.
And then...
...just. why. WHY.
But mostly though, the best part about this script is the little side notes that no one outside of the cast and crew would have ever gotten to see:
So all in all, an interesting read. I’m definitely curious now about what treasures other episodes’ scripts might hold, but I’m not committed enough to invest in any more of them. If anyone has any and has any interesting tidbits to share though, I’d love to hear them!

Saul of the Mole Men #4: “Fun King Johnny” | March 5, 2007 - 12:00AM | S01E04
Can I tell you something? I literally had no idea that Johnny Tambourine and Saul were both portrayed by Josh Gardner until I found myself, for the first time ever, curious about the actor portraying Johnny Tambourine. Like, it never even crossed my mind that it could be the same guy. Not sure if this means Josh Gardner is a gifted performer or if I’m just really unobservant.
Okay so the plot of this one is basically: Clancy is having trouble reaching King Johnny Tambourine, who is a born goofball. It seems that Bertram has charmed him thoroughly, and wants Johnny to sign a contract for Project Thunderhole, a hole so huge that they’ll never have to dig another hole ever again. He plans to dig this hole UPWARDS, which is currently forbidden by Mole Man law.
Meanwhile Saul is rotting in jail, having a terrible time. There’s a bit where his cellmate freaks him out by popping his own eyes out, screaming while blood sprays out the sockets, only to have them regenerate within seconds. Saul is eventually sprung for his trial, which is just him dressed like Sean Connery in Zardoz facing off with a big scary razor-toothed worm wearing a powdered judge wig. If he gets eaten, he’s guilty. If he doesn’t, he’s innocent. Just as the worm grabs hold of Saul, we learn that Bertram needs a licensed and bonded geologist to sign off on Project Thunderhole, which Johnny points out that Saul, in fact, is one. End episode.
The big comedy ideas here come off as random humor and it’s not very satisfying. The eye regeneration bit does nothing for me. It only annoys me, it’s audaciously clownish and violent, and I find myself wondering if the show thinks I’m dumb enough to laugh at it just because it’s weird and out of left field. I’m not sure why this joke offends my sensibilities, and I’m not sure why I don’t call what Tim & Eric do “random humor”, but this just doesn’t sit right to me.
I remember I worked on a local independent comedy pilot, and there was a character in the show whose whole thing was that they’d check in on him on a security camera in an adults-only part of a store, and he’d be doing something different each time. I remember the go-to example the producer always gave was “he’d be in there eating a dead body or something”. It’s that kind of joke: It’s funny because it’s over-the-top and violent, never mind that it’s completely unmotivated. I associated this show (and Young Person’s Guide) with drawing from that well way too often. I hated it!
There is another bit where Myelocytes perform for King Johnny. In case you aren’t aware of what myelocytes are, here’s an excerpt from wikipedia:
Numerous cytoplasmic granules are present in the more mature forms of myelocytes. Neutrophilic and eosinophilic granules are peroxidase-positive, while basophilic granules are not.
Man, I fucking hate science.

thank you
I never did see that, but I heard about it when it happened! Since we’re covering stuff here in chronological order, it’ll be a little while to get around to covering that one, but I WILL cover it! :)
KON writes:
Saul always struck me as a compromised vision and the unaired pilot sorta proves it. There is a better-realized, more interesting vision there than what ended up on the show. It feels like Adult Swim saw the pilot and said "we like it! But can you make it for [insanely low budget]? And can you crank out 20 immediately?" They said yes, but the answer was no.
CONTINUED:
It's me with more Saul talk... I pinpointed the difference between the Saul pilot and series for me... the pilot feels more like a twisted, adult version of a children's show, while the series just feels like a poorly-done adult show.
Something to think about. I did watch the pilot and I do think it looked better in general, but I think I still prefer the first aired version of episode one.
I genuinely wonder if the reason they let Tim & Eric crank out 30 episodes in such a short period of time was because they realized how much more they could do with similar production values and realized they backed the wrong garbage-making horse?
Who would you like to see replace Trevor Noah at the Daily Show. Don't worry about the direction of the show since he took over, pick your dream choice no matter unlikely.

‘FOLLIES’ TRIVIA
Sidney Guilaroff, Lucille Ball’s hair dresser, who takes responsibility for her famous ‘golden red’ for this movie, becoming her trademark color.
Although they appear in different segments, this is the only feature film collaboration between “I Love Lucy co-stars" Lucille Ball and William Frawley. Coincidently, Frawley's character in this film shares a striking similarity with his iconic character of Fred Mertz on “I Love Lucy.” In this film he plays a money-hungry curmudgeon of a landlord, much like the show. In the above photo, he appears with director Minnelli and co-star Brice.
The horse ridden by Lucille Ball is the Lone Ranger's Silver!
Lucille Ball was actually fired by Ziegfeld from his road company production of Rio Rita in the 1930s.
In February 1956, Lucy and Desi appeared on “MGM Parade” to promote their MGM film Forever Darling. The show also included footage of Lena Horne singing from Ziegfeld Follies.
Lucy also played a showgirl in pink in “Lucy Gets Into Pictures” (ILL S4;E19) aired on February 21, 1955. The scene was inspired by Ziegfeld’s legendary stage shows featuring beautiful women wearing elaborate costumes navigating long staircases. To solidify the comparison, Ricky says he is going to a meeting with Mr. Minnelli. Vincente Minnelli was one of the directors of Ziegfeld Follies.
Lucy Ricardo had previously cavorted around in a lampshade in the manner of a Ziegfeld girl in both the unaired pilot and “The Audition” (S1;E6).
Ziegfeld Follies includes a sketch for Red Skelton called “When Television Comes” aka “Guzzler’s Gin” in which a (future) television spokesman gets increasingly sloshed on his product. This sketch was an obvious influence on Lucy’s Vitameatavegamin routine in “Lucy Does a TV Commercial” (ILL S1;E30) aired on May 5, 1952.
Ziegfeld Girl Eve Whitney appeared on “I Love Lucy” episode “The Charm School” (ILL S3;E15). She used her own name for the character.
The Telegraph Boy in "A Sweepstakes Ticket" Arthur Walsh - appeared on “I Love Lucy” in “Lucy Has Her Eyes Examined” (ILL S3;E11) as Arthur ‘King Cat’ Walsh. He teaches Lucy how to jitterbug.
The first Judge in the “Pay the Two Dollars” James Crehan also played the Police Detective on “I Love Lucy in “The Great Train Robbery” (ILL S5;E5) first aired on October 31, 1955.
Porky, a voice on the telephone in “Number Please” Peter Lawford, played “Password” against Lucille Ball on September 24, 1964. At the time, Lawford was married to President Kennedy’s sister, Patricia. On November 26, 1968, Ball was a guest on “The Tonight Show” when Peter Lawford was sitting in for Johnny Carson.
Chorus Boy Bert May appeared as a solo dancer on “The Lucy Show” in “Lucy and Tennessee Ernie Ford” (TLS S5;E21) in February 1967.
In the dressing room, Lucy jokes with Fanny Brice, one of the funniest women in showbusiness. This was the only time Ball and Brice collaborated and was Brice’s last film.
Ziegfeld’s follies began on Broadway, so it was appropriate that the show featured past and future Broadway musical stars:
Lucille Ball ~ Wildcat (1960)
Carol Haney ~ The Pajama Game (1954)
Tommy Rall ~ Call Me Madame (1950)
Fanny Brice ~ The Ziegfeld Follies
Marion Bell ~ Brigadoon (1947)
Victor Moore ~ Anything Goes (1934)
There was a lot of material that was not filmed, but written and cast. Some of the original skits would have added “Lucy” performers Mickey Rooney, Ann Sothern, and Van Johnson to the cast.
