2023 Oscars Thoughts
This Oscars was (in my opinion) the best in a while.
The jokes weren’t that bad! You can never expect everything to land at award shows, but oftentimes the entire show is downright painful (shoutout to Amy Schumer). Overall, Jimmy Kimmel did a good job!!
The lovely birthday tribute to James Martin of An Irish Goodbye was one of my absolute favorite moments, how sweet was that.
I can’t remember if they’ve done this in past years, but regardless, the individual shoutouts to each Best Picture nomination was really nice to see.
This goes without saying, but all of the nominees and winners this year were absolutely wonderful and totally deserving. It made me really happy to see all of them recognized (despite a few snubs).
The reduced play off music! I was really happy to see they dialed it back compared to some of the other shows. Don’t get me wrong it’s always a little awkward and disappointing to see, but when award shows are playing off their biggest winners it’s downright embarrassing. At least the Oscars aren’t doing that too.
JENNYY!!! Her death absolutely DEVASTATED me so seeing her on stage was very healing<3
The performances were great! Naatu Naatu from RRR was really fun, Hold My Hand from Top Gun: Maverick was heartfelt, This Is A Life from Everything Everywhere All At Once had great visuals, and Lift Me Up from Black Panther was beautiful.
The speeches were heartfelt! They often are, but these really struck a chord.
The fashion was gorgeous too! Some favorites were Cara Delevingne, Jessica Chastain, and Lady Gaga.
All of my predictions were correct except one (director)! And they were who I was rooting for anyways so that was awesome.
Finally, this has been said many times before, but it’s been beyond delightful to see underappreciated older actors who’ve been in the industry for a long time finally having their well deserved moments. I don’t think I’ve ever been quite so happy to see anyone win an award before. I’m over the moon for Ke Huy Quan, Jamie Lee Curtis, Brendan Fraser, and Michelle Yeoh.
Edit: Just wanted to add this because I think it’s kinda funny but I was fully prepared to watch this muted and just turn the volume on for the speeches and people I like. I had the remote on hand and everything.

My oscars predictions this year is Everything Everywhere All at Once sweep. At least for best picture/best actress/best supporting actress (Stephanie Hsu imo, but maybe Jamie Lee Curtis?)/best director/best screenplay/best editing.
If Cate Blanchett wins Best actress I'll just go kill myself. No offense to her but I was not impressed by Tár and if it wins any awards I'm done.
The only performance I've actually seen for the lead actor is Colin Farrell in The Banshees of Inisherin, so I can't say much but I think they'll probably give it to Brendan Fraser. The Whale wasn't good enough to get nominated itself but I bet the idea of a Comeback King is enough to give it to someone else.
Guillermo de Toro's Pinocchio for best animated feature.

My Final Oscar Predictions: Will Win, Could Win, Wild Card Win
With the Oscars only four days away, I figured it was time to finally lock in my predictions. Here I'm doing my will win (my final prediction) my could win (my second pick) and my wild card win (my third pick). Thanks to the chaos of this year, the could wins and wild card wins are possible in a lot of cases. Here goes!
Best Picture
Will Win: Anora
I think all three of the movies that I'm listing in this category have an equal shot at winning the night's ultimate prize. My pick here is purely me going with my gut.
Could Win: The Brutalist
See above. My gut is just telling me Anora a little harder.
Wild Card Win: Conclave
With the BAFTA and the SAG ensemble win behind it, as well as just being a solid, sturdy pick, it'll be Conclave if not Anora or The Brutalist.
Best Actor
Will Win: Adrien Brody, The Brutalist
With the exception of SAG, he's won all the major precursors and is probably the most consistently awards-loved part of The Brutalist.
Could Win: Timothée Chalamet, A Complete Unknown
Has been the only other Best Actor nominee to really catch up with Brody (notably winning SAG). He's definitely been campaigning hard, I just don't think it's happening this year.
Wild Card Win: Sebastian Stan, The Apprentice
I feel like the more obvious pick here would be Ralph Fiennes for Conclave, but it just doesn't seem like he's getting much love individually for that film. So I went with Stan, who I was surprised to see on a secret ballot and who I think might get some political love in voting, even if it doesn't translate to a win.
Best Actress
Will Win: Demi Moore, The Substance
Has won most of the major precursors, has a great narrative, it just seems like things are aligned in her favor.
Could Win: Mikey Madison, Anora
This is yet another category where the "will win" is not guaranteed. Madison's story is interesting: she was the frontrunner until the Globes, seemed to slip away, and then came back with the Independent Spirit Awards. I'm leaning a little more towards Moore, but I still think she can pull off a win.
Wild Card Win: Fernanda Torres, I'm Still Here
There is a third option, which is that Moore and Madison split the vote and Torres winds up taking the win. She had a shock win with the Globes, and it's still possible for her.
Best Supporting Actor
Will Win: Kieran Culkin, A Real Pain
This is the pick I'm the most confident in. He's won every single precursor and has been the favorite the entire season. It's going to be him.
Could Win: Jeremy Strong, The Apprentice
If you'd asked me a week ago I'd probably have put Strong at the bottom for most likely to win Best Supporting Actor. However, he did show up on multiple secret ballots - while I know that that's a very small sample size, it's still much more than I was expecting.
Wild Card Win: Guy Pearce, The Brutalist
If for some reason it's not Kieran Culkin, and if the secret ballots misled me, it'll probably be Guy Pearce.
Best Supporting Actress
Will Win: Zoe Saldaña, Emilia Pérez
While Emilia Pérez has been embroiled in controversy after controversy and has destroyed its chances in most categories, Saldaña, the favorite before the major controversy, seems to have escaped relatively unscathed. Of course we won't find out if that's really true until Sunday night, but there haven't been any major warning signs against her win.
Could Win: Felicity Jones, The Brutalist
Once again I am being guided by the secret ballots and hope that I am not being led astray. If anyone is going to prevent Saldaña's win, I think it's Jones.
Wild Card Win: Monica Barbaro, A Complete Unknown
Potentially random guess, but between Isabella Rossellini having about eight lines in Conclave and my gut telling me that Ariana Grande's campaign is dead in the water, I think Barbaro is my third place pick.
Best Director
Will Win: Sean Baker, Anora
This is based purely off of my prediction for Anora to win Best Picture.
Could Win: Brady Corbet, The Brutalist
See above.
Wild Card Win: Coralie Fargeat, The Substance
I do think it's really just down to Baker and Corbet, but since I have to make a third place pick I think Fargeat is the most likely of the remaining directors.
Best Adapted Screenplay
Will Win: Peter Straughan, Conclave
Has won before, is the only film in this category I think can win Best Picture, it's happening.
Could Win: Joslyn Barnes and RaMell Ross, Nickel Boys
Has gotten a surprising amount of screenplay love previously.
Wild Card Win: Clint Bentley and Greg Kwedar, Sing Sing
If it's winning anything it's winning screenplay. Seems possible.
Best Original Screenplay
Will Win: Jesse Eisenberg, A Real Pain
Screenplay (both adapted and original) is an interesting category because it's one the Academy enjoys using to reward films that don't win Best Picture - maybe it's just because of the fact that there will always inherently be one winner that doesn't win Picture. I think A Real Pain could be another example of this, regardless of which movie wins the big title.
Could Win: Sean Baker, Anora
This is another category I'm unsure of. Again, I have Anora winning Best Picture, but like I said above, the Academy loves to give this award to movies that don't win big. I'm a little more confident on A Real Pain, but this is very much possible.
Wild Card Win: Brady Corbet and Mona Fastvold, The Brutalist
See everything I said above about Anora. Very possible, but I'm less convinced of it than the other two, since I feel that it's gotten much less love for its screenplay compared to them.

Note, this is who I think will win based on precursor awards, vibes, and in a few cases throwing a dart. This is not who I want to win in most cases. I also don’t feel nearly as confident about these predictions as I have the last few years. I only missed four last year, I’m expecting to miss more this year.

A few very early Oscar predictions while I procrastinate doing my laundry:
I think Challengers will get best picture, best original screenplay, and best actress noms, I can't say what might win
Civil Wars will 100% get a lot of noms. I think it has pretty good odds at best picture and best actress and probably best original screenplay
Anora will definitely get a lot of noms since it's one of the most oscar-baity I've seen come out this year
I think Megalopolis will get a bunch of undeserved nominations but not win anything
The Substance will probably get best picture, best screenplay, best actress, and best supporting. I think it has a very good chance of winning at least one.
It Ends With Us will probably (sadly) get a best adapted screenplay
Wicked will probably get a deserved best adapted screenplay. Probably also hair/makeup and costuming. I think Cynthia Erivo could easily get a best actress nom but I wouldn't put money on her winning. Also probably a few sound related technical awards
Animated feature noms will likely include Memoir of a Snail, The Wild Robot, and Inside Out 2 since Disney has dirt on the entire voting panel and it's not animation experts picking. Hard to say which would win, though. I hope and pray that The Watchmen might be able to get a nomination but I doubt they're even gonna campaign.
I think I Saw the TV Glow will get at least one nomination, maybe best Director or original screenplay
The Apprentice will probably get a few noms, almost certainly Best Actor for Sebastian Stan
Some more misc ideas:
I think A Quiet Place Day One has some potential
Deadpool and Wolverine will probably get something because, again, Disney won't let a single Oscars pass without committing a little fraud
Razzies prediction: MEGALOPOLIS SWEEP LET'S GOOOOO

2024 OSCAR PREDICTIONS
Here I go again with my annual Oscars predictions that may or may not be accurate. Unfortunately, I haven't seen every nominee — my personal best was still last year with 50 out of 52 movies — but I think I still have seen enough to make, uh, proper predictions.
With that said, here's my predictions for the 2024 Academy Awards:
Best Picture: Oppenheimer
Best Director: Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer
Best Actor: 🩷Cillian Murphy🩷, Oppenheimer
Best Actress: 🩷Lily Gladstone🩷, Killers of the Flower Moon
Best Supporting Actor: Robert Downey Jr., Oppenheimer
Best Supporting Actress: Da'Vine Joy Randolph, The Holdovers
Best Original Screenplay: Past Lives (PLEASE LET CELINE SONG WIN THIS CATEGORY)
Best Adapted Screenplay: American Fiction (very underrated but I like this film so much!)
Best Animated Feature: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (still haven't seen The Boy and The Heron, unfortunately, but Spider-Man is still very fun and well-liked)
Best International Feature Film: The Zone of Interest
Best Documentary Feature Film: 20 Days in Mariupol
Best Documentary Short Film: The Last Repair Shop (my favorite out of the bunch)
Best Live Action Short Film: The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (Academy Award Winner Wes Anderson WHEN?!?!)
Best Animated Short Film: War is Over! Inspired by the Music of John & Yoko (mmm, it's not good but Oscar people love this kind of stuff; my personal favorite is Our Uniform)
Best Original Score: Oppenheimer (duh)
Best Original Song: What Was I Made For?, Barbie (duh part 2)
Best Sound: The Zone of Interest (or maybe Oppenheimer, but I will put my fave in this one idc)
Best Production Design: Poor Things (I'm sorry, Barbie 😭)
Best Cinematography: Oppenheimer
Best Makeup and Hairstyling: Maestro (sigh... but people like huge onscreen transformations so 🤷🏽‍♀️)
Best Costume Design: Poor Things (or Barbie, but Poor Things just stand out more)
Best Film Editing: Oppenheimer
Best Visual Effects: The Creator (the one category I'm not really sure about lmao I sadly haven't seen Godzilla yet!)
