thinking about movies the gang would be into:

quinn is the easiest. i think the early 2000s romcom wave would absolutely floor her. she might even grow closer to daria as she realizes that a lot of them are modern adaptations of classic literature. she’d start reading classic romances and realize she actually enjoys them? definitely seeing her as a fan of clueless, mean girls, ten things i hate about you. also less mainstream, but party girl is so quinn coded. you’d probably have to force her to watch it, but she’d come out the other end as a huge fan.

daria would definitely appreciate a good social commentary, with emphasis on the absurd ones. cronenberg and lynch feel like safe spaces for her to venture, but i can also see her liking pre-codes and ingmar bergman. my gut says videodrome, persona, and the passion of joan of arc.

jane is into the art of the grotesque, but not without some greater narrative purpose. this extends to both beautifully deranged queer films (waters, almodóvar), and violent horror with a heart (creating a minor overlap with daria’s cronenberg roots). pink flamingos, dark habits, the fly.

trent wouldn’t be a big movie guy, but i can see him being into brendan fraser’s comedy era, with emphasis on airheads and monkeybone. maybe also encino man.

jodie not only cares a lot about her identity as a black woman, but like daria, she’d love a good social commentary. i can see her having a deep connection with set it off, though her favorite director would ultimately be spike lee. do the right thing is 100% in her top four. her and daria’s idea of a good social commentary can differ, but they get along a lot in their overlap. she does, however, occasionally fall for the charm of a bad rom/com/dram, she’d just never admit it out loud. she’s shown mack plenty he could blackmail her with though, if he ever wanted to.

he won’t though. mack doesn’t mind, as he ends up liking them too, but he’d love a comedic or underdog sports story. i unfortunately don’t know enough of those to give specifics on that, though. maybe white men can’t jump?

kevin and brittany watch kids movies but this isn’t a bad thing. it’s (implied) canon that kevin likes (the daria equivalent of) the muppets, so those are his go-to films. he loves the celebrity cameos, but doesn’t know their names, so he goes, “that’s that guy from that thing, or whatever!” i think brittany would like the animated barbie movies (and actually secretly understand the deeper themes in the later canon)!
