A headcanon for Alec Hardy:

His parents divorced when he was a teen. He was constantly changing houses, and none of the parents wanted to see him since he reminded them of their failed marriage.

Later, both of his parents remarried happily and started different families. And suddenly, Alec wasn't welcome in any of them – he wasn't a part of this family; he was left in the family that didn't exist anymore. He was left without a home.

Alec thought that he could find home in Tess. We know what happened afterwards. That's why he says he has no home. No one is waiting for him – no one in the whole world.
