Castle Ficlet: The first I love you
During the night between Always and After the Storm
Kate shuffled under the comfy white blanket, turning to her side, her eyes fluttering open. Castles eyes looked back at her. A soft smile spread across her face.
“Hi” she whispered.
“Hi” he whispered back. A smile touching his lips as his body visibly relaxed back into the pillows and sheets.
“Have you been watching me sleep?” she asked, biting her bottom lip a little in embarrassment.
“I um... yeah.” He mumbled. He squeezed her hand, and she realized he had been holding it this whole time, gently. His thumb circling the top of her hand, gently playing with her fingers. His eyes glanced down, almost embarrassingly and she squeezed his fingers.
“What?” she asked, ducking her head a little to meat his gaze.
He let out a little breath disguised as a laugh. “I feel like if I take my eyes off you, I’ll look back and you won’t be there.” He brought her fingers to his lips and kissed them.
Concern crossed her eyes, she let go of his hand, shuffled the blankets, and scooted closer to him. Kissing his chest, she looked up at him, his piercing eyes so bright in the darkness.
“I’m not going anywhere.” She said, firmly, so he would believe it. “I love you, Castle.” She could feel his heart pounding in his chest. Grabbing her shoulders, he slid back to make some space between them.
“You love me?” he asked, his voice cracking. Surprise in his eyes, Kate reached up to his face, brushing his hair back, smiling at him with that mysterious look she always had. Castle realized in this moment that look, that glow in her eyes, it was love.
“After all this time, you think I didn’t?” She asked. She leaned her body into his, kissing him on the lips, her hands on his face. She took the moment of silence after the kiss to nuzzle herself into his arms. The feeling of safety she never knew she needed, his warm arms engulfing her, his chin resting on the top of her head.
“I guess…” he sighed, at a loss for words, which was still an unfamiliar feeling even though it happened quite a lot with her. “I guess I had just convinced myself over the last month that you didn’t. I was trying to come to peace with that. And that was okay.” He paused as she squeezed him a little bit tighter.
“Rick, I’m so sorry.” She whispered into his chest. She could feel him shaking his head, he pulled them apart for just a moment to look in her eyes.
“I love you Kate, none of that matters anymore.” He kissed her, long and slow. “You’ve healed all those wounds in an instance with those words.” He smiled, and she smiled bigger now, swatting his shoulder.
“So cheesy.” She laughed, and he laughed too, pulling her close, tucking the blankets up around them both.
“Cheesy, but true.” He said. And they both lay there, feeling each others breathing, the calm, comfortable, familiar presence of each other lulling them back to sleep.
Neither of them stirred until Kate woke to the light peeking through the window, quietly detangling herself from his arms so she could slip away and make them coffee.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now that we know those words crossed Kates lips many times before Still, I like to think it happened this night. That she said it, that she felt it, that she meant it. Maybe its too early, too quick for our damaged girl. But she definitely knew. She went to his door with all of the love in her heart. And him confirming that it wasn't a dream wasn't so much about the whole night, but about that moment, in the middle of the night when she said those words. So I felt the need to write this quick little moment.

Castle fan fiction recommendation:
If you haven't read the stories by bnr848, you've missed out on an AU Universe of excellent future fics. I'm in the process of reading her stories about the future of the Castle children: Red is about Alexis, and then each of the Caskett kids get a story: Jake, Reece and Lily. The stories are wonderful and the last sentence in Jake's story always makes me tear up with happiness.
I also recommend bnr848's story titled Life. It is a post-Crossfire story that is brilliant.
Here's a link to bnr848's author page:

The Castles and Corona
Word Count: 2509
TW: Mentions Covid-19
Author’s Note: This is a gift for Fatima for RyanFriends Day. Am I literally the last one to post? I’m pretty sure yes. But like I always say, better late than pregnant (no offense to those people that want children, I just personally do not at this current time). I hope you enjoy this. I originally started writing this piece to post on Rick’s birthday but school got to be too much but I still wanted to post it. As I started working on it this weekend, it exploded into way more than the 1100 word piece I was expecting. Enjoy!
Tumblr media
“Aren’t you used to being at home all the time babe?” Kate looks at her husband who is itching to leave the loft.
“Being home by choice is different when you aren’t being forced to stay home. Plus trying to keep Lily and the twins occupied is difficult.” Rick pauses before gazing into his wife’s eyes. “You could stay home with us.”
“No can do. Essential personnel remember?”
“Don’t the murderers have to stay home though?”
“Unfortunately I feel more like a beat cop than a detective these days. But I’ll try and make it home in time so that we can have dinner together ok? Maybe I’ll grab us something on the way home?” Rick nods, but she can see the enthusiasm is lacking in her husband. He’s been at home with the kids for months now and it’s draining on him. Plus it’s his birthday and he can’t even go outside to celebrate it. She’ll need to come up with something fun to distract him.
Sure, there’s a lot of things that they could do, but he’s itching to go in the real world, see people, research for his novels, among other things. But keeping him and the kids safe is the number one priority, especially since Alexis is pregnant with her first and he wants to be able to see her. Kate hasn’t been able to see her for weeks other than over FaceTime since she’s been out among people who haven’t been quarantining.
It’s not like the year that she planned a surprise party for him because of the accident while they were skiing. It’s just not safe enough for them to invite friends and actors over just so Rick has a mystery to solve. Lily helped pick out a gift for Rick on Amazon; Jake and Reese are barely two. They made a card the other day for the gift she purchased for him.
It is one of the cutest things she’s seen— although she thinks all their art is. An assortment of scribbles on a sheet of paper that she wrote “We Love Our Daddy” on top of and then folded in half and wrote “Happy Birthday” on the front before letting them color some more, but it’s still beautiful. Lily told her she didn’t want help making her card; her determined little four year old. Sure her letters might be flipped in a couple places but “Happy B-day. I love you Daddy, Love Lily” has never looked so good. And the picture of their family made Kate tear up from how perfect it was.
“Momma! Stay and play with us!” Lily begs just like every day. Six days on, one day off because of the pandemic hasn’t been easy, especially on her kids, but she has two days left before a full day off.
“I’ve got to go in to work today baby.” She picks up her first born and holds her close, feeling the warmth of her baby as she cuddles close.
“But you went in yesterday.” Lily’s voice drops to a whisper, as if Rick won’t hear her as she says, “I want to have a tea party with you, not Daddy.”
“But Daddy is so much better at tea parties.” Lily shakes her head stubbornly, brown bob shaking from side to side.
“Want you to play today Momma.” Kissing her daughter’s head, she thinks this all over. Part of her wants to just say yes and stay home, but she has a duty to the people of New York. She knew there would be things she would miss out on, but she never thought playing with her daughter while a pandemic was happening would be one of them.
“How about you play with Daddy today, since it’s his birthday, you have a special tea party. And when I have my day off, you and I can have a special Momma and Lilybug only tea party?”
“OK!” Lily’s enthusiasm shoots out of her mouth. “Can we have cookies at the tea party?”
Kate pretends to think about it. “I think Daddy would be willing to do that.” Like Rick would ever turn down a cookie, or making his kids happy.
“Daddy might be willing to do what?” Rick asks as he sips on coffee by the counter, as if he hadn’t heard the entire conversation.
“Daddy can we have cookies at our tea party?”
“Oreos or chocolate chip?” Rick asks, and the look on Lily’s face reminds Kate of times she’s posed philosophical questions to her husband, but the answer Lily gives also reminds her of her husband.
“Both.”
“Ah, a worthy answer.” He holds a hand out to her. “Want to help me prepare for the tea party?” He offers knowing that it will be the easiest while the twins are playing on the carpet in the living room and also it will give Kate an out to get to work. Her bag is sitting in the office, so she can grab that, say goodbye to the twins, kiss Lily goodbye, and give the birthday boy a kiss on the way out.
Slinging the bag over her shoulder, she walks out to see Jake and Reese playing with trucks and cars all over the living room floor. They’re playing as if a whole city is out here, ramps are made out of the couch and coffee table and of course each other, but they’re happy as can be. Instead of interrupting their play, Kate leans over and just kisses the tops of their heads, they don’t even notice her leaving, which is best. Jake is usually fine with her leaving, but Reese being a total Momma’s boy, will cry for hours if he notices her leaving for work so Rick and her try to distract him as best as possible.
“Are we feeling Chips Ahoy Chewy or Crispy?” Of course they had multiple cookies in their house. Every time Rick went to the store, there was always some sort of new cookie he ended up coming home with. Or ice cream. Or candy. But it’s one of the many things that Kate loves about him.
“Chewy.” Kate whispers loud enough for both of them to hear, knowing that they’re Lily’s favorite. And Lily nods in agreement.
“No lesser cookies allowed here.” Rick says in agreement.
“I’ve got to head out Lilybug. Can I have a kiss?” Kate says, kneeling next to her little girl.
“Always Momma.” Lily turns and places the biggest kiss she can.
When Kate rises from the floor there’s a certain other person waiting their turn, coffee mug in hand for her. “Do I get a kiss too?” He says, that smug smile on his face, already knowing the answer.
“Since it’s your birthday, I think you can have two.” She grabs the worn fabric of his “I Aim To Misbehave” shirt and pulls him towards her. He says it’s from the best sci-fi show, but she will argue him on that till the end of their days. The touch of their lips is magnetic and magical, as it always is. The pull she feels to him, she hopes it never dies. And knowing the two of them, it never will. As she pulls away from him, she can’t help but whisper, “wow.”
“I’ll second that.” He replies breathlessly. “If that’s what I get on my birthday, I want it to be my birthday every day.”
“Wait until you get your actual present.” Kate can’t help but wink at him before placing a quick kiss on his lips. “I love you, always. I’ll see you after work.”
“Love you too. Always.” He ruffles Lily’s hair. “Momma’s going to get the bad guys, and you and I are going to have the best tea party.”
“Mmmhmm.” Lily agrees putting more cookies on the plate. Kate looks at her family one last time before putting on her NYPD face mask and walking out the front door, locking it behind her.
________________________________________________________________
Opening the door, Kate isn’t surprised to hear mostly silence. It’s half past seven, which means the twins are asleep already, which is common these days, but Lily is probably up in her room with Rick. Most likely, they’re sitting on her bed, reading one of the many books he’s purchased for her. It’s not uncommon for him to read her three or four books while they wait for her to try and get home before Lily’s eight o’clock bedtime.
Setting the bag of food on the counter, she knows it can wait. Yes it’s for Rick’s birthday, but there’s only so much time that her little girl will be this little. And the last few days, she’s only made it home in time to give her a quick kiss, listen to one or two things that has happened in Lily’s day and then try and get her excited four year old to go to sleep. But first things first, she has to pop into Rick and her room and go through their safety precautions. Keeping their kids safe is the most important thing.
After a quick shower, changing into sweats and a shirt she might have stolen from Rick’s drawer, she makes her way up the stairs, throwing her wet curls into a bun as she walks up the stairs. As she walks towards her daughters room, she peeks into Jake and Reese’s room and sees two sleeping little boys. She smiles at their faces, dreaming away merrily. She closes the door, letting them sleep without stepping into the room, not wanting to risk waking them. Further down the hall, she can hear Rick’s voice faintly. The soft words of Goodnight Moon float down the hallway, and she’s not surprised. Once every couple of days he reads that book to Lily. Partially because she loves it, partially because he loves reading to her.
The door is already partially opened and she gazes in, not wanting to burst the bubble of father and daughter yet. The moment is too pure, too sweet and one that she hopes will continue for the rest of Lily’s life. But for right now she will take the moment of seeing her little dark haired child curled into her father’s arms listening intently to the words pouring from her father’s lips just how her mother absorbed his words after her own mother’s death. Kate pulls the phone sitting in her pocket and snaps a silent photo of the two of them. These moments she’s grateful to get to see. But there’s a note of melancholy in her soul, for she wishes she could share this moment, this picture, with her own mother. Grief doesn’t get lighter, but each day you grow stronger to carry it.
Kate pushes the thought from her mind as she pushes the door open so she can walk into the room. “Momma!” The story forgotten, her momma is home.
“Hi Lilybug.” Kate makes her way to sit next to her daughter but Lily clamours to the end of the bed before Kate can even sit down. Lily jumps into Kate’s arms like she does every night that Kate makes it home before bedtime.
“Momma, I missed you!”
“I missed you too, baby. I always do when I’m away from you.” She moves back to the end of the bed where Rick is sitting, book in his lap, a soft smile on his lips. “Hi.”
“Hi.” Kate nestles into his open arms, still holding Lily. He kisses her forehead, being the easiest point to reach. “Shall we continue Bean?” Rick uses the nickname that Kate and he have called Lily since she was nothing more than a splotch on an ultrasound.
“Yes Daddy!” Lily curls into her mom, holding her blanket close and listens to the words her father reads softly to them. They get through a couple more books before Lily tells Kate all about what fun she had with “Daddy, Jakey, and Reesie”. Sooner than Kate wants, it’s time to tuck Lily in, turn off her light and kiss her good night. The hours fly by too fast and her kids are growing up too fast. But she’s doing all of this for them, right?
As they close the door behind them, Rick takes her by the hand, very reminiscent of a rainy night years ago.  But this time, instead of walking away from secrets and mistakes, they’re walking past their sleeping children’s bedrooms to go have a birthday dinner and some time together that they both really need.
“What’s going on in that mind of yours?” Rick asks, lightly bumping hips with hers.
“What do you mean?”
“You’ve got your thinking face on.” He points in between her eyebrows. “You get these cute little wrinkles right here. Wanna let me in?”
“I feel like I miss out on so much of the time the kids are awake. Like they grow so fast and I’m here for like three hours in the morning and maybe half an hour of Lily’s before bedtime routine.”
“Yeah but we knew that your hours were long before we even tried to have Lily.”
“But I don’t think I want to miss more of their lives. I missed her first steps, Jake’s first word, and a bunch of other things. Do I want to miss their first days of school? First big games? I want them to know that their mom is there for them.”
“They do know you’re here for them.” Rick says, pulling them to a stop in the kitchen. “But if you want to look at changing your hours, or changing your career, I’ll support you. Always. I didn’t marry you because you’re a cop. I married you because I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life without you.”
Kate takes a deep inhale through her nose. “I know. I’m sorry. It’s your birthday. We don’t have to figure this out tonight.”
“I’ve had plenty of birthdays. This one has been fine just the way it is. I got to spend the day with my kids, who you should know, the twins wanted to show me the card they made so much they went looking for the present but left the present behind. They only cared about the card.” Rick smiles at the memory. “And now I get to spend the evening with my beautiful, kickass, and have I mentioned smoking hot wife.” He enunciated each word with a kiss. “That’s all I need for a birthday.”
“But we don’t need to stress over my career on your birthday. That can wait until another day. Tonight should be about you. So I picked up food from that Thai place we like. And you’ve got some presents to unwrap.”
“If my present is under that,” He points to her—his— t-shirt and sweats, “then I vote for presents first, eat later.”
“Birthday boy gets to choose.” Kate winks at him and then pulls him towards their bedroom. Who knows, maybe his birthday present will actually show up in nine months.

Any Caskett AU fan fictions where Castle is a criminal that Kate’s been chasing, for whatever reason, and every time they encounter one another it’s all UST and flirting. Until one day the temptation becomes too great.

Oh YAY thank you!
1) If we’re talking being actively part of a fandom because I knew it was a thing, Ronmione for sure.
2) For me, they’ve got to have a dynamic that makes me interested in what happens next for them. I’m a big fan of slow burns, particularly with childhood friends to lovers, or enemies to friends to lovers, but also find people who are able to have an instant connection compelling so long as that instant connection comes from something real, particularly if they’ve happened to stumble on someone who seems to understand them in a way no one else ever has. Now, obviously these connections aren’t always canon since I DO have a soft spot for a good crossover ship, but my imagination is capable of filling in these kinds of dynamics if these two characters could meet.
 23) Oh, Caskett. Do you KNOW how long I spent saying “No, they’re not gonna get boring if they get together, how COULD they when they practically SPARKLE with chemistry and understand each other so well by now” annnnnnnd then Season 5 onward made Boo Boo the Fool out of me. *sighs*
29) Oh I LOVE OCs. I mean I write original fiction, and will sometimes use fanfic or RP as a means of getting to know new characters in a low pressure way. You write me a well written OC for one of my favorite characters who I feel could use someone new, I will ADORE your fic.

Title: Misdeem WC: 950
“I don’t see it going anywhere.” —Richard Castle, Food to Die For (2 x 22)
There are times when he’d like to be a liar. This probably does not exactly set him apart from the masses. Who is out there walking around, drawing breath and sighing it back out again who hasn’t wished they’d been a liar at one time or another? Who hasn’t had a friend solicit reactions a truly hideous new outfit and desperately tried to sell a sincere It’s fantastic! only to have their own stupid, truth-telling face nuke the little white lie from orbit?  Doesn’t he—day in and day out—sit across the table from self-tattling morons who’d like nothing more than to lie their way right out of the interrogation room? He might be—he clearly is—in bad company, but he would very much like to be a liar right now.
Beckett didn’t seem to mind.
His mother thinks he’s lying. His daughter probably would think he was lying if she had any attention to spare. And it’s not even that he wants to be lying. It should be a lie. That’s the agony of it.
She should mind. That’s the way of things. This whole Richard Castle: Moral Support for Hire gambit should be one in a long line of his fool-proof plans to get her goat—to make her mind.
But she doesn’t mind. It’s not a problem. He’s telling the truth, and he’s not even getting credit for it. Not from his mother, who is pursing her lips and shaking her head as she sourly reminds him that he should be getting ready for his date.
He doesn’t want credit, though, not in this instance, and certainly not for this truth. He wants to be the rogue his mother thinks he is—the one his daughter would think he is, if she weren’t, herself, so torn between duty and desire. He wants to be the Hamptons, the seductive allure of fun in the sun that makes Beckett forget all about the microscope-requiring AP exam that is Tom Demming. But he’s not the Hamptons. Or Beckett is not tempted by the beach. Or something.
It’s a cavalcade of lousy metaphors, so he doffs his gloves and goggles. He extracts a spare watch from somewhere and he picks out a shirt in a color that she likes on him. Or a week ago he’d have said it was a color she liked on him, but apparently he’s no judge at all of what Kate Beckett likes or doesn’t like. That is the only explanation for the fact that she’ll be toting her microscope and slides all over town tonight, completely unperturbed by the thought that he will be out on the town, raconteuring his way through the celebrity chef world with one of her high school gang.
There’s a moment when she bursts on the five-star dinner scene that he thinks she’s come to make a liar out of him. He very nearly chokes on whatever it is he’s eating at the moment and weakly, hopefully demands to know: Beckett, what are you doing here?
He has the answer. He’d happily write it for her. He’d set her up with anything from cue cards to index cards to a state-of-the-art teleprompter, if she’d only read the lines with conviction: I’m here for you. I’m here because I couldn’t stand the thought of this. I’m here because it is a problem, and I do mind.
But that isn’t the answer, of course. She is not interested in cue cards, index cards, or his writing services in any medium. She is not there for him or because she minds or it’s a problem. She’s there for case-related purposes, because the only struggle for her is the one between duty and more duty.
He tries to work himself up to play the part everyone expects—the one she expects. He makes a respectable showing of it. He whines at length about the food of which she has cruelly deprived him and her good friend Madison. He accuses her of being uncivilized. He has another nanosecond’s worth of a thrill when she bans him from the interrogation. He parses the words giggling over the risotto with our suspect up, down, and sideways, searching for vindication—for the indisputable evidence that he’s been a liar after all, but it isn’t there.
She’s hissing, red-faced, and thoroughly embarrassed by Madison’s Castle baby fantasy, but it’s . . . generic embarrassment. Or worse, it’s embarrassment for his sake—that he’d play a role in such an outlandish fantasy, or maybe that he’ll get the wrong idea? She’s avoidant when he tries to get her goat with a reprise of the Castle baby fantasy, but it’s . . . impersonal. She wants to get on with the case and back to her date with duty. There isn’t a shred of evidence that she hopped in the Fun Police Wagon and  drove it down to Rocco DiSpirito’s place because she’s bothered by the fact that he was out with Madison.
He wonders how it’s come to this. He wonders when, because he could have sworn that she minded when he had his ten-second fling with Ellie Monroe, when he was on the radar of Bachelorette Number 3. He would have laid money on it being a problem when Rina scrawled her digits across his palm, when Lee Waxman wanted to trade favors, and when Meredith and the Crazy-Sex Train blew through town. He’s positive that she has minded virtually every woman who has so much as given him a second glance over the last year or so.
But Madison? She doesn’t mind. It’s not a problem, because she, herself, has ‘Something’.
That’s the truth and he’d so much  rather be a liar.
A/N: Oof. This was ornery; and I didn't think this was the lie that would drive the story. Blegh.

Revisiting Castle
I have decided to revisit Castle, 7 years after the finale and 10 years after the high of my obsession where I spent months creating content about the show.
I am feeling all the feels, and all of the nostalgia. Including rereading fan fiction I don’t even remember writing and feeling like I want to puke when thinking about Caskett.
Not much different than how it was back then 😂
I genuinely miss this feeling, and in the last ten years have really only felt it for the show Outlander, but man do I miss being younger and watching this show and watching that relationship progress.
Which brings me to acknowledging the completly lack of memory surrounding the final few seasons and that finale. Guys, I rewatched that last scene and wanted to scream.
The sad thing is I wasn’t really on tumblr anymore, or much on the internet expressing my feelings about that finale. And I need more.
I need to know what everyone thought, I need to know reactions, I need to not feel alone. I need fan fiction recommendations and understanding of why they did this. What was going on with the writers and the actors. I need closure.
So if you happen to read this and have references, links, fan fic recs, stories, feelings, anything. Help me relive that amazing feeling of fandom and obsessive love over this show and this couple.
Also taking recommendations on shows that could provide similar feelings. As I mentioned, I love outlander and it definitely fits the similar vibes the hopeless romantic in me needs.

Spending time with friends and family is wonderful. You get to relax and catch up, and really enjoy each other’s company. So question for you: what made you love Castle? Have you watched since the beginning, or did something/someone get you to watch? At what point did you know you absolutely loved this show? -Santa
Hi Santa,
Yes. I watched from the very start, watching the pilot episode when it first premiered on TV here in the USA. What initial interested me was the premise of a writer following around a female detective for inspiration, and helping her to solve cases. I was vaguely aware of Nathan Fillion because of Firefly, which I’d seen once or twice in syndication during college. By the end of “Flowers for Your Grave” (which is one of the best TV pilot episodes, in my opinion), I was a fan, already semi-shipping Caskett since “you have no idea.”
What drew me to the series was the premise, and the light, fun tone shown in advertisements but I definitely stayed because of Caskett (or by that point, the possibility of Caskett). By the end of the season, I was a solid fan of the show.
But I would say it wasn’t until season 2 that I absolutely knew I was a goner. By “Tick, Tick, Tick/Boom" Castle had become my favorite show, and Caskett my favorite fictional couple (even though they weren’t a couple at that point, though it was already clear to me that they were endgame, it was just a question of how long the writers would string us along before they go them together.)
Castle and Beckett are my favorite thing about the show, individually, but mostly together. They made just a compelling couple to watch, with even though the writers stumbled once and while with their characters and their relationship it was fun watching them fall in love.
The show’s been off the air since 2016, yet I’m still obsessed with it. That’s a testament to the strength of their characters, I think.
Until tomorrow.

CastleFicPromoter’s Castle Ficathon Winter 2022
Hello and welcome!
This post is to announce a fun way that the Castle fandom and its talented fan fiction writers can generate some awesome stories over the winter holiday season of 2022/2023, keeping our shared love for Caskett alive.
Participating stories should be posted on Fanfiction.net or Archive Of Our Own (but please, let me know if you are only posting on AO3, as I don’t have a way to get notifications if you do). Stories posted on FFnet will be included in the “favorites” list on the CastleFicPromoter FFnet account. Links will also be tweeted through our twitter account and blogged/reblogged on tumblr.
Rules: Since the holidays are a busy time, the word goal will be set to 30,000 words to achieve the Ficathon. To achieve the Mini-Ficathon you’ll need to break 15,000 words. To achieve the Maxi-Ficathon, aim for a word count of 50,000 words. For the really adventurous, Ultra-Ficathon word count is set at 75,000 words.
Word Count Goals:
Mini-Ficathon – 15,000 words Ficathon – 30,000 words Maxi-Ficathon – 50,000 words Ultra-Ficathon - 75,000 words
Submissions will be accepted starting Thursday, November 17, 2022 (Kate Beckett’s birthday) and ending at midnight (US Pacific) on Friday, March 3, 2023. You can start writing at any time, but only fanfics posted within the time frame will be accepted as part of the Winter Ficathon. Before then, plot and plan away.
Anyone can join, experienced and new fan fiction writers alike. The main point is to have fun!
Stories are to be posted on your own FFnet account/AO3 account, but should have “Castle Ficathon Winter 2022” somewhere in the summary, so that readers can know that the story is a participant. Also, if you post a link to the story on Twitter, make sure you tag @CFPromoter in your post, so I’m aware you’ve started posting and I’ll generate a promo tweet for it.
I’ll be using the hashtag “CastleFicathonWinter2022” on Twitter when I do promo tweets. Also on tumblr, please use the tag “CastleFicathonWinter2022” for ease of reblogging.  I’ll also be using the hashtag “CFW2022” on tumblr and twitter.
Need help coming up with story ideas? Feel free to check out the prompt list on our tumblr page, or the many prompts to be found on the Castle Fanfic Prompts tumblr.
Every participant will receive an individualized digital badge of participation at the end of the challenge. Participants will also receive an additional badge for the word count level achieved at the end of Ficathon. Those who reach or break 50k will also receive a personalized wallpaper based off the Castle Ficathon Winter 2022 key art.
Don’t stress if you have trouble with updating regularly, the main point is to have fun, so… no pressure.

Her Missing Partner
 Word Count: 1564
Warnings: None that I can think of
Author’s Note: This is a #Beckettines21 gift for  @caskettinlove. I tried to incorporate some of the things you love into it and this fits in to the timeline right before 4x22 (Originally it was going to split into the episode but my muse did not work that way. I did rewatch the episode just for you though:D) Enjoy!

Coffee had always been their special thing. Even when nothing in the day went right or their case was nothing but dead ends- they always had coffee. Usually Castle was the one bringing it to her, but sometimes she returned the favor. But something about this case- the case of her missing partner- adding with the lack of caffeine that was making it where she couldn’t figure out the missing piece. She couldn’t come to terms with the missing piece. Or maybe she just didn’t want to come to terms with it.
Castle is the missing piece. Even when they don’t have active cases, he’s usually here trying to throw out anything to drive her crazy. But he hasn’t been here in almost twenty four hours. Kate’s eyebrows pull together as she stares at the murder board, filled with the information from the case they closed yesterday. Castle should be here. He always has a place to fit here like a missing puzzle piece fits into a puzzle, but it almost feels like he doesn’t want his place any longer. There’s something that is pushing him farther away, and the only thing that would make sense can’t possibly be true. The only thing she could think is pushing him away would be if he found out that she remembers, that she lied. But how could he?
“No Castle?” Espo’s voice cuts into her thoughts. While she might be missing hers, his partner is by his side.
“Uh, I haven’t heard from him today. But where are you at with finishing up the write up?”
“Maybe don’t make him make the first step.” Ryan throws out, ignoring her question.
“What do you mean?”
“Phones work both directions.” Espo tacks on before the two head off towards their own projects.
She knows the boys are right. She should reach out to Castle. Finding out what’s going through his mind, why he’s running from her, how to fix everything. Maybe, coffee can help with this too.
Standing outside his door, cups in hand, she realizes the thing she didn’t think about. How is she going to knock on the door with two cups of coffee? Moving from foot to foot, she finally stacks the cups on top of each other so she has a hand to knock. On the other side, she can heard noises, so someone is definitely home, she’s just not sure who will answer the door.
“Ka-Beckett? What are you doing here?”
“Thought my partner could use a caffeine boost. I figured you had to be writing.” She holds the cup out to him and could almost laugh at their accidentally twinning. The navy of his button down matches hers. Her jeans could literally be cut from the same cloth as his, apart from how skinny hers are. “Great minds.” She mentions, motioning towards their clothing.
“Yeah, something like that. Did I forget I had to be somewhere? I usually only get home visits if I did.”
“No. I mean not technically. We haven’t seen you in…” Kate trails off, not wanting to admit her tracking of how long it’s been since she saw him. “I thought I should check in on you.”
“I’m fine. Just busy. I have a life outside the 12th remember?” The words are harsh and unforgiving as they leave his lips. His eyes have gone icy instead of the ocean warmth she normally feels.
“What did I do, Castle?” She wants to fix this. She wants to make everything better so that she can have him back, her partner, her… her Castle.
“Why does everything have to be about you, Kate?” He counters harshly.
“If it wasn’t about me, why are you so angry with me?” Kate can’t stop the hand that comes to rest on her hip. “If you need to yell, yell at me. But please don’t shut me out Castle.”
“Isn’t that how you prefer things to be done though? It wasn’t me that hid away for months. I leave you be for not even two days and suddenly you’re knocking down my door, making demands?”
“Because this isn’t you. You’re the dependable one. You’re the one I know that I can turn to when I need someone to bounce ideas off of or find a crazy theory that just might fit a case. You’re not the one who goes running. That’s me. I run, but I’m trying to get better. Trying to make it where we no longer don’t talk about the things that matter.”
“You’re actually wanting to talk about things now? Did you ever think it might be too late for that?”
“I’m hoping it’s not. Because someone taught me that hope is a powerful thing. And I have a lot of it now. So whatever I did, talk to me Castle, because I can’t figure it out.”
Finally, Castle can’t keep it in anymore. “It’s what you didn’t do.” The words slip out on one breath. “Why couldn’t you just tell me? You lied to me for months instead of just telling me and letting me off easily.”
“Let you off easily? Castle, what are you talking about?” He knows she lied. But how he figured it out and when, she has no idea.
“Just because I feel a certain way didn’t mean that you had to. That wasn’t why I told you. I told you how I felt because I couldn’t live without you knowing. Especially when…” He trails off before starting a new thought. “But no one said you had to feel the same way. I get it- I’m frustrating and childish and there are times when I don’t know where the line is drawn. But even with all of that, I don’t think I deserved being lied to. You could have just told me Kate. I could have dealt with you not feeling the same way. But lying to me, for months? What kind of a partner- no what kind of a person does that?”
Kate can only focus on one part of what he said. “You think I lied to you because I don’t feel the same way?”
Castle seems to ignore this question. “You shut me out. It’s so common at this point it didn’t even surprise me. When things are hard, you run from it. But, if you had just told me, I would have gotten out of your hair.” Castle tacks on, running a hand through his own.
“That’s the last thing I ever wanted Castle.”
“What do you want then? Because I’ve tried looking at this from every angle and there’s none that make any sense. If you don’t feel the same, why keep me around?”
“No one said I don’t feel the same Castle.” Kate pushes a lock of hair behind her ear. “Well, no one but you.” A rarity happens with that statement, the writer lost for words.
“I-you-what?”
“No one said I don’t feel the same way except for you.” Kate repeats the sentiment. Maybe it will click with him that she does feel the same, she just didn’t know how to bring it up after all this time had passed.
“If that were the case, why did you lie?” Castle doesn’t seem to be letting this get his hopes up. He’s been dealing with this for the past few weeks. He’d already accepted that Kate would never be with him. So why now? Why say this?
“The same reason I built a wall. If I let people get close it risks them getting hurt and I couldn’t risk that, not with you Rick. I learned over time that if I was strong on my own, that others wouldn’t-couldn’t worm their way in to break me. It was easier.”
“It sounds lonelier.”
“Maybe. But I lost someone I loved when I was young. I didn’t want to risk that kind of hurt again. You said it yourself. I hide in relationships with men I don’t love. It’s easier than risking everything and losing it all.”
“So hiding, running, all of that is to stop your heart from getting hurt?” Castle prompts. Kate nods slowly, before taking a long sip of the latte that will always remind her of Castle.
“That’s what Dr. Burke says I’ve been doing too. What he’s been trying to get me to not do anymore I guess.”
“Dr. Burke?”
“My therapist. He’s been helping me for a while.”
“I didn’t know you were in therapy.”
“I didn’t want to make excuses anymore. I wanted to be able to face everything that happened that day and no longer run from it.”
“And are you there?”
“Almost. And that wall I was telling you about, I think it’s almost all the way down. I’d like my partner to be there when it comes down.”
“I’d like to be there too.” Castle admits.
“So will you come back? To the 12th? The boys miss you.”
“I think I can. If the boys are missing me after all. Can’t let them down.”
“Can’t let the boys down.” Kate repeats his sentence.
“Or my partner.” Rick says reaching for Kate’s hand. They don’t usually have big touchy feely moments, but in the small moments of being able to hold her hand or hold her close, he’ll take all of it. Kate smiles up at him as she gently squeezes his hand back.
