Where is St Lucia/Lucian and what's it like there?
🇱🇨Saint Lucia changed hands of ownership between England & France 14 times!! Lol yes a whopping 14 times (7 times France, 7 times England) until England eventually won. But there is still many remnants of French influence that can be found like in our Kwèyól (Creole) language for example. We gained independence on February 22, 1979. We’re a volcanic island and you can even explore the Sulphur Springs where the (mostly inactive I hope🤣) volcano is. The drive in Sulphur Springs is one of our main tourist attractions along with our beautiful mountain peaks The Pitons. And if you like hiking you can tackle the Petit Piton and the more difficult Gros Piton. Like most islands we have our cultural events and our yearly carnival which is super lit 💃🏾✨🪅🎊🌴🇱🇨 Lots of great food especially fresh seafood and there are weekly fish frys you can attend in different parts of the island. There’s more I could mention but that’s a little quick summary for you 👍🏾❤️ 🏝️

Creole Portraits series by Jocelyn Gardner
Creole Portraits is a collection of hand-coloured lithographic portraits that reveal intricately braided Afro-centric hairstyles entwined within iron slave collars which were used to punish female slaves accused of inducing abortion. Each portrait also displays one of thirteen ‘exotic’ botanical specimens identified as having been used to induce abortion in the 18th century. Delicately hand-painted with watercolours, as was characteristic of natural history engravings of the period, each portrait is named after one of the botanical specimens using the established Linnaeun binominal system of nomenclature of the period in tandem with each slave’s plantation name; an act which parodies the imperial taxonomical systems.

on the topic of paime actually happy creole heritage month and belated jounen kwéyòl here is a good recipe for paime. you can use vegan margarine instead of butter (there is a good chance when she says butter she is talking about margarine anyway), you can use grated pumpkin instead of coconut and you can use pretty much any milk instead of coconut milk. the banana leaves are non negotiable though*

*kidding. you can replace those with foil.

"The god who created the sun which gives us light, who rouses the waves and rules the storm, though hidden in the clouds, he watches us. He sees all that the white man does. The god of the white man inspires him with crime, but our god calls upon us to do good works. Our god who is good to us orders us to revenge our wrongs. He will direct our arms and aid us. Throw away the symbol of the god of the whites who has so often caused us to weep, and listen to the voice of liberty, which speaks in the hearts of us all."
- Oungan (Vodou priest) Dutty Boukman, his Bois Caiman speech. These are the words that incited the Haitian Revolution on the night of 22 August 1791.
