Where is St Lucia/Lucian and what's it like there?
🇱🇨Saint Lucia changed hands of ownership between England & France 14 times!! Lol yes a whopping 14 times (7 times France, 7 times England) until England eventually won. But there is still many remnants of French influence that can be found like in our Kwèyól (Creole) language for example. We gained independence on February 22, 1979. We’re a volcanic island and you can even explore the Sulphur Springs where the (mostly inactive I hope🤣) volcano is. The drive in Sulphur Springs is one of our main tourist attractions along with our beautiful mountain peaks The Pitons. And if you like hiking you can tackle the Petit Piton and the more difficult Gros Piton. Like most islands we have our cultural events and our yearly carnival which is super lit 💃🏾✨🪅🎊🌴🇱🇨 Lots of great food especially fresh seafood and there are weekly fish frys you can attend in different parts of the island. There’s more I could mention but that’s a little quick summary for you 👍🏾❤️ 🏝️

Sperm whales are highly social creatures that roam the world’s oceans together, diving deep in search of giant squid, their favorite food. As they swim and hunt, these massive marine mammals communicate by making a series of rapid clicks that sound like a combination of “Morse code and popcorn popping,” writes NPR’s Lauren Sommer. Now, with help from artificial intelligence, scientists are starting to unravel some of the mysteries surrounding the sperm whale communication system. They found a plethora of sounds they’ve termed a “sperm whale phonetic alphabet,” raising the possibility that the mammals have their own language, just like humans. Researchers described their findings Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications. The new paper is the result of a collaborative research effort called Project CETI, which stands for “Cetacean Translation Initiative.” With the initiative, researchers were curious to know if advancements in machine learning and computing could help make sense of whale vocalizations. Scientists recorded a clan of 400 sperm whales in the Eastern Caribbean between 2005 and 2018, and they estimate at least 60 individuals ended up on the recordings. Using advanced computer algorithms, they detected patterns in the sounds—suggesting sperm whale communication may be more complex than previously assumed. Sperm whales rattle off a series of rapid-fire clicks that researchers have named “codas.” Each coda consists of between three and 40 clicks. In addition to changing the number of clicks they make in quick succession, whales often speed up or slow down the tempo of each coda—researchers call this “rubato.” Sometimes, they add an extra “click” at the end of a coda, which scientists call “ornamentation.”

Regular reminder that if you don't live in the Global North, nothing they have to say applies to the rest of us. Actually most things they say have little value anyway since the Global South and Eastern folks are afterthoughts to them, much less center us in their social justice.
- The USAmerican cultural hegemony has fuck all to do with us. Be aware of what they're trying to peddle you, but they have more power to harm and radicalise you than you have ever could to harm them. This applies to both the Western left and right wing. They are both equally racist, colonial and imperialist.
- Global North issues around capitalism, exploitation and piracy have nothing to do with us. Consumer activism might work to some extent over there idk, but if anyone brings it up over in the lands of the Black and brown people, you can laugh them out of the country.
- Their queer history is not ours. Congrats to Stonewall and all but that's just some shit that happened in the US. We need to dig past 18 different strata of cultural genocide and colonial garbage to mine our queer histories back into the light, and designing microlabel flags and fighting over colonizer language acronyms have fuck all to do with that either.
- Always pirate everything within reach. Save up and buy from authors and creators you really like (that's what I do – esp when it's a BIPOC creator), but people who can't afford to buy shit in the first place ain't stealing food out of anybody's mouths. Pirating is praxis and always has been since the days of the East India Company.
- Don't buy into the USAmerican theories of race. They aren't universal. "BIPOC" especially is a USAmerican specific term, it is not used in the UK or other settler colonies. Constructs of race and the tribal Other far predated European colonization; race as a colour system that exists today is simply one variation of it. The global apartheid against the mellanated takes many forms, histories and terminology. There are especially no "people of colour" in Asia, Africa, Caribbean and Polynesia. There are only people who live there, and "people of white".
Race is a fake, made-up conceptualization imposed by whoever has power within each region. It's ethnic, cultural and casteist, with no biological basis whatsoever. There is no uniformity, no universalism, no rhyme nor reason to any of it; the only people who know exactly who doesn't belong are the oppressors. I'm seeing concepts like "unambiguously black" floating around the terminally online Western left; any dark-skinned person of the Global South should split their sides laughing at it. Whites have no ambiguity on who the darkies are.
- Read, watch, listen to, play whatever the hell you want, just have the sense to pirate it, and to be very conscious about the narratives they try to smuggle.
- When the US and UK speak, listen with compassionate interest, offer what solidarity you can spare for their downtrodden, and then go back to reading and following your own fucking news. Focus on our own women's and reproductive rights, trans rights, queer histories, rise of fascism, militarisation, anti-blackness, class warfare, nationalist violence, imperialism etc. That is decolonization, that is emancipation from the Western cultural hegemony. Everything else is the bread and circuses of empire, in which both the left and right wing of the West are complicit.
We owe the Global North nothing more than we can each individually afford to extend to them on grounds of common human decency and compassion. Which is a lot more than they will ever reciprocate.

BOTD: Eastern Meadowlark
Photo: John Sutton
"A familiar bird, known by the black 'V' on its chest when it sings from a fencepost, or by the flash of white tail feathers when it flushes from the grass. The clear whistled song of the Eastern Meadowlark can be heard in spring not only in the East but also in desert grasslands of the Southwest. Some scientists believe that the southwestern form is actually a different species. Other races of the Eastern Meadowlark are widespread in Central America and northern South America."

Is it wrong/blasphemous to make an oc based off of a religious symbol I'm genuinely asking
Im into object shows so i made an object character and I like the aesthetic of it so I made an oc based off of this 🧿 evil eye amulet thing and I know its like a religious thing to ward off evil
So people from cultures that have these, would it be okay to make an oc based on it? I'm not doing it to be disrespectful, but I still want to be cautious

naming ocs is such a struggle in general but its especially a struggle when you want to name ur ocs realistic stuff thats of non white and/or non english speaking origin because like if ur a foolish monolingual english speaker like myself u gotta constantly outrun the churned out baby naming website listicles of non-english names listed with meanings they either garbled through a game of telephone at best or just straight made up at worst while trying to find any research source u can read thats half decent. fighting for my life out here
AND LIKE its not like i can ask any friends and acquaintances about this stuff like HOW do i ask some work buddy like hey. what culturally thoughtful name should i give my funny little cartoon guy. thank you and goodnight I CANT i cant do it orz
of course i dont mind a weird made-up name on occasion, but like. and this might be more important to me in particular as i am some kinda vaguely ambiguous mixed race person with very noticeably "ethnic" name for the north american country i live in who also has like 389423053742 vaguely ambiguous mixed race ocs but. you know. i love my oc Sci. and I love that his name is Sci short for Science Fiction. and I love that he's a second generation iranian canadian named Sci pronounced Sai short for Science Fiction. but a real human name would be nice sometimes too LOL
#lia and her friends names are all wack. on purpose but yeah#i think i mentioned before that their names were like shortened versions of placeholder names that just stuck#except rosie. he's just always been rosie HJKFDLSJFDS#but yeah i like those guys and their slightly wack names. well not all of them are wack#lia's just a slightly uncommon but not that uncommon alternate spelling of a very common name#bibi is technically a normal name in some cultures. but maybe not that normal on a young man of eastern european and indo caribbean descent#but maybe it IS normal on a young man of eastern european and indo caribbean descent. if you believe. in the power of friendship#eri and tora are also just like normal names in a few different cultures#em is a pretty common nickname for a lot of names like emily and emile and shit. and when i think about it a guy with indocaribbean heritag#having the name Emile would be pretty common where i live at least. but his name isnt emile. its just em JKLFDSJFDsd#theres no way i can rationalize Fell's name i dont think. she sounds like an AU fan character of some game. but thats okay i love her anywa#also yeah like 70% of the Lia Crystal Darling cast has some kinda indian caribbean heritage because i am. also of that LOL

EASTERN CARIBBEAN CENTRAL BANK dollars: 5,10,20,50, 100. The notes 20, 50, 100 $ have a holographic feature on polymer. This is a good method to know, they are from polymer = plastic material, though some banknotes may not have the feature and also are polymer, not paper money. I don"t mark in this blog which banknotes are paper and which are polymer, though some you can easy recognize.

the world if sims 4 had more lots per world
#SICKENINGGG I MISS TS3 BUT I LIKE THE MODS I HAVE FOR TS4 .#society if the sims game in my head existed irl goddddd#bc i got a mod u see IIII know yours shocked. i actully have had it 4 a while but basically i wanted to have umm a graveyard lot. bc one of#my mods also i love graveyards u gets it.#so i was checking my sims worlds thang bc i was hoping i could find a good place for my sims 3 live rhat i opersonally hc as being the same#town/very close 2 eachother#so i could split all the lots i wanted between the 2 kind of thing yk#but the only 'same town' worlds i have r new orleans (magnolia prom willow creek newcrest also miniopolis but thats not in this game) and#san fran (san sequoia and san myshuno (ik san myshuno isnt purely based on san francisco but i think its the most obvious also my map isnt#like This is exactly this ! kind of thing.simnation does nottt equal usa thats why canada is a part of it and also theres only 8 states LMA#i need 2 update it 4 the new world..... nice to have a new latinamerican world we r sooo sorely lacking#by my calculations (not absolute) we only have 2 in the entire series. and one of those is just a vacation world...#but now we have a new one andddd its a full world <3#so thats exciting. if u were curious i have isla paradiso as being in the sims equivalent of the caribbean and then i have selvadorada in#sims version of mesoamerica since the omiscans r based around there and stuff. + selvadorada might be el salvador reference i just think it#fits.#ciudad enamorada it seem will also be in the mesoamerica/mexico area#ik its also inspired by the iberian peninsula and stuff . but yk..#europe has a handful already even if by my calculations we dont have any that id place in the sims iberian peninsula.#but i feel theres something off abt that i think there was one that might be around there#why the fuck is tartosa not on my list UGH. the sims wiki the worlds section its missing a couple of ts4 worlds so some slipped thru#ok well yeah. id imagine tartosa as being around there. in the italy/spain/southern france sort of zone. so ill put it on the eastern bit o#the iberian peninsula since i already have a couple worlds in italyzone#so ya basically. if yr curious by my calculations africa is the most neglected continent (the world is entirely shocked.) bc im pretty sur#the only world i think is in africa. and this is a shocker. its the al simhara from ts3. bc thats literally in egypt#afaik there arent any others at least in mainline sims games..#also a shocker the continent w the most is north america. i know. try not to feak.#oh wait ive just realized that means there r no south american worlds. since mexico and el salvador r both in north america. the skeleton.#ok so south america is the least represented. i think.#again this is all based on Me imagining where things r so grain of salt okie?

BOTD: Eastern Wood-Pewee
Photo: Andrew Cannizzaro
"In eastern woods in summer, the plaintive whistled pee-a-wee of this small flycatcher is often heard before the bird is seen. The bird itself is usually somewhere in the leafy middle story of the trees, perched on a bare twig, darting out to catch passing insects. The Wood-Pewee sings most often at dawn and dusk, and it may continue singing quite late in the evening, after most songbirds have fallen silent."
