Alright, I waited to share my thoughts/criticisms on severance s2 because tbh for a bit I thought I just wouldn't, but I keep thinking about the show, so I might as well!
Typical disclaimer that this is all just my opinion. I know some people loved this season, and I know others are more like me and preferred s1. And both of those takes are okay! Either way, it's just a fun show to talk about!
Alright a couple links and then I'll jump in:
Here were my thoughts on s1. It's one of my favorite seasons of any show ever. I wrote that post right before s2 aired, when I was still young and naive and hopeful about the next season lol.
This post by failchild is a far better written and organized post that sums up my main criticisms as well. I reference it a few times in my thoughts and highly recommend reading it.
Discussion under the cut because it's gonna be a long one!
I managed to bucket my criticisms into four categories, with examples in each. Let's just jump in!
Too many new characters, too few consequences
I'm not sure it was even a show that needed new characters, yet we got so many this season! Imo, the heart of the show was always the four in MDR (see my s1 post). In addition to them as the main group, you had Cobel, Milchick. Devon and Ricken. Gemma/Ms. Casey, of course. Burt and Felicia. A substantial and valuable cast! Adding one or two new characters, sure, it's bound to happen, but with only 1-2 new ones, they could be fleshed out and worked in to the main story in a way that felt organic and like they were complex characters. Not a single character that was added this season felt that way to me. They fell flat, and ultimately barely made a mark in the story. For instance:
Drummond. Who is this man??? I'm sorry who is he?? Why did he start showing up with virtually no introduction? I think he and Helena might be siblings because he called Jame father but tbh with the weird cult stuff that could just be what they call their leader so idk for sure?? Why couldn't they have given him a proper introduction. One line. "Hey Helena your [half, full, who cares] brother is back from [literally any other implied Lumon site]." Or "Alright MDR, this is Drummond, Grainer's replacement for security." Like!! I know feeding exposition through dialogue is boring sometimes, but I sure can still benefit from it when it's a brand spanking new character! And then beyond that, what was his personality? Brooding, I guess. What was his job? To be antagonistic, I guess. The creator of the show has said that Drummond cares about Helena above everyone else, but I sure as hell didn't know that! They made eye contact sometimes, as people do. They said words to each other in a meeting, like twice. And I'm supposed to understand they care about each other on a deeper level, from that?? If you want to make claims about your characters, then you have to show me in the actual show instead of mentioning it retroactively. And then Drummond died. So none of it matters anyway. He was written in to be a brooding henchman and he died and that was it. No understanding of his motivations, his background, even really his role in the company or the family. And now he's dead so it doesn't even matter. Not to mention that Mark S. literally had no idea who he was when they fought. They'd never met before. To me, it made the fight feel less significant, and more violence for the sake of violence.
Ms Huang. I want to love Ms Huang, and I suppose in a way I do!! But I wanted to understand her, I wanted to know her. All I know is she is a child doing the same internship that Cobel did. Her presence I appreciated and could pick up on its significance without the show blatantly telling me (having a child manager is a shield for violence, Lumon has always and continues to use child labor, etc.). But what about Ms Huang herself?? What are her motivations, what is her background? Any question she was asked, she dismissed. And where is she now? Oh that's right. Sent away. I genuinely believe we'll never see her again, because her story was a dead end. She was a kid in an internship and it ended. What more would there be for her next season? So yes, the child worker was a "whoa" moment and it tells us something new about the company, but she's another new character who comes and goes with no actual consequence to the plot or main characters.
Dr. Maur. I hate this man. Who the fuck is this man. I get that someone had to be down there working on Gemma (I would have appreciated a nod to Cobel though, like she at least had some involvement since she sent Ms. Casey to the testing floor in s1) but this character felt less like a person and more like a nearly cartoonish villain. Just the creepy man doing creepy experiments. And then in the end? Mark and Gemma escape, get in the elevator before he can catch them. No real confrontation; he's not even in the room when Mark finds Gemma. idk if we'll see him again next season, but frankly if we don't, it won't make a difference.
Fields. I also hate this man. This was one of the new characters I was actually anticipating! I expected him to potentially be a very interesting and involved character! But nope. He's in one episode, is a real fucking freak, and then is gone. Doesn't matter. His character had zero consequences on the Burt/Irving plot, and I seriously doubt we'll ever see him again (good).
Lorne. Okay I do have a soft spot for Lorne, she is precious and good! But she only showed up when convenient. She talked to Mark and Helly/na when they showed up, and she saved Mark from Drummond. Last season there was a huge running theme about the departments coming together; Burt/Irving was about more than their romance, it was this idea of workers joining together. But Lorne only saved Mark because she just so happened to be there when he was in trouble (their departments never sought each other out again after their encounter). And then Mark leaves. And she...takes Emeile back to the other goats? I guess? Maybe we'll see her again, especially if the innies really are going to rise up in a more significant way. But who knows for sure.
A lack of consequences for everyone, actually
It's staggering, how little had actual consequences in this season. So much that happened either in s1 or started to happen in s2 just... didn't matter. For instance:
Reintegration. Everyone's talked about this already so I'll keep it short. But it felt so exciting that Mark was reintegrating so early, and that first shot on him on the table at the end of ep3 got me so hyped!! Only for nothing to happen. By the finale, even the way Mark is talking about it sounds like he's not actually done it (wild that after "flooding the chip" he's still acting right as rein [able to get into physical fights in fact] and having no issues, meanwhile Petey was out here fighting for his life just to take a damn shower). It felt like Mark could have just been considering reintegration and nothing would have been different in the plot. "But we needed it for Gemma's episode!" Except we didn't? Nothing about that ep felt like reintegration as we've seen it. He honest to god could have just stared wistfully at a photo of his wife and they could have jumped into flashbacks that way.
Helena's YouTuber ass apology video and general lack of outside world response. This ties into the whole world feeling a lot smaller this season that failchild talked about, but it's really frustrating that the s1 finale essentially ended up having zero consequences. I feel like with as many people as were shown in s1 to protest severance or hate Lumon, at least some people in the outside world would be calling bullshit on Helena's excuse for what Helly said at the party. But what? She made the video and everyone was like "oh okay" and dropped it? I'm not saying this had to be a huge plot point, but like, idk. At least show me some protestors outside the property! Have the news on in the background, have Helena mention being annoyed at journalists asking her more questions! Just any acknowledgement that what Helly did at least made ripples, because that finale felt so huge when it came out. And the way the s2 treated it, essentially nothing was accomplished from an honestly incredible thing that Helly managed to pull off.
Milchick. Again, I think people have already talked about this a lot, so I'll keep it short, but. I so greatly wanted to learn more about Milchick this season. I wanted to know his backstory, his motivations, his dreams, anything. He had a bigger part this season, so I was hoping to see some form of character development, whether for the good or bad, I didn't care! Just something changing within him. But despite everything he faced, nothing changed? I guess he told Drummond to eat shit (which again, a weird lack of consequences he faced for that), but then was like "whelp, back to doing what I always do!" I guess I just went into this season wanting to understand Milchick more, and I still don't. He had the same outcome as s1, still essentially a henchmen trying to control innies. Except this time we got to see people be racist towards him. ...cool.
Ricken's storyline. Not much to say here other than Ricken played such an interesting role in s1, with his book inspiring the innies. They started to go somewhere with that but got bored I guess?? Anyway, hope him and Eleanor are doing okay lol.
The board???? So. What happened to the board. Remember when everyone reported to the board? When every vital decision seemed up to the board? When Cobel used to speak to them through Natalie. When, hell, in this very season, Mark plugged in that speaker and that's how he got his friends back!! Why did the board just like, completely disappear by the end of the show? The board wasn't in the back half of the season at all, let alone in the finale!! Supposedly the most important day in Lumon's history, and the board just?? isn't there?? Isn't even mentioned. I have no idea why they dropped this concept. There for awhile it was one of the more fun mysteries of the show, and now it's like it hardly even existed.
The core group is gone: Irv, my beloved, I'm so sorry
Again, this has been talked about a lot already, but just. Man I'm ngl sometimes I now get emotional over s1 clips because look how much those four used to mean to each other!! They were a family!! And now that's all gone and it's like the characters don't even care?
Irv. By far the biggest disappointment in this season for me personally was Irv's story. It's almost hard for me to talk about because it bothered me so much. You had an incredible character, with an amazing actor, and you said "eh. Send him away." And then everyone just went with it?? I thought for sure they were going to raise hell to bring him back; they'd do the work as four or they wouldn't do it at all!! But no, they just...had a weird funeral. And moved on. I really thought what Irv did for Helly was the set up, the first half, of a full circle moment for the two of them. Imagine how emotionally fulfilling their reunion would be?? Imagine how much it would have developed their relationship! It would have been so cool. But no, Irv is just gone, and honestly nearly forgotten in a way that feels almost like an insult to s1 imo.
Dylan also was very much in his own world this season and I can't decide if it's in character? Like yeah him getting to see Gretchen was huge and I get that, but just. Idk, he loved his MDR family too, so much so that he stayed behind for them in s1!! He was always involved, he always wanted to be involved!! But then Milchick, who he hated by the end of last season, says "hey buddy maybe stay quiet" and he just does?? Idk man, felt a little convenient.
And then Mark and Helly were just. Idk man I'm not making this about ships. I liked when they kissed in s1; it felt authentic. But then this season they ramped it up to 100 and I just. Sorry. It felt so fast to me. It felt like they disregarded everything around them for the sake of themselves and that doesn't feel reflective of the characters I knew in s1?
The Lumon (and Cold Harbor) of it all
Other people have talked about this too, but there were some questionable choices in my opinion about Mark's sudden over-importance to Lumon, and also Lumon at large felt less coherent to me this season.
Why does everyone have to be in on the conspiracy? I'm mostly talking about Burt here. Why was he was Lumon cronie? I really thought that Outie Burt and Irv's story would have been an interesting character-based story, about this premise of loving someone but them being with someone else. Maybe a tale as old as time for some, but I think through the lens of two older queer men, and with the innie versus outie dynamic, it could have been a really refreshing story? It didn't need to be about Lumon. Not everything in s1 was directly about Lumon (Mark's relationship with Devon and Ricken, Mark dating Alexa, his attempts to talk to Petey's daughter, etc.). The only spy was Cobel and it made sense given her job within Lumon. But Burt?? Mr. Fine Arts degree Burt?? Was also the hit driver during his off hours?? The Burt/Irv storyline could have gone about a thousand different directions, and that was just... not the one I wanted, frankly. And tbh with how little screen time it got and how abruptly it ended, I seriously wonder how dedicated to the storyline the writers were either.
Cold Harbor's sudden urgency. Failchild's post covers the flaws of Mark as suddenly the most important guy really well, so I won't get to into that exactly, but from the very first mention of Cold Harbor, I had my hackles up. Before, a huge theme of the show was MDR just doing the mysterious work. There were quarters to meet, but no ultimate goal or end point. Then in s2, all of the sudden everything is urgent, everything is superlative. This Has to get Done. It is the Most Important Thing Ever. If it happens, Gemma will Die and Mark/all of MDR will be Fired and will therefore also Die (which the internal logic of that from both a science and business perspective... sighs I won't get into it). Maybe this is a weird take, but I didn't need the Ms. Casey/Gemma story to have urgency; I didn't need her life to be on the line for me to want her out of there!! It just felt so jarring to go from s1 of "they're all doing this weird work that has existed for at least a few years with several different people who came and went from the team" to "all of this is for Mark and Gemma and that is all that matters for the entirety of Lumon, and after today it will all be Complete and Done Forever". Like...what?
Additionally, in s1, Petey's map says "people live down here". There's this fear that people, plural, don't get to have outies. Yet when we finally see Gemma in s2, she's alone in this gigantic hallway maze. There are 25 rooms all for her and her alone! Again, suddenly in s2 She is The One. The rest of the MDR files are?? Fake?? There... aren't multiple people trapped down there?? Lumon's whole success rests on her and Mark's shoulders alone?? IF IT ONLY WORKS WITH MARK AND GEMMA HOW ARE YOU GOING TO TURN IT INTO SOMETHING USEABLE FOR LITERALLY ANYONE ELSE??? Sorry, I got carried away...my point is, in s1 it felt like a different story. It felt like MDR would care because Ms. Casey was one of them and she potentially represented a greater, darker world of permanent innies. But that was completely forgotten in s2.
Another contradicting detail was the marching band. Don't get me wrong, it was fun watching Tillman lead a band, but...why is there a severed marching band? It just doesn't align with the original theme of the severed floor, which was about keeping innies separate and departments small, for doing mysterious and important work. What possible other roles could a marching band have fulfilled on the severed floor?
Possibly my favorite point that failchild brought up was the way s2 dropped the corporate satire theme from the show, when that was originally what made it such a refreshing concept. I think my points in this section all nod to that at their core. The cult-y Kier stuff was fun as undertones in s1, but it taking over has made it harder to understand (or take seriously tbh) Lumon's actual power and goals as a corporation at large.
In conclusion
Okay that was a lot of criticisms! lol whoops. Tbh I think the writers had a huge challenge to accomplish after s1; it's a tough premise that had set at a ridiculously high standard in s1. And I think them getting to do this season at all, after 3 years, was so exciting and fun to watch! I wish things had gone differently, but hey, that's just how watching TV goes sometimes. I'll still stick around for s3--who knows how that'll go! (Please bring Irv back, please make Gemma a main character, please do something new with Milchick).
If there's something I didn't touch on in this that you'd like my opinion on, or want me to elaborate on something I did say, feel free to send me an ask! I genuinely like talking about this show even if it accidentally came off as haterism lol.

Episode V. Chapter 6 — Reapers and Revelations
Three messages taunted us soon after defeating the theater master.
[Main Scenario #3 — Emergency Defense has ended.]
[You have obtained 1,000 coins as compensation.]
[The fourth main scenario is about to begin!]
"It hasn't even been ten minutes," groaned Jihye. "Can't we get a break?"
Dokja stretched his arm that had taken the brunt of the fall when he was punched earlier. "Actually, Jihye, I need you to watch Yoo Joonghyuk. Stay here with him until he wakes. And please inform me when he wakes up...I want to give him a few more hits."
His eyes slid to me at his last words, then back to Jihye. She nodded and took up a position watching over Joonghyuk. I picked up Gilyoung, who had fallen into a deep sleep soon after wishing on the meteor shower. He curled against my chest, murmuring.
Dokja, Heewon, Namwoon, and I made our way down. The dungeon had become a regular theater once again.
No one felt like speaking. Heewon twisted her loose locks aimlessly around her finger as she was lost in thought; Dokja lugged the shield for Hyunsung, tapping along the rim; Namwoon, I watched the closest, seemed to be dragging his feet, a slight droop to his shoulders.
Dokja's steps faltered, then his face flipped between reactions, like he was having a conversation. Bihyung was talking to him. This, I knew, because I had reread that part only yesterday.
I nudged into Dokja to catch his attention. "You can say anything about that novel and it should filter, even for Bihyung," I said in a soft voice.
The dokkaebi in question immediately popped into existence, right in front of my face. I heard Heewon yell and unsheathe her new sword.
[I've had enough. What the hell are you?]
Though he was rather cute in his still-small size, the force of his voice overwhelmed my senses at such a close distance. I had to activate my rationality skill to quell my fighting instincts.
I looked to my three companions, equally alert and tense beside me. "It's fine. Go down to the platform, and I'll catch up."
Dokja's hard expression turned from Bihyung to me. "No way."
"You need to be there for the next scenario, Dokja." His face cracked with the hesitation, so I pushed. "Take Chungmuro. Gong Pildu is under contract, yes? Then the station is yours. You can follow the King's Road before Joonghyuk."
At Heewon's concerned glance at the sleeping boy in my arms, I set him gently by the wall. "Gilyoung will be safer up here for the time being."
Dokja made a noise somewhere between frustration and acceptance.
"...Fine. Come on, Heewon-ssi, Namwoon." Dokja's eyes flitted between me and Bihyung, and I knew what his meaningful glance was telling me:
Be careful.
We seemed to be making the phrase into a new habit.
I stopped Namwoon with a hand on his shoulder. The other two had gone on downstairs, but I still whispered.
"There will be a flag, and Dokja must take it. He should have things handled with Gong Pildu, but if anyone else gets dangerously close—I want you to kill them."
Namwoon nodded, his head hung low as he wouldn't meet my eyes. Then he left.
[You...what are you?]
I looked at Bihyung. We had not yet spoken directly like this in the current turn. "I am an incarnation."
[You're not normal.]
"What do you think I am?"
[Ha. I don't know what to think. That's why I asked.]
Bihyung shook. Whether it was in fury or fear was yet to be determined, but neither one was very good for me. His red eyes were twin pools of magma eager to burn me.
I tried a different track. "I could tell you. But the constellations will anger with you if this conversation is also filtered."
His teeth bared in a horrific grin.
[Luckily, there are more exciting things happening down below. I've closed off this part of the channel.]
My face was carefully neutral, but inside I was reeling. Could he do that in the novel? Not for the first time, I cursed not having the crazy ability to recall minute details of a novel like Kim Dokja. The only things I could remember were times when Bihyung used ads to block conversations with Dokja; but it made sense that he could control the channel video feed as well. I tucked away this important information to use in the future.
For now, I was alone.
"Let's speak freely then. This is my second turn at life." I crossed my arms.
[A returner?]
Bihyung's eyes popped. Whatever he had expected, it must not have been that.
[Shit. That's good, right? More excitement to stir up entertainment. No...she could ruin my growing channel with her knowledge, shit. What to do, what to do...]
I snapped my fingers at the mumbling dokkaebi. "Hey. Listen. Kill me and you will have the wrath of certain powerful constellations down your toga. I think you know who."
[...]
"And," I said, arching my brow. "In my last turn your channel was weak. Uninteresting. Already in this turn, you've exploded in growth more than in nearly twenty scenarios before. You need variables like me."
Bihyung watched me for a long time. Then he let out a screech like a rusty bike tire—his laugh.
[You and Kim Dokja are one and the same. Is he a returner, too?]
I shrugged.
[...I didn't expect you to tell me anyways. So, I suppose you want to make a deal with me?]
"No. Just leave me be."
At that, Bihyung crackled with energy. Definitely fury this time.
[How arrogant. A mere incarnation, giving ME a demand.]
"You said it yourself. I'm not a normal incarnation."
[The exclusive skill 'Sacred Light Lv. 6' has been activated!]
I had leveled up after the fight with the theater master.
In a flash, ribbons of light slithered towards Bihyung. He shouted as they suspended him in place, wrapping around his body in pretty gold stripes.
"I killed plenty of constellations in my last turn. If I could kill a constellation, then how easy would it be to kill a low-level dokkaebi?"
Level six wasn't the best, but it was sufficiently strong for a lower dokkaebi like Bihyung. My mana was the real hurdle.
"But I don't want to kill you. In fact, I quite like you, Bihyung. I think you'll be a great help to us in the future; perhaps even a friend."
My light twisted, tightening and shaping around the seething dokkaebi. I wanted to take advantage of this private conversation.
"This sacred light was given to me by Mother. Do you know who my Mother is? My sponsor?"
[...No.]
Interesting. So she was still a mystery to him in this world-turn, too. "I want to keep it that way. Please redirect any comments or questions about her from other constellations, and send them to me. Actually, scrub out her name, while you're at it."
[I thought you didn't want a deal.]
"I don't. Think of this as a friendly exchange."
Bihyung scoffed. It sounded ridiculous, but I was confident. Even more so as I used fifty accumulated luck from my skill, 'Bank of Lady Fortune.'
[Withdrawal successful. You now have: 47/500 luck.]
"In return, I'll do my best to avoid talking about my status as a returner. Then there will be no censoring, no outraged constellations down your throat."
Gilyoung snored loudly in the silence that followed.
[I...keuuk...okay. I'll do it. Can you release the bindings now?]
"They're not bindings."
Bihyung looked down to find a giant golden bow atop his stomach. Two more adorned each of his little horns. It was terribly cute.
I couldn't help a small chuckle as I released my skill. "You make a lovely present."
[You really—huh?! Oh, nothing to worry—apologies, dear constellations—ah, yes, I've fixed the issue now. It's back on. Ahaha. See?]
Bihyung gave me one last, inscrutable glance before he zapped away. I picked Gilyoung back up and continued down.
"Hm, maybe I was too harsh with him..."
I wanted Bihyung to think well of me. I wasn't lying when I said I liked him; I did, very much so. But it was a bit early in the story to befriend a dokkaebi.
Though I had used luck, it really only worked in this situation because Bihyung was waffling between decisions to begin with. Had he been hellbent on killing me, or refusing the favor, my luck would have been powerless.
Well, it worked out in the end. Hopefully my sponsor would be satisfied.
The Mother of Divine Desire.
The reality was...I didn't know much more about her than Bihyung. What little we had communicated in the last round was mainly about me and my development as an incarnation. She always brushed off any questions about herself.
In fact, I didn't know if Mother would approve of my actions just now. Perhaps she would be furious. But I had to trust in her—she had chosen me, so she must believe in my judgment and methods.
Blind faith was not something I excelled at. But she had proven a faith in me, so for that, I must try.
Just as I reached the bottom of the stairs, a ping alerted me to the latest development.
['Kim Dokja' has claimed the 'white' flag!]
I smiled.
"Take the flag! There's only five minutes!"
Hyunsung grabbed his new shield and protected Dokja and the others from the Landlord Alliance. I kicked a rock in between the two sides.
"Gong Pildu-ssi, Kim Dokja will be our representative."
All eyes swiveled to me. Sangah called out my name, and I entrusted her with the still-sleeping Gilyoung.
"Yeona," Gong Pildu said. "Where have you been? Do you know what this sly bastard and his accomplices—?!"
As Gong Pildu struggled to get up, I caught the dirty imprint of a boot on his back. I turned to Dokja just as he ordered Gong Pildu to stay down. "Keep your head to the floor and your mouth shut until I tell you otherwise."
"Dokja! You didn't need to step on him."
His lips thinned, annoyed. "I didn't see him down there."
"Sure you didn't." I rolled my eyes.
"What, not happy I beat up your father?" he said with a touch too much snark.
Hyunsung lowered his shield as I approached. "Father?" I heard Heewon ask from the back. My finger poked the hard bulletproof vest on Dokja's chest.
"You have the command," I spoke quietly. "Now it's time to gather more people to your side...pretending to be cruel won't help your case."
Dokja seemed to really consider my words. He nodded once, then ordered Gong Pildu to get up and move freely—but still unable to take the flag.
I was satisfied and went over to help Gong Pildu to his feet.
"You're a lovesick fool, girl," he muttered, and my ears felt hot. What was with these people and their bloodhound abilities to sniff out my emotions? Or was I truly that transparent?
"You don't approve?" I tried teasing, but it came out a bit weak.
He scowled. "Certainly not. He's trouble; you can do far better."
"Don't worry, it's one-sided, anyways."
Gong Pildu gave me a scrutinizing look, almost like he was trying to figure out if I was joking, then he brushed his clothes free of dust and walked away. He mumbled something that sounded suspiciously like "if only."
Before I could call him back to ask, my attention was drawn back to the current sub-scenario.
"Choose whether you'll stay here, under me, or leave Chungmuro," said Dokja, his voice ringing out.
The other people of Chungmuro station, Alliance members and random strangers alike, began shouting their doubts and questions at Dokja. He answered each one calmly and with ease. "...Oh, don't mind Gong Pildu. That guy belongs to me, now!"
At a sharp look from me, he amended the statement. "I just mean he's under strict control."
[The sub-scenario has ended.]
In the end, only three men left Chungmuro station. Twenty-eight remained.
Based on Dokja's click of the tongue as he read Star Stream messages, I summarised that he still didn't have enough credibility to earn the "king" title.
[Well then, let's begin the main game.]
Bihyung zeroed in on me as he snapped his fingers.
[The fourth main scenario has been activated!]
I read the clear conditions for capture the flag. It was the exact same as in the novel; I had been worried Bihyung might change up the details of this one, as revenge for my bold...threats. Yeah, I was kind of threatening towards him.
But Bihyung wished us luck and vanished from the room as fast as he came.
The group broke into discussion about the main scenario, and I saw Dokja go talk to Gong Pildu. I went over to sit by Namwoon, who was staring off at the grimy wall opposite him.
"Thank you for keeping watch earlier," I told Namwoon.
His expression only clouded over more. "I didn't do anything. I didn't help."
I sensed his turmoil and put a hesitant hand on his shoulder. "Namwoon, was it too much of me to ask for you to possibly kill those people?"
"No," he said quickly. "I don't care about that."
"Then what...?"
"Noona." I was alarmed as his red eyes became wobbly with unshed tears.
I wrapped my arm around him as he clutched his knees. "No 'angel'?" I tried.
"I don't deserve to call you that," he choked out. "I attacked you—you got hurt because of me—"
So it was that. My hand moved to pet his hair; it was surprisingly soft for how spiky it appeared. "If you want forgiveness, then of course I forgive you. But you don't need it. The theater master was controlling your mind—you did nothing wrong."
"But I wanted to hurt you." His voice was rough. Troubled. "I felt it."
[The constellation 'Abyssal Black Flame Dragon' looks upon his incarnation with sorrow.]
I pushed his head back to look him directly in the eye. "Kim Namwoon. The theater master twists minds. Sure, you're a violent kid, sometimes to the extreme, and maybe you're a delusional demon...and you're most definitely a chuunibyou and otaku. But none of that makes you a villain who likes hurting his companions." I flicked his forehead lightly. "Plus, I like all those things about you."
"Y—you do?"
"Of course. Why do you think I took you in that day on the train?" I smiled. "I wanted that badass, nerdy kid on my team."
Namwoon nuzzled against my hand, eyes closed, almost purring with content. "I'm not a nerd, though," he mumbled.
There was a cough nearby.
Dokja looked rather unimpressed. I gestured from him to the younger boy, and mouthed, say something nice.
With a pained grimace, he said, reluctantly, "Kim Namwoon, you fight well."
...Are you serious? My thoughts flattened in disbelief, and it must have shown on my face because Dokja heaved a great sigh and said, "And it's good that you're with us."
Despite the questionable quality (and sincerity) of the compliments, they made Namwoon perk up. "I am insanely strong, aren't I? And I'll grow even stronger with a dragon as my sire." It was such a chuuni thing to say that I had to cough to hide my laugh. "Stronger than you, too, ahjussi, just you wait."
Then Namwoon tore away from my side and raced down the hall, cackling with a newfound determination.
"I—I am not that old!"
I hid my smile at the offense on Dokja's face. "He's been spending too much time around Lee Jihye, it seems."
"These damn kids," said Dokja without any real ire, but sounding very much like an old ahjussi.
This time I let my laughter ring out freely.
"I don't understand why you like him so much," said Dokja. There was a pinch between his brows, a contempt that seemed directed inwards, and perhaps he was thinking of how similar the two of them were. A sear went through my chest. I knew of his self-loathing, but it was heartbreaking to witness for real. I didn't know what to say without revealing my intimate knowledge of him.
"I think he's worthy of being our companion," I finally responded. "And he has a good heart. Uh...even with his craziness."
Dokja stared at me, a peculiar expression on his face.
VROOM! VROOM, VROOOM!
We leapt down onto the train tracks in time to see a group of men and women hop off their motorbikes. Dokja raised his sword.
"Stop there. Put down your weapons."
A gentle-looking man stepped into the light, hands raised. "We didn't come for a fight."
"Then why did you come?"
"Well, first I should introduce myself. I'm Kang Ilhun from the Dongdaemun Group."
Dokja was sharp, calculating, as he studied Kang Ilhun. "Kim Dokja."
"Kim Dokja-ssi..." Something flashed in Kang Ilhun's face. "We are here to offer an alliance."
After more back and forth with the Dongdaemun Group, Dokja, Heewon, Sangah, Hyunsung, and I broke away to form a quick plan. "...and Hyunsung-ssi will stay here with Gong Pildu to protect—"
"No," I interjected, remembering what was to come. "I'll stay, and Hyunsung will join you all."
They moved to leave, but I sought Dokja's attention one last time.
"Come back quickly." The gravity in my voice drew a furrow to his brows, but I urged him on ahead.
I then went to Gong Pildu after they had left. "Set up your private property on this floor. As wide as you can make it. We're going to need your turrets soon."
He did as I asked. In the meantime, I moved Gilyoung to a better-shielded corner to continue sleeping. Namwoon was still off somewhere, but I figured the sound of fighting would draw him back eventually.
That was when the Myeongdong Group attacked.
[Someone has invaded private property!]
"What are these bastards—!" Gong Pildu raged as his skills activated.
"Gain control later! I just need to put the flag in and it will be over," shouted a man with a red 'Myeongdong' flag tied around his head. He buffed his teammates with the power of the red flag.
I killed a few that attacked me, as bullets from Gong Pildu's turrets streamed past my head.
"Hahahaha look at these weaklings?!"
Namwoon had returned in full glory, and now hacked away at the nearest intruders. I sent an arrow to pierce the back of one that swung too close to Namwoon while he was turned.
He looked at the arrow with renewed interest. "Angel-noona, when I steal their flag...can I have my kiss on the cheek?"
As he spoke, Gong Pildu's turrets blasted at the Myeongdong Group. I wasn't given the chance to respond.
"RETREAT!" someone shouted.
Their leader jumped down to the train tracks, his men following, and before Namwoon could leap after them a great flame erupted. Screams were drowned out by the firing of Gong Pildu's turrets gunning them down.
The smoke cleared, and a red flag floated to the ground.
"It's mine!" Namwoon raced past Gong Pildu, arm outstretched, but before he could grab the flag it was snatched away.
Kim Dokja hopped onto the platform. "Oh, did you want this?"
Namwoon's mouth twisted sourly, and Gong Pildu mumbled, "Son of a bitch."
There was no one left of Myeongdong besides Kang Ilhun, who was now tied with Sangah's threads and carried back by Lee Hyunsung. Dokja gathered us around Kang Ilhun and demanded the source of his information. Kang Ilhun panicked at the first mention of torture; he broke entirely when threatened with death.
"The prophets! The prophets are in Dongmyo Station!" Then Kang Ilhun's eyes widened as his mouth foamed.
I sent a clamp of sacred light between his teeth before he could bite off his own tongue.
Eventually, Dokja left to check on Joonghyuk, and I helped clear away the bodies with the others. Gilyoung had woken up at some point and latched onto my side as we worked.
[The constellation 'Demon-like Judge of Fire' warns you!!]
What? What was happening?!
[The constellation 'Prisoner of the Golden Headband' is confused.]
[The constellation 'Abyssal Black Flame Dragon' wants to blast 'Kim Dokja' to pieces!]
[The constellation 'Abyssal Black Flame Dragon' reaffirms that his incarnation is the better choice.]
[The constellation 'Secretive Plotter' thinks that 'Kim Dokja' is a bastard philanderer.]
[Many constellations are shocked by the truth of the filtered conversation and 'Kim Dokja's' affections.]
Excuse me? Before my feet could carry me back to the Theater Dungeon, Dokja reappeared at the bottom of the stairs, slightly out of breath.
"Lee Jihye spews nothing but bullshit. And everyone is an idiot," said Dokja loudly.
[The constellation 'Demon-like Judge of Fire' looks at you mournfully, because 'Kim Dokja's' heart is pulled in many directions.]
...I think I understood. "It's fine, Uriel. Don't pay it any mind."
She sent me five hundred pity coins, anyways.
Dokja, after stalling for a few minutes in front of me and the stream of constellation messages in front of him, had his mind drawn back to the issue of prophets, and he tucked away to search for the answer on his phone.
I rejoined our companions.
"So that bastard and his group tried to attack us?" Sangah and I were catching Gilyoung up on what he had missed, and the new main scenario. I nodded, and Gilyoung gripped Thor's hammer. "We should kill him."
Sangah startled, but I placed a hand on his knee. "He can help us find the person that sent them to us, so, for now, let's wait."
[Oho, but you might find another use for him.]
Bihyung sneered down at us, a gleam in his darkened, red eyes. I had a bad feeling about this. Maaaybe I shouldn't have antagonized a dokkaebi so early in the scenarios.
[We're going to spice things up around here. Life's no fun when it's easy, eh?]
He called out to everyone gathered in Chungmuro Station.
[Enjoy the games.]
...Games?
[A hidden scenario has arrived.]
[Hidden Scenario — Angels vs. Reaper] Category: Hidden Difficulty: B+ Clear Conditions: 1. The Angel of Judgement must uncover the identity of the Reaper and input their name before the time limit runs out. 2. The Guardian Angel can input two names per day, including themselves if they so choose, to protect against death from the Reaper. These two people must change each day. 3. The Reaper must input one name per day to die. They must not be caught by the Angel of Judgement. 4. At the end of the time limit, if the Reaper has killed a sufficient number of people and escaped judgement, they win; if the Angels catch the Reaper and escape death, they win. There can only be one winning side. Time Limit: 4 days Compensation: 4,000 coins to each victor Failure: For the two Angels, the loss of one captured-station rank for your group. For the Reaper, death.
Damn it. God fucking damn it. How did Bihyung even have the plausibility for this sort of trick? He must have insane backing from a higher-dokkaebi or some bloodthirsty, conniving constellations. Perhaps both.
Even before it popped up in front of me, I knew.
[You are the Reaper.]
[You have 23:59:58 to kill someone.]
[Input name here: __________]
All the luck in the world wouldn't get me out of this one.

(I can write any gender dw, also tell your mom i said thank you 😊) (and i think you may be.....hmmmmm....this is so hard....THE idia anon...hmmm so hard)
Tumblr media
Idia was in shambles.
Not in the usual “I ran out of my favorite energy drink” way or the “I have to go outside for a group project” kind of way. No, this was worse. Way worse.
His very buff, very shirtless, very sweaty boyfriend was currently sprawled out on the floor of his room, casually stretching after a workout.
In his room.
Where there was no ventilation.
Where there was barely any floor space because of the sheer amount of figurines, consoles, and various limited-edition collector’s items scattered around.
Idia was sitting in his gaming chair, frozen like a man whose entire system had just blue-screened. His hair flickered between orange and pink, glowing brighter with every second he spent trying not to combust.
Muscles.
So many muscles.
Why did his boyfriend have to be built like a final boss? No, worse—like a secret unlockable character that only the most dedicated players could access. And yet, here he was, dating him. Him, of all people!
“Hey, babe, I’m gonna take a shower,” his boyfriend announced casually, standing up with a stretch that made every muscle flex in tandem, sending Idia into yet another crisis.
Idia opened his mouth. He wasn’t sure what he was going to say, but what came out was: “C-can I come?”
His boyfriend raised an eyebrow. “...Sure?”
Wait. Wait, no. That was a joke. He hadn’t expected an actual yes. Abort mission. Eject. Escape button spam.
And yet, ten minutes later, here they were.
In the bathtub.
Together.
Wearing swim trunks because, despite his own insanity, Idia was a man of dignity (and fear). His boyfriend, meanwhile, lounged against the back of the tub with all the grace of someone who had no idea he was causing an existential meltdown in his beloved.
“You know,” Idia muttered, arms wrapped around his knees as he peeked over them. “You could, like, date literally anyone, right?”
His boyfriend cracked an eye open. “What?”
“I mean, look at you. You’re hot. And muscular. And hot. And you look like you could tear someone in half for looking at you funny.” Idia sighed dramatically, sinking a little lower into the water. “Meanwhile, I look like I haven’t seen the sun in ten years and probably have, like, a million vitamin deficiencies.”
“Yeah, and?”
Idia blinked. “And???”
His boyfriend leaned forward, sliding an arm around Idia’s waist and effortlessly pulling him against his broad chest. “I like that about you,” he said, nuzzling into the crook of Idia’s neck with a satisfied sigh. “My type is guys who look like they were raised in a server room and subsist entirely off instant ramen and spite.”
Idia let out a sound somewhere between a squeak and a strangled laugh. “That’s so weird.”
“Good thing I’m weird then,” his boyfriend murmured, pressing a lingering kiss to Idia’s temple. “Besides, you are hot. Just in a different way.”
Idia scoffed. “Yeah? How?”
His boyfriend smirked, tightening his hold around Idia and pulling him fully into his lap. “You’ve got that ‘mysterious shut-in’ charm, y’know? It’s cute. Plus, you’re crazy smart. And funny. And you’ve got these pretty eyes that glow in the dark—”
“Okay, okay, stop, I get it—” Idia whined, burying his burning face in his boyfriend’s shoulder.
His boyfriend just chuckled, pressing another kiss to his cheek. “Nope. Not stopping. You’re hot, deal with it.”
Idia grumbled incoherently, but he didn’t pull away. If anything, he melted further into the embrace, letting the warmth of the water—and his boyfriend—soothe his overworked nerves.
Maybe this wasn’t so bad after all.

Say Hello to Spring!!!
Tumblr media
Sonic the hedgehog was probably the first piece of media that I was really into as a kid, my gateway into it being a Sonic the hedgehog and Megaman crossover comic I got at a comic store. So it holds a special place in my heart, even if I don’t really keep up with the franchise anymore
Anyway, Spring has changed a lot over the years to the point that she’s an entirely different character than who she started out as. She used to be called Crystal and was a Mary sue hybrid of a character, but now she’s a really stretchy fox that belongs to a sect of mobians that haven’t completely lost their natural instincts yet. When put under extreme amounts of stress, these mobians will enter a more primal survival state that will choose fight flight or freeze. I was thinking of removing this aspect of them completely but I still think it’s a kind of neat concept.
It’s funny because I made Spring before I knew who Tangle was and they’re both very similar characters. I still don’t know much about Tangle character-wise so I’m unsure if they’re similar in that regard but spring is a very energetic extroverted character that has very little filter and is painfully blunt. They have an inappropriate tendency to swear because I thought it’d be funny to see this ray of sunshine swear like a sailor with no malice behind it. He can be very oblivious to the goings on around them, but will be hyper aware of the plot if it’s comedic for them to. You can probably tell that tails is my favorite considering how I draw Spring. Her fur coat changes with the seasons, though I don’t have art of that here.
She’s a very silly guy
Really old sketches with newer redraws:

I also want to credit IndigoBeatss on twitter for driving me to practice the hell out of this art style because of how much I loved the way they drew (we’ve never talked, I’ve just been in awe of their art since I first laid eyes on it)

some lazy gideon sketches. He’s so hard to draw btw, if you haven’t tried drawing him for yourself yet give it a go and come feel the pain with me.
WARNING: incoherent analysis rant below, proceed at your own risk!!!
I’ve been struggling with drawing him for a while now, especially his hair and face, and I’ve been thinking about how his design has probably changed the most out of everyone. His appearance has always been incredibly inconsistent, and while it used to irk me (mostly because it makes it hard to find reliable drawing references) I’ve come to have an appreciation for every variation, and I’m starting to realize why they exist at all.
I don’t think there will ever be a completed or finalized version of gideon’s design, and it has to do with his oddly contradictory and complex personality/character.
On one hand, he’s a manipulative, cunning, vengeful, smooth-talking maniac. He owns an incredibly successful media company, of all things, and is a total dick to almost everyone around him, showing little care for his allies. Yet he’s also a romantic obsessive who can’t handle a rejection and goes through the effort of forming an entire league to control ramona’s love life despite not really seeming to even know why he bothers at this point.
But at the same time… he’s also a huge nerd and a hopeless loser who watches anime and binges junk food in his spare time, who ends up yielding to the first woman more assertive than he is. He’s kind of ridiculous, to put it simply, and every iteration has its own interpretation of the character.
It’s very difficult to capture all sides of his character in one, singular design because truthfully, gideon is one of the more complex characters in the series, having such an odd array of characterics that somehow just work, yet are nearly impossible to display all at once.
I think the best design so far is still the comic book version, which has a good overall balance between nerdy, business and crazed lunatic, but I think every design so far has its own strengths to boast, none of them really feeling… complete? if that makes sense? There’s something to like in every version, yet none have contained his full character. There is no perfect look for him. My own version that i’ve drawn feels a little too… soft for my liking. I don’t know how to visually communicate everything at once. You can only get the full picture by looking at every iteration.
in conclusion, character design is fucking hard. I have a great respect for anyone who has to make characters for a living.

*drags myself through the floor and slams this down*
I present to you
FULLMETAL BARTENDERS AVIAN AU
Divine Nugget Au
Tumblr media
(Rant as to why I chose the White-throated Needletail as Blurr's bird and some minor AU lore under the cut)
And that's not all! It comes with a FULL FLEDGED COMIC!!!!!
I spent a whole fucking week on this
I haven't done a comic in 4 years now, I can't believe this is my come-back XD. Though, on that note, know that I probably won't be pumping out any more comics - not any time soon, at least. But I do got more stuff planned for this au! If you ask about it, I'll 100% rant about it LOL
Tw// ⚠️mild gore in the 3rd panel⚠️
While exploring the woods with his team, Swerve had an unfortunate encounter with a crazed hunter. In an attempt to escape, he got injured, but it seems he wasn't the only one caught in the crossfire...
.
.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay
So when you look up what the fastest bird in the world is, Google with show the Peregrin Falcom
But there's a catch
The Peregrine is only fast when diving
When it dives to catch its prey, it can go up to 389km/h
Which yeah, pretty fast
But when casually flying, it only goes up to 120 iirc
The Needle Tail?
It can go up to 170km/h
Some have even recorded going over 300! (Close to the Falcon's dive, I believe)
Additionally, these birds only fly. Their habitat is literally listed as "the air," and some even believe they sleep while flying! They only ever land to brood and mate, and then they're off again. Their legs are so short that, if they ground, they can't fly again because it doesn't give enough room to flap their wings.
It fits Blurr perfectly!
It also has a blue-ish colour pattern I can work with lol (it's green, but it looks blue, lol)
Though, also, he isn't 100% like the Needle Tail, just based off of it. I still want avians to be sorta their own species and doesn't have to be exactly like their bird counterparts cuz they aren't them, they're their own thing.
That said, Blurr is one of the shortest from Avians population, still.
They're pretty big.
Another trivial detail of the design!
I was stuck between having his arms be his wings or have them be separate
Until I saw a drawing where they had both, and I realised, "Wait, why isn't that done more often! That's so cool!"
So that's sorta what I did
It's mainly to catch small prey when grounded and to stay better perched up on trees since they're much bigger and having extra fingers helps a lot. Or when they're climbing against a tree to pick up fruits, it gives them an extra boost and can better hang from it
But they're pretty much useless besides that lol
Just neat lil design choice
Other lore stuff. The time in which the au takes place is vaguely modern? But with fantasy aspects? I still haven't decided lol
Technology exists, but not in the way we have it sort of deal, idk, this au is pretty bare bones right now, so go wild with it XD I don't mind it, I love brainstorming it with people. I know this au isn't as big or complex as some others out there, but it's fun, and I hope yall like it too fjsjajaj

HEAR ME OUT.
sect leaders lan sizhui, ouyang zizhen, and jin ling calling lan jingyi as “furen” as a joke, until it escalated and now the rest of their sects— respectively, calls him; lan–furen, ouyang–furen, and jin–furen. all because none of the sect leaders attempt to deny the rumors if lan jingyi is really gonna marry one of them and become their madame, and because the three of them secretly preens at jingyi getting called their furen. they are three dumb lovesick fools who are deeply infatuated with their best friend.
despite jingyi’s flustered state at every address towards him, it reached to a point that he got used to it and fully embraced his title(s). the three saw this as a tacit approval and began openly courting and initiative towards him.
lsz: “jingyi, can you stay for a little while? would you really allow this husband of yours to be left alone after his incessant efforts of finishing his paperwork?” sizhui teases fondly, his voice too soft that jingyi assumed it was genuine. jingyi pulls his hand away with a flush.
after jin ling bought him 5 chicken wings, before jingyi could even protest.
ljy: “jin ling! i can’t finish all of this!” he fusses. “you’ve been spending so much stuff for me since earlier, what’s up with you anyway?”
jin ling only directs him an amused glint in his eyes before humming,
jinling: “i can’t let them think i‘m neglecting their beloved jin–furen.” he says before wrapping his arm around the other’s waist.
the lanling jin sect members— especially the younger disciples, absolutely adore jingyi. since jin ling‘s reign as sect leader, the lanling jin sect transformed for the better, and he broke the cycle of shitty sect leaders. the younger disciples are made of majority of members jin ling personally handpicked and invited into the sect, and they’re fond and grateful towards him. because of this, they are very comfortable and friendly, and jin ling allows them to be informal and friendlier towards him as long as it's just him and his sect. the other trio were present during this, and are quite popular amongst them, especially jingyi. they are very fond of jingyi since he has much more time to visit, since the other two are sect leaders. the disciples have an inkling about their sect leader’s attraction towards jingyi. who knows, they probably call him jin–furen to appease their leader and hopefully deliver the message to jingyi’s dense ass.
i cannot think of any scenario for zizhen, but i can imagine that zizhen would act more.. soft and affectionate towards jingyi. aaa

I forgot to add the cashier woman to the kahoot version. Whoops. Also Amogus guy fit so many of the categories I had to include him a bunch of times. He’s so silly but at the same I want to strange him with a coat hanger.
I also think the poor cropping makes it funnier.

parts of my music taste that i think the main npmd kids would like:
grace: i love her but she wouldn't fuck with any of my playlists. maybe bits of my pop stuff and the classical music playlist i use during homework or rushing for deadlines but even then she would probably ask me to remove the tango de roxanne instrumental from it. (kinda giving closeted madds buckley listener. i think i would play her a song and she would discreetly write down most of the lyrics to search it up later but then immediately go "oooh no, this is bad, this is very bad." when she's 7 songs deep into my love is sick)
richie: my boy would fuck with shwabadi and fabvl HEAVY. maybe more fabvl but yeah. would listen to their aot stuff and then go in a rabbit hole for more. maybe a bit of halacg and rustage?? definitely a random encounters guy at least. i just feel like he would be the type of guy to listen to nerdcore, whether it's rap or pure singing.
ruth: oh me and her are skipping in a field. musicals (heathers, in the heights, hadestown, epic)? check. gay and horny (chrissy chlapecka, snow wife, 6arely human)? check. dramatic ballads/songs where you have to be lip-SCREAMING or on your knees to be accurate to the emotions (y se fuera ella by jonghyun, tango de roxanne, heaven on their minds)? check.
steph: honey revenge for sure (girl would love airhead), florence and the machine, madds buckley, and hannah bahng. i don't listen to a lot of songs from sycamour but the few i do i feel like could rock with steph. maybe some of chase atlantic but probably their older stuff like their paradise ep and such. (projecting my love of falling onto her. a whole song about being tragically reckless with someone you like, basically saying fuck you to your dad, and calling the love conflict instead of just admitting what it is?? that sounds like steph)
pete: i dunno. i love him but like... taste in music is hard for me to get out of him. he'd probably be near my side where my brother's taste leaks over: more party edm but also nice rhythmic and indie stuff comes through. probably got dragged into richie's nerdcore stuff a bit. do feel like he would be the type of kid to take over their brother's music taste though so i guess it fits... hmmm.... old 90s to early 2000s hits would shoot out and surprise you if he's given the aux, in this universe of taste ig
max: he would claim to not like anything because im clearly a freaky nerdy prude and there's no way we could have anything in common (white girl pop/2010s recession pop. i feel it in my veins. bro would dig through my nostalgia playlist like a fiend. daddy issues is prominent in this man and the 2010s. also a closeted madds buckley listener. saved driver's seat but won't admit it)
