I look forward for when my ear infection is gone. And to continue developing a body and hair ritual out of love.
#i have had an ear infection since Saturday. it was diagnosed on Monday and I was given ear drops.#Plot twist: the ear drops could not reach the infection. so the infection worsened. I went to a walk in again on Wednesday to have this#revealed. there is so much pus in my ear that my ear drum cannot be visualized. So I got a sick note for the rest of the week (doctor was#pretty insistent that I should not take just one day off#but the rest of the week!#anyway I look forward to feeling better. i want to be sure I take care of my hair as it gets longer.#so I have my tried and true jack59 citrus curly hair shampoo and conditioner bar (conditioner can be left as a leave in)#then I alternate a hair mask once a week. one is hair strengthening. one is hair softening.#i also have my satya for psoriasis but once a month I have to use a clarifying shampoo because satya has beeswax and leads to build up#I have two other hair/scalp oils that I use as pre treatment until I can figure out the minimal amount of oil to be useful#also during showering I have a scalp brush to really get my shampoo in my scalp and a playlist explicitly for showering#there are other things I plan to get like a silk bonnet abd microfibre towel from curle shopp#and I may try the LOC method for my hair as it gets longer#I have slowly been adding other techniques for my hair too#and then for my body I made a vody e#a body exfoliant that's more like a body polish and looks like ground beef#and then of course soap and a body balm that has calendula and other stuff#not to mention some face care. Alas#my face does best with NOTHING but skin cancer does not give a shit about that thus I must clean my face after sunscreen#I look forward to having energy again to do proper self care things. such and paying attention to thinks and cleaning dishes and cooking too#my post

For your cruelty
I wish you to suffocate in your inhumanity. For your cruelty and coldness to drawn you in your sins. For your dreams to get crushed under my feet. For you to die by my resentment.
I can still recall the day I met you.
Leaves were dancing before death swayed by,
children were abandoned in the evil world.
I was so innocent and pure, so hopeful and bright like a star.
And I can still recall the day I ran away.
The town was wrapped in an ice shell,
gray clouds were towering over my cage.
I was so dead, all hopes and dreams demolished, eyes soulless.
Why did I love you, I still dare to ask myself?
Why was I so foolish to give my heart to a predator,
so heartless and blind, such a beast behind the masks?
The pain you gave to my existence never escaped me.
If I could, I would’ve warned myself,
I would have stabbed you first, killed the demon.
I would have never given you the time of my day,
nor bleeded your name on silk paper.
Memories of hallucinations haunt, clutch to me for dear life.
A history of pain and regret and a love towards the worst.
An young girl pleading for your pride,
begging on her knees, only to be faced with ferocity.
Your ruinous feet stepped on my heart, I let you,
then you turned your back on me, left me picking up blood.
You tore me apart, examined all I could give you,
it wasn’t enough, it’s never damn enough, thought “she should die here’’.
You had ruined me, you touched me.
I’ll drown you, get your blood on my teeth, take revenge.
I will rip out your heart, for mine got teared out of me.
And I will whisper, as I walk on your corpse,
“You should die here, you weren’t enough.’’
I am raging, gasping for air, trembling under your devilish stare. I remember, know how to use the knife the same way you did it. And I won’t miss my chance, I’ll break you off, dear calendula.

Holly's Sacrifice (Adventurers of Millenis Story)
Warnings: Death, sadness, sorrow, blood, etc.
"You poor child…" Calendula felt woozy after hearing someone's pleasant sing-song voice. She focused and noticed a kind-looking woman with long brown hair and hazel eyes. She didn't remember much after passing out, but she felt someone gently lift her into their arms. She felt warm, but cold and tired… She quickly fell asleep without dreaming.
This was the first time she had met her mentor, Hollyhock.
---------
"Calendula, you passed!" Hollyhock smiled as she swept her up into her arms and swung her about joyously. She laid her down and petted her head. "I'm so proud of you." Hollyhock cooed and tilted Calendula's head.
"Thank you, big sis, Holly." Calendula smiles as she hugs her mentor again. Hollyhock chuckles as she kneels and lays her hands against her shoulders.
"Let's get to your lessons then, shall we?" Holly smiles and pets her head. Calendula smiles and nods before they walk together.
Hollyhock was still so much taller than Calendula, but yet, they were so close.
------------
"Calendula, can you grab the antiseptic?" Holly shouted out to her little trainee. Calendula nods as she grabs the antiseptic. She returns and sits next to Holly, smiling. Holly begins to demonstrate how to care for a huge wound. She is slow, meticulous, and devoted to her task. Calendula looks in astonishment as Holly uses green magic to cure the wound.
"Wha-! Holly! You should not use magic; you will get sick again!" Calendula protests as her teacher grins and softly pats her head.
"Don't worry about me, Calendula; just focus on your magic cap… I'll be alright. "It's only a little magic," Holly reassures her and shows her what to do next.
"How do you know when to stop…?" Calendula asks, resting her head on the desk next to her. Holly hums while looking over.
"Well, I check my mana, but I also make sure I take care of my exhaustion," Holly explains as she looks over at Calendula. Calendula nods. "Don't worry, my dear, I'm fine."
-----------
Holly laughs as she walks back to the village with Calendula and Nolana and hears a chorus of loud screams. Her eyes widen as she runs toward the settlement. She covers her lips while coughing.
"The village- F-Fire?" Calendula inquires as she looks around in fear. Hollyhock tears her skirt as she creates a temporary mask.
"Calendula, you and Nolana, stay back, I'll get survivors," Hollyhock says as she stares at the two. Nolana's wings flutter, and Calendula's eyes enlarge.
"But Holly-!" Nolana complains, but Hollyhock raises a hand.
"I'll be fine, focus on helping Calendula take care of the injured." Hollyhock intervene before she enters the burning village. She rescues as many survivors as she can by herself and with the help of other villages. Calendula and Nolana were caring for the injured.
"Doctor-!" One of the peasants sobbed as she clutched Holly's legs. Holly kneels and glances at her.
"What happened?" Hollyhock inquired, but before the villagers could respond, a loud echoing, overlapping howl was heard. Hollyhock looks up, her eyes twinkling with a hint of magic. She was helping heal to the best of her ability.
"What is that?!" One of the villagers yells as Hollyhock gets up. It was a big shadow creature, resembling a wolf. It had smoke billowing from it, and Hollyhock felt fatigued as she got closer to it. She shook it off and stood up. When a large red light appeared in its jaws, she knew it possessed strong magical abilities. Hollyhock promptly responded to the attack with a green barrier to protect the people. She heard her feet scraping on the earth.
"Calendula!" Hollyhock immediately shouted. This made the younger woman's eyes snap up to look at her. "Get everyone out of here. I mean it. Don't look back, just go." Hollyhock looked over at her and Calendula's eyes widened.
"But Holly!" Calendula pleaded but Hollyhock shushed her promptly. She shifted her feet as she faced this fearsome opponent.
"Go." Holly placed another order. Calendula appeared conflicted, but Nolana pulled on her, and they both began to move. Holly took a big breath. "You know… I was hoping I could sing this to you in proper tradition but…" Holly walked nearer, looking up at the thing. Calendula froze when she witnessed her mentor face this massive creature with such conviction while also feeling the power of her powers.
"Hollyhock-" Calendula resumed, but Nolana and her began to remove the crowds. The magic around seemed to start a soft tune which made Calendula freeze. "No, Hollyhock, you can't! You can't use your true magic!" Calendula begins to cry out but Nolana pulls her away.
"Oh, listen well, beloved child, you've grown. Before you leave your mountain home, I'll sing a prayer for you..."
Hollyhock sings as she creates another shield to defend them against the creature's blows. She allows magic to surround her. Below her face, purple and green magic formed a sign. The beast lunges at her, but she weaves out of the way as music notes and butterflies surround her.
"When you lose your way... When you travel through the night~..."
Hollyhock moves her hands as purple chains emerge from the earth, attempting to force the creature to the ground. She was encircled by fire. Calendula sobbed as she struggled against Nolana and a skeleton's hold. Hollyhock was already exhausted from using so much power; she and Calendula both knew it would kill her.
"I will sing for rain... Praying for your light."
Hollyhock looks over at Calendula, who is just starting to sob louder as she is being taken away. Hollyhock concentrates on the creature, which is massive, taller than a building, and causes fires as it moves. She coughed into her fingers and saw her own blood on it; she couldn't give up. She needed to save everyone. She knew she was the only one capable of doing it.
"Farewell from the rain! Let it shelter you from harm."
Hollyhock sings as a storm gathers around her. She takes a deep breath and pushes her power to the edge. She concentrated hard on keeping it in place, the flames licking at her heels and the shield she had created. She could see it didn't want to injure anyone, deep down, but she couldn't stop it.
She was using all of her magic to bring it down, to dig her magic into the core so she could break the center, which was holding it together. She felt raindrops and knew her pushing was working; the rain will help heal the people as she focused all of her magic on both the healing rain and preventing it.
"May the farewell rain... Protect your heart!"
Hollyhock poured the last of her magic into this fight. She was pushing herself and felt her legs give out, but her attack eventually found its target, the core. She choked again as blood flowed from her mouth, and she felt her energy drain with the beast as she finally severed its center. She watched it come apart, then grabbed the necklace that was holding the creature together, pitying it. She rested her head on it and closed her eyes. She used the last of her magic to send out healing rain to help the villagers.
Until... It ran out.
-------
Calendula struggled to understand what she saw, her heart aching from the silence and blood coursing through her ears. She hurried towards Holly's location and then noticed her. She was on the ground, clutching the necklace that had formed that creature. She was gone, she knew it.
"Holly- Holly…" Calendula started when she pushed Hollyhock over. "Wake, wake up… This…isn't funny." Calendula's voice broke as she realized she was gone, but she couldn't accept it. "Holly-" Calendula's voice cracked as she sobbed against her side. "You can't do it; you have so much to teach me--this isn't fair. This isn't--please wake up, Holly! Holly!" Calendula began to sob and shake her when Nolana pulled her back and she sobbed.
"Calendula…" Nolana held her hands. Calendula cried nervously. "She's gone, Calendula." Nolana whispers before Calendula begins to sob harder. She hid her face in her chest while Nolana tenderly caressed her hair with her fingers.
It was so quiet as the rain fell...

When hair feels like straw Choice of right products are your draw
Winter can make your hair look like an electrocuted person. So don’t be in shock when you look at yourself in the mirror! The dry, straw-like, frizzy hair is simply a product of the cold winds depleting your hair of its moisture. You need to put the moisture back, take care with the right ingredients and cover your head whenever possible, to retain the natural, supple hair texture.
All celebrations lined up, But it’s a bad hair day...sorry month(s)! If you run your hand through your mane and feel you are in a stack of hay, know the culprit is the cold season. Don't be disheartened. For with the right product mix you can reclaim your hair to a silky bunch of cascading mane in almost no time. And maybe it won't even feel damaged to begin with! So, let's get to know the products up close and personal. And beat the cold winds straight on.
Where less is MORE! Sacred Lotus secret is much more. In a UCLA study conducted by plant physiologist Jane Shen-Miller, an ancient Lotus seed germinated after lying dormant for over 1,200 years.
So what is the miracle ingredient in there? After further analysis, the scientists discovered a protein repair enzyme called L- isoaspartyl methyltransferase (MT) in it. Damaged proteins did not accumulate within these ancient sacred lotus seeds, suggesting that MT enzyme, which was still present at normal levels, helped the ancient seeds defy aging for over 1000 years.
When dermatologists tested an extract of the Sacred Lotus seed in skin care formula, the protein repair enzyme, with a rich blend of antioxidants, it had an amazing anti-aging effect on the skin and hair. Thus germinated the idea of AGE-LESS. The crux being just like the 1288-year-old sacred lotus, anyone can rise from the mud, bloom out of darkness and radiate into the world. Though created in the USA, the Mitchell’s Age-Less range has been rediscovered and redesigned for the Indian skin.
Defy the cold with the armour of AGE-LESS Come to the world of AGE-LESS Hair Care and see your hair transform from rough to nourished. AGE-LESS Day Hair Tonic Shaft Vitalization provides follicle vitalization and protection from the sun and cold weather with SPF. Babasu, Wheatgerm, Argan, Coconut and Olive oil provides non-sticky nourishment. Keeps hair moisturised and smooth all day. Apply liberally on complete lengths of hair before grooming or styling hair and see those mane of yours turn tamed.
Tumblr media
AGE-LESS Night Hair Tonic Scalp Nourishment rejuvenates hair follicles and controls hair aging as you sleep. Calendula, Pea Sprout and Grape extract helps nourish, energize and reduce hair fall in aging hair. Apply liberally and massage on a clean scalp at night, to experience the change the following day.
Conventional hair conditioners only make hair strands visibly soft, less frizzy and manageable – but only temporarily. Outer visual effect just does not mean inner strength. Baobab and Pea Protein based Hair Masks take it a step further by working on dry and damaged hair with the help of proteins. Follow up with a shampoo also having Baobab and Pea Protein for better results.
Tumblr media
Experience the magic of AGE-LESS Pre-Shampoo Mask + Antioxidant Shampoo. Hair strands become smaller and have less pigment as we age. So the thick, coarse hair of a young adult eventually becomes thin, fine and light-colored. Then the onslaught of hair colour, pollution, poor lifestyle, etc. leads hair follicles to stop producing new hair and visible balding sets in. Our first-of-a-kind Anti-aging Hair Wash Regimen with Baobab and Pea Protein slows down hair loss, provides nourishment, maintains lipid balance and controls hair aging. Spread well on hair and scalp, leave on for 5 minutes and rinse off with water. Then apply the Antioxidant shampoo, massage well and wash off.
So, face the winters head on, literally! Equipped with a hair care regimen to battle all odds of the cold weather, here’s your time to let your hair down.

Finding the Perfect Products for Your Unique Skin
Navigating the vast world of the best skin care products Australia can feel like trekking through a dense jungle. Shelves overflow with serums, cleansers, creams, and masks, each promising the holy grail of glowing, flawless skin. But how do you navigate this sea of promises and pick the products that are truly right for you?
Fear not, intrepid explorer! This guide will equip you with the knowledge and tools to confidently conquer the skincare jungle and emerge with a routine tailor-made for your unique needs.
Demystifying Your Skin Type: The Essential First Step
Before diving headfirst into the product pool, understanding your skin type is crucial. Are you oily, dry, combination, or sensitive? Each type has its own needs and reacts differently to products. So, how do you identify your skin type?
Oily Skin: Shiny, prone to breakouts, large pores.
Dry Skin: Tight, flaky, rough texture.
Combination Skin: A mix of oily and dry areas, often T-zone being oily and cheeks being dry.
Sensitive Skin: Easily irritated, reacts to harsh ingredients or fragrances.
Once you know your skin type, you can choose buy best skin care products Australia formulated for its specific needs. Oily skin needs gentle cleansers and oil-free moisturisers, while dry skin craves hydration and richer creams. Combination skin requires a balanced approach, and sensitive skin necessitates ultra-gentle, fragrance-free formulas.
Beyond the Surface: Addressing Specific Concerns
Your skin type is just one piece of the puzzle. Understanding your individual concerns is equally important. Do you battle blemishes? Fine lines and wrinkles? Hyperpigmentation? Choosing products that target these specific concerns will elevate your routine from basic to brilliant.
Tumblr media
For acne-prone skin, look for ingredients like salicylic acid or niacinamide to combat breakouts. Antioxidants like Vitamin C and retinol can tackle fine lines and wrinkles while brightening ingredients address hyperpigmentation and uneven Australian skin tone. Remember, a multi-pronged approach is key!
Ingredient Decoding: Friend or Foe?
With seemingly endless ingredients listed on every product, deciphering their meaning can be overwhelming. Don't panic! Focus on key players for your skin type and concerns. Here are some examples:
Oily Skin: Hyaluronic acid for hydration without greasiness, niacinamide for oil control.
Dry Skin: Ceramides and glycerin for moisture retention, jojoba oil for nourishment.
Combination Skin: Squalane for balanced hydration, AHAs for gentle exfoliation.
Sensitive Skin: Aloe vera for calming, calendula for reducing redness.
Avoid harsh ingredients like alcohol or fragrances, especially if you have sensitive skin. Remember, you don't need a cocktail of ingredients! Focus on a few potent actives that work for you.
Patch Testing: The Safety Net
Before slathering a new product all over your face, patch test it first.Apply a small amount to your inner arm or jawline and wait 24-48 hours. If you experience any redness, itching, or irritation, steer clear. Patch testing minimises the risk of allergic reactions and helps you avoid skincare misadventures.
Listen to Your Skin: The Ultimate Guide
Your Australian skin is the ultimate feedback loop. Pay attention to how it reacts to different products. Does your face feel tight and dry after cleansing? Perhaps a gentler formula is needed. Does your breakout situation worsen after adding a new serum? Time to break up! Listen to your skin's whispers and adjust your routine accordingly.
Consistency is Key: The Long-Term Game
Skincare is a marathon, not a sprint. It takes time and consistency to see noticeable results. Don't be discouraged if you don't see overnight miracles. Stick to your routine, be patient, and enjoy the journey. Remember, small, consistent steps lead to big, beautiful skin victories.
Seek Professional Help: Your Skincare Allies
If you're struggling to figure out your skin type, address specific concerns, or build a routine, don't hesitate to seek professional help. Dermatologists and estheticians have the expertise to guide you on your skincare journey. Think of them as your trusty advisors in the skincare jungle!
Conclusion: Embracing Your Unique Glow
Remember, there's no one-size-fits-all approach to skincare. What works wonders for your friend might leave your skin singing the blues. Embrace your unique skin type, address your specific concerns, and choose the best skin care products Australia products that resonate with you. With patience, consistency, and a sprinkle of knowledge, you'll navigate the skincare jungle with confidence and emerge with a radiant glow that's all your own.

With the arrival of November, we go from the crisp air of fall to the comfort of indoor events. Now is a crucial moment to take special care of your skin. It's important to take care of your skin in a way that's tailored to your individual needs. So this month, we're discussing the best facials for your skin type. To ensure your skin stays radiant throughout November, let's discuss the best treatments for various skin types.
Customized Facials to Revitalize Your Skin:
Dry Skin: Embrace Hydration
Dry skin is a common side effect of November's chilly temperatures. A moisturizing facial is the best choice for dry skin. You should use moisturizing masks, moderate exfoliation, and hydrating serums. Hyaluronic acid, shea butter, and vitamin E help restore moisture and prevent dryness.
Oily Skin: Balance and Clarify
November month might be a hidden gift for people who suffer from oily skin. When temperatures drop, oil production tends to slow down. Nonetheless, equilibrium is still essential. The best facials are those that use oil-absorbing substances like salicylic acid or clay masks to exfoliate the skin and absorb excess oil. These methods can help clear up your pores, reduce excess oil, and leave your skin feeling clean and smooth.
Combination Skin: Targeted Treatment
Managing combination skin demands extra consideration. A face that is tailored to your oily and dry regions is essential in November. Treatments that include moisturizing chemicals, substances that balance oil production, and moderate exfoliation should be considered. When applied to specific parts of the face, multi-masking can be helpful in addressing a wide range of issues.
Skin Sensitivity: Calming and Mild
Alterations to the surrounding environment are a possibility in November. Choose facials that have anti-inflammatory components like chamomile, aloe vera, and calendula to help reduce redness and swelling. Use mild, fragrance-free products instead of harsh scrubs. A soothing facial can ease inflammation and redness, resulting in a more relaxed, even-toned appearance to the skin.
Normal Skin: Maintain Balance
If you're blessed with healthy skin, November is the perfect time to keep it that way. To maintain your skin's youthful glow, choose a facial that focuses on mild exfoliation, hydration, and antioxidant protection. Your complexion may stay radiant all season long with the help of treatments that contain vitamin-rich serums and gentle exfoliants.
Get a Facial in the Winter:
Protecting your skin from the elements is especially important as November arrives. It brings with it lower temperatures and shifting climatic circumstances. This month is particularly important for safeguarding and treating one's skin. In this article, we will discuss the importance of skin protection in November and the advantages of treating yourself to a facial in the winter.
Environmental stress protection:
The weather becomes more severe in November, with cooler temperatures and reduced humidity. Skin dryness, flakiness, and heightened sensitivity are all possible outcomes of these shifts. Even in the winter, it is important to protect yourself from the elements, especially the wind and the sun. Protecting your skin from these environmental aggressors requires a barrier to be applied, such as a thick moisturizer and sunscreen.
Maintaining Optimal Humidity:
November's dry air can disrupt the skin's delicate moisture balance. It can lead to dehydration, which in turn can cause pain, dullness, and even worsen pre existing skin issues. Hydrating your skin on a regular basis with moisturizers and hydrating masks helps restore lost moisture and maintains a healthy glow.
Managing the Skin Through the Seasons:
The change in seasons may have varying effects on people with different skin types. Both oily and dry skin types may see changes in their sebum production. A customized facial in the winter can help your skin adjust to seasonal shifts by feeding and balancing it.
Facilitating Blood Flow and Cell Regeneration
Gentle exfoliation procedures are used in winter facials because they increase circulation to the skin's surface. This boost in oxygen and nutrients to the skin cells results in a more radiant, young appearance. Dead skin cells can be removed through exfoliation. It allows the skin to absorb hydrating and nutrient-rich cosmetics better.
Reducing the Harmful Influence of Winter:
Problems such as windburn, redness, and chapping are not uncommon in November. Soothing, anti-inflammatory elements found in a customized facial can help ease these annoyances. Redness and irritation can be soothed with calming masks and treatments, leaving skin feeling soft and looking radiant.
Your skincare routine reaches a pivotal point in November to combat the effects of the changing seasons. By making prevention a top priority and treating yourself to a winter facial, you can protect your skin from environmental aggressors. While also gaining the benefits of a more hydrated, healthier, and more radiant appearance. Don't waste this November's chance to take care of your skin; do so, and you'll enter the colder months looking and feeling radiant. Take care of your skin so that it can serve as a radiant backdrop for all life's special events.

Flowers and Ash, Chapter 5
Book 1, Calendula Chronicles series.
Story synopsis: When the eldest daughter of Edward Ashford accompanies her father and brother on a last-minute trip in 1968 to secure their legacy, an act of spite turns into a boon for the family. When tragedy and scandal strike, the survivors will have to be clever if they are to live long enough to pick up the pieces of their lives. Pre-slash/Gen.
Chapter synopsis: After the funeral, Alexander and Marigold discuss what to do next.
CW for eventual violence, implied death of family member, isolation, dissociation, and violence
Tumblr media
Late 1968
Alexander had been understanding; almost too much, given how little she had been permitted out in public since her own accident. She fixed him with a sharp eye that would have withered him just a few short months earlier, but he stood firm. The last few months had left their mark. Aft et a moment, he sighed. “I’m not blind, Mari. Father wasn’t even in the ground, and he’s already campaigning to sweep up his shares. Do you have a plan, at all?
“Do you?” She wrinkled her nose at the blood pressure cuff strapped to her arm. “Are you planning to walk away from your work?”
Alexander sighed, took the reading, and nodded to her. His sister ripped the binding instrument from her arm with no small amount of satisfaction. The desk in front of her was littered with notebooks and papers, tracking her vitals since the summer, along with psychological assessments cobbled hastily together. Moving to the other side of their father’s study in the old English estate, he untied the medical mask and sat down. He looked evenly at his sister and considered the situation.
The loss had hit them both, both psychologically and physically. Both of them had clearly lost weight. Lack of sleep and stress had put faint lines into Alexander’s face that now greeted him in the mirror each morning. Marigold, however…aside from the weight loss, nearly glowed with good health. Still. Her eyes had lost pigment, and the smattering of freckles across the bridge of her nose had faded to almost nothing. The coppery cast of her hair was being slowly replaced with new growth that was positively flaxen. Even the faint scarring of everyday accidents- she had dubiously checked her arms for faded measles scarring, shocked to find the familiar marks just gone.
The three - no, two- of them had cautiously elected to keep her medical situation quiet, at least until she was out of harm’s reach by means of Dr. Marcus’ petulant ambition. After the funeral...there was something wrong in the way Marcus had seemed both completely isolated and totally confident in his position. How fully convinced that he was untouchable.
Spencer seemed almost willfully blind to all of this. It would even be more worrying had they simply been shut out. He was an uncle In all but blood, but he was also cleaning up in the wake of the death, isolating the useful contagion from the more profitable part of the whole venture.
Something about the situation twisted in her gut when she had thought to disclose her condition. They - her father included, Marigold had to allow - had gone in and cleared out a local population over an old temple and some flowers. From what she had managed to surmise, everyone else who had been exposed to the pathogen therein had died. Immediately. Brutally. While...she was becoming something else.
Right now, she was mostly isolated, but she had some control over it. The staff had been edgy around her for the first few weeks, although they seemed to relax easily in her presence unless something alarmed her greatly. She would have to work on that. She knew she’d have the opportunity to do so. Premature white hair, as. a symptom of trauma, was hardly unheard of.
But Marcus, a prime asset of Spencer’s, under isolation and set apart and outside from the world...no. Spencer, uncle or no, would be well-meaning enough, but Marcus had turned into a monstrous person under his guidance.
What would he do with her?
Alex sighed again. “I’m not planning to walk away, not from the work itself,” he admitted. “The marrow samples I took from you- yes, I told you it would hurt and you still said you wanted to be awake, and now we both know that you recover astonishingly fast- anyhow, I can culture those against tissue from others hit but the same virus. Figure out the missing links.”
“Meanwhile, you’re isolated, and Spencer was mobilizing a full coup at the bloody reception.” She drummed her fingers on the desk, looking out the window. Having control over the Europe lab means one of those people will sniff out what you have in no time..oh.” Her musings intersected neatly with her line of thought. She darted a look at Alexander with a humourless smirk. “No wonder Marcus is so damn paranoid. I doubt he’s done much of anything moved without Spencer’s say-so for a while now.”
Alexander’s eyes narrowed. “You did something. That’s the face you make when you've done something, and are waiting for the consequences to come storming up so you can kick them in the face.”
Marigold laughed and waved the accusation off. “I took a little risk at the funeral. Might have a payoff eventually other than spite.” She sobered. “So you need to be able to work in peace. Are you still chasing Veronica?”
Alexander blushed. “Given the memory and intelligence testing we’ve been running through? I’d be stupid not to. You realize I could probably train you with Father's notes. You’d be an asset in any lab. Wouldn’t even have to worry about infection risk.”
“No.” She hadn’t meant to raise her voice. People would figure out something was up, and the malaria story Alexander had spun up on the fly only held so long as people weren’t treating the alternative seriously or looking too closely at the situation.
Someone downstairs dropped something in the kitchen, and a cacophony of shouting reached them in the study. The siblings both froze, and waited for the confusion to subside. Alexander had posited that she had a pheromone effect, linked to her moods, on those surrounding her- the family was inured against the worst of it. There were so many things about all of this that could become problematic.
The healed scarring worried her. The ‘incident’, the mishap which had ejected her from London society and had led to her little trip with her family, had scarred her internally at the time. It had also effectively removed her from the marriage horse-trading of the European gentry. It had been among the worst thing that could have happened to a girl of her station, and Spencer in particular had made a point of alluding to her misfortunes when seeking to reshape her to the company’s uses. If her internal scarring was gone as well, things could change again for her. The possibilities of that outcome…she kept that locked and barred firmly behind a heavy door in her mind.
She had declined to broach the topic. Her father had guessed in a quiet moment just after they had returned home, whilst her brother was attending to her blood panels in the adjoining room. He had taken her hand, so tenderly, so hopeful at the renewed possibility for future grandchildren.
She had still been weak, then. They had agreed not to discuss it further until the lab was set up, and she was feeling ready to join them there. Her father had pressed a kiss to the back of her hand, eyes shining. “My darling girl. The things we’re going to do for the world.”
They would never have that chance.
She took a deep breath, forcing herself back into the moment. She lightly jabbed a finger at her brother. “If I thought you were about to request an ovary, I’d likely hunt down one of the dusty old swords from the great room and have a go at you.” Alexander blushed even deeper at that, but it cut the rising tension well enough.
“No labs. I-“ she faltered, then: “No one can know. You said yourself that Marcus wasn’t convinced with the story at all, and shut his mouth to save face. Your notes said subclinical pheromone impacts when exposed to the subject, yes? Generates a highly suggestible effect?”
Alexander glared at her. “I know I don’t leave my notes out.”
“You left the room to put away samples, and I wanted to know why the staff was still being kept back. As I said, I took a little risk. Told him he was clearly mistaken and to keep his idiot mouth shut. Did you know the idiot will drink anything he gets handed at a party without even looking at it?”
“I don’t know whether to laugh or scream at you…”
“Neither, but someone needed to cauterize that raw nerve and I could, so I did. I’ll be more careful from now. So you need space to work, but also privacy.”
Alexander glared, then allowed that this was the conversation she was determined to have. “That’s the shape of it. We both know what happened in that lab, but it doesn’t matter. Spencer wants you front and center making connections for the company…”
“And if Umbrella is thriving, he’s not pulling from the Foundation anymore. Don’t we have access to some remote locations? Through the estate?”
The new 6th Earl Ashford blinked, then smiled faintly back. “You know, that could work.”
“Good,” she smiled back. “And in the meantime, I think I need to build a little library of my own. Can you show me what I need to know to track what you’ve been tracking? I’m a quick study these days.”
The locked door of their situation would stay shut. They each had the tools necessary to rebuild the Ashford legacy if they were quiet and clever. It was only a matter of time.
And, oh, the things they could do in that time.
