sooo i have a headcanon (?) based on a merlin fic
knocking on heaven’s door by theroundbartable
great fic, definitely recommend
*spoilers ahead*

so basically merlin found out he’s the god of magic/life/creation and the other gods are basically his children but he doesn’t have the memories from before he chose to become human so his kids are like wtf come back.
he’s still immortal and i think arthur is still destined to return to him.
sOOOO i’m thinking that when arthur does finally return, he’ll maybe become a god too ? maybe merlin makes him one so he doesn’t have to lose him again ?
so my question is,,, what would arthur be the god of?
courage? nobility?
or would merlin be a little shit and make him the god of pratness or smthn stupid like that ?

One of the first prophecies in Albion was of Emrys and the Once and Future King. Every Seer in the realm had similar visions of the two powerful, glorious beings that would one day walk the earth. The prophecies remained prophecies for a few centuries before it began to grow into a fairytale story. Children were told stories of Emrys and the Once and Future King that would one day bring peace to Albion. Then it grew more and more as a story that people began to forget it was once a prophecy. When Uther began his Purge, he changed the story he himself had grown up hearing. He made Emrys out to be a creature of pure evil. If Emrys was magic incarnate, he couldn’t be anything other than evil. Children still heard of Emrys after the Purge, but he was a boogeyman, a villain that would snatch disobeying children from their homes and feast of them in the woods.
Arthur grew up hearing tales of the horrible, fearsome Emrys. Uther used Emrys as a tool to get Arthur to behave and be a perfect prince. Merlin heard of the fairytale version of Emrys from his mother. The Druids continued to worship Emrys as their deity but people thought them mad, he’s nothing more than a character in a story, but the Druids never forgot the prophecy. And with their Sight, their ability to recognize Emrys on sight, Uther lumped Druids in with the evilness he had slapped on Emrys’ name. He said the Druids performed sacrifices and rituals in Emrys’ name to try and conjure the demon to steal children’s souls.
Anyways, post-magic reveal Mordred calls Merlin Emrys and Arthur just freezes bc he Knows that Mordred is a Druid, and he Knows that Druids worship Emrys and would not take his name in vain or call someone else the name of their deity, and he was brought up hearing stories of Emrys being a demon, pure evil. So he just kinda. Looks. At Merlin who just grumbles about being called that but responds as if it’s normal and Arthur is a bit terrified. He’s like “You’re Emrys?” To Merlin who shrugs and is like “I guess” (unaware of the horrifying stories Uther spun of Emrys, only knowing what his mother and Kilgharrah said and how the Druids worship him).
The other knights have heard of the Demon Emrys except Percival who grew up in Druid camps but doesn’t have their Sight so he didn’t know Merlin was Emrys until right now. Gwaine laughing a little uncomfortably to break the tension and is like “So…taste any good children lately?” Arthur slaps him up back the head. Merlin just looks disgusted and confused. Mordred and Percival are offended on his behalf. Lancelot is amused by it all and sits back to watch the chaos. Leon and Elyan are shaking their heads at Gwaine’s stupidity. Why the hell would he say something like that to a DEMON????

you're telling me bbc merlin has an episode called The Secret Sharer where everything revolves around a bunch of characters digging around for merlin's secret identity and gwaine is there for no reason other than to beg merlin to trust him again and proves himself worthy of that trust by turning his back on his knightly duties and doing everything to help merlin even though they might be saving a traitor for all gwaine knows and then merlin literally does magic in front of him and they even kinda acknowledge it by shrugging at each other and this still doesn't count as a magic reveal and they all just go back to their stupid little ignorant lives in camelot after that. do i have that right? ok. so first of all this show is a cheap farce but we knew that. second of all. Gwaine Knows. obviously

I wonder if the people of Camelot realise that almost all of the knights of the round table are more loyal to the king’s servant than the king himself

You know I see plenty of fics of Arthur and the Knights being impressed by all the insane amount of power that Merlin has, but I think we need to go to the other end of the spectrum.
We need fics of Arthur not being impressed by sorcerers cause Merlin just sets the standard so high.
Like someone throws a fireball? Big whoop, Merlin brings lightning from the heavens.
Some witch is controlling a magical beast? Congrats but Merlin can literally create life from nothing.
None of the Knights have any gauge for how hard magic is because Merlin is just built different. They have no context for how insane the stuff their friend pulls off is and just think that’s normal.
Bonus points if they think that Merlin isn’t even really all the good at magic, just capable of simple tricks.

me to me: girl, don't do it.
me: *imagines an au where the show didn't practically forget about merlin and gwaine's friendship after series 3, and gwaine found out about his magic sometime in series 4, and merlin got to have a friend again who knew everything about him and who he could be his true self with and tell everything to and share sneaky, knowing looks with when he secretly performed magic and—*
me to me: well, now you've done it. enjoy the pain.

I’m fine! I’m totally fine. I just don’t think Merlin and Gwaine were being very heterosexual with each other is all.

I'm sorry but...
Maybe it was too late for there to be even a soul outside, or too early for any activity. It is one of those rare occasions when the more scrawny of the two men allows himself to be dragged into the tavern by the other, and of course they would take advantage of it until the drink dissolved between hours.
They swung between the set of limbs they shared in an attempt not to fall, and the cold had only inclined them to be as close as possible. A single body heat, a single elusive laugh between the streets
When they reached their destination, they couldn't even climb a couple of steps and instead of getting frustrated in the haze of alcohol, they laughed until they fell to the ground.
The shorter one, more accustomed to the sensation, of course dedicated himself to admiring the glow that the moon gave to the other's pale skin because what else do you do when you finally have close the focus of your arrhythmic palpitations. He couldn't help it -he didn't want to- he finally said what he had been feeling...
«but why» The other asked «what do I have?»
«The same could be asked by the wandering drunk »
«At least you still have your heart, I couldn't offer the same»
And isn't that the most boring way to get rejected? When all you get is something you already know

Still thinking about the ending of Merlin (as one does several hours after the first watch, post-two crime documentaries as a futile attempt at forgetting the ending) and I just keep coming back to thinking about how everyone except for Merlin won the war.
Like yeah people still died and it's still incredibly sad, but Gwen got to build a better Camelot in memory of her hubby, the knights supported her and each other and built a better Camelot too, Gaius probably got to come out as a sorcerer and practice healing magic to save people he couldn't have before, the citizens got to be safe and happy and prosperous, and everyone got to live out their natural lives and die with peace and dignity.
Except for Merlin.
Merlin, doomed to immortality.
Merlin, who had to watch his friends and family die while nature refuses to claim him.
Merlin, who becomes the last of his kin once Kilgarah and Aithusa die.
Merlin, who was left alone for several centuries.
Merlin, who saw magic slowly peter out of existence when the fight against sorcery rose again.
Merlin, who lived through things like the inquisition and witch trials and persecution galore.
Merlin, who had to watch his life and (more importantly) the lives of his dearest friends become nothing more than legend.
Merlin, who hears the legend of him and his friends everywhere he goes and can't escape the reopening of old wounds.
Merlin, who must carry on alone and hope for the return of a man whose face he may not be able to picture anymore as the years grow longer and longer.
Merlin, who has already suffered so much for Arthur, having to suffer more while he waits for his return.
Merlin, who will never love anyone other than Arthur, yet Arthur had to go and fucking die in his arms and leave him alone for a millennia or two.
Maybe Mordred and Morgana and their allies lost the war, Gwen lost her husband, the knights lost a friend, and Camelot lost its king, but no one lost more than Merlin did.
Merlin is the last of his kind who lives in a world that has moved on, waiting for a destiny that seems like it may never happen. I now emphatically understand why he's mentioned in The Wastelands (book 3 of the Dark Tower series by Stephen King) because he is such a perfect foil for Roland.
I think Roland has it a lot easier than Merlin does, though.

Even the most loyal of Arthur's people defending Merlin in a magic reveal scenario, not for Merlin's sake but Arthur's is so important to me

somehow some time magic goes wrong and young arthurs from different points in time are pulled into king arthur era. everyone kinda has this back and forth of who is going to watch the literal 8 month old. gwen and lancelot are pretty good at taking care of him, so is percival but he doesnt seem comfortable with it so no one forces him. elyan tried to hold him but baby!arthur started wailing after three seconds. leon is sorta good but he has like no idea how babies work or what they need so when baby!arthur found his sword and almost lobbed his own head off, leon was forbidden from taking care of the child. gaius is too old and busy researching how to reverse the issue. who the HELL would trust gwaine with a child? arthur has this Odd aversion to the child but no one pushes him on it. ofc merlin, magic incarnate, has this like aura or energy that draws all these innocent woodland creatures to him so obviously little arthur is also drawn to him. in fact, merlin seems to be the person he likes the most. and merlins a natural w kids apparently so hes often the one that baby!arthur is handed off to.
he complains about it at first but when baby!arthur breaks into a fit of giggles after merlin calls adult!arthur a clotpole, he has merlin wrapped around his little finger. merlin stops complaining but does let arthur know that the one thing he Will Not Do is change his diaper. arthur laughs and walks away. merlin talks to baby!arthur like they’ve been friends for years (bc they have). arthur points out that baby!arthur cant understand him and merlin retorts that its like how it normally is. merlin gets to perform magic in front of baby!arthur and he LOVES it
my point to this was merlin dotting on little versions of arthur is a way that no one ever really did for him growing up and adult!arthur seeing it and healing little pieces of his inner child as he watches merlin play games with baby!arthur and make sure he’s taken care of. it especially hits him when gaius finally finds a way to send baby!arthur back and while everyone seems torn between upset they have to say bye, they’re also relieved to get the baby back where hes supposed to be,, merlin is like choking back fat tears. everyone backs off to give them privacy and merlin just kisses baby!arthur’s forehead and whispers some encouraging and heartachingly sincere words that have adult!arthur choking back tears.
then BOOM the spell also backfires and while yes baby!arthur got back to where hes supposed to be, now theres toddler!arthur. he has this gravitational pull to gaius (can recognize him) and merlin (magic soulmates ofc he has an innate trust in the man). merlin is happy to have his little friend back and gaius goes back to the drawing board. now they have this little 2-3 year old toddling after them and blabbering something that sounds like english if you’re patient enough
(merlin makes another comment about how little arthur has changed over the years)
the cycle repeats, merlin and toddler!arthur get attached and adult!arthur watches and heals a bit more of his inner child. gaius finds another cure that falls through the same way and now they have child!arthur. he has a bit more of uther’s influence in him but hes still a child. he gets hurt and tries to fight back tears but merlin sees he’s in pain and tells him it’s okay to be hurt, to feel pain, to cry. child!arthur says in that stutter cry children do when they’re fighting back tears that his father says boys shouldn’t cry. merlin wipes a tear that slips down child!arthur’s face and whispers about how he cries and lets himself feel his sadness before picking himself back up and dusting himself off before getting back to it, that it doesn’t make him weak but stronger. adult!arthur hears this and this may not be the beginning of his deconstruction but it makes a tremendous amount of progress in him rewiring his brain away from his father’s toxic ways of thinking.
idk if they’d get a teen!arthur since gaius probably would’ve learned his lesson by then but if they did, we’d get to watch Merlin vs Arthur Showdown 2.0 as merlin humbles the young prince and i think that’d be funny. especially for gwaine since he didn’t get to see it happen the first time.
