I feel like as a fandom we don't talk enough about the Fisher King. No, I don't mean the actual episode - that is an entire other post in itself. I mean the actual Fisher King.
How Merlin meets an ancient being that was well cared for and loved, who has lived for centuries to the point that his actual name has been forgotten and all that is left of him is a desolate land and crumbling castle.
And that the King that Merlin meets doesn't ask for greeting or hospitality, but instead death.
Isn't it such a coincidence that a powerful person has stayed waiting for the time of the Once and Future King? Left, forgotten, aged, exhausted and begging for an end?
The Fisher King isn't a foreshadowing for Arthur's failed destiny, but Merlin's eternal doom.
The Fisher King is Merlin's later parallel.

So you know in the episode of Merlin when they go to the perilous lands. What if Arthur did look into what the bridge keeper was saying to him? Problem he’s taking it the wrong way.
The bridge keeper does his spiel and mentions both strength and magic and later Merlin and Gwaine both show up. Arthur does not thing Gwaine is strong. Swift, a good fighter, sure but not as strong as Merlin who is so very resilient to everything thrown his way. Not Merlin who walks into every problem head on. Sure Merlin’s scared about it but the Bridgekeeper didn’t say Fearless he said Strong.
When they leave Gwaine behind at the border Arthur becomes very suspicious of Gwaine. Maybe this is why Gwaine didn’t like Arthur. Because Camelot is persecuting his kind.
When they meet Gwaine again and start fighting Arthur’s goading him trying to get Gwaine to respond with Magic so Arthur can see if he’s right and then the fire starts. Arthur know now. Fires don’t just start like that. It must have been Gwaines magic.
After they escape Arthur keeps a wide berth of Gwaine not wanting another fire to happen. But then everyone is reunited. And Arthur knows these are his knights. He doesn’t want a knight with magic but Gwaine has saved his life many times.
So Arthur knights him but promises to keep an eye on him.
He notices that Gwaine disappears right before the immortal army is defeated and then shows up once more after they’re gone. Arthur knows Gwaine is loyal.
He notices how cocky Gwaine is facing his opponents and thinks it must be the power that lurks below.
He notices that when they fight the wyverns before closing the veil that he hears a low chanting from the group and after that Gwaines says “See, that’s how you deal with them” with a smile which can only mean one thing.
He notices when the get to the veil that Gwaine is the first person to challenge the Cailleach no doubt thinking his magic greater than hers.
He notices when he finds Merlin in the bog after all hope was lost it was Gwaine that was with him likely using his magic to find Merlin.
Gwaine is the one to find the “key” to Arthur’s bane in the caverns.
So after all this when Merlin confesses his magic to Arthur, his first thought is not “Merlin has betrayed me because he has Magic”, his first thought is, “God help me, the two most chaotic idiots in the entire five kingdoms are the ones who have the power to destroy everything.”
It was hard enough making sure Gwaine didn’t set anything fire. Now he has to deal with two of them.

sooo i have a headcanon (?) based on a merlin fic
knocking on heaven’s door by theroundbartable
great fic, definitely recommend
*spoilers ahead*

so basically merlin found out he’s the god of magic/life/creation and the other gods are basically his children but he doesn’t have the memories from before he chose to become human so his kids are like wtf come back.
he’s still immortal and i think arthur is still destined to return to him.
sOOOO i’m thinking that when arthur does finally return, he’ll maybe become a god too ? maybe merlin makes him one so he doesn’t have to lose him again ?
so my question is,,, what would arthur be the god of?
courage? nobility?
or would merlin be a little shit and make him the god of pratness or smthn stupid like that ?

thinking about emrys, god of life, death, and magic, who saw the atrocities being committed against his people and traveled to the realm of humans to be born to mortal parents and live in the flesh to rescue his people and find what it means to be human. thinking of emrys, now merlin, feeling joy, feeling sorrow, feeling pain, feeling love and marrying arthur to rule camelot together and unite albion. thinking about merlin reclaiming his throne in the realm of the gods and raising arthur’s soul to rule alongside him above as he ruled alongside arthur below. merlin and arthur raising their court to their realm and continuing on their journey now gods rather than mortals

I can see that you go through life athwart it. You see the flow of events, you are able to tell how you could most easily fit yourself into it. But you dare to oppose it. And why? Simply because you look at it and say, ‘this fate does not suit me. I will not allow it to befall me.’
I have always admired people who can do that. So few do. Many, of course, will rant and rave against the garment fate has woven for them, but they pick it up and don it all the same, and most wear it to the end of their days. You… you would rather go naked into the storm.

*Gwaine, Arthur, and Merlin, in mortal peril as usual*
Arthur: Shut up, Merlin, I need to think of a plan to get us out of here.
Merlin: I didn’t say anything you clotpole!
Arthur: You were thinking about it!
Gwaine *trying to break the tension by activating his slutty confidence*: Okay boys, tits up. We’re gonna be the reason the devil is fucking nervous today. 😉
Arthur:
Merlin:
