why is it so common in fics to make gwen or elyan say “my father died because of magic” as a reaction to a magic reveal? it’s like so nonsensical and clearly a made-up reason for them to hate magic. i’m not saying it’s inherently ooc for them to have some ingrained prejudices towards it - that’s understandable if you consider they literally grew up in camelot… but it’s weird mental gymnastics to make their father’s execution a reason for them to hate magic more instead of uther’s laws? gwen and elyan would have known their father was a good man until the end, especially gwen, it makes no sense that they would blame magic for ‘corrupting’ him when they knew it hadn’t done any such thing. i think more than anything else their father’s execution would open their eyes to how paranoid uther is and how unnecessarily, over-the-top cruel his laws are… i could mayyyyybe be convinced that this event made them hate magic more because they conflate magic as a whole with the sorcerer that was responsible for involving their father in it… but it’s a stretch to be honest. canonically their views on magic are some of the most lenient out of anyone’s in the show. gwen showed zero hesitation or internal conflict breaking the laws to help save a druid and she canonically reacted to merlin’s magic in a way that can only be described as wholeheartedly accepting and actively welcoming. and regarding elyan, we have seen him be immediately empathetic to a druid boy, and we know he has travelled to many places, so it’s likely that he came across people and places that harboured less radical attitudes towards magic. again i think some ingrained bias makes sense but i think those preconceptions are not as strong as their conviction that their father was a good person until the end, and their conviction that merlin is a good person - gwen especially knows this. she has literally been shown aiding merlin in statue theft without asking any questions because she trusted him That much, and this was only in season 1, when their friendship was still new. he’s her best friend, call me crazy but i know for certain if she saw merlin do magic she would simply conclude that, if merlin did it, sorcery could not be so bad after all. finding out about his magic would not change her opinion on him, but rather on magic. i really think it’s weird that they are so commonly written as the characters who would have the most difficulty accepting merlin specifically because of their father’s execution. that’s a shit reason and also simply out of character for them. btw i’m talking specifically about the instances of either gwen or elyan reacting in a judgemental way in fics. id understand it if it were just a reason for them to be more worried about losing him to execution but this is often not the case in those fics. and i have to wonder why people try to paint them like this so often

This is possibly a hot take in the merwaine community but personally, I do not think Gwaine knew about Merlin's magic until maybe the last episode.

I know Gwaine is an objectively very observant character (Although for some reason AO3 disagrees with that take, not having an observant Gwaine tag and all) and Merlin truly does not know how to hide his magic in the slightest, if you know what to look for, which I do believe Gwaine would. I see why people believe it, I truly do. But I do not think Gwaine as a character would have kept his mouth shut about it.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think he would tell anyone but Merlin himself, but with just how badly we see Merlin fall down a route of fear and depression in later seasons, I do not think Gwaine could have sat idly by when he knew he could help.

Like we see him in the secret sharer episode go to Merlin, challenge him, be a nuisance in the best sort of way to offer support and aid him in not just finding Gaius but bringing him back. I can't believe that, even in season 5 when he is a shell of his former self, he could have watched all that was happening and been like 'welp, I still got to keep this secret, for Merlin's sake'. No! He would be busting down Merlin's door and shaking him while screaming 'Your magic doesn't make you a bad person, nor does it make you have to bend to Arthur's every whim, now come on we are going to set some shit right' because to me that is the kind of character he is. (((Ok he would probably do it in a much subtler way but you get what I'm saying, he would offer support in the use of Merlin's magic)))

Now, this part is a bit nuanced, but the only way I see Gwaine knowing about Merlin's magic and not telling him, was if he was thinking Merlin knew that he knew. Like he was convinced it was just this unspoken thing that hung above their heads and he didn't want to speak it into reality in fear of Merlin being hunted down and killed by his own mistake. So he just keeps winking in Merlin's direction while Merlin simply doesn't catch on in the slightest but kind of nods anyway, adding to Gwaine's idea that Merlin certainly knows that he knows.

Or, the other option is that it's early season 4, Lancelot is still alive, and Merlin is still a truly happy character. And Gwaine is like, 'well, if it's going well then I shouldn't upset the balance' (Which is kind of the direction I am taking in one of my fics). But after Lancelot's death, I simply think it's not possible that he knew and didn't say anything.
