I remember reading this one Mercelot fanfic where Merlin is in love with Arthur and Lancelot is in love with Gwen so they both decide to be friends with benefits but then they fall in love with each other and the worst part is that it is CANON COMPLIANT so Lancelot died in the end and I've read the fic twice and I remember sobbing so hard into my pillow. It was written so beautifully and it hurt me so much but that was years ago and I couldn't find that fic now 😭😭😭

I just remember the ending was like Merlin crying in a room and then Arthur comforted him by saying something like "he loves you" because they never really established their feelings outside the agreement (and I remember this because it BROKE me). It's kind of long? Maybe about 30-40k words but I don't know for sure. I tried to search in ao3 but can't find it 😭

Imagine being Lancelot, like-

You come to Camelot, trying to become a knight, only to meet a giant ass hypogriff on your way. You save this scrawny servant's life, and not only does the boy know the prince, he immediately commits identity fraud for you, then reveals himself a sorcerer, and everytime you see him again after you were banished, his poweres grow increasingly unhinged.

That one time he suddenly has a sword that can kill the immortals that just attacked, another time he has a dragon pet. Sometimes he talks to lake spirits or is treated by druids like a mix of a god and an eldritch horror.

It only gets worse. He's amazing, he's terrifying, you're compelled to protect him. You have no choice but to die for him.

arthur notices merlin and lancelot’s chemistry in s1 and then merlin and gwaine’s chemistry in s3 and comes to the conclusion that merlin likes men with long hair. in completely unrelated news, arthur thinks he might look good with long hair and decides to grow it out

The envy Arthur and Lancelot would have had for each other must have been insane.

Because Merlin is secretive with Lancelot. He tells him things he would never tell Arthur, he opens up to him and Arthur knows he can never have that trust. Never have that closeness not while he’s king and Merlin a servant.

But to Lancelot he’s been secretive about protecting Arthur. It all resolves around Arthur, opening up about protecting Arthur, giggling over using magic to please Arthur. Lancelot knows it will never be him on the other side of the devotion not like this.

just like he will never be Gwen’s because she loved him once yes but at the end of the day it’s Arthur she chooses.

and in Arthur’s eyes Lancelot is Gwen’s first love will always be known as such and will always be looked at as such even if she loves him she loved Lancelot first and Arthur can’t help but think if she could have him she would.

Anyway I’m so sane about them and at the end of the day how they still understand why it’s like this because they would choose the other as well.
