I think my favorite bit of background info from the Black Sails showrunners is the fact that Anne and Max’s relationship and Anne’s entire season 2 arc were actually not originally planned. They just, like, took one look at the character they wrote, thought “woops, this one came out gayer than expected”, and changed the story accordingly. I feel like a lot of writers would do well to follow that example tbh

the idea that for max the horror was outside the house and for silver the horror was inside the house is making me hm normal and fine. one tries to escape the horror by forcing her way into the house (into its ‘peace’ which she knows depends upon the horror outside of it) and for the other the house itself is the horror? being trapped in it (with who?) is the horror and so he runs from it escapes it but it turns out the outside is no better. and so there’s nowhere that’s safe there’s nowhere that’s peaceful the world is a place where the horror never ends 👍 there’s a lot of reasons i think this way about silver’s past (eg how well it meshes with what little we know about his aversion to being taken care of, his desire to flee all sense of belonging, how little he’s able to trust people, etc.) but the idea of his life being more or less like this also makes me crazy because of how Long John Silver officially takes on nassau as “his home” and “his island.” silver tells flint “you and i have willed our men through unthinkable things to get this far. why not one more. to call nassau home again.” later he tells flint “there is nothing in nassau but horror.” im connecting invisible unspoken dots and so on. it sucks here

series 3:

once again, when Max and Anne kissed, dad remarked "there are so many lesbians in this show." when I reminded him that it's just the same lesbians as last series, he said "isn't there also that other woman who slept with the french lady?" to which I said "oh you mean Eleanor? yes she also had a relationship with Max," and thought it was settled

he also said "do you think the costume designers gave [Anne] a hat just so that people can tell her apart from the other brunette women?" Ignoring the fact that 1) Anne has red hair. 2) there are no prominent brunette female characters. and 3) Anne is also the only woman who wears trousers and is incredibly distinctive in every way. I thought nothing of it

but then during Max and Jack's conversation about Anne in 3x02 like "we both love her," dad thought they were talking about Eleanor. his only question about this was how they already knew she was coming back to Nassau. when I asked why he didn’t doubt that Max and Jack were both in love with Eleanor, he said he was surprised about Jack but "isn't [Eleanor] also one of the lesbians?"

it soon transpired that not only did dad think that Anne With A Hat and Anne With No Hat were two different people, but also that Anne With No Hat was actually Eleanor

so he thought that Max had been two-timing Anne and Eleanor for all of series 2

needless to say, he was very confused by the Eleanor-lookalike prostitute in 3x08

he completely forgot that Flint was gay. I preemptively paused to remind him who Thomas Hamilton was when Rogers used his name and dad was like "the blond english guy? oooh right they did kiss at one point, didn't they?"

it seems dad has overcorrected and started assuming that any character is gay. he asked me if Jack was in love with Vane. slay

I've just started (re)watching black sails with my dad. my dad who "didn't pick up on any gay breadcrumbs" in our flag means death until the moment stede and ed kissed. this will be interesting

john silver really sat there in the flickering lantern light, surrounded by the press of dark forest, and listened to flint tell him about england defiling his love with another man, about how the purest distillation of flint is through the lens of his love for thomas and then insinuated himself into that story by explicitly making himself a direct parallel to thomas, whom he knows flint loved, and after all that it still never occurred to him “hey maybe I’m in love with flint” like he really sat down and flint was like “yeah here’s my baggage about the gay love of my life” and silver was like, “oh no that’s me” without a SHRED of self awareness like SIR are you KIDDING ME
