The Joker’s Pronouns

I’ve noticed that the Joker has never referred to himself as a he in comics and, this is not recent so people can’t blame it on current events. Joker has always done this. He mostly refers to himself as a “girl”. The closest he has gotten to calling himself he is when he refers to himself as the Clown Prince. None of the hero’s, villains or regular citizens call Joker she/her. They always refer to Joker as he/him. Joker never protests or gets upset by it. I think Catwoman has referred to Joker a few times as She/Her but, that’s when they were friends. Harley and Punchline have never referred to Joker as She/Her. I was told by a Redditer that the DCU states Joker as being Non-binary but, I don’t want to state that as a fact since I can’t actually find it anywhere. (I’m not saying they lied or were wrong it’s just that people demand proof and, then when you give it to them they get mad. I’d hate to see what they do if you don’t have proof.) So am I saying the Joker is transgender? No I don’t think so. He’s definitely more effeminate than some men but, he’s way too comfortable in his own skin to be suffering from gender dysmorphia. Is he Non- binary? Maybe? I honestly don’t think he gives it much thought. I think he just does what he wants. I just find it odd with current events and current comics of cringey mpreg that no one has talked about how he refers to himself as She/Her. I don’t think the other villains refer to Joker as he/him because, they are transphobic. I think Joker just never bother correcting them. Maybe he feels like only he can call himself she/her and others aren’t allowed? DC has never really explained it but, they’ve done it for decades. He’s also described himself as Not a basic Bitch to Harley, while once giving Batman information about Two-Face, Batman showed disbelief and Joker told him, Never doubt a woman’s intuition. When Batman cuffs Joker to take him back to Arkham, Joker often replies, I’m not that kind of girl Bat’s” it happens far too often for Joker to be using She/Her in a Joking manner. Maybe it’s because, of his childhood. When Guzzo kidnapped and assaulted “Sonny” (aka child Joker) Guzzo seemed the type to refer to Sonny as a “girl”and, other derogatory names normally reserved for women in order to emasculate him. Maybe it’s Jokers way of taking back the power Guzzo had over him or, maybe he just became accustomed to referring to himself that way since it was quite literally beaten into him since childhood. The oddest part about this whole thing is, Why has no one ever talked about it? Why hasn’t anyone ever pointed it out? I guess even DC staff is too afraid to question the Joker.

Hot take all of her bad behavior is just from being an unchecked child and she'll grow out of most of it. I actually don't like the concept elf bullies Harrison bc she has a crush on him- (don't get me wrong this is 0 Nerrison hate I just don't like when they start from that.) I think she's actually jealous? Threatened of him maybe? Hear me out, before David had all their names remembered he was pulling a Cameron and grouping some together. Specifically only Nerris and Harrison. Nerris reacted childishly like children do and didn't take kindly to that and saw Harrison as immediate competition. (They even argue at one point about who's the most magical.) So that's why she targets him and treats him like a loser to keep him down and make herself feel higher.

It gives me the same vibe kids competing with each other academically rather than in sports bc once something is labeled as a team Nerris actually seems to do okay in it. So I think this is a behavior she learned way more in school, and why I HC her to be one of those honor student types who likes being recognized as the teacher's favorite.

I don't believe Nerris is even that deeply aware of the whys and how's of why they act like this. They just do things, man. Then do silly little flossing dances after.

They probably played movie star planet and all the other child website roleplaying games and started fantasy roleplaying groups on there which was probably difficult with all the family roleplays and wolf clans being a way more popular choice to pretend as. Elf needed something to do in the winter when it got too cold to larp outside !!!! They probably switch over to more writing based forms of roleplay as they got older.

In the show we actually see her playing a game called "Pixies and Pythons" or something instead of DND and there's like hot pixie women on the cover and I'm choosing to believe she DIDN'T bring that from home camp campbell just has offbrand EVERYTHING.

Both of her parents sew and they make all of their costumes for her and I like to think Nerris is very "navy blue starry wizard" aesthetic so they mostly stick to that. Her mom's supportive and will add anything she wants to it but her dad gets excited with hisown ideas and opinions too.

I think Nerris' gender exspression being neutral might've got them certain comments in school and why she specifically decided to make her character's title "Nerris the cute" and why often the first thing she aims against Harrison is his looks. (That, or, the "Nerris the cute" is a title her dad came up with for her before she could. Yes I'm saying this man brought the baby to larp in a carrier.)

Has a whooole collection of dice and she gives some to her friends when they come over but has to specifically pick out the ones she DOESN'T want anymore first.

Gareth Emerson Headcanons pt 2: Electric Boogaloo

These are once again written with the mindset of Gareth being 18+, not that there's any NSFW ones this time. With that being said, please if you are a minor, keep scrolling. I'm also sorry for the title but I couldn't not include that.

There’s a good chance he’d have an alternative partner. He’s very intensely into the things he likes, so I can’t see him being interested in people who don’t have similar interests. Which is why I think his partner’s style would be alternative. Specifically, punk, if I can toss my two cents in. Regardless of gender or lack of gender, they’d have that big dyed and teased hair, a safety pin through their ear, maybe some facial piercings, the whole nine yards. They’d both love plaid. You can’t tell me he wouldn’t go feral seeing them in a mosh pit at a concert. He’d think it’s one of the hottest things he’s seen them do. He’d be amazed by your ability to walk in platform boots without breaking or spraining an ankle. And maybe a little turned on by it. I could also see him being with someone who isn’t all-out alternative. I don’t think the look has to be there for him. As long as you have similar morals and interests, he’d be down.

In a similar field, I don’t think he’s straight. He doesn’t have a label for his sexuality. Pretty men, handsome women and adorable non-binaries are all good with him. There’s a good chance that Eddie could have been his sexual awakening for men. Still, there’s also a good chance that it could be someone from Mötley Crüe, Lemmy Kilmister, K.K. Downing, or another band member in a band he likes. He thought he admired them for their music - until he had a wet dream or fantasy about them. He didn’t tell people about it right away; he’d know Hawkins isn’t the safest place to be out. When he feels comfortable telling people, he’d tell hellfire at a DND session. Everybody would accept him, even if they did not understand it. He’d tell his mom and siblings last (in case they don’t accept him), who automatically give him hugs and assure him that this doesn’t change their opinion of him in the slightest.

He’s a Scorpio. I know, I know, we don’t know his birthday. But it just makes sense. He’s got the resting bitch face down, he’s got the aggression that’s kinda really hot, and he has this passion to him that you tend to see in water signs. I am going based on other Gareth fics and head cannons for this, but he does seem very private to everyone except the people he trusts. You would not be able to tell if he likes someone until they’re brought into the friend group. It takes a bit to win him over, even after someone new is brought in. He knows what he wants and will eventually get it, which he is sure of every time. The scene that makes me think this the most is the scene when Jason is stepping on his hand. Gareth was adamant about not giving Eddie up. Mostly because he didn’t know where he was, but he could have told Jason places to look. They’re close friends, if not best friends. He’d have a good idea where Eddie was, not just that Dustin was looking for him and might have found Eddie. He only gave the Dustin part up when it became obvious that Jason wouldn’t stop until he had information and he assaulted him. It just gives me Scorpio vibes.

He and Eddie fucking gossip together. It’s like that stereotype of two teenage girls type of gossip. It is sometimes about music, but more often, it’s about what Eddie overhears when dealing. Eddie learns so much gossip from the different cliques as he deals to people in all of the cliques, and they just don’t care what’s said around him. He always reports back to Gareth and Gareth alone. None of the other Hellfire members are interested in his gossip. Eddie being Eddie lets himself into Gareth’s house as he’s babysitting his sisters to inform him of the latest gossip. “Gareth, you’ll never believe what Amanda was talking about with Stacy.” “What?” “Madison hooked up with Ryan at Tina’s party.” “NO!” “Yes!” “But she’s dating Christian.” “Oh, I’m very aware.” “Lunch is going to be interesting on Monday.” “That it will be Gareth the Great. Can we talk about the dynamic of the older hellfire boys for a second: specifically their music tastes. They’re all obviously music lovers, music lovers of a ton of genres at that. But they all seem to have a bit of a different genre they fit into. Eddie is obviously our metalhead. It was harder to find in the 80s, but I think he’d also love international metal music. He’d be so excited to see Ramstein; it would give him many ideas for Corroded Coffin. Many of them are about fire, but he’d have a lot of ideas nonetheless. Jeff, I thoroughly believe, is more of a rock guy. I think he gets it from his parents. He’d have those cool, slightly younger, maybe teenage parent’s archetype. But Gareth, I fully believe he’s a punk lover. He loves the music, but he also aligns with the core ideologies of punks - like being very anti-establishment, vocal about the mistreatment of minorities, ACAB, anti-war, fuck Reagan, big on equal rights for all, etc. I don’t think he would be overly vocal about it, but he’d argue about it in class with other students and would make his beliefs known. Their music tastes would combine to make Corroded Coffin a genre-hopping metal band.

He’d throw hands for his partner if needed. Is he good at fighting? Honestly 50/50, but he does his best when it comes to his partner. I’ve mentioned him being overprotective before, and I think it comes from either being an only child to a single mom or the only brother to sisters. I think he has this ideology or mindset that even if you are perfectly able to stand up for yourself, it’s his job. It’s not in a toxic masculinity way, more of an I protect the people I love.

He’s not the best in school. He is smart, but I agree with the fandom that he has ADHD and has a hard time focusing on specific things for a prolonged time. He’d be great in a woodworking or shop class; he’d get to use his hands and brain and doesn’t technically have to follow a specific set of rules - even if he should. He’d make you tons of gifts, though. Like a really nice birdhouse, a floating picture frame, if you wear jewelry - a really nice jewelry box. This also makes me think he may go into carpentry for work or keep it as a hobby after Corroded Coffin takes off. I think he’d branch out and begin making guitars for people. He just loves working with his hands.

He is a short king. Apparently, Gwydion is 5’ 8, so he isn’t super short but isn’t the tallest, either. I love the video a fan posted of them carrying Gwydion at a con (also a huge thank you to said person if they ever see this). Gareth, with a taller partner, is an adorable thing. He’d fully take advantage of having a taller partner, piggyback rides, can you get this for me, how’s the weather up there etc. Totally uses your height to check out your boobs if you’ve got them and are comfortable with that. Puts up a fuss when you rest your arm on his shoulders. He actually does like it, but he also likes to tease and playfully harass you. He is the definition of the shorter you are, the closer you are to hell.

The first holiday season, you’re together Gareth bought you a heated blanket. Hawkins is freezing in the winter, and sometimes a regular heating pad doesn’t do the trick. He’d never used a heating pad before you got together, but he’d soon find out how much you use and love yours. So why wouldn’t he get you a heated blanket? It turns into him also loving the blanket. It’s used a little bit too much if you are being honest, at least when you look at your energy bill. It’s used for cuddling while watching movies while sleeping, and he’s even asked you to bring it when going to friends’ houses for movie nights. It really was the best gift.

He’d be extremely loyal once he let anybody into his life. His partner would be no different, or anybody he likes. The only difference is he might be a little bit clingy, but not in an annoying way. He still knows how to give you distance and thoroughly enjoys his space and time. Still, he does prefer to be around his partner and touch them when they’re around one another. He would be the one to throw hands for his partner; in fact, he has. He’s very forward without pushing. He enjoys walking you to class regardless of whether you have the class together or are walking with friends. It’s not that he gets in between you and your friends. It’s more that he’d walk on the outside of your group, and your friends would be on the other side of you. If you have a class with him and your friends, he will sit at the inside or the outside desk, let you sit in the middle and your friend on the other side. He will try to distract you. Usually, by drawing on your hand or by attempting to play footsie. If you’re not dating and unsure, he will still be there for you regardless, no matter what, even if you get another partner.

Some potentially controversial headcanons about sexuality and gender in atla

Ok so I have some headcanons about gender and sexuality in the atlaverse that may controdict some aspects of canon as well as many other's headcanons but I feel go pretty inline with the nations, either based on their inspo country's history or the feel I get from the nations in canon culture. If you disagree that's totally chill I just wanna get my thoughts out there to see who else agrees.

So with that let's begin:

Air nomads

This I think everyone agrees on that the air nomads didn't give a shit about gender or sexuality. Love is love and gender is an illusion.

They also were very pro poly relationships

However, cause of the whole communally raising children thing that's a part of canon I don't think all the temples really had a concept of marriage and some groups may have actually given you odd looks if you wanted to be exclusive with someone

But the general 'let it be' culture meant you really wouldn't get any widespread social grief on the issue just maybe have a few arguments with friends or maybe a partner that wasn't used to being exclusive or was used to being exclusive and you weren't, and you veritably weren't going to be ostracized for your sexuality or preferences in a relationship. It's a domestic issue rather than a social justice one.

Air nomads were by far the most accepting of asexuality and aromaticism.

Water tribe

I actually think things very between the north and the south a lot due to their seperation, but a commonality between them is their strong sense of gender roles and other ridged segregations in gender like the whole waterbending thing.

That being said, transness is very much accepted but there are specific ceremonies for transitioning and coming out to the tribe, and it can mean losing some privileges you had from the gender you were assigned at birth.

There's also a third non-binary gender that has its own specific ceremony. This circumvented a lot of rules about who could learn what type of waterbending, particularly up north but also carried a few unique social responsibilities like officiating weddings but could also strip you of some priviledges from your initially assigned gender, such as paticipation in specific gendered rituals such as women's cerimonies or men's cerimonies.

Those members had their own unique cerimonies and celibrations however.

In the northern watertribe specifically homosexuality is very much accepted but under the current cheiftan unions of politics like Yue's will almost always come before unions of love, so gay individuals can sadly be forced into hetero relationships via arranged mairrage, with the only concessions being that they can take on a single same sex lover outside of the union.

The absoluteness of the arranged mairrage rules can change based on who is in charge however.

Biphobia has had a history of being a problem in the water tribes as they have a huge emphasis on separation and opposites in their culture as their two biggest spirits represent yin and yang. Lesbians were long considered favored by tui and gay men favored by la, as if they were living symbols of the spirits.

There was discourse as to how bi and pan people fit into this model, some even horribly suggesting they were abandoned by the spirits, but the current concesus among spiritual experts and elders is they are actually a symbol of tui and la's love for eachother and thus favored by both.

The southern water tribe has always been laxer about the gender specific stuff and never had the arranged mairrage rules.

It was always much smaller however so LGBT individuals were less common. This often made it harder for homosexual individuals to find romantic love as there were just fewer fellow LGBT people that were avalible.

So if you came out as gay/bi/pan/lesbian to the tribe it was often the tradition to complete your ice dodging cerimony soon after and then become a sailor for at least three years to try and find romance while trading goods with the other nations if you didn't have a partner already.

A majority of southern tribe fishermen/women as a result were LGBT. Being a full-time fisherman is now a euphamism for being a lonely gay person.

Southern watertribe mermaid tales were almost always very gay as a result.

Unfortunately due to the southern watertribe's culture and traditions being decimated by the firenation's raids, a lot of LGBT culture in the southern tribe was also lost.

They're still pretty accepting but because of the dwindled population of the southern tribe and the fact that LGBT people tend to only make up 1-10% of an average population in the real world, it's rare for a gay individual to be born into the southern tribe, usually only once every generation now, if they realize they are gay to begin with.

As a result of that and the fact that bringing it up generally brings up the fact that the firenation destroyed what nice things they had, it's often not talked about outside of between elders mourning better times, which has made it even harder for some individuals to even realize they are LGBT to begin with.

The swamp benders are mostly men who wear leaf loin cloths they gay af and we're probs established by southern watertribe gays and bis that got lost in their travels and decided to settle down in the swamp, eventually attracting the attention of other lgbt earth kingdom people who decided to live with them.

Earth Kingdom

There's a huge divide among how it's treated among peasents and aristocracy

Peasents grew up on stories of past earth kings with many lovers, including several gay ones

So depending on where you live homosexuality is either considered something romantic of fairy-tales or celibrated as something unique and uncommon

In some places where people have more spirituality, some joke that gay people were royals in their past lives.

The earth kingdom is big tho, so some small towns can be homophobic but it's much rarer and usually because they were established by homophobes who were chased from areas that were very anti homophobia.

Fetishization of homosexuality can happen but it's again depending on where you are.

The earth kingdom is also very accepting of asexuality but there are stereotypes such as asexuals usually becoming gurus.

In aristocracy things are a bit different

Homosexuality is still pretty accepted but due to how prevalent arrange mairrages are it's heavily assosiated with affairs and running away from family obligations and thus it's a bit taboo to speak publicly about it in high society.

Lesbianism specifically cause China, what the earth kingdom is based on, has a long history of writing off women's feelings.

The upper crust of Ba Sing Se, despite lots of historically gay earth kings, has a big homophobia issue thanks to the Dai Lee slowly becoming corrupted after Kyoshi died.

Long Feng particularly had a hand in making talking about gay stuff practically off the table or seen as only something for filthy commoners.

Transgenderism, again cause of China historically treating women like shit, is a subject of a lot of discourse in the Earth kingdom, although there are no legal issues with being transgender and one can have their passports changed in certian cities and towns to reflect their gender identity if they move there, but only in those specific towns.

Omashu is one of them and is extremely pro trans and in general pro LGBT even among the aristocracy, infact king Bumi in his first year of rule established specific holidays for celibrating trans people, gay men, lesbians, asexuals, bisexuals, agender people, and any other gender or sexual identity Bumi knew about.

He has added to the list since. Whenever he finds out about a new gender identity or sexuality he sets the day he found out as a day for a feats next year celibrating it.

This is why there are so many feasts in omashu.

He also often officiates gay weddings himself because according to him "gay weddings are the most interesting and creative. They all have mad geniuses for their wedding planners I tell ya"

Tbh he will randomly show up to any wedding in his city cause he loves parties but he will specifically officiate gay ones.

The Fire Nation

Ok this is where some people may get pissed cause I disagree that the firenation is horribly homophobic

I know it was stated by one of the creators that the firenation has anti gay laws thanks to Sozin but Japan had a loooooong history of celibrating gay stuff prior to westernization and the firenation is based off of Japan. Also kinda headcanon Sozin as having a thing for Roku that fell apart with the whole war bs.

So Sozin never imo put into place any homophobic laws aside from banning gay writings and plays within the palace out of bitterness of having Roku betray him and just didn't want to have anything around him that would remind him of him. Dude got so mopey over it he neglected his wife and children a lot, despite the whole thing being 100% his fault.

Azulon on the other hand was a homophobic son of a bitch and put a lot of anti gay and trans laws into effect. While none outlawed same sex relations, they included ones that allowed people to get away with firing people or harming people for being LGBT.

Ozai was also extremely homophobic.

But before all this the fire nation was practically a gay paradise. Fire is the element of passion, and so gay sex and relationships were considered for a long time just as normal as heterosexual relationships.

There were festivals and holidays celibrating gay lovers, lots of LGBT writing and art, and many many plays on the subject

There were several folk stories of Agni the sun spirit coming down to earth to meet his male human lovers, including one that explained why we have night and day. (Tui introduced Agni to one of the volcano spirit's sons so that she may rule the night in peace without his constant incercession and annoying boastfulness)

Soldiers were pretty much expected to have a gay relationship with one of their brothers in arms if they were single to increase the loyalty among troops.

The firenation was the only nation where arranged mairrages could be nullified instantly on the grounds that one of the individuals involved was gay, unless you were the firelord and that was only because it was the firelord's duty to produce at least one heir to continue the linage, so it was seen as the firelord's sacrifice to his or her people to take up at least one opposite sexed partner. Romantic affairs were expected and understood in such situations however so long as there was already an heir to the throne born.

Families could even be punished with jail time for knowingly forcing their gay children into heterosexual relationships.

Gay couples could adopt children too and denying one on the grounds of being gay would be grounds for removal of your position in child care and being blacklisted.

There were still homophobes but homophobia was squashed a lot

Azulon managed to "justify" the cultural shift and changes to laws by having newspapers publishing fake news about pedophilia cases being linked to homosexuality as well as other stories linking homosexuality to degenerate acts.

He also used the culture of honor and family loyalty to shame gay children for ending their parent's bloodlines and claiming gay individuals were less likely to take care of their parents in their old age. And that trans children dishonored their parents by rejecting their "birth gender"

He even had certian folk stories changed to be heterosexual

This allowed homophobia and transphobia to spred in the firenation

However many individual towns held onto their pro LGBT roots and still published and performed gay literary works and plays.

And azulon and ozai were unable to remove many nonheteronormative traditions, such as guy friends being extremely physically affectionate, more so than with their girl counterparts.

In some areas it's still customary to greet close male friends with platonic kisses on the cheek

Zuko repealed many of the old laws established by his father and grandfather almost immediately, and reestablished many old holidays and protections for LGBT individuals.

Fixing the damage is still taking time, but with a corrected history of the firenation being now taught in classes thanks to zuko and aang, things are getting back to the way they once were slowly.

But no, we must ALWAYS cater to them. When have they catered to us, though? Imagine if we went around behaving the same way.

And you act like it's a privilege? We fought so hard to get scraps, and that’s a privilege to you. You disregard even our most defanged activism and believe we were gifted wlw rep because society loves us THAT MUCH in your eyes! We didn’t FIGHT for it, it was handed to us on a silver plate.

Did you see how much we campaigned for Harley Quinn (questionable a show as it is) to get a 3rd season just so we could actually see Harley and Ivy be an established couple, after the comics 100% erased their relationship, and you call that we got it PRIVILEGED? HQ is one of DC’s most successful pieces of media and according to the creators themselves it’s actually very fucking cheap to make, and it was still not certain that we were going to get a 3rd fucking season when, had it been a show just as profitable with a straight main couple you KNOW that would’ve been a given.

Even you boys' "analysis" of why we get to see wlw in cartoons is so stupid and exemplifies how much you refuse to understand our realities and struggles. It almost only happens in cartoons because love between women is never taken seriously and neither is animation, as it’s associated with kids.

You think we get it in animation because straight men get horny for us (which, by the way, they don’t when our love and lust are portrayed in a SERIOUS humane way, only when it’s a performance for men), when it happens in media that's mostly aimed at KIDS. Korrasami and HQ are the only examples I can think of that weren’t intended for a super young audience, but you fix your mouths saying it’s because we’re sexy to straight men. Do you REALLY think it happens in mostly children’s media because of our sexualization by men? Do you realize that would mean we’re being shown to children as a sexual product? Don’t be stupid. Other than Harlivy in HQ, none of them are shown doing more than kissing and holding hands.

If it were true that we get wlw in cartoons because of our fetishization by straight men, it would also mean that our fetishization IS A PRIVILEGE, because it'd be getting us humane and complex representation. Do you hear yourselves? Our fetishization gets us RAPED AND BATTERED. Gee, for people who got so passionate about being fetishized only after wlw talking about our own fetishization that also has way more dire material repercussions than annoying fujoshis started to get traction you sure do seem to think that when fetishization happens to YOU it’s a crime against humanity but when it happens to wlw it’s a fucking privilege.

Only reason we've gotten that representation is, again, because we've campaigned for DECADES to get ANYTHING, and some of us made the work of basically infiltrating the creative field and made + pushed for our content to be published/released with tooth and nail. It wasn't GIVEN to us, we FOUGHT for it.

Anyway, back to how white gay men (often the gentile ones) constantly take from us (gays of color, wlw, trans women, Jewish gays) but then turn around and think they’re the pinnacle of culture; I'd just fucking like it if you could at least treat us with basic respect and recognize our amazing creativity if you're gonna steal our creative labor constantly, OR if you refuse to do that, THEN MAKE YOUR OWN FFS.

Humans are Weird “Keep them Warm pt. 3″

Part three guys. We are almost there. Hopefully I will be able to get out some other stories in the next week, and probably another chapter of the book, but for now this is going to have to do :). Hope you guys like it. 

He woke up flat on his back staring up at the ceiling. It was dark, but that was expected when you were living on a space station. Hand to his head, he sat up and rubbed his eyes becoming aware of a now-familiar sensation tugging at the skin of his stomach and sides. 

It had been almost a month since he had been stuck with the alien eggs, feeding off him for support, and in that time he had grown a greater appreciation for women and pregnancy, not to say that what he was experiencing was in any way close, but it did have elements that were rather similar. 

Testing had concluded a likely series of events, which had lead to this strange ability by the adaptids. It appeared as if the original Adaptids had had the usual binary gender system that you see in many species, a male, and a female, and at that time, their eggs had been primarily parasitic until hatching. It may have been, that, originally, they laid their eggs on other species, and a few of the eggs would survive. However, when they met the original version of the host gender, the situation had turned out to be mutually beneficial for both of them. The more mutually supportive, the more the hosts evolved to help the adaptids. Eventually a line of DNA acquisition allowed the host to pass on its DNA through the parasitic eggs.

Over time, this ability had allowed the adaptids  to incorporate other species into their genetic code successfully breeding in desired traits. They probably hadn’t been a species that was originally intended for sentience, but their ability to adapt had changed things. 

It was concluded that the use of a human for adaptids evolution was an inevitability and not an accident. The queen had probably intended to do what she did the moment she saw them, it was in their nature to do so.

For him, the tradeoff wasn’t so bad, he supposed. Granted he had what could best be described as an absolutely MASSIVE tic, but one that allowed him to eat whatever he wanted whenever he wanted. 

As far as his newfound appreciation for pregnant women, that came with his inability to sleep on his stomach, strange and sometimes unnerving cravings, random nausea, and, recently, an extreme sensitivity to smell, not to mention the almost compulsive need people felt to touch the eggs whenever they saw them. 

The smell though, that was the worst thing. Whatever this was, it wasn’t simply a distaste for specific smells, but he swore on his life that he could Smell things he shouldn’t have been able to smell.

He stood up, stretched and walked over to the viewing window pressing the button to open the shutters on his way past bathed suddenly in the light of  Jupiter’s stormy red eye. He paused there looking out at the view. He took a deep breath closing his eyes and smiling to himself. Not many people get to live their dream, not many people become what they wanted to be as a kid. 

He was incredibly lucky.

A knock at the door startled him from his musings.

Speaking of incredibly lucky….

“Come in!” He called wandering over to the side of the room to grab a glass of water.

THe door hissed open, and Sunny stepped into the room, ducking under the short door frame before it hissed closed behind her. She glanced towards the window, “WHo the hell decided to give you the executive suite.” 

He smirked, “pretty suite view, Isn’t it.” 

“Where do you want this.” She wondered holding the breakfast trey before her.

“Uh…. just set in on the side table there.” He said stepping into the bathroom and closing the door with a sharp hiss.

Sunny heard the water turn on, “Krill wants to see you this morning.” She called, a little louder so he could hear it.”

“Doesn’t surprise me.” The man called back as he angrily tried to adjust the water temperature. He swore it only ever got lukewarm especially of those mornings he just wanted to scald the first layer of his skin off.

When that wasn’t enough, he turned off the water and got dressed eventually returning to his room where Sunny sat over a large bowl of salad. Luckily, the Drev, as herbivores, were capable of eating certain types of earth food. It was a real monetary plus as thousands of dollars were spent simply trying to keep the humans fed, much less their alien counterparts.

He sat down next to her and sniffed at the air, “Pancakes, syrup butter, and orange juice.”

She raised an eyebrow at him, “Am I really that predictable.”

He shrugged, “Well there are only so many breakfast options, but I could smell it.” 

She looked skeptical, “You can smell orange juice.”

He sniffed at the air, “You can’t? It’s pretty strong.”

“Not a human, remember.”

He gave a rueful smile, “Whoopse, sometimes i forget.” 

He pulled the lid off the top of the breakfast dish, and was hit in the face with a rather strong smell of breakfast. Luckily it wasn’t unpleasant, but it was surprisingly overpowering, and he had to shake himself a few times to dissipate the smell, “Wow, that’s strong.”

She eyed him again in confusion, “The smell of pancakes is…. Strong?”

“Even YOU should be able to smell it.”

When she didn’t he finally let it go and ate his breakfast. IT tasted pretty good, more flavorful than usual, but he supposed that was partially due to the strength of the smell.

While he was eating, Sunny leaned over and pulled up the side of his shirt to examine the eggs. He let her. When other people did it, it was kind of annoying, but he was generally ok with sunny doing what she wanted, they were friends enough for that.

“Do they…. Look bigger or is it just me.”

He shook his head, “Eggs don’t grow, Sunny. They are a little bit heavier though, which is a bitch on my back.”

Sunny grunted and sat back in her chair, “Have you shown the admiral.”

He snorted, “You should have seen the look on her face. I think I may have just given her nightmares for a few weeks.”

The Commander finished up his breakfast, and together He and Sunny stepped out of the room and made their way down the hall. It took them longer than they intended to reach their desired destination, as everyone in their dog had to stop and take a look. Despite the supposed “privacy” he was entitled to based on medical procedure, his condition had spread around the station like wildfire. He was no longer “the commander” but the guy “with the eggs” or (erroneously) “The guy who hooked up with an alien spider. 

The amount of times he had to explain was starting to get a little old, but whatever. Those who didn’t want to touch, wanted to ask a million questions, and vise versa. Occasionally there were those who fit into both camps.

As he was doing this, he began to notice something strange. Sometimes less strange and more disgusting.

He sniffed at the air after one of the guys finally left to be on his way wrinkling his nose, “That guy did NOT shower today.”

Sunny glanced over at him,  “I thought some humans only showered every-other day.”

“Well they SHOULD be doing it every day.” 

The more people they met the more issues he began to have. Floods of aftershave, perfume and flowery deodorant. When they didn’t smell like soap, they smelled like body odor, and when they didn’t smell like that, they smelled like the last thing they had eaten. He rubbed at his temples as the headache began throbbing slowly at the back of his skull.

“Are you ok?” Sunny wondered

They had finally made it down the hall and into the docking bay. 

Stepping through the doors into the massive room, The commander was hit by an absolutely stifling wave of ol, grease, solvant, BO, and paint. He grew lightheaded and had to reach out and steady himself against Sunny’s arm as they walked down the length of the room. She glanced over at him nervously, but he only shook his head at her covering his nose with one hand as they made their way across the deck and to their ship, docked at the other end.

The station was an absolutely massive piece of engineering, probably the size of a large city, and being added onto every day. While it wasn’t likely to ever reach anything near the size of something like, say, the Death Star, it would still probably end up very large.

The Harbinger looked almost tiny compared to the room that surrounded it.

Adam was relieved when they were finally inside, and the outside smells had all but dissipated. Walking next to him, Sunny escorted him up to the medical bay where Dr. Katie and Krill were already hard at work. 

Stepping through the doors, Adam was suddenly assaulted by the pungent smell of disinfectant and isopropyl (Rubbing Alcohol). The smell was so strong that it made him momentarily light headed. He swayed on his feet hand to his head, and Sunny was forced to steady him. “Adam, Adam, are you ok.”

The room spun around him as the smell intensified. He leaned heavily against Sunny as the room echoed, the headache intensified. 

Voices rose and fell around him, and it seemed as if he tilted sideways in slow motion. Something stopped him from falling to the floor, and he vaguely recognized Sunny’s armored arms holding him up.

“Get him to one of the beds.” Krill ordered.

“No… no I think he said something about the smell.” Sunny protested 

Dr. Katie interjected, “Then let’s get him into the other room,”\

He momentarily blacked out here, but woke a few minutes later with the smell, mostly, absent and a pounding headache. “Commander, Commander are you ok.” A light flashed from one eye to the other, and he tried to wave them off.

“I, I’m ok…. Just got a bit dizzy there for a second.”

“Your blood pressure is normal.” Commented Dr. Katie

“Yeah, but did you bleach the entire building this morning,'' he moaned. “I feel like my eyes are going to singe out of my head.”

The two looked back and fourth between each other and him, “What do you mean Commander,” Katie asked, “It smells just like it normally does.”

He shook his head, “Guess again…. Can we just to the exam here. I can’t go back in there.”

They were clearly worried, but they agreed to humor him, allowing him to lay back and rest his head. He could smell Dr. Katie's perfume. He would have said that it smelled like cinnamon accept for the chemical aftertaste that it left lingering. Her breath was sharp with mint, but even under that he could tell she had a chocolate chip muffin for breakfast.

He decided against mentioning it seeing as it might sound a bit creepy.

He tried focusing on something other than the smells while the two of them took a look at the eggs, and where they had adhered to the skin. 

“Nothing appears abnormal.” Krill commented, “Skin color is fine,”

“Are you having any other strange symptomes?” Dr. Katie wondered 

“Hungry…… been craving for red meat ... Probably protein or iron…. And then there is the smell….. Oh and ive been unusually cold lately.” 

Checking his temperature, they didn’t find anything abnormal and drew some blood to make sure there weren't any problems hiding under the surface they just couldn't see.

As for the smell, that was only getting worse. He had gone onto the bridge to finish off his work, and was bombarded on all sides by perfume aftershave toothpaste, deodorant, body odor and breakfast hours old.

His head throbbed.

He stood, “Alright, everyone get the hell out.” The crew turned to look at him with confusion.

“Commander?”

“You heard what I said, get the hell out, and take a shower, all of you.”

They looked between each other confused, “I don’t understand-”

“What part of go take a damned shower don’t you understand/”

The crew stood, not entirely sure what was going on, “Is everything ok commander?” Someone asked

He groaned a bit, “You all stink to high heaven.”

It was to Sunny’s amusement that almost the entire rooms turned to sniff at themselves discreetly appearing puzzled.

“The perfume and aftershave and the lotion. It has to go. I have the biggest headache you wouldn’t believe.”

“You can smell my deodorant from here?” One of the men wondered skeptically.

“Yeah I can tell it stopped working about an hour ago.” That left the guy frowning as he turned to the other crew members, “Vanilla, leather and musk, poder, strawberry, chlorine from the station pool, and you, you had onions in your breakfast.

“You can’t seriously smell that from here.” One of the crewmember pointed out.

“Let me break this down to you. I can smell EVERYTHING.”\

A few of the crew-members began to look a little nervous, “Everything, sir. The lieutenant wondered.”

He looked at her, expression a little softer, and a tad more long suffering, “yes crewman…. everything .”

She exited the room rather judiciously as did a few other members of the crew still sniffing at themselves, less discreetly now than before, “No perfume, no aftershave, only odorless deodorant, please.” When they were all gone, Commander Vir slumped down in his seat with a groan and a shiver, “Why does it always have to be so cold in here.”| Sunny glanced at the internal ship readings on her console, “Adam, its like 75 degrees in here, and may I remind you that you have specifically told everyone that if they touch the thermostat you are going to make them sleep next to the engine room.”

He spun in his seat rubbing his arms with the chill, “Hmm, the engine room. Doesn’t sound half bad.

Sunny frowned, “Adam, its like 120 degrees just off the engine room.

“Perfect.” he muttered

When the crew finally returned from their ministrations, they found the commander missing. Sunny, who had stepped out for a few moments, only to find the Commander gone when she got back had no idea where he had gone.

He was finally located about three hours later curled up on the floor of one of the auxiliary engine hallways. Heat directly around the core could reach dangerous levels, so he had chosen one of the outlying hallways. Even so, it was about 123 degrees, and dehydration had started to set in. He was eventually brought back to the medical bay where Krill acquired some heating blankets.

Over the next few weeks, his symptoms only got worse and even more strange. He was hungry all the time, and always cold. He was often seen seeking out warm areas to curl up and bask like some sort of lizard. Krill was forced to implement a makeshift heating room near the infirmary to avoid allowing him to wander off into more dangerous areas. His ability to smell at this time became uncanny and seemingly impossible for a human. He could smell the very chemicals used to make certain types of perfume. Usually he knew what a person had for their last meal, and even the one before that. He even claimed to be able to smell hormone levels on the other humans, and, as far as they were concerned, he hadn’t been wrong. 

It became such an issue that he was practically forced into a smelless sterile environment for his own health. 

If that wasn’t enough, he was practically taken out by the back pain caused by the weight of the eggs supported by the most unstable part of the spine, especially in men, who did not have the anatomical assistance in carrying weight on that part of their bodies, like women do. It probably didn’t help that ever doctor aboard the ship wanted a look at him for scientific purposes.

As far as his personal life went, one of his brothers had caught wind of the situation, and he dared not guess what was going to happen when he called them up next. He could really only share these worries with Sunny seeing as she was the only creature on the ship, aside form Krill, who didn’t carry any noticeable sent, unless you counted spinach and some fruit to be overpowering smells. 

If Krill was right, the creatures were due to hatch almost any day now.

And no one was entirely sure what was going to come out when they did.

okay so. i probably shouldn’t talk about this considering that i have never experienced it myself.... but whenever i see a story about some hollywood star relapsing into their addiction of/maybe overdosing on whatever drug, there’s always a difference between how people react when it’s a female star (say demi lovato overdosing back in 2018 after a few years of sobriety) and a male star (most currently dax shepard relapsing after 16 years of sobriety).

for example, back in 2018 when demi overdosed on heroin, there was a whole stream of people on the buzzfeed articles, alt press articles and even just the normal news stories about it commenting things like: “demi’s just an attention-seeking bitch like she’s always been. she wanted to be in the headlines and that’s what she got. SHE NEEDS TO CONTROL HER ADDICTION of being an attention whore for the press and also her drug addiction, obviously. but shame on her for relapsing!!!! how lazy is she??? she is NOT TRYING HARD ENOUGH!” or there were also streams of “i have absolutely NO SYMPATHY for this spoilt brat girl doing this for media attention! snooze button on a slow news day. she needs to learn to control herself! the world doesn’t revolve around you and your drug addiction, honey. go back to therapy to get your head out of your ass!” type comments on every article about demi. like woohoo for you, brenda or coleman. here’s your “stupid fucking asshole of the day” award 🥇.

whereas with dax sheppard in the last week (and ok i just read an upworthy article about it on fb just now bc i’m bored) and everyone’s like: “oh how BRAVE of dax for speaking out about his relapsing into his addiction!!!! the poor man! fame must be hard with lockdown!!! what a good hearted man, addiction is hard in general anyway! good for him for speaking out again, i don’t have much else to say.” and the like. in other words, all i’ve read in response to dax’s relapse into his prescription drug addiction is is an outpouring of support. although, then again, it’s probably because i’ve only read one article on it.... or maybe i did read another stream of comments the other day..... but i can’t remember them.

but my point is: why the fuck is the backlash so virulently derogatory and hurtful when it’s a woman relapsing into their addiction or overdosing???? whereas when it’s a dude, everyone’s all chill and supportive and calling him brave for admitting that he’s relapsing???? like if another female celeb said something similar during this time, they’d be hit with the stuff that demi received when overdosing two years ago.

okay yeah, obvs there were people supporting demi back in 2018 saying things like the fake comment i wrote for dax, saying things such as: “addiction is a cycle that’s hard to kick and leave behind. i’ve been there, and most of us will be at some point in our life. but i’d never wish it on anyone. that’s the one thing no one understands about addiction: that relapse can happen for most people. my heart goes out to demi!” or the like. but mostly it was the virulent bullshit attacking her for being weak and being an attention whore and not allowing her any empathy or sympathy bc “shame! shame! shame on her for breaking! how weak she is 🙄! where IS HER self-restraint as a YOUNG W O M A N?? this is why young women don’t know how to control themselves these days!” as if demi, as a young woman in hollywood, is responsible for teaching young girls and women to control themselves. like shut the fuck up doris/henry. that’s YOUR goddamned fucking job as parents/was your job as parents. it is no ones fault but your own if your parenting methods are/were defective enough that you think people solely rely on tv stars to raise kids (much like barney stinson in himym thinking that bob barker from the price is right was his dad growing up). the raising of someone’s child is not some young celeb’s fucking job, unless it’s THEIR OWN FRICKIN KID. for fuck’s sake.

whereas everyone seems supportive and understanding of dax’s admission of relapse and sending him “love and strength is this dire time 😊!” and other overly nice stuff and saying stuff about hai family going through this time as well. all like “oh his family must be struggling to but that’s okay because he’s open about his struggle with everyone! so BRAVE!” etc etc etc. there is no mention so far of him having to “control himself”. or maybe i haven’t read far enough. not that i will, considering i read like one celeb story a month at the very least, so as to not overload myself on bitterness like i did back in my teens with constant access to the E! news/celeb channel.

all i’m saying is that people need to have more sympathy and empathy towards people who struggle with addiction and relapsing, regardless of wether they’re male or female (or obvs trans and non-binary etc as well). like obvs this is coming from someone who has never experienced it herself/themself, but that doesn’t mean that i show no sympathy or empathy for their struggle. and i also so say this regardless of their background, no matter whether they’re rich stars or the poor drug addict on the street.

because i easily could become an alcoholic or whatever else, myself, at any point of my life.... because life can throw any fucking thing at you and out of nowhere..... then suddenly you’re using drugs or alcohol to cope. then you develop an addiction over many years. obviously this is more endemic in hollywood, considering that you can get your hands on literally everything and anything..... if you know the right people etc. and it’s also why i ended up ditching my idea of wanting to be a hollywood star when i was older, back when i was 16. because even when you can have the worlds best therapists and drug rehab facilities at your service/disposal as a hollywood star, that doesn’t exclude you from struggling with drug addiction and relapse or needing sympathy/empathy and support. it’s easy as fuck to fall back into your addiction when you’re unfortunately surrounded by it in hollywood on a frequent basis anyway.

How Black Lagoon Begins Attacking Gender Norms

Rei Hiroe’s Black Lagoon is one of the most intelligent, fun, and kinetic action-crime dramas around. The entire series looks and feels like an action movie; even the way it’s structured feels more akin to a series of movies, with different self-contained arcs building off of the previous installments. While many action movies include philosophical elements and dialogue in an attempt to make the festival of blood and explosions seem more intelligent without exploring the issues, Black Lagoon actively builds its themes and the substance of its plot and character arcs around its stellar action-hero philosophy quotes. One of its strongest points is how integral all the characters’ social identities are to the way the story is told. Chief among these is the way gender is explored and examined. Looking through the first five stories of the series, a powerful message about breaking out of the toxic gender binary is developed, creating an argument that drives the rest of the series. This argument is never made explicitly, but instead through the pattern of behaviors exhibited by Japanese salaryman Rock, as the feminine, and hotshot gunslinger Revy, as the masculine.

For anyone who has not read the series, a little catch-up is in order. At the beginning, Okajima Rokuro, a generic Japanese salaryman, is kidnapped by Revy, the gunhand of Lagoon Traders, a company of underworld couriers. Rokuro was in possession of a disc the Lagoon Traders were hired to steal, and Revy wanted to sweeten the pay with some ransom. During a shootout with mercenaries hired by Rokuro’s company and a chase to certain death, Rokuro goes from wanting to return to his ordinary life, to finding out his bosses are planning to let him die, and finally to diving into the underworld as a crewman aboard the Black Lagoon, taking up the nickname Rock. He then spends the first few stories of the series being taught how to perform basic duties and tasks aboard the torpedo boat by Revy until they have a falling out and make up after a dramatic argument. It is this series of events that sets up the larger dialogue on gender in the rest of the series.  

In an interview published for Sunday GX magazine and printed in volume 8, series author Rei Hiroe and Gen Urobuchi, author of the Black Lagoon novelization, discuss their views on gender in light of the series’ myriad badass women. In it, Urobuchi is quoted as saying,

“I naturally have this idea that women are strong or tough. Like men are just male bees—creatures that should die after they ejaculate…In that sense men are weak. Whereas the battle begins for women once they get pregnant…Women have to keep fighting. I don’t see that kind of strength as cute. I can’t dote on it.”

Later on, when discussing the final scene of The Wild Bunch, in which the heroic cowboys go off to their deaths trying to save their friends, Hiroe and Urobuchi have the following exchange:

Hiroe: “They’re already dead at that point. That’s what’s so cool. They have no intention of getting out alive.”

Urobuchi: “That’s really the only moment men can compete with women, I think. There’d have to be a third world war for men to shine. Like a Mad Max type of world. Maybe only when there’s a real danger of extinction will men have a role. Right now this society could exist only with women.”

This lays out the core of the series’ argument about gender: women are strong because they fight to live and make life, whereas men place all their value on their own deaths and the deaths of others, and the current gender binary denies women their strength and forces them into submission with the violence of death-based masculinity. This is somewhat familiar, since associations between the genders and life and death in this vein are common across cultures. What is particularly instructive for how the series is constructed is how the machismo, male-dominant view of gender is embedded in action movies, particularly cowboy movies. For anyone who has read Black Lagoon, it’s clear how powerful an influence cowboy and other action movies have on the series.

Rock spent his life as a low-level employee in a large Japanese company. Like most companies around the world, large Japanese corporations like the one Rock worked for are male-dominated and are typified by traditional ideals of masculinity, with the CEO and board of directors, among others, working in the role of powerful, great men, and everyone under them working their way closer to that great ideal of manhood. Rock, being so low in the company, is far from manhood, in that sense; he describes his job as mostly consisting of bowing to superiors, and his general conciliatory, subservient attitude throughout the early part of the series can easily be read as traditionally feminine. From that perspective, his time at that company can be read as emasculating (for more on the idea of emasculating corporate culture and men trying to take back their manhood with violence, see Fight Club). Rock even reveals that he would blow off steam at a batting cage, which is a notably phallic activity, with bats and balls, and, being a sport-based hobby, is more traditionally masculine by nature; in a sense, after constantly kissing ass and being forced to get drunk to keep his bosses happy, he recharged his masculinity by knocking his stress into the far end of the cage.

Revy, on the other hand, fits perfectly into macho-violent cowboy movie masculinity during the first set of stories. If she had been replaced by a man, then superficially the story could have been told the same way, with the only difference being that Rock would likely have been a little less shocked to see Two Hand smile while he killed all those mercenaries. She’s short-tempered, mean, constantly looks out for herself before anyone else, and is just so indignant that she has to take orders from anyone. She’s greedy and aggressive and takes great joy in both risking her life and taking the lives of others. Throughout the first few stories, Revy often complains that every little thing Rock does wrong costs her money, and she’s not particularly generous with her own. Though she continues this throughout the rest of the series, and so it isn’t specific to this period, the fact that Revy is most often seen in her downtime looking at porno magazines promising the largest-breasted women around drives home the kind of macho, hypermasculine role she fills. We later learn that she grew up on the streets of NYC, having to run from street criminals and violent police officers. She would take up the gun at age 11 and begin emulating the only kind of power she knew up to that point: the violent men who terrorized her. Her worldview is defined by this dog-eat-dog attitude, with people being nothing more than dead bodies waiting to happen and profit from. She’s so scared of showing vulnerability and anything that could be seen as feminine because the last time she was vulnerable and feminine, she was nearly killed in the gutter by dirty cops.

The pilot chapter of the series sets out to demonstrate the gendered positions of Rock and Revy. Revy starts off the chapter by messing up her boss Dutch’s plan by kidnapping Rock for extra cash. She is then indignant when Dutch reprimands her for this, because she was trying to take initiative and be independent, masculine qualities often praised at companies such as the one Rock worked for. Rock spends all his time whining, or as Revy calls it, “bitching,” about what’s going on, being very demanding, and wanting everyone to take care of everything for him, all of which puts him in a stereotypically feminine role, and a negative one at that. At the bar, Revy belittles Rock’s manhood for drinking beer, saying rum “is what a real man drinks,” and ends up in a drinking contest, because Rock has to prove he’s a man despite his feminine role and Revy, as a “real man,” can’t back down. Revy then demonstrates her penchant for and love of violence as she kills a bunch of the EO mercenaries hired by Rock’s company to kill them and retrieve the disc, just living her best life. The turn for Rock in this chapter is when he talks to his boss and finds out he plans to let Rock die; the company leaders will reward his death with their presence at his funeral, showing the masculine value of death and the power of the executives’ masculinity that their presence is meant to be that great a reward. As the mercenaries chase the Lagoon into the straits, Revy demonstrates her masculine lack of regard for her own life by nonchalantly resigning herself to death. Rock, on the other hand, embraces the opportunity to take up the masculinity his company denied him by devising an insane plan to win the day. After coming out on top and choosing to join the Lagoon, however, that masculinity starts to change for Rock. By choosing to join the Lagoon, Rock was choosing that as his way of life, not simply the place he was willing to die. For Revy’s part, it’s easy to read the way she relishes her part in Rock’s plan as a cowboy choosing to die how she lived, but it can also be read as her accepting a way to fight to stay alive in the way she sees best, which is itself an important turn for Revy. These points are developed further in the rest of the opening of the series.

Throughout the next four stories, Rock remains at the low end of the totem pole, still receiving his training and unsure of how he will actually make his living on the Lagoon, placing him in a similarly feminine position as he was in as the errand boy in a large corporation. Revy emphasizes this with her masculine sense of inherent authority, constantly bossing Rock around and belittling him for failing to learn sailing knots faster or not checking his scuba gear thoroughly. Revy also buys Rock a Hawaiian shirt, which is never seen because Rock refuses to wear it. While buying clothes for a man may be seen as feminine, it more resembles Revy trying to institute a work uniform, since she got it to replace the semi-formal work clothes Rock still wears; it should be noted that Benny, the Lagoon’s engineer and another man who takes a passive position in the crew, wears a Hawaiian shirt. Revy’s masculine position is further solidified in Ring-Ding Ship Chase, the second story, when she single-handedly took out several motorboats filled with heavily-armed men and mounted with machine guns. Rasta-Blasta, the third story, pushes in another direction, with Revy taking a masculine approach to watching over Garcia, the young boy they’re transporting for sale, by threatening to beat and kill him when he won’t comply with orders. Revy’s role can be read as either paternal disciplinarian or like a cowboy angry because kids, which she never wanted, cramp her style. Rock takes on the maternal role in how he deals with Garcia in that story, being more gentle and nurturing. Later on, Rock tries to stop Revy and ass-kicking terrorist-turned-maid Roberta from fighting to the death partly in an attempt to protect them as women, because he still thinks like how things work in Japan. But of course, Revy has to fight Roberta, because, as a “real man,” she can’t stop before things are settled.

Die Rückkehr des Alders, the fourth story, represents the major turning point in this opening arc. During their mission to salvage a Nazi painting from a sunken German sub, Revy leaves Rock behind for a moment to take medals and things from the dead soldiers so she can make a little extra money on the side. Rock takes a stand, saying she should leave them behind. While taking a stand can be read as masculine, Rock does so in defense of what the medals meant to the soldiers, and how those sentiments are more valuable than whatever money can be made from them, essentially taking a feminine position in support of life and love. The fact that Rock backs down by the end is what really does in any hope of this being a masculine moment for Rock. Revy, on the other hand, lays out the bare bones of her cowboy “we’re dead men walking” mentality, pushing herself further into the macho corner. Here is where she reveals what her childhood was like and argues that the bones in the sub and the medals were essentially the same: just things. There’s no value in things like sentiment, which people build lives around. She’s literally placing monetary value on the deaths of Nazi soldiers, the starkest version of her masculinity. She continues when raiding the neo-Nazi ship by killing everyone she sees, including the hired staff who were unaffiliated with the neo-Nazis. When she kills them, she doesn’t have her usual smile, a sign of how her desire to remain in this powerful role is stressing her, how it’s not really bringing her a happy life.

The big conclusion happens in the follow-up story Calm Down Two Men, which sees Revy and Rock going on a simple errand run and then getting lunch. During the errand run, both demonstrate their typical patterns of behavior. Rock is more submissive, just trying to get along, and Revy is aggressive and angry, using violence as her way of handling business. Their roles here play out fine enough with the first two errands, but Revy nearly gets them into a shootout at the Rip-Off Church before Rock saves the day with some diplomacy. Revy is put on edge as Sister Yolanda tells Revy to learn from Rock, which would disrupt her status and position in multiple ways. At lunch, they get into an argument which ultimately dispels the tension left between them after their time in the sub. It is instigated by Rock, who is taking a stand for his principles, a stand that demonstrates his new masculinity. Revy tries to take control back quickly by threatening to shoot Rock dead, since she refuses to be put onto the defensive, which she would interpret as a weak, vulnerable feminine position. Rock redirects the gun and later takes a punch without flinching to show that he can’t be stopped with violence. Rock speaks here about how he got by at work before, and how Revy inspired him by showing how much more he could have in life. This scares Revy, putting her on the defensive, to hear someone demonstrate how hollow and insignificant the power she was wielding truly was. Eventually, Revy sees that Rock is actually offering her something more powerful in exchange and takes him up on it. To sum up Rock’s offer, “Well, if there aren’t any Robin Hoods…then BE a Robin Hood,” meaning take a stand for the principles you want to uphold in life. Before the chapter is out, Revy asks Rock if he’s with her or against her, just like in the sub, in an attempt to place her new path near her familiar ground. Rock doesn’t allow her that simplicity.

In this way, the two switch places in their gender roles by the conclusion of this opening arc, but do so in a way that breaks them free from the stereotypical gender binary. Just as Urobuchi put it, Rock has fully formed his new, life-affirming masculinity by the end of the argument, while Revy is only just starting to chart the course of her new, powerful femininity; to complete the parallel to sex described by Urobuchi, Revy and Rock smoke after their fight and “kiss” their cigarettes to light Revy’s. The argument fully demonstrates how the old gender binary our heroes left behind was damaging to each of them, with Rock left emasculated and, more importantly, unable to live life his own way because of how he always came up short of expectations, and Revy being a tightly-wound ball of self-destructive anger and violence doomed to leave this world without having really gotten anything out of it. Overall, it’s a clever, subtle, and effective way to demonstrate why traditional gender roles are harmful and degrading to all involved. While, as a nonbinary person, I have to point out it still is based on a binary view of gender, it’s still an interesting way to demonstrate how breaking free from the traditional gender binary is empowering and can redefine the course of a person’s life for the better.

the  way  that  madeleine  has  enemies  is  sickening  !  i’m  looking  for  something  where  they  genuinely  hate  one  another  and  there’s  no  chance  of  them  EVER  becoming  friends  .  i  have  no  clue  as  to  why  they  wouldn’t  be  friends  ,  but  i  want  is  please  .

so this is something I've been mulling over for a while now - do you reckon it'd be possible to make a version of a/b/o that isn't fundamentally transphobic, or would it reach the point of "this is so different that you might as well not call it a/b/o" before that? off the top of my head you'd have to take out all elements of g!p, mpreg, and biological essentialism, and it'd probably be possible to write a version of a/b/o with that framework, but I don't know if I'm missing anything.

a/b/o is a reactionary trope that relies on cissexism-derived biological essentialism to function. Like, that’s the engine that powers the bdsm/power dynamics, cisheteronormative breeding/family building, “dub/non-con”, etc. elements that draw people to it, and led people to create it in the first place. 

Like, my best attempt at describing a non-transphobic, non-shitty typical a/b/o adjacent fic would include:

Werewolves (let’s face it, werewolves can be really cool if written well, and there’s a lot of really good ways to write them, a lot of ways to subvert tired subtropes within the trope)

Found Family-focused family/pack building (because wolves often adopt wolves from other packs into their own, blood lineage isn’t really a thing; much like vampires being created, newly turned werewolves of any age can be considered their sire’s child; if it needs to have a pregnancy arc between two men or two women, there’s IVF/IUI, or magically/spiritually-induced pregnancies, and of course writing a fully fledged complex trans character with their own non-pregnancy arc and virtues/flaws/goals/etc. and getting relevant trans beta writers who aren't your friends to keep it on track if you’re a cis writer)

A flexible, non-binary gendered society (rather than the rigidly structured biology-is-destiny a/b/o society) that’s trans inclusive either explicitly, or implicitly if it’s a new social universe with different rules. 

If mating seasons have to exist, they’re cultural more than biological, and no biological processes that could impede or trouble a person’s ability to properly consent. 

No inherent, glorified or reified power dynamics, certainly none rooted in or fostered through biology. 

That doesn’t seem very much at all like a/b/o to me. It’s a werewolf AU, which is the reason why a/b/o was created in the first place. It wasn’t enough. It needed something more than just a supernatural bent

I’ll continue on below for a bit on some simplified functions of a/b/o, but it’s mostly just some ramblings.

Like, to quote the originators of the genre/trope:

I'd like to see Alpha male Jared, and Bitch male Jensen. There are three types of men, alpha males, beta males, and omega males. Alpha males are like any ordinary guy with the exception of their cocks, they work just like canines (the knot, tons of cum, strong breeders, etc) The beta male, is an ordinary guy without the special cock. Omega males are capable of child bearing and often called bitch males.

Like, I want you to look at that real close and see what’s going on in there.

This was created to be a trope where there’s a world where women, as we explicitly know them, don’t exist, but where a subgroup of men take up the functional role of the woman in the heteronormative social structure of the world. It’s also not surprising that (assumedly cis) women created and initiated the spread of this trope.

Look at the language used. This is heavily, explicitly gendered for a reason. If you’ve read much of anything about how the male gaze impacts female sexuality, you’ll know a common response is for women to position themselves out of the proverbial frame entirely, so that no part of them can explicitly exist as an object, where they can take on the role of a subject. There’s no women whose experiences will directly link to her own and her own perceptions, comfort/discomfort/etc.

However, many of these women also have been heavily affected by the male gaze and heteronormativity, and that combined with not knowing what a real gay male relationship is like, what it looks like, what experiences might be unique to it...they fill in the blanks with their own conditioning. 

And maybe seeing a lot of that toxic masculinity in media content was unsettling because of how women get treated in that content, and how they in turn might feel in those shoes. But if a MAN, even if it’s a heavily female-coded man, were to undergo that...well, it’d be easier to appreciate those tropes and dynamics they’ve been force-fed to believe were arousing, hot, desirable. Especially if they can have two hot men in it. They can enjoy that self-created taboo, bypass their own discomfort and insecurity, and project it onto a type of person different enough to suspend their disbelief and maintain that difference, even if they’re pumping that guy full of all the typical misogynistic tropes and experiences they’re not comfortable having directed towards them and other women.

In short, it’s a way to get off on heteronormative norms/tropes, using another as a vehicle in order to keep up their cognitive dissonance.

Of course, this eventually spilled out into the Het fandom (makes perfect sense, since many of the a/b/o originators and proponents were het women), and then worked its way into Femslash fandom by piggybacking on g!p in order to meet the necessary criteria for PiV sex. 

Just, in this case, you necessarily shift some of the puzzle pieces around. Trans women take the place of the “alpha”, acting as an acceptable vehicle for a toxic masculine cis man, since lesbians aren’t into men. Even if the trans woman is generally written, in nearly every way aside from part of her body, as a toxic cis man. The original a/b/o’s “Bitch Male”/Omega Male is swapped out for the  Omega Female, usually a spunkier, more in your face version outside of romantic/sexual contexts in the media content, but let’s be real here, she’s still by and large submissive when it comes down to it. 

In a world where more wlw grew up feeling predatory for their attraction to other women, for feeling sinful, for being rejected from female intimacy het women enjoyed with each other after coming out, etc., it’s pretty common for a lot of lesbians to lack initiative, not be able to read or communicate romantic/sexual cues between each other...to essentially be “useless lesbians’ as the joke goes,and to feel isolated and undesirable. 

So writing a F/F fic where some hot woman modeled in the image of some hot cis woman pursues you? Takes the initiative sexually/romantically? Doesn’t beat around the bush, but is blatant? Who can’t control her lust around you? Who can give you the perfect nuclear family you’ve been conditioned to want in order to feel value in our heteronormative world, but were told you weren’t worthy of or could never feasibly attain? Who gives you a sexual encounter you have some education in and some emotional stake in due to common conditioning of PiV sex > all else? Who can give you plausible deniability for a number of contexts due to a lack of ability to explicitly consent? etc. etc.

Like, yeah, that’s going to feel comfortable for a lot out there. That’s going to seem pretty hot/arousing. It’s a way to get off on the norms and expectations thrown on women in society, but in a way that lets them distance themselves ever so slightly from men by shifting it from text to subtext, explicit to implicit.

Don’t just take my word for it, though. Here’s a few snippets from one of the most popular g!p/omegaverse femslash writers (if not the most popular) that help illustrate how/why this trope has found an audience

Why Do I Write G!P?The elephant in the room. It arouses me, but it’s also a form of self-comfort. I grew up in a very fundamentalist home. Women being with women was at first unspoken, and then derided, both by my church and at home. I felt insanely guilty for my attractions, so I developed ‘cheat codes’ to deal with it.

It was okay if the woman I had sex with in my dreams had a penis, for example. It was okay if she forced me to have sex with her. It was okay if we basically simulated heterosexual sex.

Because of my childhood (which included conversion therapy), I found myself falling into heterosexual roleplay patterns, at least sexually. It was a lingering thing from my childhood.

It’s still there, and I know I’ll never be rid of it.

I associate penetration with power. You know, being steeped in sexism from an early age turned some problematic thoughts into kinky lemonade. And since I’m a femme sub, taking power away from the top by ‘penetrating’ them can ruin the mood for me. I mean, I can write power bottom scenes with the best of them, and I enjoy them, but… *shrug* if I’m going to write omegaverse or g!p, someone’s getting fucked, and it’s not the top.

There are rules to a/b/o. There are specific reasons it’s sought out, read, and created, and that’s why it’s hard to imagine a version of it without those harmful elements, because the trope requires them for the audience to be satisfied.

It’s why all gay male a/b/o fits a pretty specific pattern. it’s why femslash a/b/o fits a very specific pattern. There’s nearly no deviation as a rule, because there are so many parts that have to be in play and functioning in a specific way in order to get the desired result. 

I could go on for hours about this, and the above is all a pretty damn simplified take of what’s going on in a/b/o for it to exist in the way it does and meet the needs of the audience, and I’ve already written a lot about this in the past, so I’ll try to cut it short here.

I probably should’ve said this earlier: Lillian is non-binary. Pronouns are they/them. They don’t tend to get overly offended at being called Lillian by their parents (which includes our world’s Alastor - which, again, is another tipping point) and Ada (who sometimes calls them Lily), but with other people reacts the same way Alastor does when someone touches him: ready to cut a bitch. 

(I may accidentally use she/her sometimes so sorry about that and any confusion xD)

okay, more on the story (before i get back to working on my personal statement xD)

Ada will eventually inherit her mother’s holy weapon (a bladed cane gifted by Alastor)

The only other person who can touch it is their mother. Not even Lil can touch the blessed thing (this is on the premise that holy objects burn demons). 

Lil used to be able to touch it, but as they got older and more proficient with their abilities, that faded. 

Lil is most involved with the cannibal district in Hell, partially through Rosie who is still trying to bring them over to the dark side. 

Charlie is not very happy with it, but she recognizes demons who are, more or less, semi-trustworthy as she’s been dealing with them through Alastor for decades. 

There were worse options, tbh. 

Lil ends up learning to cook at a very young age from another demon that is semi-trustworthy  (but was guilty of murder-cannibal crimes in life so, um, ya knOW?). 

They’re actually really good at it - one of the reasons they’re so good with knives

Lil isn’t a cannibal themselves (unlike Ada who IS for purely dietary reasons) but does learn to cook multiple types of demon meat (mostly imps or mindless-helbornes)

They suck at baking though (partially because you can’t really get good baking ingredients without some posturing/improvising and Lil doesn’t care THAT much)

On another note, Ada can’t stand eating most anything other than meat. She’ll gag on most other foods (which results in a lot of finagling on both Charlie and Lil’s part to find what Ada could and couldn’t eat). 

If she does force down something that doesn’t agree with her palette she gets violently ill for days after. 

Lil has a side job that involves doing some catering for different high end clients/parties. 

Kind of how they get involved with the Hotel in the first place. 

They’re one of the servers for the official opening. Rosie pretty much volunteers (throws) Lil to Alastor without Charlie/Lottie knowing. 

Lil just wants the money. That’s all. They don’t expect to be accosted by Daddy Lucifer (who has been keeping tabs on them) to keep trying to talk and get into their personal space (short of straight up hanging off of Lil).  

That, of course, gets Alastor’s and canon!Charlie’s attention. 

Alastor and Lil interacting is actually... kind of funny? Like, their powers are incredibly similar; however, they function on slightly different wavelengths or frequencies (due to originally being from different universes). Their powers flare up unintentionally around the other and things have a tendency to break as a result

Being around each other causes a sort of feedback loop to occur between the two of them. The energy/power wants to flow in between them (what we see as Alastor’s “audience” and Lil’s more subtle shadow puppets) but, again, due to being on slightly different frequencies the energy doesn’t flow easily and creates imbalances.

This shows in Alastor’s radio background changing to different channels without him meaning to. 

Lil’s own channels become louder but are more prone to be staticky. 

Both their shadows act up and sometimes switch without the other noticing. Lil has taken home Alastor’s shadow once by accident and vice-versa (it’s as bad as you’re thinking considering how I see Alastor’s shadow as sentient while Lil’s isn’t) 

If they were in sync, it would result in them have their powers boosted.

Wow anon u rlly just asked my number one actual fave™ as always prepare for one big post hhvhvhjvn 

Like ive always liked edgy teen characters I think they have a nice charm to them and I like the conflict they cause for other characters ( best example for this is besides Lena is needletail from warriors tbh!! Theyre rlly similar in cool ways) 

Lenas like different for me tho she isnt just some dumbass teen messing shit up and everybody be like "broooo stop being so immature :\\" I mean she is that but she means more to me as a character again abt to get super personal ( what can i say my favs are my favs cuz I relate to them personally or wish I was like them lmao) but I relate to her like a lot haha I dont have anybody in my life like magica is to her in all but I can relate in a very toned down way of how controlling she is and how she doesnt get a bit of space ik that isnt the main aspect of it but god I still felt that u know I also relate how magicas keeps being like "u cant have friends lmao its only to get scrooges dime stop getting attached" again not exactly the same but a certain person in my life is always telling me friendships are dumb they never last blah blah blah shouldnt bother to pursue any for this reason and its just annoying okay anyways tho enough abt me im srry this is so long its basically me just venting :') 

One of the best things abt her tho??
