Just a Star trek Vulcan vs Human anatomy, something something, blah
Am the only one who really wants a show, or like small skits, about comparative anatomy and physiology of humans and vulcans? In a way that looks very realistic and is accurate to actual human anatomy.
I watch anatomy videos a lot, with real cadavers, and I think about this often; how interesting and entertaining it'd be if they could compare to vulcans.

This is so sweet, I could scream 🥰
Sometimes when I’m down, I remember that scene at a convention when Leonard Nimoy and De Kelley are reading fanfiction to the audience, and they pause at a scene to remember the destroyed Enterprise and place their hands over their hearts
and De does a double-take, skips over to Nimoy, and fixes his hand so it’s on his lower ribcage, where the vulcan heart actually is, and then goes back to his spot and remarks something like “I should know I’m his doctor” and continues on.

I once stumbled upon some obscure piece of canon that described an ancient Vulcan ritual of standing naked in the rain to absorb rainwater.
I immediately pictured Jim accidentally finding Spock performing one of those... "rituals" while on a shore leave.
And, of course, I couldn't keep myself from drawing it!
Based on this post by @lesbianrustcohle and this fic by Raven_Knight!

Prompt: Spock’s hands are injured and since Vulcan hands are so sensitive he can’t help but cry about it
"Shit," Jim is saying, over and over, as he digs the salve out of his bag. "Shit, hang on, shit—"
Spock, for his part, is biting down on his cheek so hard that he tastes blood, his hands held out in front of him and shaking. The burns aren't severe, but the pain is enough for his telepathic bonds to be burned themselves.
The storm rages outside the cave they've found themselves in. Lightning had struck as they were running to find shelter, causing a fire. Jim was trapped and Spock didn't give it a second thought when he pulled the burning debris off of Jim, his hands scalding from the embers.
"Jim," he croaks out, his voice shaking despite his best efforts. He doesn't know what he's asking for.
Jim uncaps the salve, hands steady as he scoops out a dollop. "This will hurt," he says. "I'm sorry."
Spock grits his teeth and lets out a small cry of pain as Jim, as careful as he is, painfully applies the salve to the burns dotting Spock's fingertips. Jim then wraps each finger in medical tape, wincing at every hiss and sharp breath that Spock takes.
"The comms," Spock manages to get out, "are they—"
"Still down because of the storm." Jim sits back on his heels, face pale and drawn. He wipes his forehead with his arm. "Damn it, Spock. I'm sorry."
"It's of no consequence," Spock lies, biting down harder on his cheek. The pain is mounting; not just the burn, but the lack of feeling he has in his hands. It's like he's been thrown into the dark with nothing but fire and pain to accompany him.
Something in his face must betray the true extent of his pain because Jim suddenly looks stricken, eyes wide. Spock realizes, belatedly, that there are tears streaming down his cheeks.
"What can I do?" Jim asks, his voice steadier than the panic Spock sees in his eyes.
"I cannot—" Spock sucks in a breath. Tries to steady himself, unsuccessfully. "Without touch..."
Jim nods, like he understands. With Spock, he always seems to understand. "Your telepathy. It's dependent on your hands."
"Yes. It's..." Spock squeezes his eyes shut at another wave of pain. "The burns are painful. But the lack of connection to my environment may be... worse."
Jim grips Spock's wrists, which are undamaged from the flames. It's like a balm over Spock's wounds; an anchor in the darkness. Jim's expression is intent. "What about my touch? Does it help?"
Spock could sigh with relief. It's like he's found home again, after groping in the dark for so long. "Yes," he says, gratefully.
Jim's hands grip just a fraction tighter, his fingers imprinting into Spock's skin. "Then I will continue to do so, as long as you need it."
The pain is already receding, Spock falling into the comforting warmth that is Jim's presence. "That may be a very long time," he says, a little more honestly than he would like.
Jim smiles. He releases one of Spock's wrists, but only to run a thumb across Spock's temple. "Forever, if you need it," he promises softly.
#i hope this is ok!!#i turned it into hurt/comfort because i'm a sucker for it lol#spirk#space husbands#my writing#thank you so much for the prompt!!!!#also if this totally fucks up the current facts on vulcan anatomy my only defense is that i have not kept up on current st canon AT ALL

Everyone who makes jokes about Vulcan hand sex is ignoring the REAL Star Trek hand sex species.
The Ocampa.
#Kes Voice: Neelix we have to hold hands for six days it's the only way to have a baby#Kes Voice: -looking at anatomy books for the first time- Hmm weird!!! <- no pussy haver#star trek voyager#st voyager#I do like the idea that Neelix is now really skilled at hand sex#and he hears about Vulcan hand things and is like 'this could be my in' <- unaware it doesn't work like that and it's about telepathy etc#HEHEHE god Kes looks so deranged in this episode#Kes: Why don't you want to hold my weird sticky hands.#you may ask how does Kes pee if she has no pussy? one very small hole intended for liquid waste disposal and nothing else#I'm sure the writers intended for it to be like 'we have to be holding hands WHILE having sex' but you know what? I disagree.#<- my entire explanation. I just like things being more alien.#especially since most star trek species look necessarily (for the show) humanoid#Ocampa pon farr is just feverishly holding hands for six days straight while staring at each other and lunging for any bugs you spot

The Spock gets made human episode of Strange New Worlds is truly abysmal about missing its own point. It wants so badly to make a point about the othering of humans by Vulcans but shoots that point repeatedly in order to have Spock experiences emotions jokes. So then at the end when everyone is giving their little humans are worthy speeches it's like they came from an entire different plot line.
#star trek#strange new worlds#star trek snw#spock#snw#there should've been more jokes about Spock choking on water because his anatomy is messed up#or about how at first everyone is worried about missing internal organs because his anatomy is different now#give that bitch an appendicitis or carpal tunnel or something#you can't keep having a man say vulcan's experience stronger emotions than humans than have dude crumble because he smells bacon#get it together

[ID: black and white scan of a poem titled Beastiary 1, written by B. L. Barr, most likely a page from an old Star Trek fanzine, the poem reads as follows:
Like a cat
Your graceful covenant
Your slender body
Hair
glossy and dark
Bearing
aloof and regal
Moving
silently
Sharp senses
Ears
tapering at the tip
Eyes
see all
and reveal
little.
Tell me
my feline Vulcan
whose touch
can make you
relax
and even
purr?
Perhaps....
mine?
below the poem is an accompanying art piece, a drawing of Mister Spock lying naked on his right side with his back facing the viewer, right arm against the floor supporting his upper body, his face is turned so that only his left profile faces the viewer. a black tail is extended from his tailbone, his legs taper into anatomically correct black cat paws in place of feet, left leg slightly bending at the knee to be in front of his other leg. his clawed left hand is extended to hold his left calf]

My main problem so far with classic trek is that all of the women are written to have their relationship with a man be their primary characteristic but also that's the problem with most side characters who never appear again so I guess it's less of a 'they write women bad' problem and more of a 'they need to use uhura and rand and chapel more' problem
#random thoughts#star trek#but also im kind of tired of the main conflict of most episodes being 'woman falls for terrible man'#besides that im having a great time thinking about vulcan anatomy👍

Felt like doing this quick little art of old married Spirk enjoying their lazy San Francisco morning. I somehow find the idea of Spock tangling his legs with Jim's in bed very exciting.

So, if you could settle an argument for me- Regarding "most fictional aliens look like space bugs":
Is that accurate, because it's kinda hard for human artists to come up with something sufficiently and plausibly "alien" without taking inspiration from bugs (leaving aside more abstract aliens that are just like floating minerals, etc.; also Vulcan-style humanoid aliens)
Or is that just an impression, because most people think of *anything* with sufficiently different anatomy from ours as a "bug" - as demonstrated by the fact that slugs, earthworms and insects are called "bugs" even though they are no closer to one another than we are?
While possibly not "most," it's common ENOUGH that it's kind of a fair statement I think; a lot of aliens have a buggy way about them, like spindly limbs, antennae, tentacles too if you think of mollusks as bug-adjacent. I'd like to see more aliens that are more abstract in shape; I think when designers want to look at nature for inspiration, but they don't want to accidentally recreate something too much like an Earth species, they could look at plant parts, protozoa, even body organs. I'd also like to see more aliens that are just shapes. Like an orb or a disk or a tube.

hii this is really random but i'm writting a paper on star trek fanfiction from the 60s/70s and i was wondering if there were any fics youd recommend? are there any like iconic, keystone fics that are really significant to the fandom? (i'm having a bit of trouble sourcing pre-internet fics)
Hi! I'll try to help the best I can but I am by no means an expert- in fact, many people who end up seeing this may have better/more information so I'll extend it to any of them to answer as well :)
Disclaimer: many of the following links contain nsfw content!!!
Here is page 1 and page 2 of what might be the first known k/s fanfic published in Grup fanzine (1974). Grup is credited as being the first Star Trek fanzine with adult content. This fic, A Fragment Out of Time by Diane Marchant was vague enough that it had to be clarified as k/s in a later edition, but the author did do so.
Spockanalia is always a good source for early fandom. It is the earliest and best preserved example of fanzine content (beginning in 1967 before the second season had even aired). I'd definitely say that makes it influential! So much more can be found on the internet archive and on fanlore. Copies of Spockanalia found their ways into the hands of many people involved in the show, including Roddenberry himself.
Gayle F is a prolific fanzine artist (one of my favorites) for k/s and is also influential to k/s writing. She was behind the Cosmic Fuck Series (yes really lol) which begins with Desert Heat (1976) in which Spock prematurely enters his second Pon Farr with only Jim available to him. This is the first mention (that I know of) of Spock's "double ridges" which are still a fanon element of his anatomy today (fanlore link here).
Alexis Fegan Black is another name to know, but is actually the pen name for author Della Van Hise. She did a lot of her work in the 80s and beyond, so I'm not sure how helpful this will be, but I think she's very influential. You may know about her licensed trek novel Killing Time (1982) because the first edition was recalled for being way too gay (changes between the two versions are best documented here imo).
Jenna Sinclair was very influential but again, a lot of her works came a little later than what you're looking for (note: ao3 does NOT have the correct dates, you'll need to find those separately).
A few more links to throw at you:
List of Star Trek Fanzines
List of Star Trek SLASH Fanzines
Captain's Log (1968)
The Crewman's Log (1967)
Spock's Showcase (1968)
Spock's Underground (1968-71)
The Sensuous Vulcan (slash zine, 1977)
Thrust (slash zine, 1978)
I hope all these links work and at least something I mentioned is helpful for you!! Good luck! I'd love to hear about your research if you're so inclined to share :)

I could see Tuvok saying this to Tom just to fuck with him. 'I appear to be going blind.' Tom goes through the medical journals but can’t find the answer.
He finally asked the Doctor, who rolls good eyes and tells him that Vulcans have two sets of eyelids, and Tom is a terrible nurse.
He gives Tom three books on Vulcans anatomy to read by the time he comes in his next shift for a pop quiz.
10/10 funniest Spock moment is when he accidentally tells everyone he went blind bc he forgot he has an extra set of eyelids.
he ACTUALLY thought that HE, himself, was permanently blinded before going, 20 minutes later, “OH FUCK! I can see again”
normally that’s something Spock would do just to fuck with everyone but this time he also had his ass handed to him because he couldn’t remember HIS OWN NUMBER OF EYELIDS
best Vulcan ever. I know Starfleet is still telling stories about him to this day
#not during the year of hell#just when tuvok is annoyed with him and wants him to go away#knowing perfectly well that tom will be curious and have to look it up#and spend days researching vulcan anatomy for no bloody reason

Superbat Week 2024 - Day 3
Xenobio Extravaganza
A/B/O | Alien Biology | Kryptonian Diet
(I am a massive xenobiology nerd, you have no idea the monster you've unleashed)
So I’m perpetually annoyed by the fact that Kryptonians look exactly like humans, have the same blood colour as humans, are reproductively compatible with humans, etc. despite being from completely unrelated planets
So I thought, what if Kryptonians developed a very mild form of shapeshifting as some kind of survival mechanism
So Kryptonian children slowly but surely grow to almost exactly mimic the dominant species of whatever place they grew up, or, like, the species they were raised by
So a Kryptonian raised by Skrull or Vulcans or wtvr would grow up to look like those species instead
It’s not a perfect explanation but it’s the first one that’s made any sense to me
Anyway, the illustration is just more of my headcanons on what remaining Kryptonian traits Supes might have, written in the style of Anatomy of a Metahuman, ie I tried to write it like these were Bruce's notes
Text from the image under the cut
Kryptonians produce far more varied pigments than Humans, and as such have a wider variety of hair, eye, and even skin colours: Kal has blue-pigmented eyes and hair a similar iridescent black as ravens and crows
Vestigial pointed ears, though what the ancestral purpose was, I can only guess
Kryptonians seem to have some similar membrane to the Tapetum Lucidum, giving Kal far superior night vision, though it must make it difficult for Clark to have his picture taken with flash
Very prominent canine teeth, Kryptonian ancestors were definitely meat-eaters, and his teeth seem to be actual bone, unlike humans
As muscle mass can only increase through repeated micro-tearing and healing during regular and strenuous exercise, Kal doesn't actually have that much bulk since he'd have to bench press an aircraft carrier every other day to "get big"
Lack of nipples would indicate non-mammalian ancestry, but the presence of a belly-button suggests Kryptonians were a placental species. The only alternative would be that Kryptonians lay eggs, which is...
...I have seen this man knowingly and willingly consume metal multiple times. I have no idea what is going on in here, but I fear asking him if I could get in his guts could be misconstrued. (Here's what inspired this point!)
From my translations of some Kryptonian texts, their society had wildly different concepts of gender than Humans, as well as indications that there was a wide array of how their biological sex presented. Perhaps my theory about egg-laying isn't so far-fetched...
