Out of curiosity, how do you think of "realism" in xenofiction? I ask bc of course I prefer when stories make full use of the characters' species rather than having them act exactly like humans would, but I think some people take it too far.

For example, I saw someone write off Wolves of the Beyond (which I have other issues with but not the point) as "wolves in name only" because the pack structure is different than the small family units that real wolves have, even though the characters being wolves is essential to the story otherwise. I've also seen a lot of Warrior Cats fans complain about the fact that real cats physically cannot shrug, roll their eyes, laugh, cry, etc, so it's disrespectful of biology to include it in your fanfiction (even though there are much bigger fish to fry in Warriors canon not treating its characters like actual cats lol)

Of course there are some things that ruin suspension of disbelief even for me (Tallstar's Revenge tunneling system my beloathed) but I feel like a lot of people don't want any level of anthropomorphism or fantasy in xenofiction and I don't really get why.

I feel like to add the disclaimer that I'm not really well read in xenofiction as I'd like to be (and that's what I'm trying to use this blog for, to encourage myself since I want to get more into the genre) and that this is just definitely my biased take lol

I think there's definitely a line to straddle, one reason I get the complaints with Warriors is that it doesn't really utilize their animal cast in an interesting way. They're tiny humans, it being a non-human perspective really doesn't play that big of a role in the story. But in the end, I think it's ultimately the story you want to tell. Secret of Nimh and Tale of Desperaux would not work if they were written in the same way the Fox and the Hound and Raptor Red are. Even Watership Down, which I generally would say tries to capture realistic rabbits, allows more fantastical elements because it allows more interesting drama and thematic writing.

and, with that, i think warriors being realistically written would actively make it worse at this point. it would get in the way of the drama. warriors is a story about political drama between factions and soap opera levels of family and romantic drama. a realistic clowder system and cat behavior just wouldn't let them tell the story they want to tell.

So no, depending on the story being told, I think straying away from realism is fine. The unrealistic behaviors and fantasy shit in Warriors doesn't take me out of it because, well, it's Warriors! A damn cat lifted a tree once!!! So I've never really cared or agreed with the complaints about it being unrealistic, the entire premise of the books tells you right away these are not going to realistic cats lol

That said, related to a post made before, I can understand why there's some frustration with stories that are inspired by Warriors but seem more so interested in commentating and fixing Warriors than making their stories their own.

cli-fi - this genre delves not only into climate change itself, but issues relating to the sun disappearing, or the world freezing. I remember seeing a shifter somewhere saying that she shifted here bc in her previous reality climate change was getting really really bad.

social sci-fi - focuses on how humans interact and behave in a futuristic setting.

planetary romance - exploration of different planets + romance, especially with an alien. Also characterized by distinctive extraterrestrial cultures and backgrounds.

data gothic - cyberpunk x gothic horror; characters encounter malevolent AI beings, digital ghosts, and corrupted data streams.

cosmic agriculture - genre focused on growing plant life in outer space or on different planets. Can also including breeding alien organisms (bacteria).

psychic noir - solve crimes in a world where memories, emotions, and thoughts could be hacked, manipulated, or weaponized. I think I'd make the memory thing extremely hard to do, since if it was too common I think it'd cause way too much havoc.

eco-metamorphosis - kinda like alien stage, but if you'd like, it could be less dark. This genre centers around earth being colonized by aliens, but the goal isn't to reject these changes, but rather to coexist with the other species.

This would be incredibly boring in this reality, but imagine if you were a barista in a fantasy or futuristic reality... you'd come across a lot of people without much effort or mental strain.

epistolary - a story told exclusively through fictional letters, newspaper articles, emails, and even texts. This isn't necessarily a genre of DR, but I think it'd be really interesting to guess/assume the plot of a DR through short snippets of letters or texts.

What do you do that inspires your writing (like YouTubers or tv shows, your pick!) and creative outlets aside from miraculous Lady bug? If ya don't mind me asking :3

so i pretty much write exclusively for ml bc nothing has ever really inspired me enough to write stories about it, besides my ocs, whose stories just sort of live in my head lol. but what motivates me to write are other people's stories, like books, fanfiction, comics or even really creative oc bios. if i read a really good one im like "ooooh i wanna write something cool now too"!!!

but also the reason im able to write so much so quickly is bc I've trained myself on the art of Word Vomit. basically just writing whatever i can, knowing i can always come back and edit it later, because it's WAY easier to edit something and make it pretty vs make something pretty straight from scratch

but i like to draw other things besides ml. i really love drawing animals mostly, but people are fun too! i have a soft spot for drawing ponies and furries tho lol

my most beloved joop and mason... i am taking the opportunity to info dump about my ocs (BEWARE OF CRINGE)

for those who dont know, goop and mason are my favorite original characters that i dedicate all of my daydreaming to. they originate from a fateful sims 4 session of 2019 wherein the name generator suggested "goopy" and i made him go do gay freak stuff with some npc named mason. now i think about them everyday and i cant turn it off!

they have relatively set personalities, certain themes and ideas, but i kinda just play Touys with them and insert them in a variety of stories/universes/scenerios/whatever because im unwell. they have to kiss in all of them

THE WORLD(S)

outside from various self indulgent one-offs ("one of us is a vampire" or "theres only one bed and we have to share...!!!" kind of shit), there are TWO primary worlds:

set in a modern (2000s?) colorado. a small town bartender, mason, meets goop, who is just a dragon and the only anthro animal guy thing. no one questions this, its not that important.

an original fantasy world. mason is a knight (in universe, these are more akin to an independent private eye or muscle for hire, rather than serving a ruler or anything like that). when sent to capture the sought and elusive beast of the woods, the dragon, they end up developing a relationship instead. this one is usually better for imagining AMVS to edgy music with blood and stuff

GOOP

a flamboyant stoner dragon man. reads confident, but actually extremely anxious and always masking. manages his anxiety with weed, probably to an unhealthy degree. impulsive and scatter brained. few if any friends. all he wants is to belong somewhere.

his hobbies include ecology, photography, daydreaming, collecting

i became really attached to joop over the years and sort of stumbled into drawing him to depict myself... so he just ended up becoming my fursona too. i consider his Fursona Edition and Original Character Editions to be separate entities with some overlap. i shant be elaborating further because i dont really understand either.

i have also spent significant time developing goops species and it's evolutionary development (re: im unwell) b ut i think that is a little outside of the purview of this ask...

MASON

a rather sociable man in his early to mid 30s. partially raised by his neglectful father and partially raised working on a ranch. well liked in his local community, but struggles with actual intimate relationships and understanding his own emotions. so deep in the closet he doesnt even realize hes gay. usually acts as a straight man to goops dragon nonsense. feels nice and warm to be around...

his hobbies include journaling, hiking, athletics, video games (he likes animal crossing), trying different beer and spirits

canonically he's a human, but occasionally i will depict him as a dog furry bc humans are hard to draw

there are other characters that exist in these universes (lawrence, avery, holly, eden, etc.) but they are not as well developed currently.

MUCH MORE THAT COULD BE SAID BUT i am already supremely embarassed so imjust gonna stop here. tldr gay people in my head i like them a lot :)

Bucky Bucky and general DC heroes (MCU/DC crossover) (I started writing half my muses on MCU/DC crossover forum sites, including Bucky! I'm throwing him back into his roots)

Batman I just think Bucky meeting Batman would be very funny, especially in a professional setting and especially if canon divergent post-Endgame. Bucky having war flashbacks to being chased through Bucharest by a man dressed as a cat because 'so many superheroes are furries.'

Wonder Woman Bucky and Diana based on that one fan plot where Diana was involved, in some way, with fighting during WWII and they met back then and then meet again in the modern day. bonus points if Diana thinks he's his own grandson and he doesn't correct her.

Superman idk Bucky and Superman would just be kinda wholesome? also if Superman mun comfortable, Bucky would totally have a crush on Superman. you can't convince me otherwise. also Clark and Bucky as a ship would be 'pure of heart, dumb of ass' in that order and it makes me giggle.

Other any of the Batfam would also be fun but there's every chance they get unofficially adopted. new dad! new dad! new dad!

I don't know that many DC heroes. girl help. who else is there? idk but I want them!

Bucky + Spider-Muses I once joked about Bucky adopting various Spider-characters and I still want it. Bucky is the ancient, morally ambiguous MCU Batman on this blog, in that he will not stop fucking adopting people, but at least Bruce usually adopts children. Bucky'll adopt a 30 year old. they're still 70 years younger than him so they're fair game.

Bucky + Nebula the sheer comedy value of these two being friends is worth the gymnastics to figure out how they'd spend enough time together to become friends.

Bucky + Dmitri from 2012's The Winter Soldier comics by Ed Brubaker I so badly want to explore the possible dynamic between these two. I don't want to spoil the story he's from, even though it's been over a decade since those stories came out, but I want him. I wanted to see more of him before that story ended. please.

Wag Wag and X-Men Characters Wagner Himura is an X-Men oc that, in his entire time on my blog, has never threaded with an X-Men character. it can be any character and any verse. I don't care. I just want him to speak to other mutants, man.

Logan specifically, I would like Wag and Logan threads. I always picture Wag as a general pest when he starts working at the school, like throwing water balloons filled with speed potions at people that annoy him kind of pest, and I get the feeling Logan would either hate his guts, like him because he does not discriminate between students and teachers, or be very cautious because he doesn't know Wag's limits while Wag's just like 'hey ;D I don't actually find you attractive but if flirting means I don't get stabbed, I'll flirt. ;D I'm high as a fuckin kite rn lmao ;D'

Charles Xavier Wag and Charles would also be funny because of the aforementioned 'high as a kite'.

Brotherhood any brotherhood muse in his brotherhood verse would be nice, too. Idk how he got into the brotherhood in that verse and I want to explore it. I just miss writing Wag, lbr.

OCs tbh any OC. let's yeet our x-men OCs together and see what bad ideas they come out with. it'll be funny. I'm willing to make up places that they can go through a portal to, as well.

Bam and X-Men Characters Bam has an X-Men verse in which he vibrates particles when angry and I just… I miss Bam being chaotic. I miss Bam being a mess. she's gotten too collected and I want disaster Bam back. I don't have specific preferences for this one.

Wag and Bam Basically, both Wag and Bam (in his X-Men verse) have abilities that can/are activated by emotions. With Wag, he has more control over his abilities and thus the chances of anger doing anything is low but not zero. If his anger is doing anything, it's a silent, 'scorched Earth' kind of anger that mostly shows in things moving telekinetically. With Bam, his power is exclusively activated by anger.

I just want that in a(nother, in Bam's case) thread or plot. It'd be fun.

Mattie and Avengers/SHIELD/HYDRA Mattie worked for both SHIELD and HYDRA so I would like to establish some kind of relations with SHIELD and HYDRA muses, but she also sent records to the Avengers after the fall of HYDRA and began torturing/murdering HYDRA agents who survived The Snap so like……….. 👀

also Avengers meeting her after The Blip or whatever dumb bitch shit The Snap 2: Electric Boogaloo is canonically called would be… like she a gremlin in the swamplands. she's a whole fuckin cryptid by that point. I want her ex-coworkers to meet the cryptid she's become and be like, '... ayo? you good?' and her to be knee-deep in swamp water, dragging a body, like, '... yup!'
