I had this AU archived off my accounts for a few years, but I'm thinking about it a lot more these days so I'm digging it up for sketches.

This is Kudari from Codebreaker, functionally the starting antagonist for the story when Emmet accidentally collides with him and takes parts of his body.

For a little debrief, the main idea of Codebreaker is that Emmet discovers that he exists in a false reality, and that there is a parallel plane where all of the instructions for his reality exist. He finds his way to this plane by accident after walking back from another lonely day at work, and is hellbent on learning how to manipulate it in the hopes that he can recover Ingo with that knowledge. Kudari is his own set of instructions, who he partly dismantles, allowing him to actually interact with the code. This leaves a hollowed out shell that starts trying to find his own way to get his body back from Emmet.

I'd been thinking about the Beta Submas leaks which lead me to sketching him again. Here's the first rough warmup sketch I did with a fight between him and Emmet.

From there I just started reworking his old design to be worse 💀

Kaeya had always been an efficient and hard-working individual (he had to be to support Diluc in the background as his brother rose thru the ranks after all).

He has so much free time because he completes all his work way ahead of schedule. And if he still has enough time, he adds more to the workload in secret.

And once all of that was done and over with, he makes time for everyone. He has to. He feels as if every moment has to be given to someone else.

No one knows how he does it. No one has to know.

Every mission has a dozen strategies in line, and every battle plan is made with efficiency in mind. His perfect record will not be tarnished. He can't risk it (even if it baffles others that he would willingly activate a ruin guard just to prevent a failed mission. Jean disagrees with his methods, but Kaeya can say that the results say otherwise)

He needs to be quick.

Efficient.

Perfect.

And so he comes and goes like the wind.

Kaeya values time because he knew every second counted. He can't just stand there as if he were frozen. Time could run out in an instant.

Kaeya had only been late once his entire life.

He'd rather he never be late ever again.

It took one day of being of being imperfect for everything to fall apart. On that tragic day...had he gotten there on time... then maybe...

" Come on, let's get moving, traveler. We're not frozen in place after all. " Kaeya teasingly says. He stiffles a giggle at the traveler's exhasperated sigh.

"Yeah yeah, we've heard enough of you calling us a slacker. Can't you be a bit more patient?" Paimon whines at him.

Kaeya snorts, but acquiesces, hiding the shaking of his hands at the thought of being idle.

He imagines hearing a clock ticking.

Kaeya knows that that is his own problem. He tries his hardest to relax as he waits for the traveler to finish whatever they're making on the alchemy table because, seriously, it is supposed to be a relaxing day. There's nothing major going on, and his schedule is once again empty as intended. What's the hurry?

Kaeya taps his foot on the ground as he waits. He wishes he could take his own damn advice when he tells others to relax.

James T Kirk struggles with ageing, which is just fascinating as a character trait. He goes from being the youngest Starfleet captain to their youngest admiral, and (in the books I’ve read and the motion picture novelization) really seems to have difficulty accepting that he’s older and what that means for him as a person and as a professional in a job where growing older means ageing out of the aspects of the job he actually enjoys.

netflix's the dragon prince: hey, we're here to ride the nostalgia wave from those of you who never emotionally recovered from avatar: the last airbender. we're gonna give you 7 seasons of a similar but insanely watered down formula depicting 4-5 different factions forced to work together for the fate of their world, while grappling with familiar moral quandaries such as:

Something something the idea of a character all about death and the dead and the fragments of previously living beings spirits. A character who finds passion and care and respect for the end of life and the small bits that remain after life has finished. Someone who finds humanity in someone needing to find their rest and going out of their way to help them get there regardless of gaining nothing. Meanwhile, the antagonist of the game essencially has many of his actions driven by the guilt and regret of in some ways creating death and dying. Because what could be more terrible than nothingness. And how could it ever be forgiven that he created the end of an existence that was supposed to be endless?

ffxiv garlemald discourse is so funny because people will go "ugh people just cant stand it when things aren't black and white" and then you look at how the empire are portrayed in stormblood and shadowbringers and its like hm. that seems like a pretty intense and accurate display of violent imperialism to me! Wow I wonder why people in this day and age may find it hard to feel sympathy for them or even hate them on principal. god its such a mystery.

the games like 50/50 to me on how it tackles these themes because I actually like the garlemald arc in EW, I think it has a lot of horrific and powerful scenes depicting how self destructive fascist propaganda and beliefs are, but I also think it doesn't go far enough on some fronts. the garleans' xenophobia is most notably and obstacle to getting them to accept the contingent's help, which is what they're there to do,

but there's never an admission of harm from any garleans on the uuuuuuuuh massive amount of war crimes the nations around them are still suffering from they're just kind of like "we misjudged you...but you actually wanted to help us all along" like yeah thats great now can we get you all some deprogramming because you keep talking about returning to your prime and glory days and I think we need to unpack some stuff you really SHOULDNT return to. im not even really talking about EW proper but the patches where things are a bit more chilled out and people are recovering.

It feels like they wanted to have their critique of imperialism and also have things end with the beauty of human connection and reaching out and these things just don't mesh well because hey a lot of your modern day audience is not gonna like having to treat people yelling xenophobic things at the cast and your character with kid gloves after you showed them hours and hours of the awful things these people's beliefs have done. especially in the present day hoo boy.

Black Doves is unique in that its a spy thriller with christmas-y filler. Like yeah there are is thematic depth in Helen/Daisy's as well as Sam's identity, that being whether or not they are more than their covert, cloak and dagger jobs, and even some commentary about british politics in particular about tory politics, but all of it is so buried under unnecessary flashbacks that tortuously spell out character motivations and the characters needing to acknowledge christmas every few minutes. It felt very much like Netflix was pitched a two hour screenplay that they demanded a rewrite of that prolonged the whole affair to a six part miniseries and that shoved a strange unnecessary epilogue in at the end. I think the show could have had a poignant ending if Helen walked out among the corpses left in the wake of the bizarre conspiracy she just unraveled and was forced to acknowledge that she did it all for a man who approached her with less than purely romantic intentions and that she consigned her closest friend to a life or strife and stress and that she is still trapped in a role that she both loves and hates in equal measure. But instead it ends with her inviting a hitman to her christmas dinner and a surprisingly feel good montage of every one enjoying christmas that feels totally out of step with the dark, bloody ending and the painful absurdity of all of the killing being for a crime boss's embarrassing fuckup of a son
