To me Agent Stone represents that small shed of humanity Robotnik has left, the one he denies but can't seem to let go of. That irrational attachment and desire for companionship.
And I think Sonic 3 will put that humanity to the test.
#sonic movie 3#sonic movie#robotnik#dr. robotnik#agent stone#I don't think he's redeemable or anything (he loves being evil too much and Stone is on board)#but he's not completely detached#Stone is what anchors Robotnik to the rest of humanity#and now with Gerald...well....we know what Gerald usually wants at this point

dabihawks are a perfect ship like they're a blue-red dynamic they're character foils one was the son of a hero and became a villain one was the son of a villain and became a hero they're heavy-handed societal extremes they're perfect opposites they're the exact same they're child soldiers they're animal motif coded there is so much there symbolically to justify the ship but if you asked me the real reason i enjoy them? they are insane. like they are both so freakishly mentally ill and they're dysfunctional and toxic and traumatised and they bug the fuck out of each other and they hate each other and they understand each other's morals better than anyone while still fundamentally opposing each other and i want nothing more than to put those two freaks in situations just to see who explodes the other first
#and through it all the 'good' saviour one is actually the most fucked. like WHAT#dabi: ive killed upwards of 30 people. im an arsonist and a terrorist. i am open about all of it in fact i own it#hawks - mindless government assassin who has and will kill if he's simply ordered to he doesn't even have to believe in it#in fact he doesnt seem to have any of his own beliefs he's entirely subservient to the commission he's completely domesticated#and detached from any seeming guilt for his actions: wow that's so fucked. i can fix you though#like hawks.... look inwards baby you cant even help yourself#they're DERANGED i adore them i need to see them beat the shit out of each other over a 300k slowburn <3#dabihawks#mha#mha spoilers

Day 4: Aristaeus
Interpretation notes and trivia below the cut!!
All rise for the entrance of my president !! Honestly, of all the figures and characters that were up for debate when I first started thinking about this story and who I wanted leading the charge Aristaeus was not one of them. Originally, I'd always known that Asclepius and Orpheus would be worked in somehow - they've always been favourites of mine in terms of children of Apollo (even if Orpheus as the child of Apollo and Calliope is less popular classically) and I expected my pick for the third child of Apollo to be involved to be similarly mortal like Iamus or Tenes but the more I looked into Aristaeus the more I fell in love with him! Ultimately, he's meant to be both a foil and a reflection of his father - a boy who grows up thinking his father's footsteps would always be warm only to realise that following in them would lead to death and destruction. While his status as a rustic and hunting god is still important here, Aristaeus' interpretation is much more focused on his connection to the Etesian wind and his quelling of the dog star Sirius which is why his hair in particular is so long and spiralling. All in all, more than any other figure I've chosen to interpret and represent in my work Aristaeus is the god I hope more people get interested in and research! I think there are a lot of important stories in his various myths and travels and I definitely want more people to discover and fall in love with them as I have!
Some fun trivia:
Apollo's firstborn son. Because he was born mortal on account of his very mortal mother, Apollo immediately took him to Olympus to eat ambrosia to begin his transition into divinity. Apollo would continue to feed Aristaeus small amounts of ambrosia and nectar for the next ten years until the child fully shed his mortal skin and was reborn as a god.
Due to the nature of making mortals deathless (namely the fun part of the process where they are completely remade and lose their mortal memories) Aristaeus spent most of his early life with his mother and siblings where they all pitched in to reteach him his family, his hobbies, his favourite things and ultimately how to live and love. Aristaeus was very attached to his maternal family because of this and his early acts of ingenuity were mostly born from his wish to make things easier for his family.
Aristaeus is the only one of his children Apollo hand raised full time. In those days, Aristaeus adored his father and believed him completely upright and blameless, the true face of a benevolent deity and the kind of man he aimed to be when he was full grown.
They would later have many bitter arguments and conflicts, the first and perhaps most impactful of all being their disagreement over Actaeon, Aristaeus' firstborn son. He wanted Apollo to teach him stating that it was a normal thing for a grandfather to do but Apollo vehemently refused to have any part of Actaeon's rearing, stating that he was not his child and that it was highly inappropriate for him to educate another god's son. When Actaeon later dies, Aristaeus blames a not insignificant part of that on Apollo - something that only worsens when he learns that it was Artemis who cursed the boy and that Apollo was always aware Actaeon would die young.
Spends most of his time travelling from place to place. Doesn't really like Olympus and prefers to spend his time minding animals or tending to fields. Is on wonderful terms with Demeter and Persephone and often makes decadent exchanges of olive oil and preserved meat for exotic flowers and fruit for his bees.
Big fan of wind and percussive instruments. Never liked the kithara because of how finicky it is and far prefers the hand drums and reed flutes of his mother's country. Exceptional dancer.
Will sell prized cattle for high quality and highly unique jewellry. Doesn't much care for gemstones but is an absolute gold fiend and has a massive collection of bracelets, anklets, nose and lip adornments and rings. Has never been north enough to hit India but got a ton of rare and different adornments from his Phoenician in-laws when he was married to Autonoë.
Hates dogs but doesn't mind wolves. Not a big horse fan either
Unlike other winds, he cannot transform into various animal forms. He's close enough to the Anemoi that he keeps up with the gossip but he's only really friends with Notos. Gets along poorly with Zephyrus whose preference for pretty youths has often led to them getting into physical altercations when they were younger. Aristaeus still holds a bit of a grudge about it.
Has a big stupid crush on Dionysus which is embarrassing because Dionysus also put him out of a job. Due to Dionysus' relative youth, he feels a bit conflicted about such feelings - mostly because Dionysus is on extremely good terms with Apollo and Aristaeus doesn't want him to get burned.
Despite kinda despising his father, Aristaeus is a pretty decent eldest brother and regularly keeps in contact with a lot of his siblings. He often delivers mead, flavoured honey and olive oil and uses it as an excuse to chat and catch up. Currently in a bit of a tiff with Asclepius because he's worried about him and his family.
Favourite colour is the rich gold of purified honey, favourite food is lokma and his favourite time of year is winter.
#ginger draws#pursuing daybreak posting#words cannot describe how much I love this man actually#other things Apollo has done that completely ruined his relationship with his firstborn include but are not limited to:#protecting and defending Aristaeus but letting Idmon die#giving Orpheus hope that he could recover Eurydice and not apologising for making Aristaeus immortal then raising him mortal#knowing how painful it would be to watch his siblings die#he firmly believes that Apollo knows a little bit of everything and could avert so much more pain if he just#warned people better#In a lot of ways Aristaeus still idolises his father - it's just that now he thinks of him as unfair and cruel instead of perfect#Apollo is content to let things be he's there when Aristaeus needs him but he won't force him to be around him#Aristaeus' intense reaction is why he started being more distant about raising his kiddos too btw#He can never detach himself emotionally but he tries not to be too permanent a fixture in their lives so they can learn about him#naturally from other people instead of growing up thinking of him as infallible or someone who would do things in their best interest#Apollo's beholden to Fate first and foremost - even his children can't change that#aristaeus#october art challenge#greek myths

Aroace Riz real but also Fabian is SO clearly in love with him and Riz has no idea
#honestly fabian might not even fully know yet#a core part of fabians character is that he is so deeply afraid of rejection that he is never going to pursue the people he actually wants#i do think he likes Maezy a lot but i think he only knows how to pursue hot toxic women that will discard him at a moments notice#which in a way protects him from ever actually dealing with heartbreak#is he a gay man dealing with comphet? ehh maybe#i could see that#but I think the vibe i get is more about how he has these platonic friends he completely adores and is fully devoted to#and then in another category he has the people that he does not have any actual attachment to that he will allow himself to pursue#and crossing the boundaries in between those two categories or allowing himself to pursue someone he really cares for#would require a level of vulnerability he is in no way prepared for#in his home life he has an emotionally detached mother who is well liked but kind of floats through interactions on a surface level#and a father who is extremely concerned with fame and glory and attention but doesnt seem to have ever stopped moving in his life#genuinely fabian does not know what a safe loving partnership would look like#and we see him constantly oscillating between emulating his mother and his father in relationships#but just beneath the surface is a little boy who wants so badly to cling to his loved ones so tight and be squeezed right back#with no way of knowing how to even ask for that if he wanted#and riz is his best friend in the world and he knows on some level that riz is simply not interested in having that kind of relationship#not on the level fabian needs#but that also makes riz a safe target for these feelings of devotion#theyre just friends! just besties! fabian never has to reckon with his own loneliness or harmful patterns#if he channels all of his yearning for closeness onto his best friend#anyway! this boy needs therapy#fhjy#fhjy spoilers#fabriz

Game Night with Douglas
Click for better quality
What happens after Douglas leaves for a second
rambling about their outfit in tags
#a dnd continuation! more like an excuse to redesign their outfits and throw in douglas with them#if you compare the gameover/wendigo art and this one it looks like they grew up lol#for mandark i wanted to stick with his original design but combine his two iconic outfits into one with a fantasy vibe :D#his collar and pants is how i tried incorporating it and i honestly love his white collar but kinda sad i didn't know how to add his tie#a ruby gem gifted by dexter was placed instead#the last robe looked like a hoodie so i changed it to fit his cape from his og design to have more black on the outfit and point up collar#tried to add as much M's i could without looking tacky such as the gold one underneath the ruby which is also detachable#that allows him to take off the robe with ease#there's also a hidden gold m near his collar if you squint#mandark has M spilt on the back with golden lining and underneath everything is a long tight turtle neck#he wears a vest inspired by his leotard patterns which i love that it was caught and earrings with his signature M dangling from his glasse#lastly his staff which is inspired by his gun it's very multipurpose and his crystal ball can be removed and emit magic particles#mandark was supposed to have his elvish print on his clothing but i couldn't find a language alphabet for it#for dexter he's completely inspired by his fusionfall counterpart#his lab coat is lined with golden accents and wanted to add tech to his outfit so i add metal and circuit shoulders to honor his lab itself#the mirror of the shoulders is detachable and multi purposed such as a storage area and communication device similar to mandark's staff#i figured i'd keep the leather like previously for mobility and comfort compared to pure metal shoulders#he keeps a potion near his side for emergencies#then there's his necklace “MD” in dwarvish#i brought his wrench which wasn't considered much last time#dexter can press the button in the middle and quickly expand and vise versa for portability#quite honestly i gave douglas a basic outfit since i don't think he stands out in a fantasy world#his outfit is inspired by his originial clothes too mostly the colors#he does have a lil quirk of engraving D into things like puss in boots#sorry i made you basic human archer douglas LOL#im happy with it it literally took days researching and careful consideration of their designs haha#dexter's laboratory#dexter's lab#dexdark#flame draws

like yes totk is technically much darker than other zelda games, but is there any emotional weight to it? when the plot consists of these out-of-context cutscenes that you can collect in any random order at any point in the game (or not at all) with zero impact on the plot or link himself? somehow the silly toon zelda game managed to make toon king daphnes of hyrule's sacrifice more heart-wrenching than king rauru of hyrule's, and the toon guy was literally a boat for most of the game
#loz#finding the memories is completely optional. does not change the story at all.#you can't just put disjointed scenes of dark things happening in a storyline we're not part of into the game like optional collectibles#and point at those like ''see look how dark our game is''#maybe you should've let us play some zelda sections to develop more of an emotional investment in that storyline#or maybe given link the protagonist of your game an emotional investment in that storyline#does anything dark even happen outside of those cutscenes#that like. means anything#puppet zelda could have been really creepy if link wasn't standing there like 😐 the whole fuckin time#in botw it made sense for link to be more emotionally detached bc he was an amnesiac and it was part of the tragedy#still could've explored his character more (like in the original japanese) + shown more expression at the end to complete his character arc#but it was a more minor complaint in botw#in totk it's like does link even give a shit abt anything that's going on

i think... while i disagree with the notorious choices in terms of adaptations of Lolita I can understand to some extent a dilemma inherent in the text as it is (unreliable narrator and all) which is mainly that HH is by his nature a charismatic and attractive character in-the-fiction, by which I mean women are attracted to him in-universe, and he is able to garner various people's trust and so on and so forth, you know to the point of Dolores' mother proposing to him and all of that stuff. He doesn't "seem" suspicious or shifty to the outside observer.
The benefit of the written word and it being from Humbert's POV is that you do not see his charisma or handsomeness the way the other characters do, you see all of his ulterior motives and schemings inside of his own head. And even through the veil of his attraction to her you can see that Dolores is a child who he has power over.
I think if I were tasked to try to do all of that (the book) in a visual form the approach that makes the most sense to me would be to keep the camera off of Dolly as much as possible, make it largely a child POV camera angle even w/ narration from HH and being from his point of view as a work of fiction— and also to use a man who is not just handsome, but also very physically intimidating, by which I mean incredibly tall and capable of turning his expressions into grotesques. also like, very blue-eyed probably. pale blue eyed.
Obviously this still kind of betrays some of the element of like, he's not supposed to look untrustworthy necessarily but to a child in this situation shouldn't he look kind of, well, monstrous? And then when viewed by other characters he is simply affable, charming, perhaps a little mysterious or opaque but very much the "charismatic learned man" whose opinions are valued by society and who no one would ever suspect of a thing. because that's a constant problem IRL obviously. oh he was always such a smart young man. so promising. i can't believe he'd ever do such a horrible thing. blah blah blah
and then when the camera is inevitably on the child, I think it would be to emphasize the child's point of view, that Dolly is very young, frightened, sad, and isolated. That she cries herself to sleep every night. and honestly the book itself has those kinds of moments anyway even through HH's eyes where he has these brief, supposed instances of conscience, but obviously doesn't change himself at all, or stop.
idk i was just thinking about it this morning... how can this be done, how can that be done, etc. etc.
#wired: casting Jim Carrey (not really. i think he's a great actor and he is actually attractive but the typecasting is hard to detach)#(but i mean. count olaf? great example of the charm vs the monster albeit in a more cartoonishly exaggerated way)#ftr if you haven't read the book and if you are able to read the book (given the subject matter) i think it's worth a read#i would say if you are ''comfortable'' reading the book but i think that would be a kind of self-defeating suggestion#it's an inherently uncomfortable book lol#nadia rambles#absolutely despise the cover treatment of my paperback copy fwiw. completely missing the entire point of the book.#(it's the one with a closeup of a girl's mouth)

there's a verse in louise glück's "a myth of devotion" that goes like that:
He wants to say I love you, nothing can hurt you but he thinks this is a lie, so he says in the end you’re dead, nothing can hurt you.
and it makes me think of how bruce can't come to terms with jay being alive, and how he refuses any kind of emotional engagement with that fact. this verse encaptures one of possible reasons for this refusal so well. it's a form of self-preservation; he feels helpless when confronted with jay's anger and pain. if jason is alive, it means that he failed him again, that he already lost him again. and bruce can't live with that. denial, then.
you're dead, nothing can hurt you.
#this also mirrors how he distorted jason's memory to re-imagine him as doomed for death within these 3 years#he can't take this responsibility unless he completely detaches himself emotionally and treats jason like a “soldier”#or a lost cause that he did his best to save.#grief is objectifying. grief is always about the ones who remain#cemeteries are for the living#dc comics#bruce wayne#jason todd#jay meta#wretched mirrors
