“The Final Victory” shall work a little differently to regular StC stories in that, although there’s four parts, each of them are included in this issue as one long story, which is a collab between Kitching, Stringer and a whole team of artists. If you’re coming here from IDW or Archie, you’re probably thinking that’s usually how stories work in those comics anyway and you’d be right. But for StC, which is usually broken down into smaller stories, this is the first (and only? I think?) time the whole issue is one long story

Sonic explains the plan that I’m sure a few of you figured out already - the electromagnetic pulse knocking out all the computers will stop Robotnik from being able to turn the Emerald Hill Folk (& Knuckles) into a supercomputer. Hell, it’ll wipe out Robotnik’s badniks across the board and give the people of Mobius the biggest chance to fight back against him that they’ve ever had

It does leave the big problem of Super Sonic, however. But at least now all of Sonic’s problems are in one place. And he can go home! Say goodbye to the Chaotix for this issue, but we will be seeing more of them in future

This is one of the Super Sonic images I first think of whenever I think of him. Pretty sure they make it into a poster at some point? Either that or I just put this page on my bedroom wall as a kid

Speaking of Sonic, the man himself is back! Though there’s too much going on to celebrate that just yet

Also, I had a moment of thinking it’s neat to see Vermin in Elson’s art style that got me thinking… have we even seen Elson draw Shortfuse yet? I’m sure we will at some point, but it’s kinda funny if Vermin got there first

We’ll get a longer update for Knuckles in the next part of this story, but for now, here’s the reassurance that everyone’s okay

The team confirms their suspicions that all the badniks are offline (I think Vermin managed to sneak away?). And now… their next biggest problem is here :) 

Look, I just love all the pages of Super Sonic wrecking shop. I don’t want any harm to come to the Freedom Fighters, but just seeing this guy getting to shoot lasers out of his eyes just feels like enrichment for him

So yeah, the Super Sonic problem has sort of solved itself for now? If you’re wondering where he’s going, then we’ll get to that later in this issue as well

Sonic, however, is more concerned with the lingering threat of Robotnik. He heads off to the next part of the story, leaving the citizens of Metropolis Zone in celebration, even if Amy is wise to be cautious

I don't think Robotnik ever saw Stone's affection as genuine. He's used to people only valuing him if he's useful. His own bosses call him a freak, yet they put up with him because of his "perfect operation record". He isn't even shocked when he learns the goverment erased him, he expected it and had a contingency plan ready.

He keeps calling Stone a sycophant and a barnacle, because why else would someone stay with him if not to gain something? Clearly, Stone is just a suck-up wanting to ride his coattails. And Ivo is fine with that! He gets his ego stroked and in return Stone gets a slice of the world-domination pie. Mutually beneficial!

This symbiotic relationship gives Ivo a sense of control and ensures that Stone won't abandon him like everyone else. It also keeps him detached: of course Stone waited months or him to return from space, that's his job. His admiration is inevitable, and meaningless.

Ivo develops a genuine, irrational attachment to Stone, one he's able to rationalize as just being transactional. Those emotional walls shield him from the fear of abandonment that comes with caring for another person.

Except...even after Robotnik becomes a liability, Stone stays. There's no benefit, no plans of ruling humanity, not even a paycheck. Yet despite everything, Ivo tries to keep the old boss/employee dynamic going. He can't fathom the idea that someone would stay for anything other than convenience.

Then Gerald shows up, and for the first time Ivo allows himself to put down those walls. As an orphan he had built up this idealized image of family that he thought he could never have. People will use you then toss you aside when convenient, but family? Family is different. Family will always be there for you and love you no matter what. Family won't abandon you.

And suddently Stone's grovelling is no longer necessary. Why would he need someone who just pretends to like him when he now has all the unconditional love he's always longed for? That's obviously why Stone got so jealous, it couldn't have been real concern, he was just afraid of losing his comfy position as the lapdog of humanity's new king. Between a sycophant and family, the choice felt obvious.

And, of course, Gerald turns out to be just like everyone else in Ivo's life: just another person trying to get something from him. The second he stopped being useful, he was tossed aside.

His image of family is once again shattered, but those emotional walls are already down. Now that Ivo experienced that betrayal he was so afraid of, now that he's about to die, he's finally able to be honest with himself.

Looking down on Earth, he realizes there had only ever been one person on that blue marble who actually cared. Someone who had always been there, even when there was nothing to gain. Stone had never abandoned him.

But he had abandoned Stone. He tossed him aside, just like Gerald did to him. Now that he's able to understand how Stone felt, this is his last chance to make things right.

In his final moments, with nothing to fear, Robotnik puts down his emotional walls and opens up as best as he can. Stone had done so much for him, asked for nothing in return, and now it was his turn to do the same. Ivo helped save the world, not for recognition or convenience, but simply out of love.

Stone had always been a sycophant to him, yes, but he had also been a friend. A sycofriend.

The funny thing about Dr. Robotnik being called Dr. Robotnik in the English localisation is that "Robotnik" is a real surname, but the localisers apparently had no idea – they just took the English word "robot" and stuck a vaguely Russian-sounding suffix on it because it was the Cold War and "vaguely Russian" was shorthand for "evil" in American popular culture. Dudes tried to lazily come up with a name that evokes "evil robot guy" and accidentally made him Polish.

Honestly, the fact that Agent Stone became such an impactful character for the Sonic Movie canon is insane.

We know that Agent Stone was intended to be a throwaway side character, quite literally just an extension and accessoire to Dr Robotnik for him to express his character with. Agent Stone didn’t matter, he was there to enhance your impression of Dr Robotnik and his personality.

I mean look at this, in the first movie, there are clearly other Agent-like characters following Robotnik everywhere he goes. Not military, Agents. Those are ALL supposed to be Robotnik’s agents.

Even if they are not directly under his command, they are „with him“, his entourage for at least the first half of the movie before they all, including Agent Stone, disappear when Robotnik goes off to do his own thing (destroying that hedgehog).

For all we know in the vacuum of the first movie, Agent Stone and Bot never met before the day this movie takes place and Stone just happens to be assigned to personal bodyguard duty on that particular day. The point is that Agent Stone could have just vanished after the first movie and a good chunk of the general audience for these movies wouldn’t have minded at all.

But Jim Carrey was like „Hey, Jeff, I like this guy, he’s a great counterweight for my character, I think we should expand his role.“ and a few of us from the audience said „Hey, Jeff, we like that fruity assistant guy, we think he and Robotnik should kiss.“ and Jeff said „I agree“. And now Agent Stone is Robotnik’s only real friend and he got his own action figure.
