And I only engaged with you because I was initially curious why you'd want Katara to punch "Azula/Mai" which does give the impression that you see them as two sides of the same coin. I wondered if you were referring to Mai before getting together with Zuko or after, so I asked. Would you say curiosity killed the cat?

This is really going out on a limb. Mai never actually helped Azula capture Zuko, she's a part of Azula's team as the princess would habe demanded regardless (as we saw with Ty Lee), but it's speculation to say if she had run into Zuko what would have happened. I also want to point out this is pre their relationship, at best when she had a crush on him, and before she does develop as a person (even though you don't like that development). And, even with that, we can guess different things on what would have happened if Mai and Zuko ran into each other in Book 2, who knows? And if you're by chance referring to Ba Sing Se, Zuko returned to the Fire Nation of his own volition at Ba Sing Se. Mai can't be blamed for that either, if that is what you're indirectly referring to also.

You say she tries "bullying" Zuko back into a relationship. This is rather semantic. I can't say the Dai Li "peeing" line is exactly hitting. Seems in line with Ty Lee also praising Azula in that scene for her speech. As for ordering servants around, that is to cheer Zuko up, who was enjoying it initially, and she visibly deflates when it later doesn't work because he's concerned about the war meeting. And as for your other point, Zuko is in an abusive environment with Azula and Ozai, yes. Mai is too, considering she even says that she does "fear" Azula. This is why she initially, early on, acquieces to Azula quite easily when Azula says that unconvincing "braid" lie, only able to send her a dirty look behind her back. Over time this escalates to yelling "You want me to express myself? Leave me alone!" after Azula mocks her childhood trauma in the Beach. There are a number of indications that Mai herself felt trapped. Her parents shut down her opinions in her formative years for her father's political career, she was dragged to Omashu clearly without wanting to be there, she at best can only disobey Azula behind her back. Azula even says in Azula Alone (if we have to keep talking about the comics) how much her 'friends' should be grateful a princess gave them the time of day, so there is an unequal power dynamic where Azula is controlling, mocking and abusive. Mai and Zuko's situations aren't that different in ways, and they both resent their situations, which is another part of why Mai really doesn't have much hang ups choosing Zuko. They actually have something in common.

You can compare Azula and Mai, talk about "dark humor", but it feels rather pointless when they are so different, not just not on the "same level", fundamentally different.

Fallacious argument with a seeming tinge of condescension. We never see a scene where Mai attempts to kill Zuko, because it doesn't exist. If you reread my post, you would also notice I refer to Mai's role as a villain earlier and so I don't need to "admit" something as if I'm keeping something under wraps. As for your conclusions on how we should treat characters that were villains and never villains, that's your opinion of course but not a hard and fast rule in any way.

The writing is ridiculous. We can't just give Zuko a free card for bad comic writing, yet rip Mai to shreds for bad comic writing. It would be a double-standard, almost opportunist. I think the intentions of the writers of the original show and the writers of the comics don't synchronise, which makes all characters' actions in the comics dubious. "He wasn't a real threat" is ridiculous, but it's the sort of ridiculous I would expect of Gene Yang's reasoning considering. She beats them up and leaves in Rebound. She is on Zuko's side in the argument with her father, telling Ukano he should have been "grateful" to Zuko, being derisive to Ozai loyalists and then beats them all up. I very much doubt they wrote that finale scene with the idea Mai's a Tanke or Hitler Youth and that's what she's thinking, same with the scenes in the show finale. Mai also later supports Zuko against Azula and Ozai loyalists. Ukano complains about how he essentially hadn't managed to indoctrinate her to the "duties of Fire Nation Citizenship early enough" because she is not acting imperialist or fascist. Post-War Mai is definitely not a fascist, or even imperialist at this point, she is not baying to extend her country's border through colonisation or military force. She didn't even seem to really bay before really. She is against the New Ozai Society that wants to do so and thinks they should shut up. She has also spoken out against Sozin and Ozai in the Ashes of the Academy comic, saying "The less we uphold from Ozai and Sozin's reign, the better the Fire Nation will be".

Do I think the writing could be better at points? Sure, the show had flaws, the comics have giant holes. But I really can't find your specific opinion of Mai that impelling. But you can continue to believe what you feel. I feel I'm done with this conversation, so I actually won't respond beyond this point.

Coming off Tumblr and Twitter for a few days because the amount of hate Arcane is getting especially Caitvi is just upsetting to me.

Yes there were aspects that could have been better and I don’t wholly disagree, but what I do disagree with is passing opinions as gospel, attacking the writers and creators of this wonderful show and claiming they are now a horrible ship and it makes me sad to see all the negativity.

This was a ship that had really helped me over the past 3 years and just to see it be completely shat on by individuals for one thing or another is heartbreaking to me considering we were given so much.

We got a fucking animated lesbian sex scene for crying out loud.

Could you imagine that happening a few years ago?

Yes the writing and pacing could have been better in parts, but pitching ships against each other (I am sorry but you just cannot compare Javik, Timebomb and Caitvi to each other they are so far removed it’s silly) but the representation that we got and the story telling as a whole was amazing.

Some are quite literally making mountains out of molehills and making more of a scene compared to when Vi said “Cait, I don’t fucking care” when she was told she slept with someone else.

Would I have liked to have maybe seen the Caitlyn and Vi arc go in a different direction? Absolutely. But I am not going to sit behind a keyboard and bitch about it, slate the writing team who worked for 9 years to create this for my own self inflated ego.

It just makes me so sad to see that something that meant so much over so long is being ripped apart over such things. Especially when all I see when I come onto social media is everyone being so fucking negative.

Gale drew a deep breath, then another. The hour was strikingly early, earlier than he would usually be awake. His hands were always steady, but there was a bit of weakness as he lifted the fine tea cup to sip, setting it back on the matching dish with a minuscule clatter. He cleared his throat and stared across the table at Tara.

Tara, who sat ridged and unrepentant in the wake of this morning's... occurrence. The end of her tail flicked subtly against the elaborate table cloth but with enough force to resound through the table. She refused to face Gale, instead watching out the window.

Much as he wanted to just let this go and let bygones be bygones, Gale was setting a boundary. The soft shuffle of the single parchment sheet between them gently broke the silence as he pushed the page toward Tara.

"I know we have had many differences of opinion in the past," he began. His tone was steady, reassuring. "...and I am certain there are many more still to come. I have no doubt that this can be settled amicably between us, as things always have before. That's what old friends do. This... issue... does not have to come between us. We can agree to disagree."

Tara spared him a brief sideways glance with a soft chuff under her breath. Her eyes shifted back to the view outside.

"Hmph. This is highly uncharacteristic of our friendship- our relationship, and entirely unnecessary, Mr. Dekarios! This is a blatant performance on your part and you know it," she grumbled. Another flick of her tail toward the parchment.

"I'll admit, you are correct that this is rather performative, but not unnecessary," he replied with a tap on the paper.

Tara's eyes flashed as she glared at him, finally turning to face her friend.

"ENTIRELY unnecessary! I have known you since before you were big enough to lift your first quarterstaff! I have been your friend and confidant AND your single greatest supporter, shy of your esteemed mother!" Tara's paw swatted down on the edge of the parchment that Gale had pushed to her side of the table. Her ears pinned sideways as the feathers of her wings bristled. "Since when do we have need of- of- PAPERWORK?! Of CONTRACTS between us?!"

"SINCE I WOKE FROM A DEAD SLEEP THIS MORNING WITH A STRAIGHT RAZOR HOVERING PRECARIOUSLY OVER MY THROAT!" Gale's outburst echoed through the kitchen, his chair screeched as he bolted to his feet and threw out his arms in frustration.

The two stared at each other for a moment before Gale recovered, running a hand over his face and balancing the other on his hip. Tara, to her credit, was unfazed and accustomed to his temper.

"Since..." he started again, "Since you decided that taking matters into your own hands included imposing your will on my own grooming habits!"

"It was just a shaving blade, Gale."

"I was ASLEEP. The blade could have slipped-"

"Slipped? Oh, please! I've been conjuring Mage Hand since before you were even born--"

"Tara, sign the paper."

"You canNOT be so serious. I am NOT signing any-"

"YES, you are! I told you time and time again that I am perfectly happy-"

"It looks absolutely unbecoming of you-"

"TARA, JUST SIGN IT." Gale sternly spoke over her in his most adept disappointed-teacher voice. "You are my friend and companion. Your presence in my life stands above many others, above the whole of Toril and beyond, but this is a matter in which I have told you repeatedly that you have no say! Now... read over the agreement and sign."

Another moment lingered before Gale straightened his robes and sat down again. He reached for his tea as he nudged the quill toward Tara.

"Read, if you please," he reiterated.

With a sigh Tara relented, her wings slouching minutely as she leaned over the page.

"Ahem... I, Tara, the undersigned... a resident and esteemed family member of House Dekarios... really, Gale?" Tara glanced up at him. The slight smile she couldn't hide was met with the upward twitch of his eyebrows over the tea cup. "...agree to the establishment of boundaries, specifically in relation to the grooming and preferential upkeep of those in my charge. This includes, but is not limited to, one Professor Gale Dekarios - Master of Evocation and Mystical Theorems Department at Blackstaff Academy, Savior of Baldur's Gate, and present Head of House Dekarios."

Gale couldn't stifle the laugh, but did try to make a convincing sound of clearing his throat as Tara glared up again.

"Go on," he urged patiently.

"I... henceforth will refrain from any physical imposition or actions upon his person in regard to cosmetological matters of barbering. I acknowledge competency of his personal hygiene and will not interfere now or in the future. This includes..." she sighed again, having her crimes clearly scrawled out in ink between them. "Mr. Dekarios, this is silly-"

"Read it," Gale grated.

Tara swallowed her pride and rushed through the last few lines. "This includes swearing that I will never again use any means, magical or otherwise, to shave or alter his appearance. Especially not while he is... asleep."

Another flick of her tail and the quill on the table righted itself and drifted over to sign her name at the bottom of the page. She let it settle gently onto the table before looking back at Gale.

"You know I would have never harmed you, my dear," she muttered before hopping down from the table and making her way toward the door.

Gale exhaled a slow breath and nodded. "I know. Regardless, the beard stays. And no more rude awakenings!"

Ummmmmm. I don’t think Dumbledore was a bad guy? I think, of anyone in the series, he was the most arrogant, though, and an incredibly skilled manipulator. I also think he genuinely cared about people. The reason he fucks up so bad is because he loves Harry too much—and his fatal flaw is that he is terrified of love as much as Voldemort is. Love destroyed Albus Dumbledore’s life in every way. Some people say that he got Sirius killed on purpose—I disagree. I think he was genuinely remorseful about it. The reason he paints Sirius so maliciously at the end of OotP is because it IS Dumbledore’s fault that he died, and Dumbledore can’t handle the truth how much hurt he’s caused Harry.

Anyway, I love Dumbledore as a character. I also think he’d be fun to hang out with and I’d smoke a joint with him. But I wouldn’t trust him.

rant about the D&I charter in regard to being lgbtq+ below the cut but I do discuss the punishments for queer people in some countries F1 races in and that has the potential to be triggering, so.

TW: mentions of the death penalty & torture

look i love that hamilton’s mission 44 was able to help with the D&I charter that the fia/fom have recently signed, but that doesn’t help the fact that there are 195 countries in the world, and of those 195, only eleven have the death penalty for being gay, and yet f1 races in THREE of them.

of ONE HUNDRED AND NINETY FIVE countries, 65 punish homosexuality explicitly, and f1 races in four of them (Qutar: death penalty, UAE: death penalty, Saudi Arabia: death penalty, Bahrain: semi-illegal). Beyond that, in Hungary, Azerbaijan and likely the USA, queer people face discrimination and in the case of Azerbaijan, imprisonment and possible torture.

jesus. it’d be so easy to race in countries that just don’t criminalise being gay, let alone give the DEATH PENALTY for it, but no, he just has to accept the money, and then greenwash the whole thing with some bullshit about renewable jet fuel and a instagram post with some pretty words.

what happened to the bullshit ‘we race as one’ little slogan they used to have plastered everywhere? vanished in 2022, with Domenicali saying they needed to change “gesture to action” to sky sports. i haven’t seen that happen. the ‘we race as one slogan’ was designed to encompass multitudes more than just lgbtq+ rights, fair enough, but they co-opted the rainbow branding for it, which is iconic enough that by itself people associated rainbows with lgbtq+ rights. for them to have used that branding to clean up their image and sell shittons of tickets and merch, to then do absolutely fucking NOTHING for lgbtq+ people within the sport is fucking disgraceful, and the worst kind of rainbow-washing.

ralf schumacher has done more for lgbtq+ people in the sport than the fia/fom ever has. by coming out whilst alive and famous, and by being a race winner, he has single-handedly given any young kid who is queer and wants to be an f1 driver a figure to look up to. he’s created a possibility for every young queer kid out there who loves f1. hell, i hate his opinions most of the time, but that doesn’t prevent me from standing behind the opinion that he’s one of my faves now, even when i disagree with him. (which is often.)

but it SHOULDN’T have to be down to individual ex-drivers. fucking hell. the fia is meant to KEEP THEM SAFE. no driver will be able to come out whilst driving at the moment, even if their team and fom/fia were fully behind them, because they wouldn’t be able to race in some countries for fear for their life. fuck that. i mean, i’d love to go into motorsports journalism, but i face the prospect that i wouldn’t be able to be open and public about my sexuality if i did make it, for fear of being imprisoned etc in what would essentially be my workplace in some countries.

it’s just so fucking frustrating. i get that a lot of people have an issue with it due to the racism still kind of baked into the institution of the sport, although i think an argument can be made toward it being more of a classism problem than specifically a racism problem (aka more white kids get opportunities because more of them are rich. not JUST because they’re white, although there is still that discrimination) but at least they aren’t in a situation where if they go to certain countries, they are risking being legally killed for their sexuality.

(yes, obviously, police brutality and racism can make it fucking risky and awful for poc to go to some countries, because they have a higher risk of being ‘accidentally’ killed. Qatar has stones people to death LEGALLY for being gay. these things are not actually the same)

and this charter does fuck all. i’m sorry, it probably will help for women and poc in motorsports, and for that i’m grateful, i truly am. it’s been long coming, and it’s fantastic that it’s here and hopefully will be used to actively help increase diversity & inclusion in those areas. that does not, however, negate the fact that NO mechanic, engineer, scrutineer, hospitality worker, driver, broadcaster, photographer, team principal, commentator etc can come out and be able to go to these countries without fear. none. THATS what the fia/fom should be fucking focussing on, eliminating fucking death threats to it’s workers.

I mean it's fine to say that "nothing felt like a challenge" and "they just dominated everything and there weren't any stakes" but like. it's not as if they weren't up against huge threats. they lost the mall fight. the last stand was an onslaught of enemies. they fought a dozen dragons from an airship. the fights were hard. they're just really good. they've had very good dice luck in general this season and are all very high level and highly specialized. fig is gonna beat deception and performance checks. adaine's gonna figure out the arcana. riz is gonna succeed investigations. like. for some reason their strategical competence and wisely picked abilities are. a downside? a disappointment?

the thing about d&d that you need to remember is it's first and foremost a game. it's mostly random and it takes you down weird paths and you're playing to have fun with your friends. the dice are literally telling the story that it's their time, it's their year. they've struggled enough. they've trained enough. they're good at what they do. and in my post about the academic/domestic/personal stressors being the focus, d&d doesn't have any other system to work them out than rolling different skills. that's what d&d is. brennan set specific challenge levels for different tasks and the players strategized to prioritize which abilities they were strongest in. the challenges were there. and the players rose to them. they were both smart in their delegation of responsibilities and lucky with their dice rolls. of which, both are foundations of d&d.

don't mistake them being good players and getting lucky with there being no hardship. just because they smashed through the wall, that doesn't mean the wall wasn't strong. they were just stronger.

Not to be a bother but… I agree with @ganeshpnf on their side. Leah is an excellent and very talented actress, like I’m talking about very talented. I disagree on some of the points the user said far above @ganeshpnf but I do agree with a few. Usually I hate sharing my thoughts and opinions because I get frightful that others will attack me. But I am going to say something about this quote “Leah is our Annabeth” and I disagree. Leah is Annabeth on the show, not in general. It’s the same thing with Alexandra Daddario, she is Annabeth in the movies but not in general. It’s the same with musical actress too. Annabeth to these three actors are roles. They’re not “the character”. They play the character but they’re not Annabeth themselves.

to start this is about a post I saw about Leah playing Annabeth Chase in the Percy Jackson show. Someone in the comment section was complaining about it and saying that they think a white person should be casted for Hazel if there's ever a live action heros of Olympus. This person claimed that if race has no meaning when casting a black perosn for Annabeth, then why would it matter for Hazel?

here's where this person is so incredibly wrong that it confuses me on what their brain is used for if not to make a complete thought. Hazels race was one of the most important things about her backstory

Hazel was a woc in there 1940s she went to a school for colored children. She legit experienced segregation. The whole reason that she had a connection to Leo is because she went to school with his grandfather sammy and the only reason she knew sammy was because of that school for colored children. Just that is enough to tell her that yes her race does in fact have a meaning and isn't something you should change

then the person in the comment section started talking about Frank.. then Leo and then piper. Basically they ranted on and on about any poc character

Let's start with Leo now. I'm bringing back the hazel point because again the only reason that he and Hazel had a funky connection at the beginning of moa is because of that school for colored children. Leo's Hispanic heritage is also important when concerning how his life with his mother was up till he died. One of the reasons he ran away from his aunts house was because she was religious and constantly called him the devil.

what about Frank? Well his Chinese heritage connected him to Poseidon which made him related to Percy which isn't massively important but you know it's a plot point so I see no point in getting rid of it

and piper? One of the first things we find out about piper is that she is bullied for being cherokee. The FIRST thing we see of piper interacting with characters besides Jason and Leo is her experiencing racism. It is insane that some people think that's just a thing that could be thrown away. Her Cherokee heritage also relates to her main character development in the trials of Apollo and lots of her "wisdom" is old cherokee stories her grandpa would tell her

and tell me one fucking moment in the series where Percy or Jason's race was important. Other than them being Greek/roman because they're all Greek and Roman so shut up

oh but since everyone's complaining about Annabeth being black in the show that must mean that her being white in the books is SOOOOO important

Annabeth Chase being black is probably one of the best casting decisions ever, and I say this knowing that race wasn't the main thing when casting. Leah is the perfect person to play Annabeth and I will die on that hill. She has the script determination and the emotional range that makes her the perfect candidate for Annabeth.

If Annabeth Chase were real she would love Leah and she would hate you all for saying Leah isn't her.

the gorgug-porter conversation is interesting to me because like. yea for the overwhelming majority of the conversation porter’s being shitty & trying to fit gorgug into a box that gorgug just does not fit into by trying to make gorgug’s relationship with his rage more focused on the aggression aspect of it. but then there’s also this specific thing that brennan brought up again in the ap, which is that gorgug’s relationship with his rage is wholly “this is a tool i use to protect my friends.” which isn’t a bad thing! but that’s his Whole relationship with it, & gorgug seems to place next to no value on his rage in relationship to himself. which is problematic, because it’s first & foremost his rage.

being raised in a household with a sort of toxic positivity largely meant that, whether or not it was his parents’ intention, gorgug internalized the message that more traditionally “negative” emotions such as anger are the wrong response to something. part of the reason he prioritizes his artificing is probably because it’s “fixing” things. in comparison to being a barbarian, which gorgug associates with “breaking” things. good vs. bad behavior, in his eyes.

it’s a totally unacceptable bar to measure a 16 y/o by, but i do think part of porter’s reasoning for not letting gorgug multiclass is him recognizing that gorgug generally does not value anger as a valid emotional response to something, at the very least for himself. & that directly conflicts with what being a barbarian is, because whether you like it or not, that rage is what fuels you. but again, barring a kid from pursuing something they deeply care about in part (not entirely, porter has a lot of more bullshit reasons) because of their fundamental values & world outlook is crazy.

so yes, 98% of porter’s reasoning is pretty shitty, immature, rife with a toxic view that there’s only one proper way to access rage, & generally not a good thing to do as a teacher, but also within that reasoning is the 2% of ‘there is a fundamental part of yourself that you only value if you can use it to take care of other people & you need to accept that as something that can take care of you, too.’ but that’s something to discuss with a therapist or a guidance counselor, not something that should hugely impact gorgug’s academic future.

like you’re gonna sit here and tell me that the man who just got walked in on with a woman cosplaying his dead wife is a homosexual and is in love with his best friend? like do not get me wrong at all, I love buddie, and if they were to ever become a couple I would be ecstatic - but I genuinely cannot see eddie being romantically or even sexually involved with a man (especially not at the minute with where he’s at) 😭😭

I could definitely see buck and eddie having a queerplatonic relationship, but at this point I don’t know if I could see them being in a romantic relationship, at least not right now. Eddie is going through it as of the end of season 7, even if they were to decide to make buddie cannon, eddie isn’t in a good place right now, and realistically it wouldn’t be happening anytime soon (and if it did I Imagine it would be slightly unhealthy)

I know some people are gonna be like ‘oh, he can have a revelation like buck’ but (although I am aware lou said it was initially gonna be eddie x tommy, meaning yes that is entirely possible and I completely understand why people think this will happen) the difference is that Oliver has being playing into buck being bi for years, this has been a widely accepted headcanon that even he has agreed with, so it made sense that it happened, and wasn’t just something that came out of nowhere. Ryan has consistently said that Eddie is straight (and while I understand that he isn’t the one who decides that + he has limitations on what he can say publicly) I feel like him having some form of revelation might not work (similar to why it was buck x tommy instead of eddie, as ryan didn’t think it would work for eddie + the whole marisol arc). And, as I said earlier, eddie realistically isn’t in a good place right now, and trying to push buddie after everything that happened at the end of s7 will likely cause it to fail before it truly starts, especially as it’s likely that it could be seen as Eddie using Buck as a rebound of sorts, rather than truly wanting to pursue a relationship

I have been a buddie shipper since late s3 so yall better not come for me for saying this 😭🙏 (Before anyone asks, yes I am a bucktommy shipper too - I am simply happy because BUCK is happy, I think they are cute and Buck is clearly doing well.
