Hair Process of Production Design - Research and Decision Making
A discussion of research sources, balancing historical accuracy and paying tribute to classic western films and creative liberties in portraying an era.
The wild west, old west or frontier era of America is a historical period that spans just over 2 century’s of American history. The era that we commonly think of when we use the name 'Wild West' is generally considered to span from about the mid 1800's to the early 1900s. Within this roughly 60 year window marked by American colonialism and westward expansion laid the foundations of decades of storytelling and folk tales. Cowboys. From this historical period sprang a cinematic genre which emerged in the silent film era and remains popular to this day. The cowboy film. The western.
When creating the production design for a western then, there is an absolutely massive window from which to draw inspiration, but the way the legends of the west have outlived their own era by almost double the time it existed for presents a unique issue. Lots, and lots of what we think we know about the west comes from movies and tv shows which take quite a lot of creative liberties with the truth. For the production designer then this presents a question, is our film inspired by the frontier era of American history? Or the cowboy film?
For Hair I chose to take elements from both, but to try and portray as much historical accuracy as possible to keep the story grounded. The look of the film in the initial moodboards took a lot of inspiration from the Spaghetti Western film movement, films like A Fistful of Dollars and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly from Sergio Leone's The Man with No Name trilogy and more contemporary cowboy films like 3:10 to Yuma and Unforgiven. I decided to expand on this by taking some inspiration from the costuming in studio westerns of the 1940s-1960s, films like Calamity Jane (1953) and Rio Grande (1950).
Calamity Jane (1953), Dir. David Butler
Rio Grande (1950), Dir. John Ford
Older films tend to code a character as a young man by giving them a slightly scrappy hat and a bandana. To replicate this, I gave Gideon a grey scarf and tied a piece of twine round the brim of his hat to give it a slightly shabby, hand-me-down character.
I also wanted to take some inspiration from contemporary cowboy films and the way costuming and set design are handled in them. For this I referred to The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007), The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018) and Django Unchained (2012).
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007), Dir. Andrew Dominik
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018), Dir. The Coen Brothers
Django Unchained (2012), Dir. Quentin Tarentino
Blazers and waistcoats are common across era's of western for both men and women, and so I gave both Gideon and Diana waistcoats.
One notable absence from these films is the presence of a female protagonist, something true of most of the western genre. For this reason Diana's costume was based more off of historical record of women's fashion in this era than cinematic sources.
One of these historical records was a hobby historian's website compiling her information of women's fashion in the wild west across the many era's it was established for. That link can be found here. I used this as a basis to begin looking into different styles of womens fashion, and found my biggest inspiration in the Wikimedia archive of tintype photography, brass etchings and collectable cigarette cards which were popular in the era and acted as records of fashion trends.
The thing I found pretty consistently across historical record and cinema was that women did not often wear trousers, the only real example of this I could find was Jane in Calamity Jane, and this is frequently pointed out in the film as being odd or not socially accepted. When talking to GG, the director of Hair, she was insistant that Diana should wear trousers. This lead to a disagreement as I believed it would look too modern and out of place, and that even working women and fighting women in the west wore skirts. A more practical style of skirt would absolutely fit the character, but the insistence she wears trousers would cause her to stand out. As the character is an outlaw trying to fit in, I thought it would be contradictory to the character then to have her wearing trousers. Eventually, I conceded and bought dark green corduroy trousers , fitting with the practical wear of men in the era.
In a sort of perfect aligning of events, when we got to set the actress arrived wearing almost exactly the skirt I'd pictured in my head, I still gave her the trousers to change into, although our location was outdoors and we had no green room so this was a little difficult. The trousers didn't end up fitting, and so the back-up was for the actress to wear the skirt she'd brought. I think this was the best possible outcome, as the trousers would have really stood out in the film and, I believe would have detracted from the overall theming of the film.
For the costuming I tried to collate clothing in dark, earthy warm tones. This was to keep the overall tone of the film earthy and brown inline with the colouring of the exterior location, as the colours there could not be changed and it was important not to clash with them.
Indoor spaces in westerns have a fairly consistently feature a warm colour scheme with cool lighting, although more intimate and friendly spaces ditch the cool lighting in favour of making the space warm and inviting. For this reason I aimed for mostly warm brown colours in the saloon, although the green walls made this a little difficult the warm lighting balanced it out for the most part.
