Part Two

“Banner, You okay man?” Bruce shook himself out of his troubled thoughts as Steve rested a hand on his shoulder. Pushing his glasses back up to his eyes he gave the Captain a small smile before nodding.

“Yeah, of course. Just working through a problem here.” He gestured to the table where paper and measurements were strewn everywhere. “Finally convinced Tony to get out of the lab and take Pepper out. So I’m trying to get ahead a little bit.”

Steve smiled knowingly at Bruce. It had been a few weeks of grumpy Tony around the tower. Everyone was glad for the brief respite.

“You should get out too, you know, get a little vacation out of the city. How long has it been since the last incident?”

Bruce knew what Steve was referring to, or rather, who. It had been a couple months since the Hulk had gained control over Bruce. The constant pressure and anxiety from living in the center of New York made it hard to push him down in Bruce’s head, but he managed. He knew, though, like Steve did, that if he went too long in a stressful environment, he would slip up and the Hulk would come out. That was the last thing they needed at this time so soon after Ultron.

“Wanda took Vis out to see the sights for the weekend, and Natasha is on a mission. You get out, take the Jet and I’ll keep Tony busy when I see him next. Sound good?”

Steve slowly guided Bruce out of the lab as he talked. In all honesty, he wanted Bruce to get out of the tower so that he could check things off his list without worrying about anyone hovering over or ruining movies for him.

“Yeah, I guess you’re right. I could use a break.”

Bruce packed a small backpack, and dressed in a pair of loose sweats and a black tshirt, boarded a jet. “ Let’s see….Where to go.” Bruce sat at the pilot, contemplating his options, before a lightbulb went off in his head. Punching in the coordinates, he set the jet to Auto and leaned back with a smile on his face.

*Time Skip*

Welcome to Ocean Shores. Read the sign as Bruce drove into the Washington state city. He had rented an SUV so he felt a little conspicuous in the small town, but it was here that he felt at peace. The sea salt spray, the gentle wind and sound of waves and gulls. It was paradise compared to the rampage going on in his head 24/7. Bruce let the window roll down as he drove slowly towards the Pacific Beach State park.

He climbed out of the car as he found his site and inhaled deeply. The sky was clear with only a few wispy white clouds. Here at Pacific Beach he liked it due to the freshwater river that ran into the ocean. Otters played by the clay shores and the tide changed the sand formation every day.

Since it wasn’t the tourist season, Bruce was one of only five people camped in the park. He was the only one living out of a car for the weekend, though. And the only person there by himself. He didn’t let that bother him though as he took off his shoes, rolled up his sweats and walked down onto the river’s beach.

He was walking up river when he was shocked to a stop. There a ways in front of him, looked to be a person washed up on the river bank. Bruce took off at a run, He was a doctor first and foremost, and an Avenger. If a person was in danger or hurt, he felt compelled to help.

As he neared them, his feet slowed. He tilted his head in confusion as he saw the [h/c] hair laying against the sand, the person was bare chested and from the waist down….

“No way.” Bruce mouthed. They had a tail…”Mermaid.” He breathed.

He quickly knelt down beside the person, Turning them onto their back was difficult with the weight of the tail, which was still slightly in the river water. The tail was beautiful the more Bruce studied it. Intricate scales in iridescent blues and greens flashed in the sunlight.

He jerked his gaze back up the face of the person. They looked to be a young adult. Their eyes were closed, long lashes lay gently on their face. Bruce checked for any injuries, mindful of the fact that they were, for all intents and purposes, naked.

“Oh!” Bright [E/c] snapped open and stared up at Bruce. Time seemed to pause for a moment. Bruce marveled at the depth of the [e/c]. He could see the beauty of the sea in them, along with a hidden pain, which he recognized from staring in the mirror at his own eyes.

The mermaid took another breath and seeming to realize they were on a beach with a human, started to swing at Bruce while trying to get back to the river.

“Woah, hold on. I’m not here to hurt you!” Bruce grabbed the mermaid’s arm as they tried to hit his face. They stared up at him, frozen, eyes wide in fear, chest heaving at the exertion. “I saw you unconscious on the beach. I was worried you were injured.”

The mermaid relaxed the more they stared into Bruce’s hazel eyes. He let go of their arm and as he stared back, he realized for the first time that the banging in his mind from the Hulk was gone.

He hesitantly smiled at the mermaid. “My name is Bruce Banner, what’s yours?”

The mermaid licked their lips in an anxious act, which Bruce caught, “[Y/n]. My name is [Y/n].” Bruce had to lean in slightly to hear their whisper. He was shocked at how husky and sweet the voice that came from them sounded.

“Well [Y/n]. I have to say you are the first mermaid I have ever met, and that’s coming from a guy who lives with a living robot, a girl with mind control powers, and a super soldier.” Bruce chuckled. His eyes filled with mirth as the mermaid tilted their head in confusion.

“You are not here for my scales?”

Bruce’s smile turned into a frown. He glanced down at the majestic tail, floating halfway in the river. “No. Why would I be?”

The mermaid worried their lip with their teeth, Eyes glancing around before settling back on Bruce’s face. They took a breath and seemed to come to a decision. “ A Mermaid’s scale can grant wishes. It is why we take such great pains to stay hidden. I got attacked by a group of sharks and swam up this river to get away but I bumped my head into a rock under the current.”

Bruce nodded along as the Mermaid told their story. He noticed the sun starting to go down and was once again thankful that he was the only one on the beach.

“You seem to be okay, and fully conscious, so I think you should be okay to go, but before you do, I just want you to know that not all Humans are monsters. At least, they don’t want to be.”

The mermaid shocked him by reaching up and cupping his jaw in their hand. They searched his face with such intensity, Bruce started to squirm a little.

Finally they took their hands away and Bruce let out a breath of air. “ I will remember you Bruce. And for your selfless act of kindness, I give this to you.”

The mermaid held up a single Blue scale and placed it in a shocked Bruce’s hands. They smiled at his expression before leaning up for a hug. “I must return to my home now, But I will never forget you….Bruce Banner.” And with a heave and a splash, they dove back into the river.

Bruce watched, still in shock, as the glowing blue and green tail swam through the current before disappearing under a wave in the ocean.

He looked down at his hand, the scale glowed as it sat in the palm. “Why give me a scale?” He thought out loud. He walked back to his car, thinking about the mermaid and wondering if he would ever see them again.

When he woke up the next morning, he thought it was all a dream. The Hulk was back in full pounding mode in his head. But one look at the scale sitting on the dashboard cleared that from his mind. He drove back to the airport, the Scale glowing and holding his attention the whole way.

As he sat in the parking lot, one thought kept running through his mind. He could wish the Hulk away. He could be free. He gripped the scale in his hand so tight it cut into him a little. He could finally be normal. Not have to worry about being angry or stressed. He could go back to being a civilian.

But the more he thought about it, the more he realized that it wasn’t the Hulk he wanted gone. It had led to Tony and Natasha and Steve and Wanda. It had led to being surrounded by friends, family... being part of a team.

He walked onto the jet, still thinking about what to do with the scale. Finally he decided, he didn’t have a wish.

Once back at the tower, Bruce ran into the lab. Carefully he drilled a hole through the scale and threaded a black leather cord through it. He had just tucked it under his shirt when the door to the lab swung open with a loud bang. “Science Bro! Where were we when I left? Got any further with that device?” Bruce smiled as Tony strolled in and picked up right where he left.

As Bruce started explaining his new theory, his mind kept wandering back to the mermaid on Pacific Beach. He smiled at the thought of their [e/c] looking up at him as they swam towards the ocean.

A/N: I think that posting my first Steve Rogers Imagine is the perfect opportunity to reveal that Captain America is my favourite Avenger! God, I think I’ve already seen Captain America: The First Avenger for at least a thousand times!! I love Steve so much and still cry about his ending in Endgame 🥺 Actually I only planned this one part but y’all know me by now, so there will most likely be a second part to this :’D Tell me what you think about it! Careful not to make any sounds, the Avengers sneak bit by bit into the Hydra base. The entrance is above water, allowing them to stay dry throughout the entering. The main building completely disappears into the ocean. Natasha takes care of a security guard while Steve and Tony creep through the large hallway into a room. The door is standing wide open - alarming the two superheroes. They go inside already prepared with their weapons. Only after they made sure that no one’s in there, Steve lets down his shield, which he held protectively in front of his body. The room appeared to be an office. Captain America begins to look inside the big shelves on the side of the room while Tony rummages through a drawer of a desk in front of a tiny window.

They’re both searching for hints of other humans who got abused for experiments just like the Scarlet Witch and the Winter Soldier were. “Captain.” Tony calls out quietly to gain Steve’s attention after he found a folder inside of the drawer. COCO is written over the front page. “What is this?” Steve whispers and Iron Man shrugs, opening up the binder. A black and white polaroid picture is attached with a paperclip to a document that looks like some kind of a personal description. Besides waves they can’t detect what’s on the picture. It must have been taken underwater somehow. A characteristic follows which they both read quietly to themselves.

COCO (UNKNOWN SPECIES)

Name: Coco (working name) Date of birth: (presumably) around the 1920′s Gender: Female Species: Unknown Origin: Discovered near Cocos Islands, Australia Abilities: Inhumanly strength, telepathy, water and weather manipulation

Looks: Eye colour: Purple mixed into blue Skin tone: Pale, white Hair colour: Dark brown

Torture methods which turned out to be succcesful:

Particularities: The species has a purple fishtale below her abdomen instead of legs, the test object can only breathe in water, it appears to be a mixture between a human being and a fish

Violation #1: The test object has killed eight agents only using her voice. The species is now taken under control and gets punished with sound impulses for the rest of the day.

Steve and Tony share a look. Iron Man slams the folder closed before leaving the office. Through a walkie talkie he informs the other Avengers of the creature they keep in here as a test object which seemingly can kill people just by screaming. They all part ways to look for the unknown species, knocking Hydra agents out on their way. “Guys?” Thor asks confused as they come to a halt in front of a staircase that goes downwards. It leads into a laboratory that seems to be in the open ocean, in the midst of the water. “What the-” Tony tries to swear but Steves non-approving look shuts him off. “Well, looks like it’s time for a swim.” Natasha says cooly and already wants to jump into the water. “DON’T!” Someone suddenly screams behind them. Startled they turn around to find an injured Hydra agent lying on the floor and bleeding. The Black Widow just fought him a minute ago. “Don’t go down there.” He grits through his teeth. “Why should we listen to you?” Tony asks with emphasis. “She... She is extremely dangerous!” The man visibly starts to shake. “She can kill all of you in the blink of an eye without even touching you!” Iron Man snorts. “She can try.” Steve seems to be the only one that wants to reconsider their choices on going into the water but Natasha already sprung into the wetness. “She’ll kill all of us.” The Hydra agent whimpers anxiously which only fuels Steve’s concern. He wants to call out for Natasha but everyone had already sprung into the water besides him - so he follows suit, putting his shield in front of him to break the surface. Natasha is the first one to come up again not being able to hold her breath any longer. Her head breaks through the water’s surface gasping, shortly followed by Clint. Steve is able to hold his breath for a little while due to his Super Soldier Serum inside of him. He swims behind every table and every counter in this laboratory, searching for something. Just the tiniest clue. He swims to the back, loses his sight of Thor when he hears a whimper coming from the right corner. Cautiosly he rounds a closet until he comes past a huge tank. The glass is completely shattered and Steve figures the tank is where the water’s all from. Someone broke it. In the corner behind the demolished fishtank sits a creature on the floor whimpering. She’s crouched together, hugging her large fishtail. The sight overwhelms Steve and he stops. What he’s seeing in front of him exceeds his imagination. The scales on her tail are purple but shimmer in green-ish shade in a certain light. Totally mesmerized is Steve staring at the mermaid in front of him. He would’ve nerver thought that something like this really existed out there - but here he is. And it is all real. Coco feels the familiar tingle in her scales of approaching danger. Slowly she looks up, scared that it’s one of the bad men again. The men which tortured her endlessly since they captured her when she was just swimming freely in the ocean towards an island she never visited before. She is deeply traumatized - being hurt to her personal edge where she even begged the men to let her finally die. But when she blinks through the floating papers in the flooded laboratory she is met with a new face. Steve grows breathless as he looks right into the mystical creature’s eyes. The color her iris is portraying is something he has never seen before. He can detect every single shimmer from the water around her pupils even white lines representing waves. Her eyes have seen the deepest of the ocean and he can feel himself getting lost in them - feeling suddenly relaxed as if he is standing on a beach looking at the blue surface of the sea. For a moment he forgets all the warnings he received. The mermaid looks nothing like a hazard. If anything she looks scared. Steve swallows hard, bravely swiming further in her direction until he is directly in front of the girl. “Who are you?” He can hear her softly ask but her mouth is closed. It sounds like she said it directly in his head, as if she crawled into his mind. “I’m Steve.” He mouths through the water. Her gaze is sinking shyly. “Are you going to hurt me?” He can see the pain in her features on her face as she questions him, communicating with him telepathically. As soon as she looks up again he shakes his head. “I’m here to save you.” She doesn’t fully believe him but her hope is bigger than her concern. She lifts her hand which, slightly alarms Steve, to take control of the water. A little whirl appears between them and Coco moves the water until only she is surrounded by water. All of the Avengers fall onto the ground after the mermaid made the water disappear in the laboratory. The heroes are grunting on the floor while Steve gets up as fast as possible to approach the girl again. He can still see the sheer panic in her posture and the way her arms cling to her fishtail. “It’s okay.” Steve says calmly, holding his hands up in defense. “You don’t need to be scared.” Still unsure the mermaid nods slowly. “Holy shit.” A voice beside him startles Steve to death. Tony is standing next to the Captain, looking incredulous at the creature in front of them. “That’s not possible.” He shakes his head stubbornly. Coco feels herself shrinking under the man’s gaze. “Who are you, Arielle?” Tony simply asks, making Steve sigh while the mermaid furrows her eyebrows in utter confusion. And for the first time, Steve hears her voice as she speaks directly to them instead of communicating telepathically with them again. “My name is Lorelei.” Both of the man feel themselves getting lulled by the sound of her magical voice. Feeling intoxicated, Steve takes a moment longer to catch himself again unlike Tony. “Wait... Why do they call you Coco?” Tony seems to be completely unimpressed by their discovery while Steve feels himself drawn to the beauty in front of him. “They captured me near Cocos Island... So that’s why.” The mermaid looks around her, feeling uncomfortable. “Uh huh.” Tony hums unconvinced. “Get out of the way.” He whispers into Steve’s direction before he activates the repulsors in his hands - ready to shoot a beam at the mermaid. Lorelei whimpers, shielding herself with her hands - scared for her life. “Tony!” Steve roars and pushes Iron Man out of the way just as the first beam shoots from his hand and bounces against a wall - alarming the other Avengers. “What are you doing?” Tony yells angrily at Captain America. “What am I doing?! You were about to kill her!” Steve speaks himself into rage. “And? You don’t really believe anything she says, do you?!” Tony crosses his arms in front of his chest while Steve sighs. “I’m just saying, Tony, she could-” “She could what?” Tony interrupts him. “Don’t you think that she’s trained by Hydra and is messing with us right now? C’mon, Captain, you can’t be that naive.” Steve groans annoyed. “I just think that we should give her a chance.” “We’re not living in the fourties anymore, old man. You can’t just walk up to any stranger and think that nothing will happen to you. Because I can assure you that this underwater monster will wrap you around her finger and subsequently kill you when you least expect it.” Tony scolds him which makes Steve’s features tense in annoyance. The men get interrupted by Natasha which has been searching for them in her soaking wet suit. “What happened?” She still grunts but now out of irritation. Her features go completely blank when she is spotting the quivering mermaid in the corner. “Woah.” Just like Tony, Natasha’s first instinct is to pull out her guns. “Natasha.” Steve immediately puts his hand on the top of her weapons and slightly pushes them down. “We should get her out of here-” Steve says and gets directly interrupted by Tony. “And then what? Take her with us to the compound? Yeah, that’s a great idea.” Tony’s voice is dripping in sarcasm. “Tony, you don’t know if she’s evil.” “Yes, because our previous encounters with manipulated Hydra experiments went so well.” He rolls his eyes. Tony wanted to imply the case of the Maximoff twins and Bucky Barnes. “They have changed. They’re on our side now.” Steve argues.

Despite Tony’s and Natasha’s objections, the Avengers decided to actually take Lorelei with them to the compound. They transported her in the back of a pick up truck that stood outside and filled the back with water. Not until they arrived at the compound they only started to think about where they’re going to put the mermaid. “And, Mr. Rogers?” Tony asks annoyed. “What now? “I could make room in the laboratory for a little tank.” Bruce suggests. “I think it’ll work temprarily. But we need to find another spot.” Tony stucks the bridge of his nose between his pointer finger and his thumb to calm himself down. “Why don’t we just free her into the ocean?” Thor smiles enthusiastically, obviously proud of his idea. “It’s too dangerous. Hydra is looking for her, we can’t just leave her on her own.” Steve explains and makes Tony sigh. “Yes, we could.” Steve ignores Tony’s comment. They transport the anxious mermaid into Bruce’s laboratory. “What do they eat? Should we buy fish feed?” Iron Man jokes the whole time while Steve’s patience is wearing really thin.

At night as everyone has already went up to bed, Steve sneaks out of his room to look after the mermaid they saved that day. Lorelei is wide awake, too scared to fall asleep since she’s not feeling safe. She fears the worst as Steve comes up to the glass of the little tank ther put her in. He smiles softly at her, showing that he means no harm to her. Steve gets on the floor cross legged while Lorelei is getting a tad more comfortable in his presence. Neither of them says it out loud, but both know that they’re about to talk through the entire night with each other.

That’s what his coworkers and friends had ganged up on him and said, before badgering him into taking the vacation. Have one tiny, tiny little work induced rage attack, and suddenly all of his workaholic friends have a minor freak out about his well being. Okay, Bruce amends, it’d been more than one rage attack — but come on, seriously, who wouldn’t have hit Mr. Ross when he’d tried to sink Bruce’s department because the man for some reason hated Bruce.

You need more sunlight, Helen had suggested, her face twisted into a concerned frown as she watched him sway where he stood, hands shaking as he reached towards the near empty coffee pot.

You need to stare at something else for a week or two or you’ll melt your brain, Jane mentioned — Bruce would like to point out what a hypocrite she is, considering Jane only took time off if Darcy laid across her long enough for Jane to pass out.

You should get laid, take a little me time, Tony adds with a wiggle of his brow and a cheeky grin curling at his lips.

Of course he doesn’t think they quite meant it like this, Bruce muses with a smile as he watches the way Thor looks utterly fascinated by the way blender works. Yeah, they probably hadn’t meant for him to go on vacation — to one of Tony’s families vacation homes in Europe — and to almost immediately be rescued by a merman of all creatures.

Lesson learned though, no falling asleep reading on a deck, if it didn't have proper railings to keep people like him, who tossed and turned and moved around in their sleep.

But it had all worked out, in the end, he thinks as he curls his toes into the warmed wood of the deck. Grinning, Bruce lets his gaze fall onto Thor, and thinks that his friends probably hadn't meant for this to happen.

“Friend Bruce,” Thor nearly bellows out, eyes wide and shining with excitement, lips stretched into a wide awed grin. He heaves himself up onto the deck with the handrails of the step ladder, laying his torso along the warmed wood as he reaches towards the machine. “Do you see this? Did you?”

Chuckling softly, he gives a nod, and settles back. Lets himself enjoy the sun, the cool breeze, the time to do nothing but sit about and do nothing. To do nothing but let his gaze trace along the flexing muscles of Thor’s bare arms. Watch the way the muscles of his back shift as he unplugs the blender and turns it this way and that, the way his tail — covered in shiny blue, near electric in the way they shine in the water — twists and shifts where it’s still swaying in the water.

Swallowing, Bruce feels his cheeks heat as he snaps his gaze up, staring at the back of Thor’s head.

Where it was safe to look.

“Bruce, Bruce,” Thor calls, twisting to grin at him before nodding at the machine held carefully in his grip — they’d learned early on, Thor was unusually strong compared to humans. “Come, explain how this works to me.”

Nodding, Bruce pushes himself out the deck chair he’d been lounging in, and makes his way over. Because it’s not like he could say no to Thor, not with how his days were numbered before he had to head back to his life in New York.

Unless…. he decided to stay.

You were in a daze and barely remembered getting back to your room, you heard Sam talking but you couldn’t grasp anything other than Thor telling you about your pregnancy.  Something that you would never expect to happen and you were certainly not ready for.  

“Sweetheart? Are you ok?” Sam looked at you worryingly.  

“Yea, uh, I um, I’m ok” you nodded “I am in need of a shower and uh, yea.”  Looking up at Sam, you saw the biggest smile on his face 

“I can tell you are worried, and I know this wasn’t your plan, but I’m so happy right now I can’t help it. We’re having another baby!” he wrapped his arms around you and pulled you into a comforting hug.  

“I love you so much, Sam” just a hug from him helped your anxious thoughts to quiet down for a few moments.  “Wanna join me in the shower?” you winked as you turned and headed towards the bathroom.

Making your way back to the common room, after a very long and rejuvenating shower, you tried your best to focus on what to do next.  Your head is spinning, as excited as you are about having another child, this wasn’t planned and kind of throws everything out of whack.  

You huff as you plop down on the couch next to Kevin, watching Morgan and Joy have a tea party in the middle of the room with all of their favorite animals.  

“So Kev, we are probably heading home tomorrow, so if there is anything you want to see while in NY, now is your chance” you tell him knowing he’s been enjoying this trip as much as you have.  

“Oh, I thought we’d be here longer, I was hoping to catch a show, but I haven’t been able to find affordable tickets, so maybe next time” he shrugs in response.

“Don’t be silly, I’m sure i can have Tony pull some strings and get you tickets for tonight, or we could move your return flight home, whichever you prefer really. Anything for Kevin Tran, world’s best nanny” you smile at him and see the small blush on his cheeks from the praise.  

“I’m serious, whatever you need, just say the word, you have no idea how relieved I am when she’s with you, because I know you take such good care of her, I don’t worry for a minute, you Kevin, are a Godsend if there ever was one”

You could tell Kevin was a bit taken back, but he rarely took a compliment well so you simply squeezed his hand and offered a sincere smile before being interrupted by Sam as he joined the girls on the floor for tea.   

“What do my girls say to a picnic then maybe a trip to the park?”   

"That sounds like a great plan, but I have an appointment with Maria after lunch so I can't make it to the park, I'm sorry sweetie" you tell them as you go to join them for tea.  

"Well, we could picnic here and maybe play down at the lake, I'm sure Tony has a kayak or canoe I can take the girls on." Sam tells you as you adjust the flower crown on his head so it  doesn't fall in his eyes.  

"Are you sure you want to take care of 2 kids by yourself? I gave Kevin the rest of the day off"

"Of course, and I need the practice" he winks as he starts to tickle the girls.  "Ok, then I will get our lunch ready while you help the girls out of these beautiful gowns and into some play clothes''

 Lunch was an event, although both girls were always well behaved, they had a tendency to make a mess, or get distracted and try to follow the butterfly that came by for a visit.  By the time you were done, you were rushing to meet Maria in time, knowing that being late was not an option.   

You knew what needed to be done but not sure how she would take the info about Roman getting away, hopefully the few of his lackeys that were picked up would get you some important info.  

By the time you made it back to the compound you were mentally exhausted, and apparently your clan had a good day as they were spread out in the common room watching The Little Mermaid.  You had to laugh at how engrossed in the movie the adults in the room seemed to be, and was Steve singing along...no, you had to be imagining that.  

Finding a seat next to Nat, you looked around fondly at your two families combining so nicely.  

“So how did she take it?” Natasha whispered without taking her eyes off the screen.  

You hadn’t told anyone what your full intention of today’s meeting was, as far as everyone knew, you were going over the mission report and strategizing the next steps, but Nat always knew everything….now that you were having two kids, you really needed to figure out how to do that.  

“Well, she’s not thrilled but understands, Furry asked if he had to buy me a farm….whatever that means” you responded shaking your head.  

She snickered and simply responded with “Clint”, you hadn’t even thought of that, “ah, well, Sam Winchester is not the Mr. Mom type, so this is my only option”    

“And are you ok with that?” she asks, finally turning and looking at you. 

“Honestly, I can’t imagine anything better” you sigh as you look over at Joy napping on Sam’s chest.  

“Good, you deserve all the happiness in the world” she gives you a small hug.  “And Tony’s throwing a dinner tonight, since you are leaving tomorrow, so be prepared”  

You roll your eyes in jest, knowing Tony would probably do something like that, “well, in that case, I’m going to try and take a nap before dinner”.   

Getting up you make your way to Sam and bend over to place a small kiss on his head, “I’m going to try and grab a nap, do you two want to join me?” you whisper in his ear, not wanting to interrupt anyone’s movie time…..and now I’m certain Steve is singing along ang actually knows all the songs.  

He smiles and nods, following behind you and into the room you are staying in

Sam got Joy settled in her crib before turning back to me, pulling me into a much needed hug.  “How do you always know when I need you?” you mumbled into his chest.  

“That’s my job” he smiled down at you “so I take it the meeting didn’t go well?”  

"It went as well as could be expected, I'm just trying to wrap my head around the time frame I gave them. Two weeks is a bit short to transition my cases to someone else and pack up my apartment but, the sooner the better I suppose" you are rambling as Sam put Joy in her crib and is now sitting on the bed watching you. 

"You are relocating?  Are you moving back to NY? I didn't realize that was an option when you made this trip…..does this have anything to do with Bucky?" he barely whispers with a worried look on his face. 

"What? Sam, no, none of this has to do with Bucky" you aren't sure why he thought that and look at him confused.  

"I…..I remember how broken hearted you were when we met, if you still love him, I would like to know…..I deserve to know since you are the mother of my children" you had never seen Sam so distressed in your life.  

He was the most confident man you had ever met, the lawyer that owned the courtroom as soon as he walked in.  You couldn't believe that he would ever be concerned with someone you used to date. 

"Oh Sam" you hold his face in your hands as you settle in his lap. "There is nothing left between Bucky and I, he was a part of my past, and might be a friend in the future,  but you are the only man I have ever truly loved with my entire being" looking into his eyes you see some relief so you lean in and kiss him softly but passionately. 

"The meeting was my resignation, or retirement as SHIELD prefers to call it. I'm leaving DC so we can all be together in Kansas all the time."  

He looks at you shocked "you quit? You love your job, I didn't think you would ever leave."  

You smile at him "I do, I love my job, but my family,  you, our kids are so much more important than any job could ever be" 

"Our kids" he whispers as you runs his hand over your stomach "we're having another baby and our family will all be under one roof….this has been an incredible day" he looks at you lovingly before wrapping his arms around you and pulling you as close to him as possible. 

"I'm sorry I didn't explain that before I left, but you know how exhausted I was the first time, there's no way I could continue this case on Roman being pregnant. Speaking of, do you think we could change the wedding date?  If we stick with our current plan, I'll be a whale walking down the aisle" you grimace at the thought of waddling in a wedding dress. 

He chuckles at you before kissing you, "whatever you want is fine by me"  

"Do you think your mom would be ok with us planning something small in the next month or so, before I start showing?" 

He laughs at your excitement to move things along so quickly "mom would love it, she works well under pressure"  

"Ok, let's try to rest before your princess wakes up" Sam and you snuggle into the bed wrapped up in each other's arms.  

It felt like you had just closed your eyes when you suddenly felt the bed shift.  Opening your eyes slowly, you came face to face with beautiful hazel eyes, had it not been for the giggles and tiny hands patting your cheek, you might have thought you were looking at Sam.  

“Joy sweetie” you whisper “how did you get out of your crib?” pulling her down to snuggle with you a bit longer.  

“Tevin hep me out” she giggles again before getting up and climbing over you to sit on Sam’s torso.  He didn’t move, but you could tell by his breathing that he was awake, and most likely ready to strike on Joy at any moment.  

It’s one of the things you love when you are all under one roof.  Not living in the same state is hard, and you both worked really hard to make things as normal as possible for Joy, but seeing them together, simple little things like this made your heart swell.  

She adored her dad, and had no idea it wasn’t normal for you to all be in the same house, but that would soon change.  Before you were too lost in your thoughts, Joy was squealing while Sam was tickling her, the fake sleep surprise attack never failed. 

Looking at them you laughed and attempted to get out of the bed, but you heard Sam whisper “let’s get mommy” and before you knew it, you were being tickled and attacked by both of them.  

By the time the three of you made it to dinner, everyone was there and of course Tony had everything catered and a full staff serving, and of course he needed to make a toast to make sure everyone knew it was an official ‘family’ dinner. 

 Clinking his glass he raised it in the air and everyone followed suit, you were about to grab the wine glass but quickly changed to the water in front of you.  

“To an ever expanding family, salut” Tony cheered as everyone followed suit and took a drink.  The table was full of laughter and chatter from everyone, even Morgan and Joy were chatting away as the best of friends. 

“So Sam” Bruce turned toward Sam “how did you propose to Y/N?” for some reason, that question got most of the tables attention and everyone was looking at the two of you.  

“Well, which time?” Sam asked with a smirk.   

You knew that this would come to bite you in the ass one day, but you had hoped it was with Sam’s family, not yours.  

“Wait…..you proposed more than once?” Steve asked, you could tell he was trying to seem like it was an innocent question, but he was really trying to understand the person you had become since you left NY.  

“Three times to be exact” Sam said with more confidence than you had expected.  You shook your head knowing everyone expected an explanation and you were about to speak when Sam squeezed your hand under the table. 

“Well, the first time was when we found out that our little Joy was on the way.  However, in Y/N defense, we were only together 3 or 4 months at that point, so it probably felt a bit rushed.   The second was about 15 minutes after Joy was born and it was a very emotional day for all of us.  The successful proposal was just a few months ago, and we went on a little road trip, and I proposed at the same chapel where her parents were married” Sam turned to you fondly and placed a sweet kiss on your cheek.  

“Wow, you are even more difficult than Pepper, I never realized that before” Tony smirked as he lifted his glass.  

“Very funny, Tony.   In my defense, the first two were spur of the moment emotional proposals and not thought through.  I didn’t refuse, but knew that you needed to really think things out before taking such a big step” you tried to explain your reasoning, but not sure if it was for yourself or everyone else. 

“They may have been spur of the moment, but they were most definitely thought through” Sam replies with a smug look while still eating and assisting your daughter with her meal.  

You looked up at him a bit confused and was about to ask more when he continued by bringing your hand to his lips and gently kissing your knuckles.  

“I bought that ring after our 3rd date, I just had to convince you that I wanted you for who you are and not what you have given to me since we met.”  

You were shocked, you had no idea he knew for that long that he wanted this life with you, it had all felt it just happened and you went with it.  You were actually speechless at this point and could see the glint in his eyes as you processed what he said.   Leaning in, you kissed him gently and looked into those amazing hazel eye, this is where you always belonged.
