Summary: Sometimes, Prince Charming is just a few years away.
Tumblr media
As much as he wanted, Jack knew he couldn’t wait forever. Every year that he waited for Ennis to come to him, took something away from his heart. He knew why Ennis never did, hell, he understood better than anyone else. But that didn’t mean that the pain didn’t go away. The pain of being put aside for him to live a life that they both knew he didn’t like, with his only bright side being his girls. Yes, Ennis Del Mar was a stubborn son of a bitch, and so was Jack Twist. Which meant they both held out hope that the other one would come to their senses and leave.
After his last visit with Ennis, Jack decided enough was enough. He couldn’t continue on meeting up with him every once in a while to spend the night together, and then return him back to his wife and kids the next morning. His heart hurt to do it, but it was for the best. Ennis looked relieved and depressed at the news, which didn’t make dropping him off any easier on Jack. But it had to be done, for both of their sakes. Which lead Jack to wandering across America. The divorce had put things into perspective for him, and now he was trying to enjoy life as best he could.
Eventually, Jack settled back on Brokeback Mountain. The place that felt more like home than anywhere else. The man felt the sun start to peak over the horizon and onto his face from the window in his bedroom. He groaned and turned over, but felt something heavy and warm wrapped around him. The warm something against his back, and the distinct lack of coffee smell let him know that his companion had yet to wake up and get started on the day today. Jack heard a groan behind him, and felt the warm body nuzzle further into his neck from behind. The early morning, the smells of the mountain, and the company with him pulled Jack into a welcome memory.
~
“‘Scuse me, sir?” Jack turned around and beheld a man with a beautiful, but worn Stetson on his head. The espresso brown color complimented the mystery man’s skin, eyes, and the little bit of hair peaking through.
“Anyone sittin’ here?” The mystery man asked, and pointed to the only other available seat at the bar. Jack shook his head and motioned for the man to sit down, which he did. Flagging down the bartender, he heard a honey smooth voice order a double whiskey on the rocks. He sounded like a man after Jack’s heart.
“Whatcha doin’ in a place like this? You look like a city boy.” Jack’s eyebrows shot up to the top of his head as he slowly looked over his shoulder at the man. The look he was giving him must have been enough to convey the emotion he felt being called a city boy, because the mystery man started to talk once more.
“Oh, ‘m sorry. Me and my big mouth. I-I-I meant that you look really clean cut for being out in a workin’ part of town like this. Not that you…” he trailed off, mumbling to himself about the trouble his mouth was about to get him into. The man reminded Jack a lot of him when he was younger and more full of vigor. He started to chuckle lightly as he turned to face the man more.
“You’re alrigh’, I suppose. What’s your name?” The whiskey in his hands felt warmer than usual, as Jack watched the man’s face. The man supplied him with his name, and let himself roll it over his tongue a couple times before giving him his own. It was strange for Jack to be back in this position all these years later, now weathered and hurt. But it reminded him of the good times he had, and hoped for more to come.
“So, what brings you out here, Jack?” He asked, nursing the whiskey in his hands. He laughed humorlessly and thought about his answer.
“Just tired of living for everyone else. All my folks ran me off, so I’m just wanderin’ now. What about you? Your folks run you off?” A flash of blonde hair and a white hat passed over his mind, but the response wasn’t right.
“I guess I’m the same. I’m tired of survivin’ for everyone else. I wanna live for me.” And like that, the sweet chocolate brown eyes flashed away from memory. The gruff voice was replaced by this honey laced one. Same situation, different outcome. It took Jack a long time to realize that this was the beginning of the rest of his life.
~
Being pulled back into the present, soft kisses were pressed against Jack’s shoulders, neck, and back. He hummed at the affection and let himself sink further into the embrace. The head that the devilish lips were attached to peaked over his shoulder and came into view.
“Good morning, cowboy.” His partner said, voice stifled with sleep. He dropped his head on Jack’s chest and let the other man card his hands through his hair.
“Good morning, beau.” Jack responded as he pressed a small kiss to his head. They laid there for a moment more before his partner had to get up, and he made it known. Groaning, he shuffled over Jack, stretched, and walked over to grab a pair of jeans off the floor. Jack simply admired the man from behind, and made no move to get out of bed just yet.
“You wan’ some coffee, cowboy?” He asked, hand waiting on the door. Jack leveled him a deadpan look.
“Does that damn rooster wake us up every morning?” The man laughed as he walked out the door of their bedroom, and left Jack laying down in their shared bed. He knew he needed to get up. He had to help with taking care of their ranch, but everything seemed peaceful right now. He’d hate to disturb it, but it needed to be done. After a few minutes of staying in the warm bed, and letting the sunrise get him awake, Jack stood and went to go find a pair of jeans and a shirt. He stuffed his feet into a pair of socks, before grabbing another flannel shirt and heading to the kitchen.
The sight was something to behold when he finally arrived in the kitchen. His partner stood with his back to the threshold, and lost in his own world. He hummed quietly as the coffee was brewing on the stovetop, with the radio guiding him along in tune and tempo. As he watched the man in the kitchen go about his routine, Jack ran his hands over the flannel in his hands that he was going to offer. Their life together so far flashed in his head as he quietly observed. He came up behind the shirtless man and wrapped his arms around his shoulders, while tucking his head into the little spot where the neck met the shoulder. Jack felt his partner’s head tip back onto his own shoulder and the two began to sway gently. The music, the smell of the coffee, and the sound of the great outdoors that awaited them all helped set the mood of the morning.
Both were just content. They were content to be with each other, content to live where they did, and content to be themselves. It was easier to be themselves away from the prying eyes of society. The same ones that called their lifestyle sinful while having multiple affairs. But that didn’t matter out here. Here, they were just there. No heavy deadlines, or appearances to keep. No watching what they say, or how they act. It was freeing to be them out here. Jack watched with droopy eyes as his partner placed several spoonfuls of sugar into his mug and went to add a splash of milk. While Jack didn’t need the milk, it was a nice touch when they could afford it. He watched the man fix his own cup of coffee before dragging them both over to the table in the dining room. Jack had totally missed the food that was already there. How long had it been that his partner left their bedroom?
“Here you go, cowboy. Eat up. We’ve gotta go repair that fence today.” The man said, digging into his eggs and sausage. Jack groaned around a mouthful of eggs and threw his head back.
“Seriously? How many times have we had to fix that damn fence this month?” He continued to tear into his toast and breakfast while they talked.
“Three. That’s because of the damn sheep. They just don’t leave it the hell alone. Which reminds me, we’ve gotta eat anythin’ that can go bad soon. We’re movin’ the sheep ‘cross the mountain again this summer.” Jack was amazed at his ability to multitask like that. It surely couldn’t have been easy but he made it appear so.
“Damn it. Okay. We takin’ Jesse with us, right?” He asked, biting off a piece of toast.
“Yep. We’re gettin’ a little raise from last year’s adventure but it will be enough to pay for the fence and then some.” The men finished their meals with some small talk, mostly about the day ahead. With plates in the sink, and mugs in hand, a now full dressed couple stood on the porch, and watched the land. Jesse came up as soon as she saw her owners with a dead squirrel in her mouth and tail a wagging. They laughed and got the squirrel away from her before resting. The same routine everyday, but they loved it. One last moment of piece before they would turn in for the night later on.
They drank their coffee and enjoyed the blissful state of nature around them. Jesse laid at their feet, while Jack wrapped his right arm around his partner’s shoulders. He felt his partner do the same but with his left arm. Jack turned and pressed a kiss to his partner’s head and nuzzled further into the hair that he fell in love with years ago. He always imagined that he would be doing this with Ennis. That’s what his heart wanted for twenty years; twenty years of longing, pain, love, and heartache. But this was even better. A partner that loved him as he loved him, one that stood by his side but called him out when he needed to. Someone to live out his happily ever after with with no doubt that he would crawl through fire and glass just to see Jack happy. Maybe it’s not with who he originally thought it would be, but happily ever after takes a little time to get sometimes.

It's been a little over two years since I first watched Brokeback Mountain. I never imagined that would lead to me writing so many fics for Jack and Ennis, but here we are. One of them has just become my most viewed fic, which is nice 🙂
Tumblr media
I love these characters and think about them, and their sad story, every day.
Here is the fic in question.

The Road to Sweetwater
by EuripidesTrousers on Ao3
“Well. They don't call me Mad Sirius Black for nothing”, Black drawls lazily, “Speaking of drinks - you got any whiskey in your pack there or just old biscuits? Caught me talking politics and now my throat's awful dry.”
Remus lifts his brow incredulously, disbelief creeping into his voice, “You must think I got a real short memory thinking you're owed a drink after that show back there. You clean forget you're at my mercy, and then go trying to steal my horse-”
“Not in the habit of letting a man put me in the dirt without buying me a drink”, Black drawls, his grin turning sly, “Or maybe you got something else that'll make defeat a mite easier to swallow.”
----
Sirius Black is wanted by the law in the state of Wyoming and Remus Lupin, who's still deciding which side of the law a bounty hunter sits on, captures him for the price on his head. It should be simple. But there's something in the air that Fall that sets Remus' compass spinning, and nothing seems simple anymore.
Cowboy AU i repeat Cowboy AU! what more can you ask for, really?
favourite tropes included are:
cowboy!au
in my wolfstar?
well, technically sirius is an outlaw
hurt / comfort
snark as foreplay?
angst
tonks being very cool
wlw/mlm solidarity
remus running away from his feelings
but coming back?
a horse named grindylow
i think technically this is a brokeback mountain au
as always leave lots of love and kudos to the author and have an amazing rest of the week <3

The bad news is that with all the excitement and challenges that come with moving to a different country, I seem to have very little brain capacity for reading anything but fanfics so far
The good news is that our first class assignment is literally to read and prepare for a discussion of Brokeback Mountain, so it should be a smooth enough transition

"Untitled" (Dexterous)
|| Lancelot/Merlin ● G ● WC: 200 ● No Warnings ||
---
Merlin was a tangle of overgrown limbs in loose-stitched boots and sleeves: tripping over himself everywhere he went—but the tips of his fingers were the most precise tools Lancelot had ever seen.
They never shook when Merlin pulled stitches along cuts and gashes. When he took Lancelot on his errands to the woods, he handled a penknife at the stems of rare plants against a deft thumb. With magic, his palms struck the air, seismic. All of his grace was in his hands. Lancelot remembered this, and so laughed every time he saw Merlin barrel head-first over a bench, table, or cart.
Once, beyond the city walls, they escaped the castle clatter, and sprawled in a field of weeds beside Merlin’s satchel and Lancelot’s sword belt. Lancelot relaxed with closed eyes, and felt Merlin trace the shell of his ear with a steady hand.
“I feel lucky,” Merlin said, “that you love me.”
“Who says I love you?” Lancelot teased.
“You do. Constantly.”
He only had to shift his head to see Merlin grinning, smug. And he was right: Lancelot was a terrible romantic. He reached over and took Merlin’s delicate fingers, and kissed the knuckle on each one.

Summary: A quick trip into town for a few cowboys quickly turns into a trip down memory lane.
Tumblr media
“Jack! Come on, we gotta go into town.” A voice called the man from where he was pulling on his boots. He groaned as he grabbed his coat from the stand near the door right next to the other man. Jack looked all around for his hat but to no avail, until the other man presented him with his black Stetson in his hands. He took it from the other man with a quiet thanks before heading out the front door and to the old pickup that was in the front. Jack grumbled as he helped their dog into the floorboard of the pickup and waited for the other man to follow suit.
“Why ya so fussy today, cowboy?” His companion asked. Instead of words, he was met with a deadpan look on the passenger’s face. As he started the car, he began to grumble himself.
“I know you don’ like goin’ into town but we need to. Our girl needs her check up and we need some stuff from the store.” He reached over and placed a soothing hand on Jack’s shoulder who continued to stare out the window as the trees passed by. There were many reasons why Jack didn’t like going into town. The least of his worries was that they looked at him like a no good hick. But it had to be done. Their dog needed to be seen by the vet in town. They needed to get some more food that they couldn’t grow. But that didn’t mean that Jack had to like the task of going into town.
The drive in was peaceful, which was is in stark contrast to the thoughts rattling around inside Jack’s head. Trees blended together as the wind swept over his face. The day old stubble was rough against the palm he leaned against. When a hand reached down to rest on his thigh, Jack unconsciously held it in his other hand that wasn’t against his face. He needed the comfort before their trip into the public where they both had to hide their affections. A few minutes later, when they saw the first few stores pop into view, a gentle squeeze was passed between them as they pulled away. Both men didn’t need to speak in order to understand what the other was thinking.
“Can you go with the girl to the vet while I get started in the store? It’ll make our time out here faster.” His partner offered as he parked in front of the vet, with the store only a few doors down. Jack nodded and wordlessly got out of the old pickup to clip the leash onto their dog. He made his way to the front door and went inside as he heard that old truck pull out of the lot. Jack preferred to be in the vet more than the store. The ladies behind the desk were always kind to him and gave him a cookie every time he came in. All the other animals nearby seemed to want Jack’s affection whenever he showed up, which the man was more than willing to shower them in. Most of all, the vet usually never took more than an hour of time out of his day. People made him weary, worried about saying or doing the wrong thing to the wrong person. Being around the other animals was a blessing.
Eventually, Jack left the vet’s office with a clean bill of health for his girl, and a cookie. Munching on it quietly, he snuck little pieces of it to the dog and enjoyed watching her tail wag at the tiny crumb of a peanut butter cookie. As he made his way to the store down the way, he spotted the old pickup that belonged to his partner and went to go put the dog in the bed of the truck. Jack clipped her leash to the little hook they put inside just for occasions like this. Sharing with her the last bite of the cookie, Jack went inside the store in search of his companion. The Stetson on his head helped block out the bright LED lights above that were brighter and harsher than the noon day sun. Eventually he saw a familiar jacket moving to the next isle, and excitedly he made his way around and down to follow. As he moved, Jack prayed that he had finished most of the shopping so he didn’t have to spend much time in public. Living on the mountain had made him reluctant to have normal interactions again.
But it wasn’t his partner that greeted his eyes a little ways down the aisle. A familiar head of blonde curls, squinted eyes, and downturned lips was what greeted him instead. Jack felt his heart stop for a moment as he beheld the man he hadn’t seen in several years, ever since he found his partner that should be nearby; Ennis Del Mar. The man didn’t know what he wanted to do. He couldn’t make his body run away from the blonde, but he couldn’t make it go towards him either. Jack wished that the Earth would swallow him whole before-
“Jack?” Too late. He had seen him. The man in question blinked back into the present and felt the wind get knocked out him. Ennis Del Mar was now standing in front of him. Those deep brown, almost black eyes that he fell in love with all those years ago stared deep into his soul. His blonde curls were shorter yet still as wild as always.
“Jack Twist? How the hell are ya?” Ennis said excitedly as he came up to stand in front of a still frozen Jack. But his smile dropped quickly as he watched how Jack still didn’t respond.
“Jack? Jack, you okay, rodeo?” That seemed to snap the man out of his daze. He blinked into the present and away from memories that he remembered sustained him not too long ago.
“Ennis. Um, yeah. Yeah, I’m good. How are you? How’s the girls?” Jack asked politely and took a brief scan around to see if anyone was watching. Unfortunately he didn’t see his partner anywhere in sight.
“The girls are alright. The little ones started a new year of school and I got a promotion so I can help pay for a better education once it comes time. What about you? What have you been up to?” Ennis talked so casually, inquiring about his life but Jack knew the man long enough to know what he was really asking. The subtitles would have said, “do you have anyone romantically in your life?”
“Oh I’ve been around. Just came into town for a vet check up and some groceries. Then headin’ back up the mountain a ways to home. Livin’ the quiet life.” Jack chose to leave out that there was, in fact someone else in his life that consumed his very being. Hopefully Ennis wouldn’t be around too much longer.
“That’s good. The girls have been beggin’ for a pup of their own for a little bit. Hey, why don’t you come over for dinner one night? The girls are going to Alma’s parents’ for the weekend and Alma is on a girls trip.” Before Jack could speak, the sounds of boots that he knew all too well came pounding down the floor behind the pair.
“Jack! Been lookin’ for ya. Oh, who’s this?” His partner came up behind him and stood too far away for Jack’s liking. But he had to remind himself that they were in public, and not was not about to blow their cover.
“I’m Ennis. Ennis Del Mar. ‘M an old friend of Jack’s.” The blonde haired man reached his hand forward and waited for the other man to shake it. As he did, he supplied him with his own name.
“Oh, Ennis. I remember some of Jack’s stories of y’all way back when. He has some funny stories of y’all that I’d love to hear the other side of.” Jack felt his heart speed up at the thought of sitting through a dinner between his current partner and his former whatever Ennis was.
“Jack, what kind of food do I need to get the princess that’s at the house? You know what she eats and she’s so picky.” The man turned towards Jack and kept his face neutral. Jack turned with a slightly confused look on his face.
“Umm the Purina one. I’ll show you. Um, it was good seein’ ya Ennis. Don’t be a stranger.” His partner leaned in and shook Ennis’ hand one last time.
“Good meetin’ ya, Ennis. Glad I could finally meet the man, the myth, and the legend in person after all these years. We gotta get goin’ now. See ya ‘round.” He stayed behind Jack as he maneuvered with the cart towards where the dog food was. but when they stood in front of the food, Jack turned to look at his partner.
“You know what type of food she eats. Why lie?” He questioned as he watched the other man haul a bag on to the bottom of the cart.
“Cause you looked like a damn spooked horse over there, cowboy. You needed an out. Come on. Let’s get home. This was the last thing we needed.” As they neared the checkout lines, keys were pressed into Jack’s hand and a silent command was spoken. He made his way to the truck and grabbed the dog from the back to sit with him in the front.
It wasn’t but a few minutes before his partner was walking confidently out of the store. Not looking like a man that just had to pull his partner away from panicking in front of a former lover. Was it even love if one of them didn’t want to make it work? Or was Jack pressing too hard? Should he have backed off and allowed Ennis to come to him? Thoughts ran wild through his head as he watched the familiar passing landscape of trees and their leaves pass the pair of men by. Once they were out of the city, a familiar hand made its way to Jack’s thigh. Their communication was hidden; in code, in glances, in touches. The pair understood each other so well that they didn’t need words to describe what they needed to say. They allowed other things to do that for them.
When they pulled up in front of their house, the truck was shut off but neither one made the effort to get out. Jack allowed himself to be manhandled by his partner so he was resting against his chest. In the privacy of their ranch, with the mountain as their back and front yard, they allowed themselves to breathe in relief. Today didn’t go as planned, but that didn’t matter. Jack knew he had someone reliable around. Someone that he could count on him to pull him out of a sticky situation, or out of his own head. Someone to hold and support him, and allow himself to be his own man. Someone that was his partner in every aspect of life.

3:10 to Yuma Fanfic Ideas!
Have you just seen 3:10 to Yuma (2007) or rewatched it, only to look on AO3 and realize, "There isn't a wide variety of Fanfiction, damn it's more empty than my wallet!" Well, if you're in the writing mood or need plot ideas, I've got you!
(These can be used for more than just 3:10 to Yuma, but using it for 3:10 to Yuma would be so amazing.❤️)
Wade and Dan living together to 'help' Dan pay rent💀😭
3:10 to Yuma but Dan survives and becomes changed by the overall experience while Wade becomes a good person since Dan has broken his perspective on the world.
Dan dies and Wade tells his story(can be written in many different ways)
Dan survives and takes care of Wade's injuries that he gained from the whole trip to get to the train.
Modern Au where Ben Wade is part of a motorcycle gang and Dan is whatever job you think he should have.
Alice leaves, Wade and Dan raise William and Mark😱
Coffee shop AU! But Dan works at a coffee shop and Wade is an artist or just goes there to draw. (Can take place in a modern au or in the original setting time)
Ben Wade and Dan Evans are just friends who travel together after 3:10 to Yuma (with Dan surviving.)
Wade is nice to Dan but Dan doesn't like it too much because it makes him feel inferior (can be applied to listed fanfic ideas)
Brokeback Mountain.
I'm sure you can tell all of these are Dan x Wade. If you guys want Dan x Alice, or a different ship, lemme know, I can also try to come up with other shops than Ben Wade x Dan Evans.

quadro novo no jornada!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

They had been up in the mountains for what felt like a dog’s age when Jack finally threw caution to the wind.
They had stopped trading back and forth so that one of them was sleeping with the sheep, which meant that one of them wasn’t in the protection of the tent. Jack had heard Ennis shivering like his entire body was trying to shake apart for almost a full half hour before he had called to the other man to invite him into the warmth of the tent. They had cuddled together with two sets of blankets and the body warmth of another person to keep them from getting so cold that they never woke. That was what had really pushed Jack into reaching over and grabbing hold of Ennnis’ hand.
He knew that Ennis was a safe person. He was quiet, but it wasn’t the kind of quiet that held hate between tightly sealed lips. Instead, Ennis was shy and scared. He didn’t talk much because he didn’t think that anyone would value the words that he had to say. Jack did, though. He liked listening to Ennis talk about the life that he had lead before they had gotten the same summer job for half the pay. He liked it when they roughoused with the dogs while bored or when they were butchering animals together and trying to gross the other out with the organs that they found within the elk.
He mostly like Ennis because he seemed to be open to a lot of things. They had been able to talk about the different churches that their folks had gone to without the conversation devolving into shouting and calling the other a heathen like a couple of other rodeo workers had when Jack was traveling. They had also been able to talk about their folks and previous pets, which had revealed a couple things that Jack hadn't told anyone in a really long time.
Those hints that he had dropped, probably not as deliberate as they needed to be but as much as he could make them without wanting to toss his lunch up from his guts, were another thing that made him feel safe around Ennis. When he had leaned more towards the truth than further from it, Ennis hadn’t changed in the slightest.
So, Jack woke and felt that hot coil tightening further and further in his stomach. He knew that he was going to be unable to ignore it no matter how hard he tried. He reached his hand behind him in search of Ennis’ and then smirked when he felt the other man wake up. He brought the arm around him and then slowly lead the hand underneath the covers to where his jeans were tenting from the way that his legs were bent. A gasp caught in his throat when the shifting of the fabric around him caused a spark of pleasure to echo through him.
Ennis seemingly woke up enough to realize what was happening and sat bolt upright in the bed, his eyes wide and alarmed. Jack scrambled into a sitting position as well and then snapped the two canvas flaps closed so that the door wasn’t open to let cold air in. “Stop,” he whispered. He reached forward so that his hand was clasping the back of the other man’s head so that they were only a hair’s breadth apart from each other. “Ennis,” he whispered.
It only took a moment longer before they were surging forward in a passionate kiss. They moved their lips back and forth before they began to nip at tongue and teeth, their breath sucking from one’s lungs before they dumped into the other’s. They were mixing together in the most intimate way and it was more than either of them had ever dreamed of. It felt more right than any other kiss that they had shared with a person that wasn’t the cowboy in their arms.
Jack reached behind him and removed the fleece and denim jacket that had been keeping him warm. He began to shiver as the cool air around him leeched into his body, but it was replaced with the burning hot feeling of arousal that was seeping into his muscles from the depths of his gut. Ennis surged forward and began to devour his mouth in another kiss before he had much longer to think about it.
There was a scramble of denim and leather as they removed their jeans and belts, letting them clank together in their rush. Jack tilted his eyes down and then felt his stomach jump in excitement when he saw the girth and length that Ennis held in his hand. He then followed the other man’s gaze down to his own very obvious lack of a cock. “Where’s yours?” Ennis asked after what felt of an eternity in the shivering cold weather.
“Was born without one. Happens sometimes,” Jack joked. “Thought that you woulda seen the equipment that I had given that you’ve got that girl in the valley waiting for you to be done.”
“Don’t talk about her right now,” Ennis snapped quickly. He grasped Jack’s hips with both of his hands and then threw the other man around so that he was on his hands and knees. Jack groaned into the bed coverings, his hands grasping tightly at the blankets to try and keep himself steady.
He completely forgot about the short interaction as he was immersed in the pleasure of being entered. They thrusted and moved against each other with all the grunts and groans that were included in that kind of activity. They collapsed down onto the bed without even bothering to clean anything up or redress themselves once they were both spent.
---
Jack woke far before Ennis did and collected himself. He cringed as he felt the last of the spunk from the night before oozing down into his underwear. He was going to have to wash his clothing, which would be a pain in the ass given the weather that they had been experiencing.
When he peaked his head out of the tent, he was happy to see that things had already warmed up during the night. The sun was beginning to peak over the tops of the trees and bathing their campsite with golden light. It meant that the ground was almost steaming as the dew from that morning began to raise up into the air around them.
Jack removed himself from the tent without waking up Ennis, which was a feat in and of itself. He walked around to the fire and then squatted down in front of it. Fluids were still leaking from him, so he knew that he wasn’t going to be able to sit down without grossing himself out to the point where he expired on the spot. He took the lighter from his pocket and the starter from the other so that he could get a small fire going. The wood was wet from the morning since they hadn’t properly covered it the night before, but there was enough heat from the fire that he was able to get the water warm enough to be palatable for personal washing.
He took the kettle down to the river with him, only looking back every five steps instead of walking entirely backwards like he wanted to. He knew that certain things could be acceptable during the middle of the night when tensions and passion were high, but he wasn’t sure how the morning was going to go. While Ennis had been balls deep within him the night before, that didn’t mean that he was going to be okay with Jack being a transman when he woke up. Lots of people that Jack had encountered in the same way had turned into the worst beings ever known when the post-sex breakfast was supposed to happen. It was one of the reasons that he had kept moving around until he got this job.
When he reached the river, he set down the washing cloth and his kettle on the slick rocks. He removed his jeans and underwear first, allowing them to soak in the clear water of the river. He scrubbed out the cum and slick from their activities the night before and set them out to dry. He removed his shirt and the thin strip of cotton that he used to keep his small chest as flat as possible and then did the same to him. He was left in nothing but his hat, to keep the morning sun from blinding him while he bathed, and his boots after that.
The warm water from the kettle had cooled significantly while he was walking, but it was still better than the frigid snowmelt of the river. He washed in between his legs thoroughly so that he didn’t develop some kind of infection or itch. He hoped that Ennis was clean, it was really going to suck if they both stated suffering from some disease because they hadn’t taken the time to think of a wrapping.
By the time that he had finished with his bath, the sun was raising into the sky so that it was almost noon. Jack had laid his clothes out in such a way that they were able to dry very quickly. He replaced his underwear and pants first, which was the only part of his body that Ennis had actually seen well the night before. He grabbed the long strip of cotton after that and began to weave it around his chest.
“So you do have tits,” Ennis’ voice rang through the small valley that their stream ran through.
“Most people born like me do. Prefer to think of them as pecs, though,” Jack replied almost bitterly. He hated having the extra flabs of tissue on his body, he was never going to use them for anything and he wanted his body to look as sculpted as Ennis’ did for the same amount of work.
He finished wrapping the binder around his body and then grabbed his shirt, shoving his hands through the thick flannel. “You alright after last night? I know you were pretty upset when you realized what I was doing.”
“I was only upset because I thought that you were a man. If you’re a woman then it’s fine. We didn’t sin or do anything illegal or wrong,” Ennis replied. He walked fully down to the stream so that they were standing beside each other, but facing opposite ways.
“You think I’m a woman?” Jack asked, trying not to let the hurt ebb into his voice. He had been dropping hints about who and what he was since the first time that they had really connected with each other. He had been under the impression that Ennis knew he was transgender and was just accepting that on the face, not that he was thinking of him in an entirely different way.
“Well that’s what it means when someone has a cunt and tits, right?” Ennis asked. He had his hands jammed into the front of those damned acid washed denim, the pale color already scuffed with dirt and grass from the last time that he had washed them.
“Not always. Sometimes you get people like me that were born in the wrong shaped body. We gotta change the way that other people see it just so that they can get a peak into what we really are,” Jack muttered. He was a lot more bitter than he thought that he would be about this, he should have been used to people dismissing his real personhood once they figured out his secret.
“You ashamed to be a woman or something?” Ennis asked as he took a cigarette out of his pocket and then placed it between his lips.
“I ain’t ashamed of shit because I’m not a fucking woman!” Jack shouted back at him.
“Alright, alright. I don’t understand it, but I can see you’re telling the truth. Guess people are made differently when they come from other places,” Ennis spit into the stream and then bent down to the raging water so he could rinse his face off.
That was the best answer that Jack was going to get for the time being, he knew that. Maybe one day they would be able to live in a world where people like him were explained by science and accepted by the wider populace, but for now that was a reaction he was going to easily accept. It hadn’t resulted in him having a bloody nose or being thrown to the wolves, so it was better than quite a lot of other interactions he’d had.
