i don’t want to jump the gun, but i think hwang daseul might have just done it again. two episodes in to let free the curse of taekwondo and i am obsessed. more than obsessed. transfixed. this show feels special in a way hwang daseul’s touch only can give, and just using these two episodes to compare to her previous works, i love that i can already spot the continuity in the kinds of stories she tells, the messages she portrays and how she portrays them. she just knows how to let her characters exist in harmful and difficult places and show how their experiences affect them while also just showing them as normal human beings. it is so so easy to overdramatise these kinds of stories that have these difficult topics and have it be so surface level, but she has never done that. instead, she shows how those experiences shape a person and how they go about living in spite of them. all the way from where your eyes linger to now, she gives us characters that are wholly themselves and not just the traumas they have gone through and i just adore that. i can’t remember what i was talking about specifically, but i remember talking about this sentiment and how it actually helps to build empathy in an audience as opposed to just showing a difficult topic at the most surface level bc you think that makes it accessible and easier to understand and hence empathise with. i don’t think that ever works. it’s only when you do what hwang daseul does, when you give us characters we can get to know and fall in love with and care for that you help us to empathise with their experiences. it’s hard to understand the weight and the hardship of experiencing something traumatic, but when something bad happens to someone close to you, a family member or a friend, you understand and feel that pain astronomically more. that’s what hwang daseul manages to do. and more so, she makes you feel that while also seeing these people as people. you get to see them away from the hurt, you see them smile in moments of happiness and you see that too with people you’re close to, and you feel even more how special and important those moments of happiness are.
and that’s why, whenever hwang daseul is at the helm of something, i will be seated from start to end with endless boxes of tissues ready. i can’t wait to see what else this show has in store.

tbh i was super nervous for this ep bc this was technically our ep 11 and those tend to be the angst eps. i was holding my breath when the convo about phum bringing peem to his house came up. even if it was focused on his mother and not the whole family bc phum obviously does not want to even exist in the same space with his father. and i think that's valid. i think phum has a good reason to feel resentment towards his father.
but yes, i was nervous about the "let my parents meet you" -part bc i know how that goes in the novel. i've read bits and pieces of it before the ahow started airing bc this one amazing person on twt was sharing their translation. and let me tell you, even without much context bc i haven't read the whole novel obviously, the part with phum coming out made me bawl bc am sensitive to such topics, especially when it causes drama within the family.
it's a heartbreaking moment in the novel and i was super scared they would suddenly hit us with it in this ep. i was thinking that phum's dad would walk in and go all insane about his son dating another man right then and there. that maybe peem would kicked out or something. that everything would go up in flames.
but am glad they didn't try to fit that in bc there's only one more episode left and i feel like that wouldn't have been enough to solve everything AND give us a good ending. but also damn. i kinda wanted to see that on screen. i know how well ppw deliver angst and heartbreak, so i wanted to see the phumpeem coming out struggle, but well. i am happy like this! just keep the show lighthearted and more focused on the friendships. it makes it more cohesive.

Now I will probably buy kotarou maghni when he comes out if not just to encourage the planned other vocals although out of all the virvox characters the teens are the least likely to be used very often by me outside of group songs. Now I do selfishly hope the next one announced is akashi because he's my second favourite and I Want His Voice. the bits I've heard of his vp has a lot of nice depth but also some really charming anime-boy-idol type of solidness which id really like using

4, 18, and 24 for Lace and Hornet maybe?
THE GIRLSSSS ive just been going insane over them again recently so ty for this
(Also quick note: my version of Lace is pretty much entirely fanon given the fact that Silksong isn't even out yet, so take of that what you will- I see her as a sadist who puts on a sweetly cruel demeanor to vent her anger and frustration with the church of Pharloom while also concealing the fact that she sees no escape from it and genuinely pities those it takes advantage of: she's very good at playing the 'game' of politics that it forces her into. Her fascination with Hornet is based on the fact that Hornet very much does not give a damn about this and is hellbent on taking down a seemingly unstoppable force, which then blooms into affection when it looks like Hornet actually has a chance at doing so)
4. Who initiates affection? Why does the other not initiate affection as much?
-Lace tends to initiate affection! Hornet usually doesn't, but this is more because Hornet herself isn't much of a touchy-feely type by nature. Lace, on the other hand, both has far more experience with relationships as well as a very long history of never actually being able to be herself in any of them, so she's much more comfortable with it.
(Not that Hornet is uncomfortable with affection by any means- the fact that Lace is one of the few people she allows to initiate affection is enough. Plus, it gives her a chance to reciprocate, because she never learned how or when to do so)
18. How do they care for each other when one of them is wounded/sick?
-Lace patches Hornet up while teasing her relentlessly about it (or, in the case of all the imagined in-game scenarios where they're forming an uneasy allyship, while trying to convince both Hornet and herself to just kill her instead of prolong her suffering). Hornet, on the other hand, does it while threatening to kill for her, which Lace thinks is very sweet
24. How do their personalities affect their relationship? Do their characteristics compliment each other, or clash often?
-Despite their personalities seeming to be night and day, their ideals are very similar, so they end up complimenting each other; when they clash, it's because both of them are stubborn and think their own means of doing things is the best way about it. Hornet is blunt, cold, and painfully honest, while Lace is sweetly cruel and amazing at putting up a facade, but both of them believe its better to perish than to suffer and to die with dignity than to be debased, so they get along quite well. Lace helps Hornet navigate the intricacies of Pharloom and its culture, while Hornet gives Lace hope, as well as relief from the suffocating mindgames that the nobility play via her preference to bruteforce it through combat

always pisses me off when people call a very obviously queer work "queerbait" just bc the main duo doesn't kiss or fuck on screen. or bc there's more heavy focus on a plot than on romantic scenes. like maybe you should eat more walnuts i hear they improve brain function and intelligence
