10 years ago (okay, 9 1/2 years) Hell's Kitchen in Minneapolis, MN defeated me. I knew I would never rest until I came back and claimed a victory.
My companions and I got a giant cinnamon-caramel-pecan roll, huevos rancheros, walleye hash with toast, lemon-ricotta hotcakes with blueberries, bison benedict with hashbrowns, and home-made peanut butter pancakes. Oh, and naturly we got an appitizer of sausage bread.
Result: Victory! Take that Hell's Kitchen!
(This time no one added last minute biscuits and gravy)
I can't believe I've been doing this for 10 years and haven't had a  coronary

Zuppa Toscana With Heritage Pork Sausage & Wild Boar Bacon
Zuppa toscana is a traditional Italian soup originating in Tuscany. It’s really easy to make and full of flavor with a little kick (if you desire) from crushed red pepper. Our heritage pork mild Italian sausage was practically made for this recipe, and it’s a match made in heaven with our wild boar bacon. This flavorful soup is delicious, creamy and satisfying with thinly sliced potatoes and chopped kale. It’s a real crowd pleaser and perfect for soaking up with breadsticks.
Ingredients:
🍴 1 lb heritage pork mild Italian sausage 🍴 Crushed red pepper 🍴 5 slices wild boar bacon, roughly chopped 🍴 1 large onion, diced 🍴 3 cloves of garlic, minced 🍴 Sea salt to taste 🍴 8 ½ cups bison bone broth 🍴 6 red potatoes, sliced thin 🍴 1 cup cream 🍴 2 cups chopped kale (stems removed). https://bit.ly/3pkPvI2

World Bratwurst Day
Hit up your local grocery store or meat market and bring home some delicious bratwurst, a high-quality type of German sausage made of pork, beef, or veal.
While it’s certain that we’ve all had our share of sausages in our day, particularly that low-born sheath of processed meat known as the frankfurter, not everyone has had the pleasure of enjoying a bratwurst. Bratwurst is typically made from pork, but can, in fact, be made from any meat, and World Bratwurst Day celebrates every variety you can conceive of.
Learn about World Bratwurst Day
Bratwurst is a sausage that is heavily spiced, and it tends to be enjoyed either on its own with a side of sauerkraut or in a roll with mustard. The word ‘bratwurst’ comes from two German words. The word sausage is ‘wurst’ and then ‘braten’ means to fry. Pretty self-explanatory, right? Bratwursts have been around since the 14th century, and we will tell you a bit more about this. These sausages are typically made from beef, veal, or pork. These sausages are so popular that there have even been festivals created in their honor, and most people like to wash bratwursts down with a cold beer.
You may assume that a bratwurst and a sausage are both the same things, but that is not the case. A Bratwurst is a specific kind of fresh link sausage, which is made with veal or pork. However, sausage simply refers to ground meat being prepared in a certain way. Some people also assume that bratwursts and hot dogs are the same. Hot dog casing is a lot thinner than the casings that are utilized for bratwurst and other types of fresh link sausages.
Very traditional recipes for bratwurst call on the use of both eggs and cream in their preparation. However, it is important to note that different regions in Germany have different recipes. Bratwurst even differs in some regions of the United States as well, for example, in Wisconsin, Sheboygan-style bratwursts are very popular.
History of World Bratwurst Day
Sausage is quite ancient, going back as far as 228AD according to archaeological evidence, but the noble Bratwurst has only been around since 1313. Every region has a different variety of bratwurst to call its own, with over 40 varieties coming from within the country of Germany. Throughout Germany Bratwurst are perceived as more of a snack food than a main dish, though they can often be found served in the latter capacity at pubs, usually with sauerkraut or potato salad and a dense rye bread or pretzel. New York City may have hot dog vendors, but Germany has Bratwurst carts!
The varieties that come from Franconia date back to the first bratwursts, and are usually heavily laden with marjoram as a seasoning. These bratwursts tend to be large and filled with coarsely ground meat which lends them an overall juicier texture and flavor. While those from the city of Corburg only use salt, pepper, nutmeg, and lemon zest. World Bratwurst Day celebrates all these and the hundreds of other varieties available, and encourages us to explore the culinary world of the Brat and see what our taste buds can find!
How to celebrate World Bratwurst Day
Celebrating World Bratwurst Day is easy! Just head on out to your local supermarket and buy yourself a few bags of Brats and invite your friends over for a delicious dinner party! Looking for something a bit more adventurous? You can always look for the local bratwurst festivals that are held every year or you could get out and organize one! For those who are looking for a culinary experience, you can also create your own Bratwursts with whatever it is you think would go well in them! World Bratwurst Day asks us to share our love of Bratwursts and to try our hand at making our own. What will you create today?
Or, if you are really feeling adventurous, you could try your hand at creating your own bratwurst in order to mark the occasion. If you take a look online, you will see that there are a lot of different homemade bratwurst recipes, and so you are bound to find one that appeals to you. A lot of people have created their own takes on this sausage, with curry bratwurst, in particular, being a very popular choice. Once you have created your own bratwurst, you can then have fun experimenting with different creations and coming up with your own flavor combinations. It is a lot of fun and you are going to have a tasty treat by the end of it. What more could you possibly want?
In fact, this is a great way to get family, friends, and loved ones together. You can have a cook-off whereby you make different types of bratwurst and everyone can try the creations and score them. You could have a prize for the winner. After all, there is nothing wrong with a bit of healthy competition, right? This is a fun way of doing something a bit different with the people you are close to, and we are sure it will put a smile on everyone’s faces and entail a few laughs along the way. All you need is some great ingredients, as well as some alcohol and you have everything that you need for a great get-together!

TikTok has given oxygen to some truly outlandish dietary suggestions. Last year, the recommendation to cook one's chicken in NyQuil trended enough that it caused the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to issue a formal statement warning against the practice. "Healthy Coke" went viral as well after a TikTok influencer claimed that mixing sparkling water with salad dressing could create a healthy alternative to drinking Coca-Cola. Claims or recommendations like these often masquerade as "hacks," but they fly in the face of scientific research - or in most cases, even sound logic.
The latest such trend that's gone viral, thanks to TikTok influencers like Pauly Long and the Liver King, is the suggestion to consume raw meat, purportedly to increase energy and improve digestion.
Can you eat raw beef?
Such benefits aren't backed by science, however, and the recommendation to eat raw beef isn't supported by any health agency either. In fact, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) specifically recommends against the practice or even sampling small amounts of raw or undercooked meat.
Not only should you not eat raw beef, it's also important to be careful when handling it. "Make sure to wash hands, separate raw meat from other foods, and promptly store leftovers to ensure safe handling of all cooked foods," advises Audra Wilson, MS, bariatric dietitian at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital.
What is dangerous about eating raw beef?
Failing to do so or choosing to eat raw meat despite warnings against the practice can lead to some potential consequences. Raw beef often contains harmful bacteria such as salmonella, campylobacter, listeria and E. coli - each of which can disrupt the body's digestive tract and cause foodborne illness. Such illnesses can lead to "food poisoning symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea," cautions Wilson. In the elderly, children, and pregnant women, she adds, such bacteria "can cause more severe illness or even death."
The only way to eliminate such risks and kill harmful bacteria associated with raw meat is by cooking it thoroughly, says Julia Zumpano, RD, a registered dietitian at Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Human Nutrition.
At what temperature is beef considered safe to eat?
That means cooking one's meat to temperatures that surpass even what some people order their steaks at in restaurants. "Rare or medium rare steaks still have potential for these bacteria," cautions Zumpano, "it's just much less when compared to raw beef."
To stay on the safe side, the USDA recommends cooking beef, bison, veal, goat, and lamb until it has an internal temperature of 145 degrees, then letting it rest for 3 minutes before cutting into it or eating. Leslie Bonci, MPH, RDN, a sports dietitian for the Kansas City Chiefs and founder of Active Eating Advice, says that ground beef and sausage needs to be cooked even longer, until it reaches an internal temperature of at least 160 degrees. "That's the only way to destroy harmful bacteria that causes food poisoning," she says.
And don't forget to use a meat thermometer when checking meat temperatures. "Accurately use a meat thermometer by inserting it into the thickest part of the beef," advises Wilson. "Using your eyes or nose alone are not effective ways to determine the doneness of meat," echoes Bonci. ___________________________________

Dear Sephiroth: (a letter to a fictional character, because why not) #63
I went to the grocery store today! And this time, I actually got some pictures of the general structure and layout! Because I know you said you wanted to know what is an ordinary life.
I don't know if these exist in your world in the same way, so maybe this won't seem very ordinary to you. But it's ordinary where I live, so here you go:
Most places will have the entrance directly in the produce section. This is where we find all our fruits and vegetables. There are lots of pictures because there are lots of different kinds of food here. Some of them come pre-cut and pre-washed; this is very convenient, and also makes it a lot easier for disabled people to cook on their own:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I got a broccoli, some asparagus, and some tomatoes from here!
There's also typically a section that contains deli meats and cheeses. These come whole in plastic packages, and then they get sliced up on special machines on request. This stuff is usually for sandwiches and the like.
Tumblr media
I didn't get anything from this section, but I wanted to show it to you anyway!
You have the other cheese sections, too, which are... not for sandwiches? I guess that's the best way I can explain it - usually the cheese is split up for that which is intended for sandwiches and that which is intended for other things. But I don't usually discriminate when it comes to cheese; these are my favorite sections of the grocery store whether they're for sandwiches or not!! Because I am a cheese goblin!! It has been written!! It is known!! Ahahaha~! 😄
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(sadly, I didn't get anything from this section today. but you can tell it's my favorite section because I have more pictures of this one particular food than of anything else!! hahahaha! 🤣🤤)
Over this way, you have the prepared foods section, the raw fish and raw meat sections, and the rest of the aisles:
Tumblr media
This is the fish section! I only get salmon from here, because almost everything else is either too expensive or it has too much mercury in it, or both! Swordfish, for example, is a fish that lots of people in my world really like, but it's ridiculously expensive, and it's got a ridiculous amount of mercury in it, too, so I avoid it. Mercury is not good for the bodies of living creatures!
Tumblr media
I did get salmon from here today. My world has farmed salmon; people say that it's bad for you in other ways, but I know that wild salmon are often not sustainably fished, and farmed salmon is cheaper anyhow, and it's very important to have omega-3 fatty acids in your diet (especially if, like me, you came out of therapy today with a massive paradigm shift; your brain is gonna need that stuff in order to build new neural connections properly; maybe I'll talk about it tomorrow)!
This section is where they put all the custom cut, pre-seasoned, and extra fancy raw meat:
Tumblr media
It's in this section that you'll find lamb, wagyu, bison, pricier cuts of beef, and pre-seasoned and pre-marinated meats.
The rest of the raw meat section contains more standardized cuts that haven't been seasoned. It's divided into "beef and sometimes lamb" (it's a real treat when they get whole lamb leg on the bone; I love to season and roast those and save the bone for broth!), pork, "turkey, chicken and chicken organs", and then "other organ meats, things for stock or bird feed, and things that are purchased relatively rarely" - think beef liver, suet, pig's feet, chicken's feet, and marrow bones for making soup stock. But they don't always have those things.
This is the "beef and sometimes lamb" section:
Tumblr media
This is the pork section:
Tumblr media
Here is the turkey, chicken, and chicken organs, and organ meats sections:
Tumblr media
I got chicken leg quarters from here! I intend to make them tomorrow, if I still have energy after my tasks and I'm not in too much pain!
Near these sections, in the middle, is where all the pre-cooked or cured meats are - things like hotdogs, cooked sausages, whole ham, and bacon. Here's an example:
Tumblr media
This is where they keep the milk and cream:
Tumblr media
And here's where they keep breads and desserts:
Tumblr media
I got a couple of surprises here, with you in mind! You'll see at the end! 😁
So far, I've only shown you the edges of the store. There are lots of aisles in the middle, which is where they keep non-perishable items, or items that aren't perishable until they're opened. Things like cereal, canned goods, dried goods, pasta, condiments, sugar, flour... stuff like that. The middle aisles contain lots of preserved or processed foods. Foods such as those aren't necessarily bad things, but it's generally important to make sure that processed foods don't make up your whole diet.
...Unfortunately, though, the reality of our world is that processed foods are generally a lot cheaper, so for most people, it's really all they can afford. I'm very lucky that I can get things like fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, and fresh fish. I remember when I was younger, and we could usually only get processed foods, meat, dairy, and bread.
In any case, here's the breakfast aisle:
Tumblr media
You can find things here like cereal, oats, pancake mix, tea, coffee, honey, syrup, and stuff that people where I live generally like to eat for breakfast.
This is the honey and syrup section.
Tumblr media
I got honey from here because we were out.
Next to it is the tea section:
Tumblr media
I didn't get anything from here, but I decided to show it to you anyway because the colorful boxes are kinda pretty!
J was with me, and he decided to snag this picture of me taking pictures for you, for some reason! Hahaha!
Tumblr media
Anyhoot! We got home and put everything away! I guess it's time for me to show you the surprises I got! I don't know what you like for dessert, but it's hard to go wrong with things like chocolate and raspberries, I think!
This one is a chocolate cheesecake with purple raspberry frosting and fresh raspberries on top!
Tumblr media
This one is a raspberry mascarpone tart thing!
Tumblr media
And this one is a chocolate truffle tart thing!
Tumblr media
...And... I know I can't give these to you. But I think you would like them if I could. If nothing else, please know that there are people in this world who would get tasty snacks for you just because they think you might like them.
Thank you for coming on this adventure with me. I know that a grocery store is probably just an ordinary thing, but you've indicated before that you just want ordinary things, and... even ordinary things can be turned into full adventures if you're carrying enough curiosity, joy, excitement, and love inside your mind. Even if you go to the same place lots of times, there is still always something new and beautiful to discover, if only you look closely at everything with fresh eyes.
You are loved because I love you. And lots of other people do, too. So don't do anything stupid to get yourself killed, got it? We need you here. We need to see you heal. We need you to be okay in the end. Please. Because there's still so much you haven't seen. There are still so many delightful and wonderful and beautiful things that you haven't experienced. Don't go around thinking like pain and misery are the only things that life can offer you. You're not done yet.
I'll write again tomorrow, so please keep yourself safe.
Your friend, Lumine

Also American—bison, elk, and alligator are commercially farmed. You can’t walk into your standard grocery store and get them, but they aren’t impossible to get. We had a burger place here in Omaha that exclusively served bison for a while.
Also maybe this is a Midwestern thing, but it’s not uncommon to know someone who hunts and will share venison steaks or sausages. When I was a kid one of the members of our church was a butcher who processed game during hunting season. He made legendary summer sausage from venison. I didn’t know summer sausage was made from any other animal until I got older.
*Basically anything that isn't a typical farm animal: cow, pig or sheep.
(Obligatory Note: I'm American and this is based on what's overall unconventional to eat in the USA.)
