Zuppa Toscana With Heritage Pork Sausage & Wild Boar Bacon
Zuppa toscana is a traditional Italian soup originating in Tuscany. It’s really easy to make and full of flavor with a little kick (if you desire) from crushed red pepper. Our heritage pork mild Italian sausage was practically made for this recipe, and it’s a match made in heaven with our wild boar bacon. This flavorful soup is delicious, creamy and satisfying with thinly sliced potatoes and chopped kale. It’s a real crowd pleaser and perfect for soaking up with breadsticks.
Ingredients:
🍴 1 lb heritage pork mild Italian sausage 🍴 Crushed red pepper 🍴 5 slices wild boar bacon, roughly chopped 🍴 1 large onion, diced 🍴 3 cloves of garlic, minced 🍴 Sea salt to taste 🍴 8 ½ cups bison bone broth 🍴 6 red potatoes, sliced thin 🍴 1 cup cream 🍴 2 cups chopped kale (stems removed). https://bit.ly/3pkPvI2

Fellow Prisoner Li, Part 4: Zuko Goes to the Time-Out Thinking Corner
Previous || Read from the beginning || Read all chapters on AO3
The prison was there. And worse than Sokka could have imagined, which was a pretty high bar, but the Fire Nation really dedicated itself to exceeding his expectations. At least it explained why Li had been acting so weird. What with his trying to scout ahead while they were still outside. And trying to get them to wait inside that empty cell while he went ahead. And then they’d found the prisoners, and… yeah. Yeah, maybe Sokka shouldn’t have let his little sister and a twelve-year-old see that. Maybe, just maybe, Li had been on to something.
Since the twelve-year-old was a fellow genocide survivor—and wow, that applied to three-fourths of their team, Sokka had never really realized that before—and. And since he was the Avatar, well. There had been glowing. And then there was a convenient hole in the ceiling for Appa to enter by.
There hadn’t been many prisoners left. Still should have been too many for one flying bison. But their added weight was not large enough to cause an issue.
It should have been. The Fire Nation was—
Sokka did not have words. He just. He didn’t.
* * *
They landed in some forest at night, somewhere outside anywhere major.
And got jump-scared by some old lady who appeared out of the trees with the creepiest grin and then promptly lost it.
“Amka? Ikiaq?” creepy lady said.
“Hama?” whispered one of their rescuees. Her smile creased her face, like leather going against its grain. “You did it. You really did. We never knew if they caught you, they told us they did but there was no body—”
And now they were at an inn. Sokka collapsed into bed, and resolved not to question the convenience of this all until morning.
* * *
He woke up too early, and yawned his way down the stairs.
“Why didn’t you go home?” someone was asking, from the kitchen.
There was a clink of cups being set down. Maybe bowls. Hama had insisted on bone broth and nothing but for last night’s dinner. To be fair, that had been all Sokka’s stomach could handle, too.
“And give them an excuse to raid again?” the innkeeper quietly scoffed. “No. I do what I can from here. Our tribe is safer without me.”
Sokka went back upstairs.
* * *
Hama offered to train Katara.
“Yes,” Katara said. And, after the hugging was done, and after a small guilty time delay to remember their mission: “Will you train Aang, too?”
“He’s a waterbender?” the last healthy southern master said, with a glance at the airbender’s tattoos.
“He’s the Avatar.”
“Yes,” Hama said.
* * *
Sokka sat down next to Li on the steps outside. The firebender looked like he was having a moment. His face had been stuck like that since mid-escape, though, so. Probably time to talk to him.
“Hey, Fellow Prisoner,” Sokka said. “Sure makes you realize how good we had it, huh?”
At which point Li opened his mouth and said words, but there was no way Sokka had heard them right.
“Sorry,” he said. “Didn’t catch that. Say again?”
“...The Fire Lord doesn’t know. There’s no way he… he wouldn’t have allowed that. I need to tell—”
“I am,” Sokka said, “going to stop you there. Li. Buddy. Fellow Prison Pal. I am aware that it is apparently a shock, that the people who burned half your face off as a kid, then beat you and threw you in Commander Muttonchop's fun-time ship prison basement for more beatings as a slightly older kid, are not the best people—”
“But…” Li interrupted, and then stopped talking, because apparently he didn’t know where he was going with that, either.
“—And it is important to me that you know I don’t blame you for this. But it’s also important that you understand that that prison wasn’t built in secret, and it wasn’t staffed by uniquely evil people. It’s… it’s been there for decades. And people just… just went to work there, and got paid for it, and it was a normal job to them, and…” Sokka took a deep breath and let it out. “...And that is what the Fire Nation is. What it does. If you weren’t on our side from the start, I would have hated you and your bending on sight, because that’s what the Fire Nation does. And I really can’t be the one consoling you through this, because it is actually a little offensive to me that there are peaceful little villages like this a day’s travel from places like that, and decent people like you who knew the place existed but you… what? Think it’s just mismanagement? How should they have locked up generations of my elders, Li?”
Katara was right. He really, really shouldn’t be the one to have these conversations with the guy. Something something he’s got a good heart and yelling at him doesn’t help with the de-eviling.
“Listen,” Sokka said, standing up. “Why don’t you… think about it. Some more. And maybe about your place on the team, okay? Because we want you here. And we trust you. But our goal isn’t to sit the Fire Lord down and enlighten him about all the things his country is doing. Our goal is to get rid of him. If that’s not for you, that’s…”
That would be a choice. But one Li could make. And Sokka would rather have him make it now than have a breakdown during some future fight.
“I’m going to go help Kirima take her walk,” Sokka said, and went back inside. The elders’ walks were all in done inside. Because it wasn’t safe for the prisoners to show their faces outside, and it wasn’t like she could walk far enough to enjoy the sunshine, anyway.
Li was still sitting there, when he closed the door.
* * *
“You,” said the innkeeper, “have been sitting here all day. I’ve always found an evening walk to lift my spirits. Help an old woman find her way in the dark? Besides, I know a better spot for thinking.”
“I… okay.”
Under the full moon, Zuko followed.
Next

Dear Sephiroth: (a letter to a fictional character, because why not) #63
I went to the grocery store today! And this time, I actually got some pictures of the general structure and layout! Because I know you said you wanted to know what is an ordinary life.
I don't know if these exist in your world in the same way, so maybe this won't seem very ordinary to you. But it's ordinary where I live, so here you go:
Most places will have the entrance directly in the produce section. This is where we find all our fruits and vegetables. There are lots of pictures because there are lots of different kinds of food here. Some of them come pre-cut and pre-washed; this is very convenient, and also makes it a lot easier for disabled people to cook on their own:
I got a broccoli, some asparagus, and some tomatoes from here!
There's also typically a section that contains deli meats and cheeses. These come whole in plastic packages, and then they get sliced up on special machines on request. This stuff is usually for sandwiches and the like.
I didn't get anything from this section, but I wanted to show it to you anyway!
You have the other cheese sections, too, which are... not for sandwiches? I guess that's the best way I can explain it - usually the cheese is split up for that which is intended for sandwiches and that which is intended for other things. But I don't usually discriminate when it comes to cheese; these are my favorite sections of the grocery store whether they're for sandwiches or not!! Because I am a cheese goblin!! It has been written!! It is known!! Ahahaha~! 😄
(sadly, I didn't get anything from this section today. but you can tell it's my favorite section because I have more pictures of this one particular food than of anything else!! hahahaha! 🤣🤤)
Over this way, you have the prepared foods section, the raw fish and raw meat sections, and the rest of the aisles:
This is the fish section! I only get salmon from here, because almost everything else is either too expensive or it has too much mercury in it, or both! Swordfish, for example, is a fish that lots of people in my world really like, but it's ridiculously expensive, and it's got a ridiculous amount of mercury in it, too, so I avoid it. Mercury is not good for the bodies of living creatures!
I did get salmon from here today. My world has farmed salmon; people say that it's bad for you in other ways, but I know that wild salmon are often not sustainably fished, and farmed salmon is cheaper anyhow, and it's very important to have omega-3 fatty acids in your diet (especially if, like me, you came out of therapy today with a massive paradigm shift; your brain is gonna need that stuff in order to build new neural connections properly; maybe I'll talk about it tomorrow)!
This section is where they put all the custom cut, pre-seasoned, and extra fancy raw meat:
It's in this section that you'll find lamb, wagyu, bison, pricier cuts of beef, and pre-seasoned and pre-marinated meats.
The rest of the raw meat section contains more standardized cuts that haven't been seasoned. It's divided into "beef and sometimes lamb" (it's a real treat when they get whole lamb leg on the bone; I love to season and roast those and save the bone for broth!), pork, "turkey, chicken and chicken organs", and then "other organ meats, things for stock or bird feed, and things that are purchased relatively rarely" - think beef liver, suet, pig's feet, chicken's feet, and marrow bones for making soup stock. But they don't always have those things.
This is the "beef and sometimes lamb" section:
This is the pork section:
Here is the turkey, chicken, and chicken organs, and organ meats sections:
I got chicken leg quarters from here! I intend to make them tomorrow, if I still have energy after my tasks and I'm not in too much pain!
Near these sections, in the middle, is where all the pre-cooked or cured meats are - things like hotdogs, cooked sausages, whole ham, and bacon. Here's an example:
This is where they keep the milk and cream:
And here's where they keep breads and desserts:
I got a couple of surprises here, with you in mind! You'll see at the end! 😁
So far, I've only shown you the edges of the store. There are lots of aisles in the middle, which is where they keep non-perishable items, or items that aren't perishable until they're opened. Things like cereal, canned goods, dried goods, pasta, condiments, sugar, flour... stuff like that. The middle aisles contain lots of preserved or processed foods. Foods such as those aren't necessarily bad things, but it's generally important to make sure that processed foods don't make up your whole diet.
...Unfortunately, though, the reality of our world is that processed foods are generally a lot cheaper, so for most people, it's really all they can afford. I'm very lucky that I can get things like fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, and fresh fish. I remember when I was younger, and we could usually only get processed foods, meat, dairy, and bread.
In any case, here's the breakfast aisle:
You can find things here like cereal, oats, pancake mix, tea, coffee, honey, syrup, and stuff that people where I live generally like to eat for breakfast.
This is the honey and syrup section.
I got honey from here because we were out.
Next to it is the tea section:
I didn't get anything from here, but I decided to show it to you anyway because the colorful boxes are kinda pretty!
J was with me, and he decided to snag this picture of me taking pictures for you, for some reason! Hahaha!
Anyhoot! We got home and put everything away! I guess it's time for me to show you the surprises I got! I don't know what you like for dessert, but it's hard to go wrong with things like chocolate and raspberries, I think!
This one is a chocolate cheesecake with purple raspberry frosting and fresh raspberries on top!
This one is a raspberry mascarpone tart thing!
And this one is a chocolate truffle tart thing!
...And... I know I can't give these to you. But I think you would like them if I could. If nothing else, please know that there are people in this world who would get tasty snacks for you just because they think you might like them.
Thank you for coming on this adventure with me. I know that a grocery store is probably just an ordinary thing, but you've indicated before that you just want ordinary things, and... even ordinary things can be turned into full adventures if you're carrying enough curiosity, joy, excitement, and love inside your mind. Even if you go to the same place lots of times, there is still always something new and beautiful to discover, if only you look closely at everything with fresh eyes.
You are loved because I love you. And lots of other people do, too. So don't do anything stupid to get yourself killed, got it? We need you here. We need to see you heal. We need you to be okay in the end. Please. Because there's still so much you haven't seen. There are still so many delightful and wonderful and beautiful things that you haven't experienced. Don't go around thinking like pain and misery are the only things that life can offer you. You're not done yet.
I'll write again tomorrow, so please keep yourself safe.
Your friend, Lumine

Bone Broth
Tis the season for soups and stews! So time to learn how to make another vital ingredient: Broth. Stock? I'm still not entirely sure what the difference between the two is, but most people use the two words interchangeably.
Most importantly, what you need for this recipe is bones.
That's the other reason this is a great time of year to make this recipe. You've probably got a turkey carcass lying around after the holidays.
Now, you can either use the bones from only one animal to make this and have either turkey broth or chicken broth, etc. But I tend to collect various bones throughout the year and freeze them until I've got a bag full. Bones I have used in the past include: chicken, turkey, duck, quail, beef, bison, pork, rabbit, and lamb. Mixing the different bones will help give your broth a more rich and complex flavor, so use what you've got. It's all fair game!
The Basic Tools and Ingredients:
A large stockpot
Bones! (enough to fill the pot)
Onion
Carrots, 2-3
Celery, 2-4 ribs and the leaves
Salt
Black peppercorns
1-3 Bay leaves
splash of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)
Water
Any other seasonings you want*
*Seasonings used can be anything and everything you want, and you're free to switch out anything I've got listed above. I've used juniper berries, ginger, fennel ribs... Basically any herb you wanna throw in is fair game.
Steps:
Take your vegetables and cut them into large chunks. When it comes to the carrots and onions, I like to leave the skins on for a stronger flavor.
Dump your bones, vegetables and seasonings in the pot and cover with water.
Add your splash of ACV. The acid in the vinegar will help break down the bones and pull out more collagen. This is the good stuff.
Bring to a boil and then lower to a simmer. This step will take hours to do, so get comfy. If you've got a big enough slow cooker, you can throw everything in there. The goal here is to leach as much flavor, collagen and nutrients out of your ingredients as possible.
Cook everything down until the broth is as dark as you want it. The longer it cooks, the more concentrated it'll get.
Remove/strain out all the solid ingredients. Put the liquids in a jar and put it in the fridge once it's cooled to room temperature.
And now you have a delicious base for any soups, stews or gravies you may want to make. Or drink it as is. If it's stewed long enough, it's also full of yummy collagen, so don't freak out if it gets solid and jello-like in the fridge. That's normal. As soon as you heat it up, it'll melt back into a liquid.
Enjoy!

I think I know what juices you have, Throné.
So no, a list will not be needed.
As for the others....
Osvald would be stuffed much like a thanksgiving turkey but he would also do well in a stew. I would never eat him, however. He works well with potatoes, onion, celery, and carrots. Broth would be Osvald bone broth, of course. Much garlic with him as he loves it just like I do. Vampire repellant.
Temenos would be prepared with a honey glaze. I think that would be nice. Much reminicent of a holliday meat. He could also go into minced meat pie. Spices such as cinamon or alspice work well for a holliday take on the Inquisitor. Perhaps pineapple will find its way with him.
Castti...hmm...a simple roast with healthy herbs. Or perhaps plated with the catch of the day for a wonderful surf n turf. I would never cook her, however. Bless her heart.
Ochette is simple as well!! Jerky. She loves jerky, I love jerky. Its a win-win! Ochette jerky works just fine as-is. Though, Ochette BBQ sounds delectable too. I'd assume she has a slight gammy taste.
Agnea....peaches. peach glazed Agnea. Or! Agnea with a brown sugar rub and a peach-raspberry sauce to dip in!! Mmmm I can already taste it now....
Partitio is very gammy. I bet hes gammier than ochette!! He's the equivalent to a nice thick bull. Or bison!! Ooghhhh but he does have the game. I think he'd make a wonderful stew. Partitio & Bull stew. Or how about Partitio stir-fry with pea pods, broccoli, peppers, onions, and zucchini? With a light amount of savory teriyaki sauce!!
And lastly Hikari. Well...Hikari i think could make a good stir-fry as well. Pea pods, peppers, onions, bean sprouts, mayybe water chestnuts (for mega crOnCh), and cabbage. I suppose he could also have mushrooms and/or zucchini. He could be savored with a teriyaki sauce or a garlic sauce. Pair him with a bowl of fluffy rice and you could feed the army the prince leads!! (Also goes well with noodles!!) Another idea is simple curry....which is just that: simple!!
Is there anyone else you're dying to think about tasting?
he didnt want the mugen burger

Might be a bit dark but.
Helob with a cannibal reader, like. Reader constantly buys the followers to eat (As helob advertises) and they hook up or something
Fucked up and evil moment bonding basically.
Aw yeah evil couple
.....
“You must hunger muchly..have this one on the house.” Helob licked his lips, a devious grin on his face as you looked upon the poor follower ensnared in his webs. Like a prize on display.
They were a bison--quite the rare species for you to come across--with face paint that indicated they were once part of a cult. Either they got lost within Silk Cradle or dissented.
Either way, they were perfect.
You smiled at Helob’s generosity and agreed to take them off his hands, leading them home after untangling them from the web. The whole way back, they thanked you constantly for saving their life, convinced that you had a kind heart.
But that’s merely the impression you gave off.
A simple ruse to gain their trust.
After arriving to your camp, the bison took notice of all the bone decorations strewn around and suddenly felt very uneasy. And they shivered slightly as the wind picked up, though they saw you starting a fire and walked over, sitting down in the grass.
As the flames flickered to life, they put their hands out and sighed in content. “Ah..such a nice fire.” They hummed, looking to see you gathering bowls and utensils. “I-I’m sorry to say..I don’t have much to offer. Only my company.”
“That’s quite alright.” You answered dryly, which made them blink in confusion.
“So um..what’s for dinner?”
“Oh nothing really...just roast beef.”
The bison could see a mischievous glint in your eyes as you looked directly at them, though they just laughed nervously, assuming you were only joking around. They had to tread carefully lest you send them back to that dreadful spider.
“O-Oh! Haha..good one. Do you need help preparing it?”
“Of course. You’ll be of great help.” A rather forced smile graced your face. “Just hold still.”
“....wait wha-?!”
Yet they were too late to process what you truly meant as you suddenly tackled them to the ground and slashed their throat open with your knife. Your grin widened as the blood spilled down their chest like a waterfall, painting your palms a sticky crimson color.
You stared down at the choking follower, who weakly tried to push you off of them. “My dear friend Helob would’ve eaten you alive..but I don’t like hearing my meals scream.”
Their eyes only widened in horror, but they struggled less and less...until they finally ceased all movements--their face left in a perpetual state of lifeless shock.
Delighted, you started to gather their blood into a bowl, licking your lips hungrily.
It made such a delicious broth. You couldn’t let a single drop go to waste.
..........
The next morning, you woke up feeling well-rested and nourished. And you exited your hut to see the sunrise. ‘That was some good minced follower meat.’ You chuckled to yourself, wondering what you should do today.
But then you noticed a little black spider scuttling towards you. You would’ve made a small morsel out of it...had you not noticed the note it seemed to carry.
‘They’re usually thieves but..this one is giving me something?’ You realized only Helob could command the spiders to do such things. So you took the note and sat down on a nearby stone, unfolding it to read it.
It turns out he was inviting you to his shop deep within Silk Cradle for breakfast.
Huh, what a generous fellow. You couldn’t refuse this offer.
You smiled and pocketed the note, gathering your things before heading there.
Although a dangerous region, you were no stranger to Shamura’s realm and knew how to sneak around its inhabitants unnoticed.
As appetizing as some of them look--especially the cultists--they usually had poison on them somehow, and you weren’t going to waste your energy trying to separate the two. Besides, the bugs that weren’t poisonous had very little nutritional value.
Only the flesh of followers could satisfy your cravings.
Eventually, you found the shop, seeing many more followers tethered to posts, wrapped in webs as they squirmed and cried. Some look famished, others sickly, and a few in their elder years, praying that they’ll pass on naturally before becoming Helob’s dinner.
In the midst, you saw the spider himself alone at a table, nibbling on a bone. But you also noticed a plate of cooked meat at the other end, along with an empty chair.
“Sorry I took too long.” You chuckled, knowing his impatience.
Helob perked up, his smile bright. “Good morning, [y/n]! Come sit and enjoy this meal. No charge for my most devoted customer.”
You eagerly sat at the table, digging into the meat. All the while, he watched you, his three eyes fixated on how you savored every piece of flesh. Every stringy tendon. You left nothing behind.
“Is there something on my face?” Sensing his gaze, you glanced up at him. “Helob?”
Blinking, he looked tense for a few seconds as he realized he was caught. He coughed nervously, failing to hide the light blush dusting his cheeks. “A-Ah, actually yes..just a little blood. Allow me to remove it.”
You were confused by what he meant, though you assumed he had a napkin and leaned forward, closing your eyes.
What you didn’t expect was to feel a kiss on your lips, and a tongue licking your cheek clean of the blood.
It all happened so fast you didn’t have time to process it as he quickly sat back down, while you stared at him dumbfounded. “Wh-Wh..What was that...?” Your face burned.
Suddenly Helob seemed rather shy as he rubbed his hands together, before he bravely looked up at you. “I’ve never met anyone like you before. We have so much in common..I feel a connection between us. Forgive me for the stares. You just look so...divine with blood all over your face.”
“..I..it’s okay.” You smiled sweetly at him, feeling your heart throb at the surprising--but welcomed--gesture of affection. “I feel the same way. Ever since I started buying from you. So is this why you summoned me here?”
He just nodded. “Do you..accept?”
“Absolutely...as long as I get future meals on the house.”
“Oh, that can be arranged..but only if you let me get a better taste next time~” He winked, making you even more flustered than before.
It seems you two are more than just business partners now. But you couldn’t be happier.

Pho and spring roll day :) I made the soup with bison shoulder, knuckle bones, pork neck and chicken breasts yesterday, then stored the meat and broth separately. The chicken only needed to cook about 45 min so I took that out first, the rest went for four hours until fall apart tender. The chicken was for the spring rolls and the bison and pork to be shredded for the soup, but I did make a bison spring roll which was great imo.

Recipe: Homemade Flautas With Shredded Bison Chuck Roast
If you’ve never had flautas before, they’re pretty much the same thing as taquitos but usually a little larger. Some say that flautas are made with flour tortillas, while taquitos are made with corn tortillas. Whatever your preference, this recipe will not disappoint. Nothing can compare to fresh, homemade flautas, especially when they’re made with quality meat. I decided to do bison chuck roast and the results were phenomenal. If you don’t have bison tallow on hand for frying, avocado oil is a good substitute. Tallow is incredible for frying because it’s stable at high temperatures and adds excellent flavor, so use it if you can. Serve with your favorite salsa, chopped cilantro and sour cream.
Ingredients:
(Makes 12 servings)
🍴 1 bison or beef chuck roast 🍴 3 cloves of garlic, minced 🍴 1 large onion, sliced in half 🍴 2.5 teaspoons ground cumin 🍴 2.5 teaspoons dried oregano 🍴 2.5 teaspoon sea salt 🍴 2.5 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper 🍴 1 ¼ cups chopped roasted green chiles (or canned) 🍴 2 cups bison bone broth 🍴 Bison tallow for frying 🍴 24 corn tortillas 🍴 Salsa, sour cream, avocado, chopped cilantro, shredded lettuce & tomato for serving. https://bit.ly/3mLwD2Z

He ain’t goin’ out like that, he ain’t goin’ out like that.
Yesterday - all day - was a complete shit show. Jack ate nothing, except the few ounces of bone broth The Wife™️ fed him via syringe.
Last night, about 9:30, we all went for a walk in case he was going to have mobility issues. When we got back inside Jack proceeded to eat about 5-6 oz of ground Buffalo. Ironically, this was 6 hours after we gave him meds that pretty much zonked him out all day.
We were shocked he ate. We’re dealing with an irritated esophagus and a mechanical blockage. The trick is to break up his food in small pieces. We know there’s a metastasized tumor somewhere, but not certain what it’s blocking.
1:00 am - restless sleeping and odd breathing.
2:15 am - short breaths, almost gasping.
3:00 am - up from his bed and pacing.
3:15 am - gave him another dose of his meds for his esophagus.
3:30 am - back to sleeping soundly.
8:00 am - morning walk for almost 40 minutes
9:15 am - ate 8 oz of ground Buffalo- wanted even more
Proceeded to sleep and go for short walks, then a trip in the car to Natural Grocers, where I then bought all of the frozen ground Buffalo they had at $14 a pound.
1:00 pm - ate 6 oz of ground Buffalo- wanted even more - sleeping now.
Jack’s got a $40 a day eating habit now. Let’s just hope he likes this 90/10 grass fed beef because that’s only $8.35 a pound.
Of course he doesn’t want to touch any of the raw dog food of rabbit, bison, or duck that we have.
We’ve pretty much reserved ourselves that he wants to go on his time. Which will probably be next week when I’m gone. Well she took care of him and his sisters when they were rescued. Only fitting that she gets to escort him on his next journey as well.

Yuki's turn for a tempt. She had to have help with the large cauldron but it was more than enough for the three thralls. Inside? Large fish braised in a broth made from their own bones and livers. A few potato roots to add heartiness to it. "For the try not to eat challenge"
Pudd is half-dozing against a rock, patting her overly full belly. she cracks one eye open trying to decide if she has room for soup.
.....
.....
.....
Pudd has a little room for soup.
Grike is still munching on roast bison bones, and shows no interest in the soup. While Strewth’s sole focus is on his fellow thralls.
“...Neither of you have any shame. any at all?”
Grike responds with a belch.
Strewth breathes slowly out his nose.
“...is that river fish?”
Pudd nods eagerly, finishing her bowl then refilling it and passing it to strewth.
The captain growls as he downs the soup, making deep groans more suited for mating than meat.
“Oh, that IS good.”
Pudd: 5/5
Grike: 2/5
Strewth: 1/5.
Punishment time.

“Everybody Has a Heartache: A Blues” by Joy Harjo
In the United terminal in Chicago at five on a Friday afternoon The sky is breaking with rain and wind and all the flights Are delayed forever. We will never get to where we are going And there’s no way back to where we’ve been. The sun and the moon have disappeared to an island far from anywhere. Everybody has a heartache — The immense gatekeeper of Gate Z–100 keeps his cool. This guardian of the sky teases me and makes me smile through the mess, Building up his airline by stacking it against the company I usually travel: Come on over to our side, we’ll treat you nice. I laugh as he hands me back my ticket, then he turns to charm The next customer, his feet tired in his minimum wage shoes. Everybody has a heartache — The man with his head bobbing to music no one else can hear has that satisfied Feel — a full belly of sweet and a wife who sings heartache to sleep. In his luggage (that will be lost and never found) is a musty dream of flying Solo to Africa, with a stop on the return to let go the stories too difficult to Carry home. He’ll take off his shoes to walk in a warm, tropical sea. He’ll sing to the ancestors: Take me home to mama. No one cooks like her. But all the mamas worked to the bone gone too young. Broken by The Man. Everybody has a heartache — Everyone’s mouthing fried, sweet, soft and fat, While we wait for word in the heart of the scrambled beast. The sparkle of soda wets the dream core. That woman over there the color of broth did what she was told. It’s worked out well as can be expected in a world Where she was no beauty queen and was never seen, Always in the back of someplace in the back — She holds the newest baby. He has croup. Shush, shush. Go to sleep, my little baby sheepie. He sits up front of her with his new crop of teeth. Everybody has a heartache — This man speaks to no one, but his body does. Half his liver is swollen with anger; the other half is trying To apologize — What a mess I’ve made of history, he thinks without thinking. Mother coming through the screen door, her clothes torn, Whimpering: It’s okay baby, please don’t cry. Don’t cry. Baby don’t cry. And he never cries again. Everybody has a heartache — Baby girl dressed to impress, toddles about with lace on this and ruffle on that — Her mother’s relatives are a few hundred miles away poised to
welcome. They might as well live on a planet of ice cream. She’s a brand new wing, grown up from a family’s broken hope. Dance girl, you carry our joy. Just don’t look down. Everybody has a heartache — Good-looking punk girl taps this on her screen to a stranger she has never seen: Just before dawn, you’re high again beneath a marbled sky, I was slick fine leather with a drink in my hand. Flying with a comet messenger nobody sees. The quick visitor predicts that the top will be the bottom And the bottom will flatten and dive into the sea. I want to tell her: You will dine with the lobster king, and You will dance with crabs clicking castanets. You will sleep- Walk beyond the vestibule of sadness with a stranger You have loved for years. Everybody has a heartache — This silence in the noise of the terminal is a mountain of bison skulls. Nobody knows, nobody sees — Unless the indigenous are dancing powwow all decked out in flash and beauty We just don’t exist. We’ve been dispersed to an outlaw cowboy tale. What were they thinking with all those guns and those handcuffs In a size for babies? They just don’t choose to remember. We’re here. In the terminal of stopped time I went unsteady to the beat, Driven by a hungry spirit who is drunk with words and songs. What can I do? I have to take care of it. The famished spirit eats fire, poetry, and rain; it only wants love. I argue: You want love? Do you even know what it looks like, smells like? But you cannot argue with hungry spirits. I don’t know exactly where I’m going; I only know where I’ve been, I want to tell the man who sifted through the wreck to find us here In the blues shack of disappeared history — I feel the weight of his heart against my cheek. His hand is on my back pulling me to him in the dark, to a place No soldiers can reach. I hear the whoop-cries of warriors calling fire for a stand Against the brutality of forgetfulness — Everybody has a heartache — We will all find our way, no matter fire leaping through holes in jump time, No matter earthquake, or the breaking of love spilling over the dreck of matter In the ether, stacking one burden Against the other — We have a heartache.
