Meet You At the Blossom: Betrayal and Misunderstanding to create conflict (EP 7 – 8)

It was really hard to watch these two episodes. I know that characters need to experience hardships so they can growth and make a choice.Only in this way it will drive the story forward. However, knowing it doesn't make it easy to watch. I became attached to these characters, especially Xiao Bao so it was sad to see him so down, lost and sad. At the beginning of the story, I said that Xiao Bao was the archetype of the Fool. I felt he was The Fool because he was freer and happier than those who have the wisdom of what is going in the world. However, after episode 6, Xiao Bao couldn't keep wearing blinders. Until this moment, he truly believed in Huai En and their love. He even promised him he would forgive him for anything (except cheating) but Xiao Bao is young. Before this event, he never experienced betrayal. Huai En and his father's enemies are more clever than what they seem to be. They easily understood how using Xiao Bao and making him believe to be betrayed would be their best weapon against them.

At first, there was the disbelief of such a betrayal. Then, Xiao Bao felt the shock and sadness. After that, there was a layer of self-doubt “Was it always a lie?”. It's not only the betrayal that hurts, but it's also the harm to his own self-perception and self-confidence. Xiao Bao doubts of everything he thought was true: his love, his family history, his social status and beliefs. He admitted to Su Yin, these last events and being poisoned as a consequence of his foolishness, made him feel stupid for the first time in his life. Xiao Bao knew he was acting life a little fool, but he never believed he was a real fool. It was just what he thought he should do as a young rich lad. Now he is blaming himself for everything he did.

However, Xiao Bao is not the only one who has to experience of form of betrayal. While Xiao Bao never had to be careful of others before, Huai En has always known he was not free to do or have what he wants. His father always considered him as a weapon he can use to get revenge for his mother. Huai En has always known his father never really considered him as anything else, but he tried to compromise with him to be with his lover. When Xiao Bao's sister was crying because she wanted to be with her brother and she refused to be considered as Xue Lianqing, she only stopped when Huai En told her she had no other choice. However, I believe what really convinced her was when he told her, he was going to bring her brother and her parents so they could be a family. Huai En also desperately wants to have this “family” with Xiao Bao. Love makes everyone a bit crazy. Huai En knew you couldn't trust his father, but because of his love for Xiao Bao he still believed he would be able to be with him. He craftily prepared his plan and never thought he would not be able to get it. I believe Huai En never really failed when it came to make sure to reach his goal.

This time he made two mistakes: firstly, he trusted his father's word and secondly he forgot to be trustful to Xiao Bao. He tried to prevent the second mistake by making Xiao Bao promising him to forgive anything he would do, but it only works if Xiao Bao still believes in his love. Huai En is a victim of all the lies he had to make to protect Xiao Bao (the less he knew, the best it was). As Huai En wasn't truthful enough Xiao Bao escaped with Su Yin and this news will create some misunderstanding. While Xiao Bao is experiencing a drop of self-perception and self-confidence because of the betrayal, Huai En might lead him into irrational behavior (mostly to Su Yin, maybe to Xiao Bao, but we already saw it could be tamed with intense sex so I wouldn't worry to much for our little fool).

They are all kind of forms of betrayal and they all depends on the characters. They create a strong emotional reaction for the viewers, but also the characters. It started with a small thing at the beginning for Xiao Bao. It was just not telling him the whole truth (with more or less good reasons), but it will have long-lasting repercussions, not only for Xiao Bao and Huai En's romance, but also for the other characters. It already started. Xiao Bao's family was hurt, they lost their privileges and they now depend on the help of others. Xiao Bao as a result also got poisoned by Xiao Bin who found here a way of getting revenge for what he considered was an unfairness he had to deal with because of Xiao Bao. The poison is making Xiao Bao suffers any time it gets cold. The cure is of course super hard to find. Xiao Bao can only rely on Su Yin's help to find it which of course will lead to more problems as Huai En has no idea about the poison. He just was led to believe Xiao Bao refused to be with him and preferred to be with another person. Misunderstanding will also play a huge part in the coming episodes. Mixed with betrayal it will be the perfect cocktail to create more hardships for Huai En and Xiao Bao. The problem is that Xiao Bao didn’t fulfill his part of the oath he made to Huai En. Also, he was known to be a flirt and Huai En already saw how Su Yin was close to Xiao Bao. I don’t doubt it’s going to be a real problem and will delay the time where they will be able to really talk about what happened and what they want.

I would say the betrayals they both experienced will be a conflict that will spread, like ripples on a pond. It’s hard to forget even when forgiveness is sought and it will give us the drama will all need to watch.

PJO SPOILERS!!!

Am I the only one who thinks some people are being a little harsh on Grover for "snitching" on Percy in Episode 1? I see some people saying Grover's character has been "ruined" by having him "betray" Percy and I'm just over here thinking that gaslighting your best friend for literal MONTHS on end is just as much, if not a worse betrayal then snitching on said friend in order to get them out of the danger zone immediately. Either way you look at it, Grover betrayed Percy in both versions, and honestly I think Grover's snitching was the kinder route to take; at least Percy wasn't questioning his own sanity for months, but a few hours.

And another thing too is that I'm kind of glad their friendship seems a little tense right now in the show, since I felt like in the book, Percy just sort of brushes off being literally lied to and gaslit by Grover for months. Don't get me wrong, I adore their friendship so much but it always kind of bothered me that they never really TALKED about the gaslighting period and how alone that made Percy feel to have even his best friend say everything that happened was all in his head. I don't know, I always just wanted there to be a scene where they actually talked about it and reconcile. So I'm hoping that since the show seems to be putting tension between Percy and Grover right now, that we'll hopefully get a moment of closure and reconciliation between them.

( @restlesslythought the comments have character limits so I’m giving more thoughts in response in a post, I hope you don’t mind!)

Roier isn’t thinking about ‘punishing’ Bad at all. It’s not a matter of spite, Roier isn’t plotting some sort of revenge, not that we’ve seen, he’s not trying to make sure Bad doesn’t take care of an egg - he just doesn’t trust Bad, to a further degree than ever before. And it’s not because of his depression or misery, or general lack of trust with most people, it is directly because of Purgatory. (Here’s more of my thoughts in response to other comments about the breakdown of trust with Bad due to Purgatory, and how serious it is to Roier)

Bad spent the entire time in Purgatory burning bridges. Roier watched as Bad spawnkilled Red team before he joined them, especially upset when Jaiden was the main target. He was there when Bad went back on the deal between blue and green to keep their score 50/50, when they were all under the assumption that the losing team could die permanently. Then he was with Red when Bad tried to torment them, tried to get around the spawn killing rule, tried to take offense at getting killed (when he was the one attacking them, the one in their base stealing).

I could spend much longer listing out specific things that Bad in particular did, not just Blue team in general, which is why the mistrust is so specific to Bad.

And Roier hasn’t been in a good spot since even before Purgatory, only made worse by its events, by the fact Cellbit isn’t back yet and he has a new child to take care of. But he hasn’t been wallowing, he’s been busy - rebuilding Bobby’s city with Pepito, taking care of Pepito and Leo, keeping an extra eye on Pepito because he doesn’t trust the fact that the new eggs came right after Purgatory because now it seems like everyone’s forgetting Purgatory with how it’s being brushed over. He’s been angry, furious, at the fact that everyone is just brushing over Purgatory. At the Federation hardly addressing it and the lack of searches for the missing members and the suspicions around the new eggs and the way Bad just comes up and talks to him as if nothing had happened.

(and he’s been planning something, something he only told Leo about, that’s vague and unknown, and assumedly is meant to try and find the missing members - his missing family - who didn’t make it to the boat, but that’s not entirely relevant - it’s just been his focus outside of Pepito and repairing Bobby’s City)

He has reasons to be angry. Reasons to distrust Bad. Even if there’s never been any cause to think Bad would have anything but the eggs best interests in mind. Even if Bad has taken care of Leo and had watched out for all of the eggs. It’s not about if Bad cares about the eggs - it’s about Roier not trusting bad, and being protective as an extension of that.

It’s all kinda moot at this point - Foolish logged on today after all, and reunited with Leo. Whatever conflict that could have arisen from Bad caring for Leo without Roier being there is always just going to be speculation. But I still think there could have been, because of the extent Roier has been avoiding Bad and having Leo and Pepito avoid him, due to his mistrust.

highschool au yata and fushimi being forced to join the most bizarre clubs such as the dungeons and dragons club with the unsufferable "well actuallty-" nerds and the "anime club" only with guys who watch a.. different type anime

Imagine they’re like required to join a club and so they keep trying to pick the weird ones in the hope that no one else will be there and they can just hang out together, and instead they end up getting dragged into strange club activities. Like a Gakuen K style AU where there are dorms that everyone stays in, since they live on campus it’s considered an expectation that every student will join a club. Yata and Fushimi are freshmen who came from the same middle school where they were members of the going home club (well, Yata tried to join sports clubs his first year but everyone ignored him or complained about him, then he befriended Fushimi who refused to join any clubs so they would just go home together and hang out by themselves). Yata figures joining a club might not be too bad right, Fushimi clicks his tongue and grumbles about what a stupid requirement this is. Yata considers trying a sports club again but decides not to, because he knows Fushimi will struggle finding a club and Yata can’t leave Fushimi on his own.

Yata’s like well okay what if we find a club that doesn’t have anyone in it. He starts looking through the posted list of clubs and is like here, some kind of gaming club for nerds, you’ll fit right in Saruhiko. Fushimi doesn’t particularly find the idea of tabletop rpg club interesting but thinks it likely won’t be popular so he can just slack off and not do any club activities. When they join though they’re immediately grabbed by a group of nerds who place a bunch of game guides in front of them and expect them to memorize all the fantasy races and classes. When Yata haltingly tries to ask isn’t this a game club one of the kids pushes up his glasses and says this is an rpg club, actually. Yata’s like hey Saruhiko these guys kinda remind me of you and Fushimi tells him to shut up.

Next they try the anime club, Yata’s like well I like anime and sometimes you watch with me. When they step into the classroom though the door is covered by a black sheet and they’re hustled through by some classmates, told that they must swear to absolute secrecy. Yata’s doesn’t get why they have to swear to secrecy to watch anime but sure fine, which is when he finds himself face to face (or chest) with an extremely busty, half-clothed anime figurine of a girl in a barely-there bikini. Yata’s stuttering and getting flustered as it’s explained to him that this is their queen Marin-chan, here’s a clear file folder of her in her bikini for you to keep. Fushimi decides to remove Yata from the situation before he dies of blood loss.

They go back to look at the club list and Yata sees one for a Ninja Club, maybe that will be cool. There’s also a Anything Goes Hobby club, that one might be good too. They decide to split up, Fushimi will check out the ninja club and Yata will go to the hobby club. Fushimi steps into the ninja club, takes one look at student council president Munakata sitting there at a desk hopefully waiting for new club members and turns right back around. Yata has better luck, upperclassman Totsuka is super happy to have someone to help him with his hobbies like baking, cheese making and constructing the Taj Mahal out of toothpicks. Fushimi is less interested but Totsuka figures if they don’t like hobbies the Red club is always looking for members, and now Yata is interested. (Meanwhile Munakata makes a note to learn more about the adorable underclassman who was clearly too shy to join the Ninja Club, he seems intriguing.)
