a beginners guide to pilates

🎀 what is pilates?
pilates is a form of strength training exercise that focuses on low to medium impact movements to improve muscle tone, stability, endurance, and mobility. pilates also focuses more on the smaller muscles of the body compared to traditional strength or weight training.
🎀 benefits of pilates
including the benefits that exercise generally brings, pilates:
improves mind-body connection and body control
improves active flexibility and mobility
works the core, improving stability
improves coordination and balance
reduces mental and physical stress
works muscles that can be neglected in our daily lives
treats and prevents body pain, including menstrual pain
teaches you how to pair your breath with your body
keeps the joints healthy without putting pressure on them
🎀 where to start
while you can absolutely start with studio or reformer classes, you can also do pilates routines on youtube! i recommend move with nicole and dansique fitness. if you want to get your cardio in as well, i absolutely recommend eleni fit. her workouts are some of the best i’ve ever tried!
🎀 personal tips
keep your core in mind. core strength is a major benefit of pilates because each movement requires at least a mild amount of core work to keep your body stable, so do your best to keep the engagement throughout.
start slow. pilates movements can take a while to fully understand and it can take a while to build the mind-body connection, so don’t push yourself too far in the beginning. your coordination will improve over time!
don’t underestimate it! while the movements are generally slower than other types of exercise, you will work your muscles just as much and in a way they may not have been worked before. sometimes i even find pilates more difficult than hiit or weights!

haii!!! im studying psychology aswell omg we’re twinsies!!! can i ask where to start with pilates? i know theyre a bit challenging and ive never really tried !): i could totally just look it up but id love to hear from someone in the community if you dont mind!! 🌸 have an amazing day/night!!!
Hihi !! Yes! I saw we both studied psych and thought you were super cool :3 I also like pink and horror things!
I started Pilates a little over a year ago and it’s definitely been a journey. For staters I do mat Pilates rather than reformer, and I do at home workout rather than taking classes! I mostly follow YouTube videos because they guide you through the exercises and make it easier to check your positioning.
I personally watch MovewithNicole, she’s is a little advanced so depending on mobility I recommend watching her beginner videos and just keep in mind it’s ok to take break or modify workouts if you need! You definitely shouldn’t feel discouraged if some things are a little hard at first. It’ll be all the more rewarding to overcome the challenges in the end :3
Tips:
First and foremost always stretch before and after! I didn’t realize how much this affected my workouts until recently but it really gets myself ready to workout and helps with soreness afterwards. Plus it gives you a chance to listen to music before your workout! I personally focus on flexibility and dynamic stretches as my mobility isn’t the best due to injuries. Anything to get my hips, hamstrings, and back ready for the workout helps me!
My biggest tips for starting out is to make sure your form is correct as to not cause any unnecessary discomfort and try to repeat videos. I feel like every time I rewatch a workout I do something even better than before that I didn’t realize I wasn’t doing. It also gives you a chance to master certain exercises and find a basis for what muscles you want to work on the most!
Breath control is another really big aspect of Pilates. Because oxygen is what helps our muscles a work the way they need to, breathing properly and deep enough when exercising is super important for both effectiveness and soreness. This is another reason I prefer to watch guided videos because Nicole walks you through everything! When starting out breathing might feel really insignificant but as you progress it will make a huge difference.
My last tip is to have fun and romanticize it! Cute outfits, bows, and a pretty mat are definitely small ways I keep myself motivated. I really like the blogalaties line but there are a ton of other coquette clothing options out there! Price can also be a factor in this so just know some days I wear Arie flare leggings and other days I just wear pajama shorts and a band tee. Whatever makes you motivated to put the work in is what good for you!
I hope this helped you out some!! If you have any other questions please feel free to ask :3 I hope you have a great day/night too!! <3

Understanding the Distinction: Gym vs. Fitness Studio
Are you looking to start or continue your fitness journey but unsure whether to join a gym or fitness studio? While both of these settings offer spaces for exercise, there are essential differences that you should be aware of before making a decision. Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast or a beginner, understanding these dissimilarities can help you find the best fit for your needs and goals. This article will explore the differences between a gym and a fitness studio to help guide your decision-making process.

What’s the Difference Between a Gym and a Fitness Studio?
1) Setting:
The first and most glaring difference between a gym and a fitness studio is their set up. A gym is usually a large facility with a vast floor plan that hosts multiple types of equipment, ranging from free weights to cardio machines, and often includes amenities such as locker rooms and showers. On the other hand, a fitness studio tends to be more compact, featuring specialized equipment, such as Pilates reformers, yoga mats, or even stationary bikes. Therefore, if you prefer a diverse range of exercise equipment, a gym in Coquitlam is the best option; if you’re looking for group training with personalized attention, a fitness studio might be the way to go.
2) Community:
The second factor that distinguishes a gym from a fitness studio is the sense of community found in each setting. A gym is likely to have a more diverse clientele, including those whose fitness levels and objectives differ significantly. Some people thrive in this environment and enjoy the social aspects of a gym; others may find the environment intimidating or impersonal. On the other hand, fitness studios in Coquitlam tend to foster a more intimate sense of community, especially those specializing in one or two types of activities. This can create a supportive environment for individuals who prefer to work out with like-minded individuals.
3) Cost:
Another significant difference between a gym and fitness studio is the cost involved. Membership fees for a gym vary depending on the location, amenities, and duration of the membership. In contrast, fitness studio rates tend to be higher, reflecting the specialized nature and personal attention of the services they offer. If you plan to work out frequently, a gym membership may be more economical for you. However, if you prefer personalized instruction and attention, the higher cost of a fitness studio may be worth it.
4) Style of Training:
Fitness studios and gyms also tend to cater to different styles of workouts. For example, if your goal is to gain muscle and lift heavy weights, a gym would be the better fit for your needs. On the other hand, if you want to improve your flexibility and posture, a yoga or Pilates studio would be an excellent option. Additionally, fitness studios are likely to offer specialized group fitness classes like barre, dance, or boxing that are not often available in a traditional gym. If you’re looking to diversify your workout routine or seek a novel activity, a fitness studio might be the way to go.
5) Personalized Attention:
Finally, the level of personal attention you receive while working out is essential to consider. Many fitness studios prioritize personal attention and tailored workout routines, allowing clients to achieve their desired results more efficiently. Gyms, on the other hand, operate on a more self-directed model. While some gyms offer personal training services for an additional fee, it may not be as tailored as the services offered at a fitness studio.

Conclusion: Gym vs. Fitness Studio
In conclusion, there is no universal answer to whether joining a gym or fitness studio is the best choice. It comes down to your personal preferences, fitness goals, and budget. We hope that our discussion of the differences between a gym and fitness studio has helped you choose the fitness environment that best suits your needs. Remember, whether you choose a gym or fitness studio, the most important part is finding an environment that motivates you to achieve your fitness objectives. Ultimately, if you enjoy your workout and are motivated to continue towards your goals, that’s the most important factor!

Pilates – A Helpful Guide for Beginners

Pilates is a body weight-based exercise program that incorporates breathing and alignment. It is suitable for people of all ages and sizes, and research shows it has plenty of benefits.
Joseph Pilates created Pilates during World War I to help soldiers maintain fitness and recover from injuries. In 1926, he immigrated to the United States and opened a New York City fitness studio, introducing Pilates as a method for building strength, flexibility, and overall well-being.
Today, Pilates comprises over 600 exercises, ranging from beginner-friendly moves requiring only a mat to advanced workouts incorporating equipment like resistance bands and Pilates rings. For those ready to take it up a notch, machines like Reformers add resistance through springs and pulleys, enhancing workout intensity.
Whichever level a person doing Pilates is at, the fundamentals remain the same - controlled muscle movement and breath work. Workout sessions often last 45 minutes to an hour. A person begins with simple exercises and then works their way up to the harder ones, transitioning smoothly from one exercise to the next.
Exercises primarily work the core and back muscles while also strengthening the arms, legs, and shoulders. A person must fully concentrate on each exercise, controlling their breathing and muscle movement.
An example of a Pilate exercise is the single leg stretch. To perform this exercise, lie on the back with the knees bent and shine parallel to the floor. Then, lift the head and chest off the ground while at the same time extending the right leg to make a 45-degree angle from the floor at the hip. Then, lift the left knee toward the chest and grab it with the right hand. At the same time, grab the left ankle with the left hand. Hold this position for a moment before resuming the start position and doing it again with the legs alternated.
Studies have linked Pilates to numerous physical and mental health benefits, including enhanced core strength, improved posture, and better flexibility. It also alleviates lower back pain, supports weight loss, and boosts mental well-being, making it a comprehensive approach to a healthier lifestyle.
One especially good thing about Pilates is that it is a low-impact exercise and hence is suitable for most people, including seniors, pregnant women, and people living with conditions like high blood pressure. However, they will have to consult their doctors before beginning Pilates training. Once they have their doctor's approval, their Pilates instructor will draw up a suitable program for them, taking into account their physical abilities and skill level.
For other people, Pilates is much easier to begin. All that's needed is to walk into a wellness center that has Pilates classes, speak with a qualified instructor, schedule a class, and show up ready to learn. Many wellness centers offer beginner mats from which to start Pilates classes.
Once a beginner is competent with the basics of Pilates, they can start their regular Pilates sessions. Three Pilates sessions a week is ideal. Some practitioners recommend including cardio exercises like running or swimming in a weekly Pilates exercise program.
