Ngl, some people's "I wasn't allowed to be an irredeemably evil shitbird, ergo Veilguard is not an RPG" argument is extra funny to me, because I don't actually think there is a conceivable narrative in which, if your Rook did something as objectively amoral as selling people into slavery, they wouldn't wake up the next morning floating untethered in the raw Fade with Neve's bootprint on their ass, and the Lighthouse no more than a distant blip on the edge of their vision.

Like there is a lot to get into here that I just don't have the time or the spoons to go through, but I'd argue that one of the biggest strengths of Veilguard's writing is that the main cast are all very well-defined characters with their own sets of morals, ethics, and goals, and they collectively have more than enough of a backbone that if Rook did something that proved them incapable of leading the team to the story's climax and/or proved them to be of no benefit to them, they wouldn't fail their quest: they would just swiftly and efficiently get rid of Rook.

The apple incident actually goes different somehow and before Nightmare can eat enough apples to transform Dream catches him and teleports them to another au. He doesn't know how he did that, he just knows he wanted to save his brother and that's the only thing that mattered, but now they can't come back. They're far from home in an au they don't know and can't go back because they don't know how. But their home is destroyed anyway, the tree is dead, their mother is dead, they both felt it. Dream doesn't blame his brother for any of it, it wasn't his fault, he knew it even when Nightmare didn't.

From that point, the two twins travel to find their place in the multiverse with no knowledge of who they are supposed to be now, they never stay apart, they don't want to have opposite roles like they did before, that led to a disaster. So they're always together, always touching, or at least can always see each other. When they walk they hold hands, they sleep hugging, they shower together. Even if a task or activity seems boring to one they will always go if the other wants, for example some festivals they encounter in aus, Dream always wants to go see and talk to people but Nightmare prefers to stay behind, so he just holds on to Dream's hand the entire time and walks around with him quietly, Dream pays no mind, he's just happy he can feel Nightmare at all times and doesn't force him to interact with others if he doesn't want to or Nightmare wants to explore the woods or try hunting to get some food (they don't need food but it's good to taste something every couple years) and Dream is scared but he will always go, wrapped around Nightmare's arm or hidden behind him, digging his fingertips in Nightmare's shoulders.

They only have each other, they can only trust each other. No one else could ever understand them. They treat each other almost like the same person, or a set of two that's never supposed to separate, that will stop working if separated. They're trying to be equal to each other in every way possible to never have that imbalance they experienced in Dreamtale. They share everything, books, clothes, food. The hypothetical friends they might have made think it's weird and are annoyed that they can never have alone time with one of them but the twins are always so confused or get defensive

They never stay friends for long anyway, either because of the twins' inseparable nature or their constant travel making them distant. They don't need them. They only need each other. They will never be apart again. No one will separate-
