Hellbound (Season 2)
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2024
Hellbound (Season 2, 2024, South Korea)
Director: Yeon Sang Ho
Writer: Yeon Sang Ho & Choi Gyu Seok (based on their own webtoon)
Mini-review:
I feel like I'm one of the few people who loved the first season of Hellbound. It used an original and terrifying concept to showcase a fascinating exploration of themes like religious fanaticism, sectarianism and media manipulation. And this second (and final?) season delivers the goods once again. Yeon Sang Ho continues to be a master director of action scenes, plus the performances he gets from this cast are simply superb. On top of that, the CGI is much better than it was in the first one; I'm glad they made an effort to improve on that. I'm sure many people will stay mad at the show for refusing to give clear answers until the very end, but I think that makes the viewer feel the same chaos as the characters. If this is really the end, I have to say I really enjoyed what this dark fantasy had to offer.

Queen of Tears
Tumblr media
This series is not perfect, but it is still good. It has a solid storyline, and great characters. Hong Hae In and Baek Hyun Woo have been married for 3 years and the love that had united them at the beginning seems to have disappeared in their distance and silence after a miscarriage that broke their hearts. When Baek Hyun Woo finally has the courage to present the divorce papers to Hong Hae In, she tells him she has a tumor and doesn't have much time left. His decision to stay with her gives them an unexpected chance at finding that love that had united them once. Family interactions between their very different families questions dynamics and help characters grow.
I like the fact that they didn't take the easy way out with our main antagonist. The story in itself is really good and I loved it, however, production was a bit careless with details that were too big to miss: Hae In's operation - how can a person with a brain tumor have a surgery with her hair intact. Or Hyun Woo's neck injury suddenly disappearing in a second, ext. These kind of details show some careless oversight. But we can forgive them - we laugh it off and keep watching to see what happens next.
I liked it and recommend it.

Castaway Diva. 7
Story: 6-7
Acting: 10
Chemistry: 8
Comparable to: Twenty Five, Twenty One (kdrama); Thirty but Seventeen (kdrama)
Total mixed feelings about this. First half, loved. Second half, a huge disappointment dumpster fire. I hate to say the kids in the first two episodes were better then their counterparts/as the adults. Storyline was exciting at first. Loved the whole island bits. I actually wish they explored a tad more with the younger version of Mok Ha (Lee Re) when she was stuck on the island. Honestly even with 12 episodes the story just drag on. Most characters were in my opinion cliche. Didn’t really care for Park Eun Bin’s take (whoever directed her in doing so) on being stuck with emotions of a teenagers personality. It got old very quickly. It didn’t help that both main leads had zero chemistry together either. Overall the whole series started oh my gosh this is great to meh…..

DRAMA REVIEW | Queen of Tears (2024)
Tumblr media
Queen of Tears strongest point are the performances, directing and cinematography, there's no doubt about this. Scriptwriter Park Ji Eun has a talent for teaming up with great talents, particular actors, and that's in my opinion the main reason why her drama are usually so successful. She manages to write really interesting and endearing characters, and put them in entertaining situations that grasp the attention of the viewer.
The casting director did a particular excellent job on this one because every single character was cast to perfection, every actor and actress fitting into the role as if it was written for them.
I am fascinated by the way scriptwriter Park Ji Eun has managed to mix genres in one drama, because Queen of Tears is a dark comedy, makjang, comedy, romance and melodrama all in one. This screenwriter is not stranger to making a successful and entertaining kdrama, but if you are looking for something that will dwell into the deeper reasons as to why the leads' marriage crumble, logic and cohesive editing, this story might not be for you.
Queen of Tears strongest point is the way both families come together, learning to respect and love each other but apart from that the drama is developed at a surface level. The scripts lean hard on the other genres which is perfectly fine but there were times when I was frustrated at the desiciones being made, the complete waste of time when the families are running against the clock to save one of their own AND the family's business, etc. This is when I think Queen of Tears is a lot like other Park Si Eun's kdramas: they start strong but run out of material towards the second half of the episode, almost as if she introduce a bunch of plotlines with proper solutions to a few of them.
Overall, I found Queen of Tears to be a really entertaining watch to disconnect from reality.

Family Matters
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2024
Family Matters (2024, South Korea)
Directors: Kim Gok & Kim Sun
Writer: Kim Jung Min
Mini-review:
Started this because of the cast and... that's basically the main reason why I finished it. The last two episodes were really good but, before that, I spent a lot of time just scratching my head. It felt like the show was simply setting things up for what's to come, so it never gave enough information to properly tie its many plot threads, nor did it follow a clear logic. And it was pretty obvious that a lot of stuff was left on the cutting room floor in order to reduce the initial 8-episode order. Furthermore, its sense of humor was very hit-or-miss; sometimes I laughed out loud and others I was like "wtf". Still, the cast is fantastic, and like I said before, I enjoyed the final episodes a lot, so I would probably come back for a second season of Family Matters.

Kdrama script idea : Episodes 1 - 2
Episode 1
A middle-aged woman, Han Ae Kyung (Shin Ae Ra), loses her three children and her husband to a car accident. A year later, missing the sound of laughter in her house, she puts out a notice for a boarding house where she rents out the three rooms she had to be able to take care of her depression and her longing to take care of someone. Since she lives in a poor and old neighbourhood, it's not an apartment but a double-storey house, only three people respond : Song Yu Jin (Bae Yu Jin), a half black half Korean model aspirant, Meera Prasad (Nidhi Agarwal), the third daughter of long-time Indian diplomats in Korea and in her graduating year at Seoul National University, and Julie Baek (Julie Han), a Korean-American Arts student at Hong Ik University.
They move in with her, and a lot of fun chaos ensures due to the clash of not only cultures, but also generations. One day, Meera notices a mysterious male figure at night, and one night, follows him up to his apartment above Ae Kyung's. Ae Kyung says that she had rented out the place to a young woman named Min Soo Ji (Choi Soo Ji), but that woman left the house so no one lives there. After Yu Jin also sees a mysterious man enter the house above, Yu Jin and Meera make it their mission to find the man's identity.
Episode 2
One day, while Ae Kyung is outside in the market, suddenly, a woman knocks at their door, asking to be hidden for a few hours. She turns out to be Shin Ja Yeon (Ha Hee Ra), a former TV announcer and the wife of the CEO of a construction company. After her marriage, she was not seen in the public eye until she accused him of adultery, robbery, and severe domestic violence, and won the case in a landslide victory. She got to know that her husband has put a hit on her so he doesn't lose his money, and so Ja Yeon is on the run. Luckily, no one knows her face anymore except the people around her husband and her in-laws.
The girls shelter Ja Yeon in the house and try to phone Ae Kyung to inform her, but she's not picking up the phone. Ja Yeon sees one of her husband's company cars in the road and holes herself up in the bathroom, and Ja Yeon's husband, CEO Kang Seung Ho (Cheon Ho Jin), arrives at the house door just as Ae Kyung arrives. He asks if Ae Kyung has seen a woman that looks like Ja Yeon here in the street; luckily, Ae Kyung doesn't snitch even after seeing Ja Yeon's shoes in the entrance of her house. She doesn't say a word and enters in, and locks the door and orders all the windows to be closed.
Ja Yeon, who locked herself into the bathroom cannot answer to Ae Kyung's calls, and the girls bust down the door of the bathroom just o find her in the midst of a panic attack. They manage to calm her down, and Ae Kyung demands an explanation. After Ja Yeon calms down, she explains her situation, and asks to stay just a night so she can make arrangements for her escape. Ae Kyung agrees reluctantly, worring about another mouth to feed, when they turn on the news and see the news that "Shin Ja Yeon" has apparently been killed in a car accident in the Han River, and that suspicions are on Kang Seung Ho. The real Ja Yeon is very confused, but gets a call from one of her assistants that they planted this story so she can live in peace. She first berates them for not telling her, and is still worried that she might not be able to move out of the country as was her original plan. She needs to fly to either Europe or Great Britain, where her only relatives live, and she begins looking for flights, hoping to be able to escape.
Meanwhile, Yu Jin and Meera piece together more information about the mystery man : He comes home every day at 11:45 pm, and on Fridays, he has a wonky step, meaning that he comes home from drinking. Owing the complete silence, they gather that he lives alone in the house that was rented out to Min Soo Ji. Worried that something might have happened, they decide to try and find information on her.

Weak Hero Character Names
For those who don't know, the Weak Hero webtoon anglicized a bunch of the characters' first names from Korean to English. They don't do this for newly introduced characters anymore AFAIK, but all the names they anglicized initially have been kept that way.
Since I've gotten a few people asking about the names, so I decided to compile a list of their original Korean names. You can find amost of these on their character profiles on the Weak Hero fandom page, but I figured people would appreciate having a quick reference that is all in one place. Hopefully this helps people learn/connect their original names.
Remember, this is not a full character list, it's for finding the Korean names of the characters that had their names anglicized.
The format will be:
