I really love that the drama showed us the superficial similarities between Yeong-beom and Gwan-shik so that they could then highlight the crucial difference between them. Ae-sun was Gwan-shik’s priority. He always cared more about her comfort and happiness than anything else, and he demanded she be treated well. In every moment where it mattered and a choice needed to be made, he chose her without hesitation and he made sure his family knew this was his bottom line for them to stay in their lives.

And that’s where Yeong-beom failed. He was never strong enough to put Geum-myeong first. He let her be mistreated and humiliated by his mother for years. He was so avoidant about confronting the problem that he even let his mother belittle and terrorize Geum-myeong in front of her own parents. Despite a couple weak efforts on his part to address it, it was clear that this would never truly change. He wanted Geum-myeong to marry into this family that looked down on her and just put up with it for the rest of her life, and he was too selfish to realize what a horrible thing that is to ask of someone you claim to love. He is missing Gwan-shik’s steelheart, and without it he’s just a weak man who can’t protect her. I’m so relieved she found the strength to leave that relationship.

This was my first kdrama ever and I don’t regret what it started. The chemistry between the two leads was fire. The storyline kept me guessing which was a change for me. I’d like the chance to watch this for the first time again.

So don't talk about my wife like that.

A thought: Squid Game 3 ends with Gi-hun destroying the island, killing “Front Man” and then he comes back to live in his motel, grieving and mourning those he’s lost, still depressed.

Until weeks later, someone visits him. He doesn’t care who it is and is about to tell them to leave until the guy turns around and it’s Young-il.

And for the first time since coming back from the game, from killing “Front Man”, Gi-hun smiles.

You're a whistle. A human whistle.

When life gives you Tangerines, Ep 4, Gwan-sik calls Ae-sun a human whistle and I wondered what he meant by it. I probably didn't understand the meaning behind it when I was watching the fourth episode but after completing 12 of them, I finally understand what he meant. If you've cooked something in a pressure cooker, you'd get it even better. Have you noticed how the whiste sits on the top of the lid, held in the pressure, weighed by the silence initially when there's a strom stirring inside the pot and finally the whistle pierces the silence.

Ae-sun embodies endurance- the quiet strength of holding through pressure (her whole life has been a series of challenges), through moments where silence feels better than speaking out (she chose to not complain about her in-laws to Gwan-sik to protect the peace in her family). It's like carrying a weight of a lifetime on your chest, tension building with every breath, yet staying composed, holding it all inside. She endured, patiently, through the noise of the world, the expectations, the doubts, the harships, the challenges, the taunts, the failures.

But there comes a moment, when the pressure becomes too much to bear, when the silence you've kept no longer feels like strength but like restraint. I love how the director showed all the instances where Ae-sun screams and runs to save Gwan-sik when people mistreat him beyond.

In such moments, the whistle bursts forth- not with fury, but with the release of eveything you've carried. It's not rash or uncontrolled, it's the echo of someone who has weathered enough storm.

She's a human whistle, a whistle doesn't falter. It calls out when something must be heard. To endure with grace, knowing there's a time to hold back and a time when speaking, after all that pressure, is the most powerful thing to save your people.
