Jokes on the last repost I can feel the strap. I used a combination of long-duration hallucinogens and autohypnosis to liquid ocelot myself into feeling the strap. I don’t even have to look at it, I feel the subtle pressures and pulling on the harness. I have trained my hips to lie to my brain that they are a dick. Why did I do this? Spite and womb-madness, that’s why.

So. You seem to know quite a bit about Norse magical traditions, and I'm wondering your opinion on something. On the seidr wiki, I came across the mention of seidr being a practice of 'shamanic trembling' and autohypnosis via hyperventilation. While I think this definitely fits the scene from Fargo, I saw other sources saying they don't put stock in the trembling/seething hypothesis. What do you think? I know mostly about low magic (i.e. immediately understood the sin eating scene, did not know wtf to think of the goat ritual), so I'm a bit 🙃🤷‍♀️
Historically speaking, there is very little knowledge about actual historical practice, anything you can find will fill in the gaps if you are currently practicing it or make a minimally close representation of what would happen during the act. The reality is that literally no one does it, no one knows how it was practiced or what it was for, we have about 2 sentences in the Erik the Red saga that are incredibly vague and that's what we should do, any seidr you see now will be entirely manufactured by whoever is preaching it. no one knows the "real" seidr, it is entirely guesswork and varies greatly from person to person. I recommend you check out The Viking Way and Children of Ash and Elm, both by Neil Price, they are robust books, but they are good starting points to pick up on the few vague suggestions that have survived, from there, using these details you can create your own modern interpretation of seidr... Unfortunately this is all that is known, the information I have was taken from sources like this, vague and not very exact, the issue of gender is well addressed because it was something seen as feminine but odin practiced it, so the from there came several elaborations, etc.
The ancient pagan meaning of “animal sacrifice” was to prepare dinner. It is a way of honoring the animal that dies so that we can eat and live. This is the only type of animal sacrifice that any Wiccan tradition teaches. Goats have been raised and then sacrificed as human food for thousands of years. I'm not sure what Ole did in that scene, but it reminded me a lot of rites that were done by some warrior tribes in the mountains who had the custom of “bleeding” a new generation of soldiers by cutting a goat and using its blood to mark the young men, on certain festive occasions. The goat then becomes part of the party, which makes sense since Ole is apparently preparing for combat, he didn't ingest any part of the goat, I believe that perhaps Ole was preparing for combat, especially considering some things he says in Latin that seem to be from the Latin Vulgate Bible: "Cumque portaverit hircus omnes iniquitates eorum in terram solitariam, et dimissus fuerit in desert". [Omnes iniquitates] filiorum Israhel, et universa delicta atque peccat[a eorum...] The first sentence is Leviticus 16:22: "And the goat will bear all their iniquities into a land not inhabited; and he will release the goat into the wilderness." It's about the sacrificial goat of Yom Kippur that absorbs the sins of penitents and absolves them by proxy. The next phrase, which the series distorts a little (and is also somewhat omitted), is merely providing an explanatory phrase for the immediately preceding verse: "[... All the iniquities] of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins..." (in the show this is distorted to something like: With all the chivalry of those who were in solidarity with him (repeated twice ). He marched into the wilderness of Israel and everything was conquered.)

Aside from the Internet, you can also get information on various books as well as different magazines. Here, you can find interesting articles that can give you a better understanding of the practice especially on the methods that can be used according to the level of skills of the person.
If you are planning to conduct self hypnosis at home, it is best to ask people who have been practicing it for the basic methods that you can use. If you personally know people who are doing self hypnosis, it is best to get first hand information from them. Although you can get it also from the practitioners outside, it is still better if you get the facts straight from the people that you know. By doing this, you can get the best tips and advice on how to start with the practice and carry on with it for your personal as well as spiritual growth. Once enough information has been gathered, one can now start with self hypnosis.

Today, most of the self hypnosis methods and techniques that are used may include induction procedures, methods for communicating with the subconscious part of the person’s mind and suggestion formulation and application. Here are two of the most commonly used methods for self hypnosis:
Self Hypnosis induction script. This refers to the induction talk for people who will be practicing self-hypnosis. For many people, they can used this as a guide to thinking their way down. In many instances, this is being recorded and can only be listened to during the practice itself.
Autoquestioning. This refers to the set of methods and techniques that are used to get information right from the person’s subconscious mind. Many people who practice self hypnosis use its subset, ideomotor questioning the most because the information gathered here are primarily used for correcting suggestions to change as well as acceptance and confirming of the person’s subconscious.

Total Star Wars/d&d brainrot geekery, but I’ve been thinking about ways to build Jedi in various gaming systems and how to best emulate the lightsaber fighting styles in Star Wars with d&d type mechanics. I think Pathfinder’s Path of War (or its predecessor, Tomb of Battle) Disciplines are fantastic at capturing both the various form’s themes and their awesome mechanics for mystical martial arts.

Shi Cho: The first and for most of the Jedi Order’s history, only lightsaber style, this form emphasizes the Jedi’s signature weapon and unique abilities turning mundane fighting style mystical. It sticks to basic strikes and parries but augments them with mystical martial prowess for wide, sweeping attacks characteristic of the form. Best is probably...
Sleeping Goddess: With several maneuvers to enhance a lightsaber mind blade, others capable of being augmented by the Force power points, a focus on mental powers, ideals and an associated skill of autohypnosis (quasi-meditation) this discipline is most fitting for Shi Cho. All it needs is more maneuvers focused on hitting multiple targets.
Sith Variant: Veiled Moon makes a good dark counterpart. The mechanics are somewhat similar in movement and single-target strikes but Veiled Moon focuses on tapping into the power of the shadow realm, not ideals, and evading Sleeping Goddess’s sight with stealth – a perfect assassin counter-Discipline!
Makashi: As Sith clashed against Jedi in open combat, both Orders needed new forms. Here we see the incorporation of mundane blade-to-blade combat forms adjusted for the strange and supernatural Light-blades of both Orders. With a focus on efficiency, control and grace in both its strikes and footwork, Makashi is the ultimate duelist’s form. And there’s a couple good disciplines fitting to represent it…
Mithral Current: This form is definitely the Jedi variant because it puts heavy focus on the act of sheathing one’s blade – and drawing it lightning-fast against any fool who strikes first. It’s associated skill is Perform (Dance) so it’s also literally lightsaber ballet as @charmwasjess described! Given the name, it also emphasizes the ‘goodly’ silver element
Sith Variant: Probably Scarlet Throne, which has more rulership themes and focuses more on heavy damage. It’s conflict resolution is ‘the conflict is resolved when the foe is dead’. It’s associated skill ‘Sense Motive’ is also perfect for an Order where members are just as likely to duel each other as they are a Jedi.
Soresu: With the proliferation of blasters, lightsaber wielders turned their iconic weapons to shields. The resulting form focuses so heavily on blocking and defense that it almost completely forgoes attacks. Most damage from the Soresu form comes from the attacker’s own strikes being redirected back onto them. This one is pretty easy (if specific) to emulate with Path of War’s disciplines…at least for the Jedi.
Iron Tortoise: Is the most defensive discipline and can straight-up nope some attacks. It’s Bluff associated skill also feels appropriate to Obi Wan, though perhaps not other Soresu users. However the discipline requires shield-use…unless you play the Warder class with the Zweihandler Sentinel archetype.
Sith Variant: the Sith aren’t known for their defensive focus, but eternal guardian is fairly defensive while having a ‘curse’ mechanic and its associated skill is intimidation, which makes it pretty perfect for a Sith fighting form that nevertheless focuses on defense.
Ataru: As Mandalorians entered Sith-Jedi conflicts, both sides developed forms against them. The Jedi for defense against these new foes and the Sith to betray – as always. This form focuses on using the Force to enhance physical abilities for blindingly fast attacks and otherwise impossible acrobatics. Several disciplines fit this, but only two are so thoroughly opposed to each other in philosophy to fit…
Broken Blade: is thematically the monk Discipline of Path of War, it has acrobatics as its associated skill, multiple maneuvers and stances that allow additional attacks and devastatingly strong attacks. It also has a very Jedi feel with a focus on being disciplined and focused. Even calm.
Sith Varant: Primal Fury might not have acrobatics as an associated skill but it fits Sith philosophy to a T. It’s focus on charges and ‘pounce’ mechanics give the feel of rapid blows and high jumps despite survival being the associated skill. Its also thematically about drawing from your raw fury for combat prowess

• Absolutely agree! And after growing tired of no response from Luciusfilm I yoinked Dreamscarred Press’ Path of War system and headcanon that’s the secret Jedi (and Sith) martial arts. All of these systems maneuvers and stances feel very Wuxia and some are straight up supernatural so many of PoW’s martial disciplines fit surprisingly well with lightsaber forms.
Warning for nerd word vomit...
o Sleeping Goddess: Is a supernatural discipline fueled by the Force power points, has a lightsaber mind blade/mental powers theme and an associated skill of autohypnosis (aka meditation) how is this not a Jedi lightsaber form? (Copyright, that's why) o Mithral Current: is a dueling style form that focuses on the importance of sheathing your blade, speed, powerful attacks and footwork given its associated skill is dancing. This absolutely is makashi and I will be taking no arguments .
o Iron Tortoise: a purely defensive discipline with an associated skill in bluff/deception sounds very Soresu to me. There is a downside in that mechanically this discipline requires a shield in almost all cases but otherwise it's pretty fitting. o Broken Blade: It’s the Monk discipline known for its swiftness, multiple attacks, high jumps and acrobatics, which is the associated skill – this has got to be a Jedi discipline. Specifically Ataru for which it has the perfect mechanics! 10 out of 10 no notes. o Silver Crane: The goody two shoes discipline. Its themes are more pop-culture angelic with feathers/wings imagery among its stances and ‘sacred damage’ that does 1.5x the damage against ‘evil’. Still not a bad thematic pairing and its skill is perception. o Radiant Dawn: A mystical light-themed discipline with lots of healing/aiding allies and diplomacy as it’s associated skill? What could be more Jedi? (ironically the fluff of this class isn't quite so Jedi but who cares about that?) o Shattered Mirror: a rather strange discipline, it focuses on distorting perspective, copycatting enemy abilities or even stealing them. It's one of the most supernatural disciplines and pairs best with actual mystical abilities. Associated skill is arts and crafts
God I’m just thinking. And ugh, the Jedi’s martial arts must have been amazing. They had seven distinct styles, passed down over a thousand generations, by uncountable lineages.
Every lineage must have had their own katas, their own training methods and distinct variations on the forms. There were probably inter-lineage feuds on what type of sparring they taught, variations on specific katas, which techniques were acceptable in sparring, anything. You KNOW those High Republic Outpost Jedi must have created new styles that were gradually subsumed into the 7 forms.
What would a Jedi Tournament have looked like? Were there ones for specific forms, like Soresu-only competitions? Did they have some kind of point sparring? Was there an endurance/blocking division? How would they have measured Force abilities in a tournament setting? How did they score?

It is autohypnosis: You go on repeating that you are this way and that way, that you are inadequate or incapable. You repeat this, and it becomes a mantra; it sinks into your heart and becomes reality. Just try to function as if you have no problems, and suddenly YOU will see that you have a totally different quality: you don't have any problems! And then it is up to you whether you take up the problem again or you drop them forever. A problem can be dropped so easily if you understand that it is you holding the problem, not the problem holding you.
But we cannot live without problems, so you go on creating them. One feels so alone without problems there is nothing left to be done. With the problem you feel very happy something has to be done, and you have to think about it; it gives you an occupation. This continuous idea that you are inadequate and you are incapable and you are this and that-this is basically very egoistic. You want to be so adequate, but why? You want to be really tremendously capable, but why? Why can't you be satisfied with all the inadequacies and limitations that are there? Once you accept them you will see that you start to flow more easily.

Autohypnosis?
On our latest date I was giving @arihi some methods to phrase suggestions in trance. This was mostly play, but partially it’s skill-building for the workshops we’re going to be running for our local community. They’ve had some experience inducing trance in others, but not a lot doing much more than that. We had already been playing for a little bit by that time - I was fractionated to some degree, and I’m a very good subject when I let myself be - so I was pretty prone to falling into trance at the slightest drop. They were trying to induce a trigger - when they roll their eyes, mine would roll involuntarily. I was giving them suggestions on how to phrase it, and I was trying to tell them that oftentimes ambiguity works better than statements.
As I was saying the words “Try ‘you may find that when my eyes roll, your eyes will roll back involuntarily” - and in simply saying the words myself, I felt it click. I’d managed to suggest myself into a trigger.
I tend to find that ‘hypnosis’ or ‘trance’ is something that subjects do, and that hypnotists tend to simply create the context to allow an otherwise natural state to come forth, but I hadn’t ever done any autohypnosis before. I want to do a big long diatribe on hypnosis and how I view it (oh god, this is how @h-sleepingirl wrote a book, isn’t it?) but I just wanted to dribble this here. It was a really interesting experience!

Grounding from a Head State
Today, I am going to provide a guided meditation that starts with grounding from a head state, for anyone to try who so desires. If you don't want to try it, that is totally fine, and you may read it casually or just skip this post.
Like I said, we are going to attempt a guided meditation that starts with grounding from a head state, then works down through your Conscious state to your root patterns, then back up into a Conscious state. If you're going to try it, please find a comfortable place where you can spend about 20-30 minutes uninterrupted.
We begin in your Head State. Right now, what you are sensing is of little consequence to you, balanced against the stream of thoughts and emotions dominating your mind, keeping you up in your headspace instead of out in the world. Depending on your level of awareness, you may be experiencing your Mindscape in more extravagant ways. We are here to ground this state in the material and return you to the Conscious.
Narrow your field of view, narrow the range of thoughts you are trying to explore. Set aside your dreams, your memories, your hidden ambitions. Put away your schedule, put away your hobbies, your work, your family. Put away your internal turmoil, your joy, sorrow, fear, rage. Only one thing is worthy of your thoughts right now. In this moment. Focus your thoughts on this screen, on the words typed on it. Any emotion you feel right now, direct it at these words. Feel it about these words, and nothing else. Focus on the order of words, on the length of sentences. Focus on the spelling, the grammar, the punctuation. Beyond all else, direct as much attention as possible to the meaning of these words. Try to imagine how the voice sounds, of the speaker who is telling you these things. There is no wrong answer. I sound exactly as you are imagining. Hear the nuance of my words, my accent, my cadence and tone. Make the sound real.
Put into your mind the smell of apples. The smell of cinnamon and vanilla. Put into your mind another smell within this haze of scents. The smell of a human being, recently bathed, but bearing traces of work in the kitchen. The smell of cooked things. Identify that these are the smells of the person speaking, and the place the words are coming from.
Visualize your dominant hand reaching out in front of you. Fingers up, palm forward. Feel the slight sense of pressure as another hand lightly touches yours. Palm to palm, fingers touching ever so lightly. Feel my hand press firmly now against yours, reassuring you that I am here, calling your attention to the forefront. Feel the warmth of that hand, the confidence of the gesture. Feel the strength in the arm behind it. Gentle, but assured. Try to sense that I am here, that I am with you.
I call you to be Conscious in this place. With these projected senses, I call you from the depths of your mind, from the sanctuary of your own thoughts, from the river of your own emotions. I lift you from that with your hand in mine. We breathe together, in deeply, and you become strongly aware of the real scents in the room around you, leaving my projected smell behind. We breathe out, slowly, and you become strongly aware of the real temperature of the room around you. We breathe again, and you hear only yourself breathing, forgetting what I have suggested you hear.
You breathe again, taking in the sights of what is around you, every image, every color, every change in brightness. Putting the projected images aside. Leaving imagined senses and telling only what is true of the world around you. You are here. You are present in this room, in this moment, in this life. No thought, no feeling matters so much in this moment, as the experience of being alive and being here.
Take a minute or two to ground yourself. I have posted a guided meditation on grounding from a Conscious state. Use that if you prefer.
When you have completed grounding, move back into that Conscious state. Your eyes see the world around you, the screen these words are on, and everything else in the room. If the room is dark, then there's not much left to divert your eyes. Your ears hear every subtle noise, every sound of the wind or rain, every falling leaf, every bird and bug. You hear every air conditioner, fan, or heater nearby. You may hear other people or living beings in the house. Your nose picks up on the fine composition of all material things, wafting toward you through the air. Your tongue likely tastes your last meal, your saliva, or whatever freshens your breath. On your skin, you feel every light pressure, the presence of the air, the temperature of the room around you, and the heat coming from your own body. But there is more. You feel a sense of where your head sits, what your hands and arms are doing, how you have your feet and legs positioned. You feel yourself breathing. You feel your heart beating. You have an innate sense of your place in the room.
Take a minute to appreciate your transformation from cerebral, to purely conscious, to grounded, and now back into a healthy state of consciousness. Remember it, so that whenever you are in a Head state, and you need to ground yourself, you can call back this feeling.

Wait, I need to ask you (and by extension your followers) something. Do you see things when you close your eyes? Can you picture things with your eyes closed?
Literally? No I don’t. I don’t have a minds eye either so mentally conjuring stuff isn’t better if my eyes are closed rather than open.
