I feel like Wally would use a rubik's cube as a fidget toy. Like in the middle of meetings, debriefs, or whenever really, he'll just be playing with a rubik's cube at high speeds. Like the reader, tends to not speak much, but loves to listen to Wally talking about his day.

The reader has a couple of habits, such has scratching at their forearm when anxious, has a couple of vocal stims too.

Headcanons

I am very much putting my own habits on the reader in this.

Wally himself isn’t autistic but being connected to the speedforce always makes the speedsters seem antsy or twitchy, since everything moves so much faster than them at all times, so he could understand a couple of the things you go through.

He can end up speaking so fast that you can’t keep up at all, especially if you struggle with auditory processing, but listening to Wally talk extremely fast works pretty well as some kind of white noise. And since its him talking it always help you calm down.

He wouldn’t mind that you don’t speak a lot, since that’s just who you are, and he gets good at reading you, your vibe and your body language, if you struggle with facial expressions.

Wally keeps stimming toys on him at all times, both for himself and for you, since they’re good for when he himself cant sit still during the day.

I could also imagine him always having headphones on his person, the noise cancelling ones since he likes listening to his music and being in the zone, but they’re also very useful if you are feeling overstimulated.

When you start scratching your arms when you’re anxious, Wally does his best to help get you out of the situation that made you uncomfortable in the first place. Or he will hold your hand so you can’t scratch but since its him holding your hand, you won’t feel trapped.

Lets you mess with his hands, his hair, his shirt sleeves, anything really, if you need it to ground yourself or just need to do something with your hands.

He gets you some of those lava rocks with the latex you can pick out of if it’s the picking part that brings you comfort, or gets you other stimming toys or items to help you find other outlets than scratching yourself.

In the beginning Wally might feel embarrassed about talking so much since he’s scared, he’s talking over you, but when you express that you just like listening to him talk it helps him feel less ashamed or flustered about it.

It ends up becoming a habit, that when you are feeling very overstimulated and just need something to ground you, he sits beside you, holding your hand, and talking using the speedforce. It’s so fast you can’t understand a single word, but its good to block out other noise and giving you something to hold onto.

Wally quite likes your vocal stims since its something so you, since they’re probably something special to you like something from a show or game you like, or animal noises, or something else along those lines.

He might end up picking up the habit of repeating the same stims as you even though he isn’t autistic, it just becomes something he does from spending so much time around you.

Wally never minds your different stimming, even if it is making loud sudden noises or mumbling a lot, he’s used too it and just likes that you are comfortable around him enough that you don’t feel the need to mask.

I could imagine you somehow picking up a verbal stim that’s copying the zipping sound he makes running around, since it’s a comforting noise knowing its Wally, but also since it’s a pleasing noise to hear and make.

Wally is a great partner to have for any person, since he wont judge you for who you are and help you get out of your shell. If you masked a lot before getting together, expect to feel a lot less ashamed or wary after being with Wally for a while since he’s so accepting and helpful.

Authors note: This wasn't a request, just something that popped up in my mind, as I go mute. But still feel the need to mask it a lot. So I just want to write a vent about myself, masking, with a character I love.

Many team members were a little wary of you at first; it wasn't anything you did wrong. It was more that they didn't know you or realize your mentor either.

Dick and Tim immediately noticed that you were autistic or at least some type of neurodivergent, mainly due to having Bruce as their father figure, being around Damian, and also Tim being autistic. With all the changes, they ensured you got accommodations to make you feel more comfortable, though they also stayed manageable. Not holding your hand but giving you that safety net.

It was Wally that actually first tried making friends with you, him being the most friendly out of your teammates. Besides Kon, that is, Wally was more enthusiastic. Wanting to make sure you feel welcome. He quickly realized that you couldn't talk; he was confused about why. He found out why through Dick and during the Team being mind linked.

After a while of you two being friends, you and Wally communicated through some basic ASL and some of your stims. He actually nicked his favorite stim of yours, named Happy jazz hands. Another was a vocal stim you picked up while being around him. That being, you mimicking the sound of him using the speed force.

Though, being Autistic, there were downs along with the upsides. Occasionally, having meltdowns or panic attacks due to touching a particular texture or something causes you to change your routine. Wally started regularly helping when you were going through them, helping you calm down. Wither that was helping you get to your room, getting you away from the texture or situation, letting you cuddle into him, or holding his hand.

The rest of your teammates did warm up to you at their own pace, but you stick to Wally like glue. Which did cause Dick to tease his redheaded friend. Especially when you two were holding hands or cuddling on the sofa. You didn't pick up on the social cues of why Dick was teasing him.

At some point, Wally couldn't figure out when his soft spot for you turned into deeper feelings. He didn't know that you definitely felt the same. Though you were hypervigilant, you never tried making a further move, just in case you were reading into things wrong.

During one of your meltdowns, College life, hero work, and every goddamn noise made you feel static and frustrated. Wally carefully approached you, helping you get to your room. This time, however, you asked him to stay with you. Signing: [You visit], which Wally agreed to, sitting on your bed with you.

Resting your head on his chest, though, typical for you both, there was some extra tension for Wally. He loved helping you calm down, even when he was more drained. It means you trust him immensely, but he feels he's tainting that trust by not telling you his true feelings. So he promises to tell you tonight after you've calmed down fully.

'Hey, [name]? Can I tell you something?.' the worried tone made your mouth dry. Does he find me annoying? Did I do something wrong? Sign: [Yes], you knocked twice on an invisible table motion to tell him yes. With a sigh, he continued, 'I don't know when the feelings started,' he paused to word the next ones better, 'but I've grown to really like you, more than just a friend.' The last part, his voice wavering with nervousness.

He finally turned his eyes to you when he felt your weight shift over him. [I. Like. You] was what you signed with a smile, which encouraged a smile to form on the Speedster's. 'I'm so glad,' he laughs with joy when you pull him into a hug.

Flash Headcanons

These are headcanons I have about the Flash (comics, not tv show) and all of the lore and other characters.

Barry is on the autistic spectrum but never got an official diagnosis as a child due to Eobard's meddling. Iris is actively trying to help him get a diagnosis. Barry's special interests include comic books (specifically the Flash) and science.

The Wests have ADHD

Wally's ADHD influences certain aspects of his connection to the speed force.

Eobard has a secret base in the present that's a time vault full of flash memorabilia.

Eobard has been one of the many bullies Barry had during his childhood because of how Eobard can warp time around him.

The reason Black Flash doesn't go after Reverse Flash or any other Negative Speed Force conduit is because even thought the Negative Speed Force feeds off the regular Speed Force, the Speed Force pulls energy from the Negative Speed Force to recycle it.

Eobard will furiously correct anyone who gets anything about the Flash wrong.

Barry has read the Dune books. Wally couldn't get past the first chapter of Dune.

Internet forums speculate if Jay Garrick's Flash is the comic character brought to life (Because if you didn't know, his Flash existed as a comic book on Earth Prime if I remember correctly) or he is just an old cosplayer that is a speedster.

Barry has nightmares about Flashpoint.

Wally has nightmares about being stuck in the Speed Force and losing his family again.

The Rogues have a movie night sometimes if they can agree on which movie to watch (Fast & Furious is always brought up)

Barry often tests his capabilities as a speedster, writing his findings in a small journal detailing the different skills you can accomplish with the speed force. Eobard has a digital copy of this book after it was published.

Old Barry gets catcalled "dilf" by random people, he blushes every time he hears it.

Reverse Flash has considered resurrecting Daniel West just to kill him in front of Ace West all for taking Eobard's name.

Black Flash was created by Barry’s “death” in Crisis on Infinite Earths due to the cosmic events that occurred from it.

Reasons why I believe Garth (Aqualad / Tempest) is neurodivergent and on the autism spectrum

I believe that Garth (Aqualad / Tempest) from DC Comics has high functioning autism. He has multiple autistic traits that I have noticed. For example, I have noticed very many traits in The World’s Finest: Teen Titans #4 (2023 - 2024) while I was reading the comic issue. I’ve created this headcannon because I see many of his traits in myself. I will try to make this as short as possible, but still give photos and explanations.

The World’s Finest: Teen Titans #4 (2023 - 2024) in summary, the story is about Wally West (Kid Flash) inviting Roy Harper (Speedy) and Garth (Aqualad) over to his house for a sleepover. He mainly invited Garth over to give him some advice and emotional support because he has noticed some rough patches in Garth’s and Donna Tory’s (Wonder Girl’s) relationship. He invited Roy over because he believed that having some friends over would help ease Garth’s nerves. Roy is confused, because he doesn’t really like Garth. He only tolerates him. Roy believes that Garth is “weird”. Nonetheless, they have their sleepover. Garth is getting easily flustered and nervous with everything going on around Wally’s house, and Roy is starting to get annoyed with Garth for acting weird when he believes that everything is normal. Wally is starting to get annoyed at Roy for not acknowledging Garth’s feelings, but doesn’t understand why Garth doesn’t feel comfortable. Wally, Roy, and Garth all go outside to talk. Wally listens to Garth talk about his problems with Donna, but Roy tries giving Garth advice. He tells Garth to stop acting insecure and to stand up for himself. Let Donna know what HE wants in a relationship. NOT just her. Ten minutes later, they go back inside. Wally and Roy are playing video games together on a big TV while eating chips. Meanwhile, Garth is on the couch, covering his face with the pillow because of all of the sounds and lights. Roy buys a bigger TV, which overstimulates Garth even more. Roy picks on Garth by saying “Pipe down, wrinklefingers. Go back to your sensory deprivation.” The next day, Wally’s parents go talk to Wally. When they bring up that it’s about his friend, Wally immediately assumes they’re talking about Garth. When it turns out, they’re talking about Roy. They tell Wally that they believe Roy is a bad influence on him. And most importantly, about how he’s mean to Garth. Garth overhears this and walks into the room, trying to defend Roy. Wally’s dad tells Garth to not make excuses for Roy. Garth then says that he believes that Roy is only acting like this for attention. That Roy is lonely, and bragging is his way of dealing with the pain of feeling neglected. And the only thing to heal that pain is for Roy’s guardian, Oliver Queen, (Green Arrow) to make more time for him. Wally and his parents are all impressed with Garth’s assumption and maturity. But it turns out, Roy heard everything that Garth said from the other room. He’s extremely offended and frankly… upset. He gets out his phone and calls a limo to come pick him up. And that is where the issue comes to an end.

#1: Having trouble adjusting to a new environment

In this panel, Garth is laying down on the stairs while Wally and Wally’s dad stare at him with confused expressions. Garth doesn’t know how to use stairs. He’s not used to them. In his usual environment, he doesn’t use stairs. Stairs are new to him. Wally’s house is a new environment for him and he isn’t used to it yet. He is having trouble adjusting to this new environment. Meanwhile, Wally and his dad see stairs as perfectly normal. They’re used to this environment. Meanwhile, Garth is not. Most autistic people have trouble adjusting to new environments and can get overstimulated easily by change in the environment and scenery. That is what I see in this panel.

#2: Trying new foods

In this panel, Garth is trying grilled cheese and tomato soup for the first time. Garth seems hesitant, not used to this new food. He’s not used to cheese, not even really dairy. But he’s aware of tomato soup to an extent. He thinks of tomato soup as “water with something in it”. He knows what water is. And he likes water. So he correlates the two. A lot of people with autism are hesitant on trying new foods that they are unaware of. Most of the time, they stick to what they know. That is what I see in this panel here.

#3: Disliking a certain smell & wanting comfort food

In this panel, Garth is covering his nose after smelling the grilled cheese. Sometimes, autistic people smell things that they are not used to. For example, like new foods. After Garth smells the grilled cheese, he gags and covers his nose. The new smell was overwhelming and uncomfortable. Wally’s mom notices and asks if he’s alright. Roy replies to Wally’s mom stating that “his people” don’t really do dairy. Wally’s mom feels bad and tells Garth that he doesn’t have to eat the grilled cheese and she asks him if she could get him anything else. Garth’s face immediately lights up and he asks for some more water. Water is Garth’s comfort food. He’s used to water. He knows he likes it. Therefore, he desires the water after experiencing the smell of the cheese. That is a very common trait in people who have autism. And that is what I see in this panel.

#4: Masking

In this panel, Garth, Wally, and Roy are all outside to talk and hang out privately. In the very first sentence, Garth says “I’m afraid I’m not blending in well.” Trying to blend into a new environment to not seem abnormal is called masking. It it very common in people who have autism. Roy then goes to pick on Garth again, when Wally stops Roy. He then tells Garth that he’ll set up a garden hose and that Garth is free to splash whenever he likes. (Which, can I just say, props to Wally. He’s accommodating for Garth’s needs. He wants to make Garth feel at home.)

#5: Comfort place

In this panel, Garth states that he actually likes Wally’s house. Roy doesn’t agree with him, staying that there’s nothing to do. Garth states that he likes it because it’s calmer than where Donna lives. He said “The sights and sounds don’t assault me. Where I’m from, everything is more… muted.” Garth is stating that at Wally’s house, he’s less likely to get overstimulated or a sensory overload. He likes the quiet. He likes what other people consider “boring”. This is more common in neurodivergent people. I see that in this panel.

#6: Relationships

In this panel, Wally crouches down and puts his hand on Garth’s shoulder to comfort him since Garth is feeling down. Wally asks Garth what’s going on between him and Donna. Garth explains that he’s not fully sure. He states that Donna doesn’t seem to understand that his people interact with others differently than she does. He states that Donna enjoys almost everything that he doesn’t. Music, food, art, fashion. He says “It all gets louder and faster and wilder, until my head explodes.” He is stating that he feel’s overstimulated with the activities that she enjoys. He likes quiet, she likes loud. She likes action, he likes mundane activities. What this panel is showing to me at least is the difference between neurodivergent and neurotypical relationships.

#7: Sensory overload

In this panel, Wally and Roy are playing video games. They’re playing very loudly with the TV volume up. Garth is in the back sitting on the couch, stuffing his face in a pillow. He is trying to block out the noise. Because of the loud sounds and bright lights of the TV, he is having a sensory overload. He is overstimulated by all of the bold sensory’s at once. Roy even looks back at Garth and says “Pipe down, wrinklefingers. Go back to your sensory deprivation.” Being overstimulated by sounds, sights, lights, smells, etc is very common in neurodivergent people. New sights and sounds can be too much, which causes a sensory overload and a meltdown. That is what I see in this panel.

#8: Manners and cleanliness

In this panel, Wally’s parents are having a chat with Wally. Wally’s dad states that Garth is a really nice kid. Sometimes with neurodivergent people, they can be overly nice. Wally’s mom states that Garth is one of the cleanest teenage boys she’s ever seen. Now, most of the time, cleanliness and manners correlates more with OCD rather than autism. BUT OCD correlates WITH autism most of the time. NOT ALL OF THE TIME, but MOST of the time.

#9: Reading other’s emotions

In this panel, Garth is telling Wally and Wally’s parents about how he believes that Roy is only acting out to get attention. How that Roy is lonely and the way he deals to cope with the pain of loneliness is to brag about his wealth, and to fill that cold emptiness inside of him is for Ollie to pay more attention to him. Garth read Roy’s emotions like a book. Some autistic people can empathize with other’s feelings. Sometimes too well. They see things that other people don’t. They pick up on things that neurotypical people think they are hiding or sometimes even things in their subconscious that they are in denial about themselves. So when they notice that you know, they start to get angry or defensive that you found out, and they sometimes try to blame it on you, like it was your fault for finding out. That is how Roy is feeling here.

#10: Acting “mature” for your age

In this panel, Wally’s mom goes up to Garth, telling him about how impressed she is with his maturity. It is common for neurodivergent people to get told that they are mature for their age with their words or actions. That is what Garth is experiencing here.

Those are all of my reasons why I believe that Garth (Aqualad / Tempest) is neurodivergent and on the autism spectrum. Basically, my own mini essay. I understand if you do not agree with my statements, but thank you for reading anyways! :)
