I don't remember who said it but whoever suggested to use "high masking" and "low masking" instead of low and high functioning i love you so much. Its the only words I feel really work for me. I was diagnosed with "high functioning autism/aspergers" which the 1st one just didnt fit me i felt bc it just isnt true and the 2nd word has nazi history so um no thanks. Lots of people use low and high support needs now but those don't work for me either. Like i would be considered low support needs i guess but I do need lots of support with daily things i definitely do not have low support needs if i take the definition litterally. I am high masking.
High masking suggets that i look like i am high functioning and okay although i am not and that's very validating

Unconventional Tips for Navigating Life as an Autistic Adult šÆ
Design Your Environment: Autistic people often have sensory sensitivities, so create a home that caters to your unique needs. Love the color blue? Paint your walls a soothing azure. Need silence? Invest in soundproofing or noise-cancelling headphones.
2. Use Technology to Your Advantage: There are apps for everything these days. From mood tracking to reminder apps, there's something out there to make daily living a bit easier. Explore and find what works for you!
3. Develop Your Own Self-Care Routine: Forget what the magazines say. If your idea of self-care is organizing your bookshelf by color or re-watching your favorite Sci-Fi series for the 10th time, go for it!
4. Communicate Your Way: Not all communication has to be verbal. If you prefer texting to talking, that's perfectly okay. Find comfort in written words? Carry a notebook and write your thoughts out when it's hard to articulate them verbally.
5. Find your 'Tribe': Your tribe doesnāt necessarily need to be made up of people with the same experiences as you. But it does need to be a space where your quirks, passions, and unique way of seeing the world is celebrated.
6. Embrace Your Stims: Stimming, repetitive behaviors that self-soothe or express emotion, is a natural part of being autistic. Find safe, socially acceptable stims that you enjoy and let them help you manage sensory overload or anxiety.
7. Play the "If I Were NT" (Neurotypical) Game: When you're feeling out of sync with the rest of the world, remind yourself of the unique perspectives and skills that your neurodivergence brings.
Remember, these are just suggestions. Everyone's autism experience is unique. Keep exploring, learning, and growing in your own way!

Fuel Matthew's Journey for Autism Acceptance
Hi, I'm Matthew Kenslow, an advocate for Autism Awareness and Inclusion, using my journey to inspire and educate. Living with Autism, Iāve faced misunderstandings and challenges but turned them into opportunities to advocate for kindness and acceptance. Iāve written two books: Juggling the Issues, sharing the ups and downs of Autism, and Unstoppable, detailing my journey as a substitute teacher often called the ""best sub.""
Through assemblies in Orange County schools, Iāve reached nearly 9,000 students, engaging them with juggling, science, and personal stories that leave lasting impressions. I never charge for these events to ensure every school can access my message. Additionally, I share daily inspiration on social media, growing a global audience through my videos and interviews featured on outlets like Newsweek and ABC7 Los Angeles.
However, to expand this mission further, I need help covering costs for professional PR and outreach, which have proven impactful but are costly. Your support, through donations or simply sharing my work, can help me reach millions more and continue changing lives. Thank you for considering being part of this mission.

Navigating Through The Darkest Days
The Darkest Days of my life is facing my fears, my demons, my thoughts, my emotions and the things that have put me through hell and back.
One of my darkest days was losing the people that mean the most to my heart & life. My grandma, my cousin Jade, Moi, My Aunty Sadie, My great grandmother who we call Mom, both my pop-pops, My auntie Kristian and so on. I wish I could bring them back and let them have more time with me. But I canāt because they are home where the mighty god is protecting them & they are watching over me.
Other darkest time in my life is going through a very rough bad breakup. He was the love of my life. He was the most special, supportive, loving, caring, funniest man in my life. Now itās an empty shell in my heart that I canāt bare to let him go and let me move on and it hurts every day.
The most painful darkest moment of my life was learning how to express myself to other people and my family. Iām the person who doesnāt like to share her feelings or emotions with her family. Thatās what the most hardest time in my life ever and still is the hardest and painful day ever! I never share my feelings or my breakup with my family. I only shared it with my best friends.
Other painful and heartbreaking moment in my life was losing my best friend Sydneyā¦ I lost her because I wouldnāt let her be friends with my boyfriend well now ex boyfriend.. I was so afraid of losing him to her and It got conflicted with my friendship between me and her.. I miss her everyday and I miss hanging out with her and I miss being around her because she was like a sister to me.. but Iām still fighting it because it hurts badly and talking about it makes me emotional and I hate talking about it..
Iām learning to fight my demons everyday. Iām learning to understand grief better because I donāt want to hold onto the pain and suffering that i can feel right now. I donāt want to the pain to become the best part of me. I donāt my feelings to get in the way of how much I love my family and how much they love me.
My demons, my pain, my fears, my demons wonāt get the best person out of me. There are hardest days and the worst days where my demons & everything will get the best of me. But I have to keep pushing forward and focus on my life..
Hereās a quote: āStrength grows in the moment when you think you canāt go on but you keep going anywayā
Learn to fight through the darkness and follow the light through your toughest battles or moments. You can be strong and keep fighting through it.

Autism in Individuals Assigned Female at Birth (AFAB)
Autism in individuals assigned female at birth (AFAB)āincluding women, girls, non-binary, and trans-masculine individualsāis frequently underdiagnosed. Research reveals that as many asĀ 80%Ā of autistic AFAB individuals remain undiagnosed by age 18. Their symptoms often manifest differently than those seen in individuals assigned male at birth (AMAB), leading to delayed or missed diagnoses.
Recognizing the distinct signs of autism in AFAB individuals and offering appropriate support is crucial. This topic is explored in depth inĀ Autism in Girls: Why Signs of Neurodivergence Are OverlookedĀ by Karen Saporito, PhD, published by ADDitude Magazine, which informed this newsletter.
Autism in AFAB Individuals
Desire for Social Connection:Ā AFAB individuals with autism frequently have a strong desire to build social connections. In order to navigate social spaces, they may engage in maskingāadopting neurotypical behaviors to blend ināwhich, while making their challenges less apparent, can be mentally exhausting. Furthermore, many experience heightened rejection sensitivity, which can intensify the emotional impact of social interactions.
Consequences of Masking:Ā Masking can contribute to increased anxiety, diminished self-esteem, and challenges in forming authentic relationships. Additionally, it can complicate clinical evaluations, leading to delays in diagnosis and access to support and resources.
Restricted and Repetitive Behaviors:Ā AFAB individuals may engage in repetitive behaviors in more subtle ways, such as finger tapping or hair twirling, compared to AMAB individuals. Their special interests may also be more socially conventional, such as a focus on animals or celebrities, rather than the more overt fixations often observed in AMAB individuals.
Myths About Autism
To effectively identify autism in AFAB individuals, itās crucial to understand the myths surrounding it. Below is a list of common myths and the corresponding truths, as outlined by Dr. Saporito:
Supporting Neurodivergent AFAB Individuals
Early Detection:Ā Identifying autism early is essential for providing tailored support and minimizing feelings of shame or uncertainty.
Routine & Structure:Ā Consistent routines help alleviate anxiety and support smoother transitions.
Support Emotional Regulation:Ā Teaching coping techniques like mindfulness, healthy stimming, and breathing exercises enable better management of emotional challenges.
Adopt a Neurodiversity-Affirming Approach:Ā Celebrating the strengths of neurodivergent individuals fosters self-confidence, empowers self-advocacy, and encourages a positive sense of identity.

Autism and Double Empathy Problem
#emotionalempathy #autistictraits #autisticexperience
Hi Everyone and Welcome to One Autistic Person Channel Have you ever wondered how autism impacts empathy and emotional understanding? In this video, I discuss the "Double Empathy Problem" and its relevance to autistic experiences. As someone diagnosed later in life, I explore cognitive and emotional empathy, shedding light on how these traits manifest in neurodivergent individuals. From discussing the challenges of social interactions to the importance of support and masking, I share insights that resonate with late-diagnosed autistic adults. This video is part of my Autism Quotient series, where I flip the narrative to focus on strengths and practical strategies for navigating a neurotypical world. Tracing the History of Autism
The term "autism" comes from the Greek word "autos," meaning "self." It was first used in the psychiatric context by Swiss psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler in 1911 to describe a subset of symptoms related to schizophrenia. He referred to autism as a tendency for individuals to turn inwards, away from the outside world.
However, it wasn't until the 1940s that two scientists, working independently on different continents, started to develop the concept of autism as we understand it today. In the United States, child psychiatrist Leo Kanner, and in Austria, pediatrician Hans Asperger, both noticed that some of the children they were seeing shared a unique cluster of traits, including difficulties in social interaction, communication challenges, and repetitive behaviors. These observations would lay the foundation for our understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).
In the 1960s and 1970s, the perspective shifted from viewing autism as a symptom of schizophrenia or a form of childhood psychosis, towards understanding it as a separate condition. During this time, researchers such as Bernard Rimland and Ole Ivar Lovaas made significant strides in distinguishing autism from other developmental disorders and started exploring educational interventions and behavioral therapies.
The 1980s and 1990s brought about a broader recognition of the autism spectrum, with conditions such as Asperger's Syndrome and Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS) being added to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).
In the 21st century, we've seen a shift towards understanding and accepting neurodiversity, viewing autism not just as a set of challenges, but also recognizing the unique strengths and abilities that individuals on the spectrum can possess.
Despite these advancements, there's still much more to learn about the causes and manifestations of autism, and the journey towards greater understanding and acceptance continues.
