New participatory research paper on autism & AAC
3 of 7 co-authors, including me, are Autistic AAC users with varying amounts of also-speech. School-Based Professionals' Knowledge of Autistic Speech and Augmentative and Alternative Communication Decision Making is based on a survey of school-based professionals. This paper looks at how school-based professionals define terms related to speech -- both more traditional terms like "speech", "no speech", "some/minimal speech", "functional speech", and "fluent speech" and more community-derived terms like "intermittent speech", "insufficient speech", and "unreliable speech."
The paper also looks at school-based professionals' accuracy in defining "intermittent speech", "insufficient speech", and "unreliable speech." The reason we care about their accuracy, however, is in the poster: Perception of Autistic Speech: Views of School-Based Professionals. Overall, speech language pathologists who were able to provide more accurate definitions of intermittent, unreliable, and insufficient speech showed more agreement that they do or would recommend AAC to autistic students.
The paper and poster both use the same survey as Autistic Communication: A Survey of School-Based Professionals, which came out late last year. But the survey it was based on was long and not everything fit.
If you want either or both papers from the survey, please let me know (inbox open)! The poster should be free.

Loyalty and honesty are hallmarks of the Asperger's Heart, valuing genuine connections over superficial social niceties. It seeks authenticity in relationships, often forming fewer but stronger bonds.
The Asperger's Heart navigates a world that can feel overwhelming, processing sensory information and social dynamics in unique ways. This can lead to anxiety and stress, but also to creative problem-solving and original perspectives.
Understanding and embracing the Asperger's Heart is crucial for fostering inclusivity and appreciating the diverse ways humans experience and express emotion.

The puzzle piece has long been associated with autism, symbolizing the complexity and mystery of the condition. However, this symbol is controversial within the autism community.
For some, the puzzle piece represents the challenges of understanding and supporting individuals with autism. It suggests that autism is a puzzle to be solved or a piece that doesn't quite fit.
Many autistic individuals and advocates reject this symbol, arguing it implies they are incomplete or need fixing. They prefer symbols like the infinity loop or a rainbow spectrum, which better represent neurodiversity and acceptance.
The debate around the puzzle piece highlights the evolving understanding of autism and the importance of listening to autistic voices in shaping how autism is perceived and represented.

Go to our Go Fund Me to donate and share!
Adeline and her family moved to Tennessee a year ago, seeking a chance for better medical care, and found it here in our community. Doctors in Tennessee have saved her life — now, she needs our help to start living it.
Despite the brilliant light she brings into this world, Adeline endures daily suffering living in her body due to a genetic disorder and multiple medical conditions. In the past two years of her life she has been confined to a bed. This is on top of a lifetime of hospital admissions, ICU stays, and loss of everyday functional abilities, taking away her childhood.
Adeline’s genetic disorder has taken her sight, twisted her legs leaving her unable to walk, and ruined her ability to eat or drink by mouth. At this time, she does not have the ability to get out of her bed. To receive nutrition, she is attached to a central line in her chest. She is also given medication continuously through this central line in addition to a feeding tube to keep her alive. Adeline’s multitude of medications keep her from anaphylaxis, as well as give her pain control from nerve pain, daily dislocations, bruising, spine and neck instability, and tissue fragility that compromises her body on a daily basis.
Adeline’s family continually fights for her quality of life, but insurance companies often deny requests that would give Adeline what she desperately needs.
Here is how you can help:
Adeline’s needs and the estimated prices:
1. — A hospital bed $40,000
2. — A lift to get out of her bed and into her wheelchair $3,000
3. — A paved driveway and ramp $7,000
4. — A modified van with a lift (where she can lay down in her wheelchair) $60,000
5. — New eSight goggles $10,000
These are more details on why Adeline needs these things to give her independence, and a better quality of life:
Perhaps the most imperative on this list is the hospital bed, which would help the positioning of Adeline’s delicate body and daily medical procedures, as well as prevent aspiration pneumonia hospitalizations. This bed can be tilted up and down for Adeline’s comfort and care. It can also be lowered and raised for her caregiver’s needs in assisting her.
This bed would give her mom the ability to safely take care of Adeline’s daily needs. Adeline’s mom has the same genetic disorder, and recently injured her spine, which was compounded from the daily physical assistance Adeline requires.
Adeline also needs a special lift that keeps her body flat so she can get into her reclined power wheelchair. At the moment, she is only able to get into her wheelchair if she is lifted carefully by 4 to 5 strong adults who can safely move her without injuring her neck and spine. They also must make sure that her central line is not harmed during the process.
To get to vital medical appointments and specialists, her family needs a vehicle with a lift. Right now, Adeline cannot leave her home without an ambulance.
Without a medical team and ambulance, Adeline is totally confined to the bottom floor of their home. A paved driveway would allow for safe transport, as well as access to the main floor of her house. Currently, if company comes over, they must come to her to visit. A paved driveway would give her the independence to move more freely in and out of her own home.
Finally, Adeline is blind, and she relies on an expensive technology called eSight. Her glasses are now in need of repair and must be replaced. This is the only way Adeline can see. These glasses also give Adeline the ability to be an artist, a skill which she has passionately crafted and cultivated for years. For Adeline to have her eSight updated would not only be a blessing but would also greatly boost her quality of life, and the beauty in her world.
It brings us to tears hearing Adeline’s story, and her family’s daily fight to get the quality of life we would all want our children to have.
You can help Adeline have a quality of life worth living! Let’s come together and make this happen!

Autism Robot: An Educational and Fun Toy for Children on the Autism Spectrum
Autism robots are a developing field in technology aimed at assisting autistic individuals. These robots aren't replacements for human interaction or therapy, but rather tools to provide support in various areas.
Buy now:19.95$
Imagine a friendly robot designed to help a child with autism learn social skills. It might use clear, non-judgmental language and predictable routines to guide the child through social interactions. Through games and activities, the robot could teach recognizing facial expressions, taking turns in conversation, or navigating emotional responses.
For some autistic individuals, sensory overload can be a significant challenge. An autism robot could be programmed to identify signs of anxiety and offer calming techniques. This might involve soothing music, deep breathing exercises, or gentle pressure through inflatable arms.
Buy now
The potential applications of autism robots extend beyond social interaction and sensory management. They can be educational companions, helping with communication skills, learning routines, or providing reminders for tasks.
It's important to remember that autism robots are still under development, and their effectiveness can vary depending on the individual. However, they offer a promising avenue for providing support and enhancing the lives of autistic people.
The awareness puzzle piece is a widely recognized symbol for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). While its meaning is intended to reflect the puzzle-like complexity of autism, it has become a source of debate within the autistic community.
Buy now
Proponents see it as a way to raise awareness about the condition. The interlocking pieces could represent the different aspects of ASD or the need to work together for better understanding.
However, critics argue the puzzle metaphor implies that autistic people are incomplete or need to be "solved." They also dislike the infantilizing nature of the puzzle piece symbol, which can disregard the experiences of autistic adults.
If you're unsure about using the puzzle piece, it's always best to prioritize the perspectives of autistic people themselves. Consider alternative symbols that celebrate neurodiversity, such as the rainbow infinity symbol.
Buy now
Autism awareness isn't tied to a single color. While light blue is most recognizable due to Autism Speaks' "Light It Up Blue" campaign, the spectrum of autism itself is reflected in a broader color palette.
Light Blue: Represents calmness, trust, and acceptance for autistic individuals in a world that can sometimes feel overwhelming.
Red: Symbolizes the passion and advocacy driving efforts to improve the lives of autistic people.
Yellow: Represents the positive outlook and optimistic hope for a future filled with greater understanding and inclusion.
Green: Signifies the growth and progress made in autism awareness, research, and support for autistic individuals.
This range of colors acknowledges the complexities of autism spectrum disorder, the ongoing work towards acceptance, and the hopeful vision for a more inclusive world.
