I want to talk about all the little attachments and details on my AAC device!
The main way that I communicate is with my device. The one I currently use is a high tech AAC device made out of an android tablet and the app Avaz. Attached to my device are a few little things, some of which might not seem too important, but all of them are actually very important to me!
Attached to my strap are my chewmoji communication cards. I got them a few years ago. Whilst I mainly use my device to communicate, and it is very useful and easy for me, sometimes my chewmojis are easier for communicating simple emotions. They get the most use when I am regressed and/or when I have low spoons. They are very easy for me to use, because I can just flip through them and find the one that looks like how I feel! They are also chewable, which is helpful if I am having a difficult time and need oral sensory input. I don't use them very often for chewing, I usually use my chewy pendants for that, but its useful to have the option just in case. (In case anyone is wondering, yes, I wash them frequently! Even when I havent chewed on them I still clean them often.)
On my strap are my pins. I currently have two pins on my strap, but I would like to also get one that says something like "I'm autistic".
The blue pin on my strap is for safety and convenience purposes. It says "I hear + understand but don't speak". I need this pin because often times people won't understand that I am nonspeaking, and so they will become confused or even frustrated with me.
The other pin is for comfort purposes. It is a pin of a red converse shoe, and my best friend in the entire world gave it to me.

Ooh! What is this?
It is not a ‘what’, it is a ‘who’, Kesha. They are clearly alive.
Oh, Genya, he is trying.
*turning to Alien Heavy*
Friend, what is your name?
-@emotionally-intense-heavy (Misha) -@physically-toned-heavy (Kesha) -@mentally-capable-heavy (Genya)
The Alien stared at the 3, looking visibly distraught and confused through it’s big eyes while red ooze continued to drip down it’s face. He didn’t understand what the 3 had said, but he still tried to communicate.
“Zeegle zooble, meebo meep baim.” It tried to communicate through the only language it knew. Though it wasn’t clear if the 3 Heavys understood it, even so he still tried his best.

[Mimic doesn't remember the last time they had something to eat. Perhaps that was what caused them to leave the comfort of their small garden in favor of quietly strolling through the RED base walls.]
[They held a kettle in one gloved hand, balancing three tea cups in the other. Their steps were slow and soft, softened by the bottom of their boots which were intended for stealth.]
[Their eyes were downcast as they turned the corner, stepping down the hallway that opened into the kitchen. Maneuvering the items they held as they lifted their eyes up to make sure they didn't bump into anything, or anyone for that matter, as they stepped into the kitchen.]
(- @emotionally-defeated-mimic )-
The Alien froze in surprise like a deer in headlights, dropping one of Demo’s Scrumpy bottles. Glass shards scattering across the kitchen floor.
Hearing the glass bottle shatter made the Alien’s crooked antennas twitch.
It slowly faced Mimic. The Alien’s shoulders were still raised, but eventually the Alien loosened up.
It studied the human who walked in on it stealing from the freezer.

Be nice and don't mock tumblr users that communicate differently.
Examples:
1.) Typing quirks
2.) No punctuation
3.) Random Capitalisation
4.) Long run on sentences
5.) Frequently misspelled words
6.) Missing spaces between words
7.) Repeating words and sentences
8.) Posts audios and videos instead of typing
9.) Express themselves through custom emojis
10.) Use an AAC (Augmentative and alternative communication) device
Some users have intellectual disabilities, use speech to text, struggle with grammar, have hand tremmers, have high support needs, etc.
Regardless of how they communicate and their reason why, they still deserve respect. They are trying their best.

Plain Text below the cut!
AAC Tip of the Day:
Patience is Key!
When communicating with someone who uses AAC, it's important to be patient and give the person adequate time to respond.
Communicating with AAC requires more time than speaking / using mouth words. Don't interrupt while the AAC user formulates their thoughts.
And Remember - the amount of time it takes to communicate with AAC is not an indicator of the person's ability to think and understand!

System/AAC post time ☺️ (just a note. We are a poly fragmented system with a lot of members and there is overlap with how we communicate.
Different ones of us use different things to communicate.
High tech aac wise Kiku mostly uses Touchchat, Proloquo, and as of recently the semantic pro pageset in TD Snap.
Outside of high tech aac Kiku uses some ASL, noises, gestures, word approximations, and low tech aac (letterboards, core boards, communication cards, and sometimes picture cards). Kiku experiences unreliable speech but honestly Kiku's speech is more likely to be unintelligable to people that aren't our partners/caregivers.
Lavender experiences a lot of unreliable speech (he has estimated around 90% of the body's speech when fae is fronting is not what fae wants to say.) Lavender prefers Proloquo2go set to a large grid size (12x16) with a custom color code (can't remember which it's based off of but verbs are green. Lavender struggles to tell the difference between and see shades of blue sometimes, so there isn't a lot of blue in his setup.)
(Our CVI affects each of us a bit differently (for example, Kiku's easiest colors to see are yellow and green, Lavender's colors are pink, light purple, and red, and Percy's easiest to see colors are blue, red, and yellow.)
Lavender also uses Proloquo4text and recently has been trying semantic pro in TD Snap (we are very nervous about the changes that have been occuring with TD Snap/Tobii Dynavox but this post isn't about that). Lavender experiences a lot of our cognitive symptoms and aphasia (although this might just because they often front the most of the three of us.). Lavender uses one of our letterboards, texting, communication cards, and some asl. Lavender has a hard time remembering that we can use AAC and has only really recently realised how much of faer speech is unreliable.
Percy primarily uses LAMP and prefers high contrast symbols the most of the three of us (high contrast helps us all, especially with text only but Lavender prefers symbol stixx symbols) along with LAMP Percy uses a LAMP core/letterboard, some ASL, gestures, communication cards, picture cards and noises. Of the three of us Percy is the most likely to be completely silent.
We can all use LAMP (we think it's the motor planning aspect, which makes sense) but we each prefer different apps/communication methods.
Outside of the three of us we also have other alters who are AAC users. (a lot of us don't front to the outside world so they might not use AAC). We have two littles specifically who prefer ASL and writing respectively. One, Frisk, prefers ASL, and is mute (he does write when he has to (we only know so much ASL) but he's never happy about it lol) and the other struggles to talk and stutters badly when he tries and he prefers to write. (He has his own note pad but he doesn't front often.
Our AAC system is not perfect, we are still working on getting things to help us communicate, we especially don't have a good solution for when our vision and/or hearing is worse. We hope to get tactile symbols and a tactile keyguard at some point (preferably soon because our it's been a problem and it's getting hotter here which makes our vision worse).
We als want to get an accent at some point with a tactile keyguard and LAMP on it so we will have a dedicated AAC device we can always have a keyguard on.
Thanks for reading.

How I communicate besides my device (Tw for mentions of shutdowns and catatonia)
I want to talk about how I communicate. Obviously, I use my AAC device for the most part, but I communicate in other ways too, depending on how coinvent it is.
A few minutes ago, my mother told me she was going to Mcdonalds to get a Capuchino, and asked if I wanted a Frappuccino, so I nodded, and then stretched my arms upward to show that I wanted a large one. This is one of the ways I communicate, body language and gestures. Gestures are really useful for me, because if I am communicating a simple idea, such as "I want a large Frappuccino", it is faster than using my device.
I also make noises. If someone is doing something to me that I don't like, I might make a noise that people associate with "no", such as "Mm-mm", or "Mhm" if I am saying yes. Someone touching my device without consent? Making a noise that means no, and pulling away is a good way I communicate that they need to stop.
I also type, because sometimes typing is a better option than my device. For example if I am currently in a catatonic state due to a shutdown, it is a lot easier for me to type a few simple words like "I go now, hurt" in my phone, rather than finding those buttons on my device.
And guess what? Everything I just described is a form of AAC!
AAC is more than just high tech devices like mine. AAC is also gestures, noises, typing, communication cards, pointing, etc.

BLOG INTRODUCTION — ✮ ⋆ ˚。𖦹 ⋆。°✩
After the Blu (alien) Team nuked the Red (alien) Team, their base crumbled down into pieces, leaving the Red Team disbanded by the mass explosion. Thus, each Red Alien mercenary was left stranded alone in space.
That's (was) the Alien’s situation, drifting in space, all alone.
Despite drifting in the vastness of space all alone, the alien is determined to search for his missing teammates, carrying their spirit within himself.

Another Bella-as-narrator problem is Irina.
In the books, Bella doesn't meet her until the not-fight and only saw her once before that, at a distance. To Bella, she's just the person who ran to the Volturi and reported what she thought was an immortal child. Bella has no reason to like this person or to care that she died. Probably blames her for everything that went down and you know what, that's fair.
But the Cullens? This should have been a much bigger deal to them. They've known Irina and considered her family way longer than they've known Bella! Decades longer! Hell, they've known her longer than they've known Alice and Jasper! They met the Denali coven in the 1930s, Jasper and Alice in 1950.
And sure, they can be angry and upset that she ran to the Volturi without talking to them first, they can resent her for being the reason the Denali wouldn't help in Eclipse. But that doesn't erase decades of family ties. She's also horrified, ashamed and apologetic when she realizes she made a mistake. These people who considered her a 'cousin,' family, just watched her be torn apart and burned. That . . . that should leave some kind of mark!
But she means nothing to Bella so her death means nothing to the story. It SHOULD, though, if the Cullens were given space to have feelings outside of the Bella Bubble. Hell, only Tanya and Kate are upset by it; even Eleazar and Carmen don't seem to care! "The atmosphere of celebration was too much for Tanya and Kate. They needed time to grieve for their lost sister."
I get they're all relieved and happy not to have been destroyed by the Volturi and all, but Irina's death should have been a bigger deal to the rest of the Cullens (and to Carmen and Eleazar).
It would be so easy, too? "We're safe now, Alice and Jasper are back, why is everyone still so glum?" "We've lost a member of our family." "Irina? But she betrayed you!" "Families are complicated, love."
#irina denali#don't even get me started on harry clearwater#i know i've got like an old post on that somewhere#THAT death should have had a MAJOR effect on the La Push community#but it's mostly just a plot device to get funeral confusion#everyone's being so nasty to leah all 'ugh get over sam"#and I'm screaming at the book HER DAD! JUST!!! DIED!!!!#but you wouldn't know it based how little it seems to matter once the Romeo and Juliet miscommunication was achieved
