#wheelchairlife Neurology appointment today: as the UVA attendant started to push me to check-in, one of my hand-grips popped off. I had to carry it on my lap for the rest of the visit. Looked like a disabled ninja carrying some bizarre throwing weapon. 🤦🏻‍♀️ However! I had to wheel myself out because everyone was so busy. I paused in the lobby because my pain level was so high, and this guy stopped and asked if he could help me. He’s a custom wheelchair representative that works with patients in the Neurology Department! He pushed me to the car, and we talked options. I can upgrade to a better-fitting manual chair, I can upgrade parts of my chair, I can get power-assist for my chair (“but stopping can sometimes a problem” 😁), or I can upgrade to a lightweight electric chair. 🤞🏻His company coordinates between the doctor and the insurance and me, basically all the stressful stuff, and help me choose and get fitted. The Struggle for Accessibility in Medical Buildings

"Just trying to have my brain MRI done, please. Accessibility is SUCH a huge issue, even in the medical buildings that we are designated to go to," expresses Rose. This heartfelt sentiment highlights the ongoing struggles faced by individuals with disabilities.

Despite designated disabled parking, the lack of a front door to the clinic and an elevator that opens directly into the scanning area complicate access. The process of obtaining a disabled placard is also cumbersome and slow, adding another layer of difficulty.

I'm very fortunate to have my partner and caregiver assist me with navigating curbs and accessing the building. But what about those who arrive alone or drive themselves?
