The Fëanorians’ names
I’ve been thinking about this a lot recently and I wanted all of their names and etymologies in one place so I thought I’d share it ❤️
Feel free to let me know in the notes if I’ve missed any or gotten anything wrong
Maedhros
The Tall (sobriquet)
Nelyafinwë (fn, Quenya) - ‘third Finwë’
Nelyo (s fn, Q) - ‘third’
Maitimo (mn, Q) - ‘well-shaped one’
Russandol (epessë, Q) - ‘copper-top’ (from russa - ‘red-haired’). Given by his brothers due to his red hair. He also wore a copper circlet
Maedhros (Sindarin) - from maed - ‘shapely’ and ross - ‘red-haired’. Derived from Maitimo and Russandol
Maedros (S) - proper spelling of Maedhros due to the etymology
Maidhros/Maedhros (Noldorin) - ‘pale-glitter’ (from maidh - ‘pale’ / ‘fallow’ / ‘fawn’ and rhoss - ‘flash’ / ‘glitter of metal’)
Maglor
The Minstrel (s)
Kanafinwë (fn, Q) - ‘strong-voiced Finwë’
Kano (s fn, Q) - ‘commander’ / ‘crier’ / ‘herald’
Macalaurë (mn, Q) - ‘forging gold’ / ‘gold-cleaver’. Prophetic reference to his harping skill with laurë being poetic and not referring to the metal
Maglor (S) - ‘forging gold’ (from Macalaurë)
Magalor (pure S rendition) - presumably ‘forging gold’ (from Macalaurë)
Maglor (N) - ‘gold-cleaver’ (from Macalaurë)
Celegorm
The Fair (s)
Turcafinwë (fn, Q) - ‘strong, powerful (in body) Finwë’
Turco (s fn, Q) - ‘strong, powerful (in body)’ / ‘chief’
Tyelcormo (mn, Q) - ‘hasty-riser’. Reference to his quick temper and habit of standing up when angry (from tyelka - ‘hasty’ and (I think) ormë - ‘haste’ / ‘violence’ / ‘rushing’)
Celegorm (S) - ‘hasty riser’ (from Tyelcormo). North Sindarin as it keeps the m
Celegorn (N) - presumably ‘swift-impetuous’
Celecormë (Q) - early form of Quenya version of Celegorm. Relating to Oromë
Caranthir
The Dark (s)
Morifinwë (fn, Q) - ‘dark Finwë’. Referring to his black hair inherited from Finwë
Moryo (s fn, Q) - from morë - ‘black’ / ‘dark’ / ‘darkness’
Carnistir (mn, Q) - ‘red-face’. Referring to his ruddy complexion inherited from Nerdanel
Caranthir (S) - ‘red-face’ (from Carnistir)
Cranthir / Cranthor (N) - ‘perfect’
Curufin
The Crafty (s)
Curufinwë (fn, Q) - ‘skilful Finwë’. Fëanor’s father-name. Given because Curufin was his father’s favourite and most like him in looks and mind
Curvo (s fn, Q) - ‘skill’ (from curu)
Atarincë (mn, Q) - ‘little father’. Referring to his resemblance to his father in both looks and mind
Curufin (S) - from curu - ‘skill’ and fin - Sindinarised Finwë
Cyrefinn Facensearo (Old English) - translation of his name in The Earliest Annals of Valinor. Defined as cyre - ‘choice’, facen - ‘deceit, guile, wickedness’, searu - ‘skill, cunning’, facensearu - ‘treachery’
For reference: Amrod is noted as the older twin for most of the legendarium. Inverted in a later story when Tolkien was working out the etymology of their names when he also changed Amrod’s fate
Amrod
huntan (s) - ‘the hunters’. Collectively known as in The Earliest Annals of Valinor
Pityafinwë (fn, Q) - ‘little Finwë’. Name of the older twin
Pityo (s fn, Q) - little’ (from pitya)
Ambarto (mn, Q) - amba - ‘up’ / ‘upwards’ / ‘top’ and arata - ‘high’ / ‘noble’ / ‘exalted’ / ‘lofty’ / ‘excellent’
Minyarussa (Q) - ‘first-russa’. Called by others
Ambarussa (Q) - ‘top-russet’. Name they called each other
Umbarto (Q) - ‘fated’ (masculinised form of umbar - ‘fate’. In the 12th volume of The History of Middle-earth, it was given by Nerdanel after Fëanor begged for their names to be different. He changed it to Ambarto and gave it to the youngest twin. Used by no one
Damrod (Q) - Noldorin translation of the Qenya name Nambarauto (from namba - ‘to hammer’ and rauta - ‘metal’). Used in earlier Silmarillion material
Déormód (OE) - ‘brave-hearted’. Translation of Damrod
Amras
huntan (s) - ‘the hunters’. Collectively known as in The Earliest Annals of Valinor
Telufinwë (fn, Q) - ‘last Finwë’. Name of the younger twin
Telvo (s fn, Q) - ‘last’ / ‘final’ (from telda)
Ambarussa (mn, Q) - ‘top-russet’. Also the name they called each other
Atyarussa (Q) - ‘second-russa’. Called by others
Diriel (Exilic Noldorin) - derived from the Old Noldorin name Dirghel (from dîr - ‘adult male’ (of any race) and gel - ‘joy’ / ‘shout’ / ‘triumph’)
Maithog / Mailweg - possible initial names for Amras before written over with either Dinithel or Durithel
Tirgeld (OE) - from tîr - ‘glory’ and geld - ‘gild’ (in names meaning ‘of worth’)

So! I finally finished Curufin the Crafty! Having an existential crisis in his forge. How appropriate.
I've taken a fairly long break from my digital art project - meaning the seven sons of the FA well-known destructive troublemaker commonly known as Feanor. But! I'm back!

Curvo...I just need a hug..please

Sighing from the interruption in his reading, he caught a glimpse of your fatigue figure. A frown easily marred his face at the lethargy. “Come,” he beckoned calmly with arms opened. “You can lie in my arms while I continue to read.”

Morgoth hated the Feanorians. Or no, that's not quite it. He hated the Finwëans, he loathed them.
The whole line of Finwe had his hatred (and the hatred of Sauron as well, but that's a bit different pice of cake).
He hated them because that whole lineage, from Finwe himself to his very last descendants were the only ones of this world who could look him in the eyes and stand straight, to oppose him.
(Because Luthien doesn't count, now does she? She wasn't fully of the Eldar after all, no. She was other, and half. But the line of Finwe had no such advantages!)
Morgoth hated and feared them, thought not in ways that often could be perceived.
He saw weak, worthless elves who could look at him and say 'you are nothing'. Elves who could look the Darkness into the eyes and burn brighter, bright enough to banish the shadows.
Finwe, who stood between him and the Silmarils (Morgoth was wrong, Finwe wasn't protecting the Silmarils only). The High King of the Noldor who knew he will die and died with his head high and back unbroken, with eyes fearless and blood boiling with fire (where did you think Feanor got it from huh?).
Feanor, who slammed the door in his face, who spat and ragged and could not be contained. Feanor who he manipulated but couldn't corrupt. Feanor who lost only due to himself, whose death was his own no matter what Morgoth would give to be able to say that the Spirit of Fire was his at the end.
Maitimo, Maedhros, who endured torment and torture, humiliation and agony under which any other would break. Nelyafinwe who was rescued and came back, making himself the wall and shield between Morgoth and the whole world. Russandol who died by his own hand, because of his own pain and his own mind, his own actions. He who was never Morgoths, even at his lowest.
Maglor, a singer of such renown and talent one could be forgiven for mistaking him for a Maia. Makalaure who bend the reality in ways that should have been impossible to the elves and that were alien to Ainur. Kanafinwe who walks upon Middle Earth, enduring through his pain because it is his, his crimes, his mind, his hands. He is his own.
Celegrom who was hild, of the forest and rivers and streams, of the Hunt. Turcafinwe who rode against dark beasts and hunted in Oromes train long before Morgoths was released. Tyelkormo the Fair, the Cruel, master of his own soul, untamed and free as the wind. He who looked upon the shadows and walked right through them, he who looked at it and grinned with blood on his mouth and said at it 'i am better'.
Caranthir, never seen or heard but always there. Morifinwe who walked the thin line of Dark and Light with ease seen in none other before. Carnistir who burned with cold fire and walked in the shadows of others with skill unparalleled. He who was called The Dark, and he who carried that name with grace of the night sky. Unbending, master of his own life.
Curufin, so like his father and yet so different. Atarince who instead of jewels made draggers, he who forged armour that somehow was as unbreakable as the house that wore it. Curufinwe, The Crafty they called him, not knowing how close to the truth they were. He burned brightly, which made it all more tragic when he met his own end.
Ambarussa, one never without the other, red hair as the fire raging within. Amrod and Amras, wild as Celegrom, yet as silent as Caranthir. They who were twins, one an extension of the other. They who were so like their brothers, while being entirely different. They who burned the hottest.

And then there was steam... (a Feanorian AU)
Lately I’ve been studying Karen Wynn Fonstad’s amazing Atlas of Middle-earth which brought me to musings about the landscape of Himring and the surrounding lands. It occurred to me, that this part of Middle-earth must be incredibly rich on all sorts of volcanic/tectonic activity (being so close to Angband and all). And suddenly I couldn’t stop thinking about Iceland.
This in turn led me to think about the incredible variety of ways Feanorians could harness the geothermal energy which they would find everywhere: heating, spas, weapons... And then I came across this incredible image and of course I couldn’t stop thinking about Maitimo and Atarince. And not just cos the man is ginger and has (sort-of) a prosthetic arm;) Like I once said in one of my earlier posts, I’d love to see the steampunk version of the Feanorian story:)

Dear Lord Curufinwë,
Once again, I noticed people tend to keep comparing you with your father. I saddens my heart that there are only few of those who sees how different you can be at times. If you ever get troubled by the shadow of your father and his achievements, please, know this:
Whenever your eyes light up, there's a hint of gold and green in them, that gives your stare such wonderful warmth.
Your voice, while it isn't that deep, is rich. I heard it when you were singing a couple of times and couldn't get enough. Even if your brother Macalaurë had been there also. I can't put in words the way it stands (or osunds) different, but it always puts me at ease.
Your hair has warmer sheen to it, and shorter waves too. Am I too bold to admit that my fingers itch to browse through it? Probably yes. My apologies.
The way you move, it's so fluid and light and at the same time, there's firmness too.
The smiles that come from the bottom of your heart are a sight to behold. I miss them.
There's a lot more to see if one looks for it. Surely I'm not the only one who niticed? May the heartfelt smiles find their way back on your lips.
Sincerely, your silent, timid shadow.

Tucking your letter into the inner pockets on his robe, he gave it a light pat as it sat beside his heart and smiled internally. It wasn't every day, in fact, he had never received a letter from anyone admiring or acknowledging the differences and greatest in him. These were words he would keep quietly to himself.

The seven sons of Fëanor were Maedhros the tall; Maglor the mighty singer, whose voice was heard far over land and sea; Celegorm the fair, and Caranthir the dark; Curufin the crafty, who inherited most his father’s skill of hand; and the youngest Amrod and Amras, who were twin brothers, alike in mood and face.

I headcanon that when he was a toddler, Atarinkë had a phase during which he only accepted Fëanáro’s arms
