I mean I'd say he's absolutely following royal elven precedent going on a perilous, reckless and spontaneous but well intentioned quest! The job of elven royalty seems to be being a popular figurehead among their people and also putting themselves on the frontlines facing nearly every threat their kingdom chooses to engage with personally! Is there a high mortality rate among elven royals? Admittedly, yes (not entirely unrelated to the often miserable decisions they have to pick between). This does not make Legolas' position as diplomat to Rivendell less polite as a royal turning up in person to deliver the message still means something (even if the trek across varyingly dangerous lands is pretty standard for elves, particularly royalty).

But honestly even if Legolas doesn't have siblings it absolutely tracks he's wandering around as just some elf whilst being royalty (his father is immortal, it'll be fine probably plus popular vote can decide a new king in a pinch as it did for Oropher): I mean just look at Finrod in First Age Beleriand for a similar example of being approachable and making friends being a great networking technique!

(Legolas could well have a living mother and multiple siblings as far as we know in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books, he may not be Thranduil's heir, I personally enjoy the idea of him having more than one living family member)

The human kingdoms being so strict among themselves about hierarchies because it's more present history tracks just as much as them being baffled by Legolas' everything given the scarce cultural contact Mirkwood has with other populations. Elves also seem to have less of a class divide given they're all immortal and presumably it's harder to gatekeep wealth and meeting one's basic needs when you're all essentially stuck with each other for an eternity, a low birth rate and many human life times worth of years to acquire useful skills needed to get by relatively self sufficiently.

Legolas is charming in his eccentricities though, I agree. The majority silvan mirkwood/greenwood population don't seem to stand on much formal ceremony.

I think that one of the funniest things about Legolas (especially in the movies) is that he’s literally the only Elvish prince in all of Middle-Earth but everyone treats him like he’s just a random guy. And he ACTS like just a random guy as well which makes it even better

@chthonion I decided to start my reread from when Elrond shows up and honestly it is so delightful to see Elrond be a hater for once in his life. anyway Elrond saying he'd rather have Annatar sit somewhere else after they find Maglor inspired the first part of this silly video and the rest sort of turned up on their own.

I actually wrote it on my art blog some time ago, but I could never find the original post of the idea, since I saw it on Pinterest without credits and Google wasn't of much help. But since I found it now, and completely by accident, I'm posting my first ever song attempt again. I honestly have no idea if somebody would be actually able to sing it, but oh well. Maybe I'll improve the rhymes sometime in the future.

I also tried to apply Tolkien’s style of merry songs, so... yeah. Well... here it is:

The Tally at the Hornburg

1. Lift all your pints and ales, 

And harken to my tale, dear friends!

A tale of a friendship unlikely,

Of rivalry that hasn't hindered it, not even slightly!

One, two, three, there flies another!

Over the wall, and up he goes!

And down he goes!

Down, down on the heads of his comrades,

Ha ha!

2. Come and listen closely:

Laughter, oddly seeming phony,

A laughter laughed by a one dwarf tall,

As he swings his axe, and another orc falls, down, down the wall!

One, two, three, there flies another!

Over the wall, and up he goes!

And down he goes!

Down, down on the heads of his comrades,

Ha ha!

3. Near the dawn, after night,

A call is heard through the sky bright.

"Thirty two!", cries the dwarf to his friend,

And the elf throws a sheild on the stairs, slides down, and - oh! - he fares!

One, two, three, there flies another!

Over the wall, and up he goes!

And down he goes!

Down, down on the heads of his comrades,

Ha ha!

4. Post-fight, the dwarf sits down,

And sitting on the ruins, lown,

He pulls out a pipe from b'hind his belt,

And waits for the elf to share the count of blows that he had dealt.

One, two, three, and the elf comes by!

Pulls out a bow, and shares his count!

The final count!

The count, that goes up to forty two,

Ha ha!

5. "Forty two, you say, eh?

Not bad, for a pointy-eared prince.

If not as good as it could have been!

For I, myself, am higher on a count that is forty three!”

One, two, three, the elf is distressed.

Not so easily bested, no!

"My dear mister!

I'm sure to win in a drinking game,

Ha ha!"

6. Later that day, that night,

The elf and dwarf sit down to fight!

To fight for the deciding ending!

And soon they are ready, with hands gripping pints, faces pending.

One, two, three, there's downed another!

Onto the table, and refilled!

And downed again!

Downed, downed to the glory of either,

Ha ha!

7. Into the night, or dawn,

The friends will not so much as yawn!

The fight is still on, neither will lose, 

While the bottoms of the barrels deep will soon be split in twos!

8. Attention! The dwarf sways,

The merry elf glances his way.

"Not too long until he collapses,

since it's really common for events in Middle-Earth to become the subject of songs, i'd like to raise you this headcanon:

The Tally at the Hornburg, a fun drinking song from Rohan about a Dwarf who beat an Elf in a tally of orc kills by one, and later that night the Elf beats the Dwarf in a drinking game by one mug of ale, on purpose.

Eomer definitely had a hand in creating it.

It spread to Aglarond and became such a common song there that most of the younger citizens don't realize the Dwarf in the song is actually their Lord Gimli, aka elf-friend.

Why did I have to see this.

Watching LOTR yet again and while I lovelovelove the way Rivendell is designed, it's gorgeous and harmonious with nature and undeniably *Elvish*, one thing has always bothered me. There are no doors. Anywhere. At all.

What are you supposed to do if you need to have a pee? Or jerk it? Or hell, what if it's just hella windy outside? Or what about the wildlife? Is Elrond's dwelling just like infested with possums or what?
