What is the forging process?
Forging is the working of metal into a useful shape by using localized compressive forces. These forces are applied through various tools such as hammers or presses. This process is integral to producing high-strength components for various industries, including automotive, aerospace, and construction.
Most forging operations are carried out hot, although certain metals may be cold forged. Two major classes of equipment are used for forging operations: the forging hammer, or drop hammer, which delivers rapid impact blows to the surface of the metal, and the forging press, which subjects the metal to a slow speed compressive force.

Cinnarine - I
Dear Diary,
Today was finally the day, 100 years since we re-opened the Artfexis Forge! It feels like we just started yesterday. It was a long road to get where we are now but it was worth it. It set a good foundation for the future! Looking back on it, it's been awhile since the old capital had fallen, almost a different lifetime ago but I can still picture it well. I can picture the winding streets, the marble towers rising, the air itself shimmering with magic, but the name evades me. I can feel it at the tip of my tongue, right out of my grasp. But it slips my mind. Perhaps it’s the passage of time, or the haze of fumes from years at the forge, but somehow, that single detail is lost.
Anyway, back in those days, Artfexis was more than a forge. It was a marvel, a living part of the realm, Queen Titania’s pride forged in stone and flame. The walls shone with polished stone threaded with silver veins, glinting under the enchanted sconces lining the halls. They said those flames were drawn from the eternal fire at the heart of the forge, and they never dimmed or flickered, steady as a heartbeat. Every tool, every hammer and anvil, was crafted with as much care as the works they would shape symbols of respect for the hands that wielded them. And we, too, were a family. Titania’s reign was a golden age, and Artfexis was a reflection of her: strong, beautiful, enduring.
Well, perhaps “enduring” isn’t the word, considering her end. May she walk among the stars for eternity.
The signs were all there: earthquakes rumbling beneath us, the increased pulse of the magma below, and the haze of smoke that began to blur the sky. These were warning signs we knew well enough, but no one believed that our city would truly fall. Even with Titania herself issuing the evacuation order, the royal word behind it, so few took the threat seriously. It was just too hard to imagine the capital itself might vanish in fire and ash.
Titania, though, never ignored a warning. She immediately called on us to cool Artfexis, to calm the restless earth beneath it. She reinforced every barrier she could, weaving layers of nature’s protection into the very land and setting us to work. Every tool we had, every source of power at her disposal, she used to fortify our home. But the threat kept rising, and finally, the inevitable happened.
In those final hours, she, along with the royal guard, all sorts of elementals, artificers, nymphs, forge workers like myself, everyone still willing, stayed to protect what we could. We fought back the waves of molten rock, pushed the fumes away, holding the lava back by inches. Titania was at the forefront, commanding and fortifying as only she could, yet we all knew the effort was becoming futile.
“Go!” she finally commanded, a voice that brooked no argument. “Get out while you still can. Live, so Sylvoriax can live on.” Most obeyed, hearts heavy but feet quick. A few of us lingered a bit longer, desperate to do something more, though nothing more could be done. A fellow fae had to drag me away, urging me to save myself.
And in those last moments, I watched her sacrifice herself, her whole being transforming into a final, brilliant barrier, a last shield, holding back the inferno for the precious seconds we needed. That was her final gift, her life woven into the protection of her people. And even that barrier, as mighty as it was, faded in time, and with it, the old capital was lost.
But you know all of this already. Grace her spirit.
Had she not held that shield, there’d be no forge, nor a life at all for some of us. I would’ve perished there, among the flames, if she hadn’t given us time to escape. It’s no small thing to have a life she helped preserve, nor to carry forward her legacy as a worker of the flame. Her sacrifice shaped the path that brought me here, and I honor her each day with every strike of the hammer, every piece pulled from the forge.
I still remember my trial, when I dared to petition the royal court for a place at Artfexis. Nothing less would satisfy; it had to be there, where the realm’s best honed their craft. For weeks, I combed the underground myself, mining the raw minerals I needed. It was a dangerous descent, but I had to prove I could face fire and stone as any master would.
Once gathered, I refined each mineral within myself, in my own internal forge. I was still perfecting that art then. All of the the fine control and the balance. I wasn’t sure I could handle the heat, the fusion, but the minerals came together, raw and unshaped, into the perfect geode, glowing like a heart of ember in my hands. Yet it wasn’t complete. It wasn’t worthy, not yet.
So I took to chiseling, one strike after another, each carving finer than the last until the rough form took shape. It became her, Titania in all her strength and elegance. The details were intricate: her flowing hair, the lines of her robes, the fierce look in her eyes. Every chip and polish felt like I was pulling her spirit into the stone. By the time it was finished, it was as if she stood there, a queen reborn in crystal.
That piece is what granted me my place.
Today, Artfexis is something different, something simpler. The Crafting Guild took on the mission to restore the forge. Under the watchful eye of the council, they stripped away the gilding and refitted the space with iron beams and rough-cut stone. Now it’s sturdy, built to endure the years and storms, with every piece serving its purpose without a drop of excess.
Plus, there are safety measures installed: steel doors that will shut if they detect magma overflow, enchanted drains, and reinforced walls and walkways. I’ve come to love this look in its own way; it’s a raw, honest place now. While it lacks the splendor of the past, it is full of purpose. When I walk into Artfexis each day, I feel a pride that I can’t quite explain. It’s not the quiet grandeur that draws me, but the pulse of the work, the way each strike of the hammer fills the room with purpose, with life. Perhaps that’s the beauty of the forge now: no glimmering presence, just steel and stone and a fire that keeps burning, a beauty of its own accord.
Like I was originally saying before I got lost in nostalgia, it's a century later, and I stand here as a blacksmith with apprentices of my own, teaching them the art I’ve poured my life into. I aspire to earn the title of Master Forger one day. That fire still burns within me, just as bright as it did when I first set foot in this forge.
My new apprentice started today. The guild finalized his spot, and he walked through those doors for his first day as if it was meant to be. He’s a young pyroead from the volcanic tunnels beneath Artfexis, where his family has lived for generations. Apparently, he used to be with the Mining Guild, but he felt it wasn’t for him. He wanted to create something, not just pull resources from the ground. I understand that feeling all too well.
What a lucky day for him to start the job! The square outside the forge was alive with color, filled with laughter and music as we honored the queen who once graced our realm. We sang songs to Titania, melodies that floated through the air, each note a tribute to her strength and sacrifice. The forging competition drew artisans from all around, each one eager to showcase their skills and honor her memory. The clang of metal on metal echoed in a joyous rhythm, a fitting tribute to the craft she cherished.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, the night exploded into a symphony of fireworks, lighting up the sky in brilliant hues. I could see the awe in the young pyroead’s eyes as he watched the bursts of color, each one igniting his spirit and drawing him into the warmth of the community. He spent more time reveling in the celebration than actually working today, and perhaps that was for the best.
He hums while he works, a low, melodic tune that fills the forge like a heartbeat, steady and reassuring, shifting the entire atmosphere. I must admit, I like it. It’s nice to have someone who brings a little warmth into the space. Perhaps he’ll help make this place feel like the family it used to be. Tomorrow, I’ll ensure he gets his bearings and give him a proper start.
Here’s to Artfexis, to what was, what is, and what will be.
Love,
Cinnarine
