#as a former academic

This is a big fucking deal that I think a lot of people fail to understand.
This is the first step in creating an educated population: opening access to quality, well researched, peer reviewed information. Making it free of charge.
Fun fact: you can also access most academic articles through your public library. If they don’t have the article in their collection, interlibrary loan exists. These services are also free of charge (thank you, taxpayers!).
And the best thing? Conservatives fucking hate this shit. So you’re not only learning new and interesting things, you’re also pissing off the people who actively want to do you harm.
Which is super fun.
We are pleased to share a significant milestone: JSTOR is now available free of charge in 1,000 correctional facilities worldwide, benefiting more than 500,000 incarcerated individuals. This accomplishment, made achievable through the generous backing of the Mellon Foundation, highlights JSTOR's steadfast dedication to promoting inclusive education.

i'm about to do an exam and i'm prettyyy sure i know most of the material but also these arbitrary numbers known as grades are basically singlehandedly responsible for upholding my ego so if i dont get at least 7.5 or an 8 i am going to be very upset i neeeed to be in the upper quartile of grade distribution. or i die
#you know when former gifted kids whine about this stuff yeah its like that except my grades#never dropped so i was never forced to form healthy coping mechanisms for academic failure#basically jsut dont fail. and then i will never have to become normal about grades#barking

Friede being that bridge between generations and the beloved student of Liko and Amethio's parents, to the point Liko's mother entrusts her daughter's safety to him and that Amethio's father acknowledged his work and kept his ID card long after Friede left Exceed and trusts him enough to let him know he always has a place with him..
Something something, once a student, now the mentor guiding their kids.
#breathtaking. spectacular.#friede beloved by many (me) and stealing the hearts of many (mine)#genuinely though.. he is so likeable. how trustworthy and reliable is friede for lucca (his former teacher!) to entrust liko to him#i just love how he just left such an impact on them. lucca never gave up on him and still helped him even when he was an adult#and crave never forgot him either. friede genuinely has a deep level of trust with both of them#(crave wasn't exactly his teacher the way lucca was but. he acknowledged his thesis so it feels like he is involved in academic stuff)#(probably part of the panel of those who read friede's research. and offered him work so either way in the hierarchy he was higher)#i love how friede is involved with their families. and how his path led him to liko and amethio.#even in the first ep. he stands between them. and knowing what we know now it makes their first meeting really meaningful to me#(also he has roy's grandfather's trust too. it's still not clear how he came to know him but roy's grandpa entrusted him to friede)#anyway.. friede the man that you are. carrying the themes in such a way.#something about him being raised and taught.. and now giving back to others.. namely to the kids of those who helped him#friede#character notes

I had a job candidate ask if there was anything they could do to improve their application at the end of an interview. One major thing anyone can do when applying for an academic librarian position is to address how you meet every single qualification listed in the job ad.
We have to use rubrics of different kinds to rate candidates, and the more equitable-focused searches try to remove as much possible bias from the search by focusing on data and facts.
You go through and lay out for us that you meet all qualifications, even if you just state "I am [a fast learner/adept with Word/experienced with assessment and pedagogy/a person who loves event planning]" without examples, you will rate higher than someone who doesn't explicitly state that. Give an example, and you rate even higher.
If we have to infer things from your cv and cover letter, then you will rate lower. We are doing less interpreting and more "Does it explicitly state x?" these days, so being blunt is good. We have to justify every decision and every "grade" so we're less likely to interprete things.
You were a server in a restaurant for 6 months? You are adept at handling multiple conflicting priorities in a fast-paced, user-centered environment! You can do more with less! You can answer random questions with a smile! You've dealt with difficult patrons and ended every interaction positively! You know when to refer an issue up the chain of command! There are soooooooo many ways you can connect a non-library job to library work! Please do so!!
So my best advice is go through the job ad, state in your cover letter how you meet every required and preferred quality even the slightest. We want to hire you! We really do! Make it easy on us!
My qualifications: 20 years of academic library search committee experience.

me [takes your face gently between my hands]: hob gadling would not be a history professor at any number of british universities because of how humanities academia works and even if he were, rose walker would not be his student or advisee.
#sandman#hob gadling#sorry but it's true#a) history professor is not a romantic position and y'all are demonstrating you do not know how grad school or the academic job market work#b) that's horrifying. straight up horrifying. that you want this man to be in charge of shaping historical narrative.#(you do realize he'd do it IN HIS FAVOR; yes?? and that's not a good thing??)#c) rose is american. and a writer. do i have a headcanon where she goes into history? yes.#but if she went to the UK it'd most likely be about connecting with her personal family history and uh.#hob gadling is connected with that in such a way she would not just ''forgive'' or ''move past''#(bc holy shit why should she??)#like. if she's researching unity or her earlier ancestors she's not going to be taking classes of or be the personal mentee of a white dude#(who also happened to be a former slaver...who everyone hc's as studying medieval hist anyway)#if y'all hc hob gadling as teaching black history...fucking don't??#whoops the disc horse#but whiteness is always afforded the language of the human#but also re: point a) i'm saying it mostly bc he doesn't fucking age#sorry but like. ppl do be noticing that.#especially in academia.

What’s your favorite part of writing The Prison of the Phoenix so far? Any particular quote or phrase? A scene? Some dialogue? Maybe a small minute detail that you liked? Details encouraged 👀✨
Ooh yay! I love that I'm getting an ask about The Prison of the Phoenix. The easy answer to this was always going to be that my favorite part is getting the chance to write with @wisteria-lodge. But that’s hardly unique to this fic and doesn’t feel like it’s really in keeping with the spirit of the question. But I wanted to say it anyway.
My real answer is that there have been a few favorite parts about it.
In a lot of ways, this fic has been a long term dream of mine. I remember reading long Snape POV fics when I was younger and wanting to write something like that someday. At the time, I didn’t have the skills and it seemed like such a far away impossible goal. But now I’m at a point where I can write the kinds of stories I dreamed of.
I really love the way Severus POV lets you talk in narration. It let you phrase things in certain ways that other characters we've written don't. Like calling academic articles he disagrees with “rank absurdities,” or letting me casually drop in words like “hematemesis”.
I also really enjoy every time this man is wrong about something. It’s often a reasonable conclusion or prediction based on what he knows at the time, but we know more about the situation than he does. He’s a very fun man to put into situations.
One fun detail we included was the way that one of the first things Dumbledore does in our fic is call Severus “dear boy”. The same as he calls Harry. We wanted to subtly connect the degree of control he has over the two of them, and their lives. They’re two of the people he has in his collection.
#the prison of the phoenix#prison of the phoenix#Harry Potter#tpotp#hp#hp fanfic#severus snape#nichewrites#nichepastiche#I’ve also enjoyed the chance to give Severus an entirely one sided academic beef with Damocles Belby#Then there’s the always delightful former fuckboy turned wife guy Lucius Malfoy#There's honestly so much about this fic I'm happy about

Do you know anywhere I can read about parchment practices of the middle ages?
raymond clemens + timothy graham's introduction to manuscript studies starts with a section about writing supports that covers parchment manufacture and other writing surfaces before going on to talk more about how manuscripts and books were constructed and assembled
the irish hand by t. o'neill is a nice introduction to irish manuscripts but to be honest it's more focused on specific books rather than their production and on writing systems more widely. it's a nice one for seeing glimpses of marginalia and notes written inside books though
here's a blog post about decorating flaws in parchment to make them part of the page. the BL has a number of posts on their conservation blog about working with medieval parchment and the various preservation challenges it can pose. this is however mostly looking at them from a modern conservation perspective rather than a medieval creative perspective
here's a useful overview of parchment with close-up pictures. the other pages on this site look like a good place to start with learning about making and using manuscripts in general.
unfortunately this is primarily not a topic i learned from books/written sources so my reading recommendations are a bit thin on the ground
#i'm a triple threat of former calligrapher former librarian and former academic medievalist lmao i've learned shit from practice#probably the only topic where my knowledge significantly outweighs my ability to give book recommendations ngl#answered#dagmarsverker#parchment problems

Bloodweave idea that came to me the moment I laid down to sleep:
Gale somehow using magic to create a barrier for Astarion so the sun doesn't hurt him, but the catch is that it lasts as long as Gale is alive.
#this is angst potential CITY baby#post illithids ofc#im thinking unascended Astarian and professor / academic Gale or non canon ending#or an au completely#but the end of life fics for gale? gale feeling guilty?#OR Gale gets targeted by astarians enemies / jealous spawn nc they dont think hurting gale will hurt astarian#but taking away his daylight privileges would#but they dont know astarian - the former is his main concern#bloodweave

I am truly haunted by someone saying on a (long since abandoned) book podcast that the love interest not liking dogs in romance novels is rarer than pseudo-incest in romance novels
#and then expressing that she's much more uncomfortable with the former because 'men hating dogs is just such a red flag irl' ?????#1. very revelatory and interesting as someone who likes/has an academic interest in genre fiction#2. what are we doing#books#save

#im at such a weird point in my life. trying to choose between a phd and a doomed life as an academic and like just not doing that.#its crazy how not terrible i feel when im not in school. just give me tasks to do and i will do them. dont let me think.#but then im just avoiding my responsibilities. i dunno. i just feel like i would be happier with a structured job that ends when the day#is over. which is y my dad thinks i should get a government job. one of my former lab mates got a government job and he's settling into#spending the rest of his life out in Colorado. which is so weird. i dont kno how long ill be in the place im in now. will it b 4 more years?#or will it be only a few months? will i go back to school in the fall? its looking like yes bc i dont have a job lined up. but maybe ill#keep applying and dip out. let my dreams die in favor of balance and sanity. maybe some things arent meant to be.#its just so gutting. i was talking to my coworker this week. saying that im interested in so many things. i could have studied anything else#and traveled a completely different path. and a guy across the room was like: its never too late. but it feels like its too late. too late#to spend another impossible amount of money on getting a different degree. restarting on a second masters project. im almost 30.#im supposed to b saving money so that i can not work forever. but i cant do that if im just a student forever. so maybe i should just get a#job. god. but theres so much i still want to learn. and im in the perfect program for everything i thought i wanted. im in the perfect place#but everything's falling to pieces. whatever. i. just tired bc im on day 5 of work and have to go in for a day 6.#doing something i havent done before all day. but after than im going home for a week. so ill have lots to contemplate in the airport.#this is not how i thought things would turn out. but im glad im spending the summer working where i am. im learning lots on a human to human#level. and no one bleieves im 27 bc i apparently have a bby face lol. nope im 11 yrs older than u my 16yo coworker#unrelated
