submitted by: anonymous
Art Reflects Life (51326 words) by @steellily Chapters: 22/22 Fandom: Warehouse 13 Rating: Explicit Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Myka Bering/Helena "H. G." Wells Characters: Myka Bering, Helena "H. G." Wells, Leena (Warehouse 13), Artie Nielsen, Claudia Donovan, Pete Lattimer, Amanda Lattimer, Todd (Warehouse 13), Abigail Cho, Steve Jinks, Cassandra Cillian, Liam Napier Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Bookstore, Fluff and Angst, the rating is for content in chapter 21 it is not E through the whole story Summary: Helena dropped her head onto her arms in front of her laptop. “Write a romance novel, he said. It’ll be great for your career, he said. Bollocks.” Helena, finding herself at a spectacular impasse on her latest novel, decides a change of scenery should help her finish the nightmare of a book she reluctantly agreed to write. Myka has been contentedly living the laid back life of a bookstore owner on the Big Island of Hawaii. Perhaps a little romance is what is missing from Helena's romance novel. Disclaimer: I don't own any of the characters from the Warehouse 13 universe and I make no claim to.

I was thinking about Harry Potter today. A lot has been said, and rightly so, about anti-semitism and anti-queerness and slavery and a lot of other problematic issues. So I want to mention something a little different: the fact that the magical community literally created their own enemy, through a series of choices made over generations and by virtually every British witch and wizard.
"There's not a single witch or wizard who went bad who wasn't in Slytherin," Ron tells us. Maybe he's exaggerating, but certainly most of the nastier ones seem to be Slytherins, including the Big V-Man himself. And why does such a thing as a "Slytherin" exist? Because the entire British magical community continues to endorse the practice of letting an old hat choose one quarter of their kids to be radicalised.
If I was looking at schooling options for my kids, and one of the choices was to send them to a school which provides a safe and nurturing environment for neo-nazis, I would simply choose something else. Homeschooling, establishing a new school, writing a stern letter to the principal, moving literally anywhere else.
But the witches and wizards of Rowling's world are happy to accept the inevitability that either their kid will become the magical equivalent of Andrew Tate, or will have a great deal of close contact with lots of mini-Tates.
Over hundreds of years and many generations, Slytherin house has provided children who have those tendencies (remember, the Sorting Hat sees a child's potential and places them in the house that will nurture them!) with like-minded peers and authority figures. They are in an echo chamber. There's no intervention, nobody's going "Oh, this is problematic, let's try to help these kids be better, to think more critically, maybe little Johnny Magicpants could be a valuable member of society if we feed him some David Attenborough instead of Tucker Carlson."
They did this to themselves.

I threw together a truncated Lashton timeline, going by albums. (This is different from a full timeline I’ve been working on continuously, but still gives a good overview.)
Is this something anyone is interested in me posting?

"Children of Men" (2006)
countries will be like “nooooo our birth rate is falling exponentially and it’s effecting our economy” and immigrants will be like “hey can you let us in so we can boost your economy and fill your empty jobs and raise our children here” and inevitably the country is like “the only thing worse than a large scale collapse of our population is letting foreigners live here”

I don’t follow what plot line this OP is referring to but
That trope is in real life.
Just look at elder care.
Humans will always choose risk + dignity & quality of life for themselves, and safety + restriction and humiliation for the people they love, unless they actively fight the impulse.
🤷🏻‍♀️
i think 'I trust you with my life but not your own' as a trope is one of the ones that can always fuck me up no matter what

This right here is why antis kind of have a rough time in the Rurouni Kenshin fandom.
The story, the ENTIRE story, is about a man who did terrible things, things he cannot take back ever no matter what he does with the rest of his life, things he cannot 'balance out' or 'make better', who is....somewhat to his own surprise at times...still alive. While he does, over the course of the story, find a Found Family and love, he does not ever stop trying to atone for what he's done.
There are people even within the story itself who never do forgive him. What he's done is too big, or too personal, or both. The story at no time even suggests that they are wrong to do so. It is accepted that he can change, and atone, and yet still not be forgiven, because that's the nature of fucking up on this scale. Forgiveness can only be given, it cannot be earned, and sometimes it's just not going to be given. That is part of what makes forgiveness precious. The protagonist politely removes himself from the vicinity of those who do not/cannot forgive.
The manga writer was arrested for possession of child pornography (around 2017 or so, I think). He did not contest the charges. As far as I know, he did not put up any kind of stink when his writings were removed from the international market, or when he was put on a six month hiatus, or when he was asked to pay a fine. He accepted the punishment his government handed down. (There's a lot of people that think the punishment should've been harsher, which is fine, but srsly, take that up with the government of Japan, not the manga writer.) To the best of anyone's knowledge, the manga writer has served his punishment and has not reoffended.
The attitude of the Rurouni Kenshin fandom since then has basically been....it's fine if you don't forgive the manga writer, or cannot read his works anymore, if it's been Ruined for you. It's fine. It's entirely understandable. He did a bad thing, which cannot be taken back or balanced out, and forgiveness is a choice. And if you have a serious problem with that...well, this probably wasn't the fandom for you anyway.
