âThatâs not going to happen, Charlotte. Weâll be out of here way before the heat does us any damage.â She was almost trying to convince herself of this. âAt least weâre here and not in an elevator.â
âjust our luck.â alana let out a chuckle shaking her head, unable to hide her smirk. things being like this were exactly why they needed her. yes, it was warm but the woman didnât see that as an excuse to panic just yet, at least they werenât in an operating room, or the elevator that the shepherd woman pointed out. nodding in agreement, alana looked towards charlotte. ârelax. iâm sure you all have it under control and it can be sorted promptly.â seen as the doctors and staff here couldnât stop telling her how competent they were, now was their chance to show them.

elena re-opened the chart to take another glance while the other doctor was still in front of her. âiâm well aware of how to do my job. itâs not that your approach wouldnât work, itâs just for this patient, i donât think itâs the best route to go down. iâm sure weâll be able to get results either way.â
for every moment that alana spent talking, she also had a moment of silence to cast her judgemental demeanor on another; she was unable to stop herself. it was a constant battle for her to gain respect around here and further resistance only aggravated her. âas you wish.â she wasnât going to waste her energy on an angrument, instead, she simply pulled a smile.

do you consider yourself a good or bad person?
âgood or bad is overrated and is like seeing the world in black and white when it clearly isnât. i like to think iâm not a terrible person but it gets a little difficult when iâm kindly being told otherwise every waking moment of my career. we all have the potential to be both good and bad.â

do you wish you'd stuck with surgery?
"sometimes i do considering how much these surgeons give me a headache. they would have more respect for me if i was one of them. i'd be good at whatever i decided."

alanaâs eyebrows raised at the other. it was usual for her to encounter some resistance but not to get this personal with her. it seemed the doctors in this hospital felt like they were godâs gift to man. âyou can either take the advice or leave it, but if there arenât results, itâll be on your head and not mine.â
âif you think you know how to do my job better than me, then why didnât you just become a neurosurgeon?â elena questioned looking at the person in front of her, getting tired of being question on how to do her job.Â

alana was passing through the hospital, continuing to observe in between appointments. the woman stopped in her tracks at a conversation that peaked her interested. paging the wrong shepherd was an easy mistake to make, there was always chance of human error. however, it was one that could be very costly to a patient. she would make a note of this for the future to bring up with the heads of department. the woman knew that they hated her trying âto tell them how to do thir jobâ, but if they went against her advice, the outcome would be on them and itâd be their responsibility; stubbornness could only take people so far. people didnât want to be seen messing up in front of her, especially now. she stood back and let the other deal with them before approaching. âdoes that happen often? people paging incorrectly? That should be looked into.â
Moving across the country with three six year olds had seemed easier in Kathleenâs head. But now, only two weeks since the entire family had packed up their lives in DC and moved halfway across the country to join the rest of the Shepherd clan, everything was finally sorted. The house was signed over, their things unpacked, her children enrolled in school and as of that morning, Kathleen had a place at the practice and privileges at Seattle Grace Mercy West. In fact sheâd only just finished the necessary paperwork when she answered her first page. Making her way down to the ER, assuming it was a run of the mill psych consult, she quickly found her patient and some confused new colleagues. âWhy do you look so surprised?â She asked, but it was soon clear when she began looking through the chart. It was easy to see that she wasnât pleased as she slammed the chart closed. âOkay, you paged the wrong Dr Shepherd. You do realise that there are now five of us here. Youâre going to have be a bit more specific. Unless of course you wanted me to try brain surgery. Or maybe deliver a few babies.â

lauren raised an eyebrow as alana swigged the drink, it certainly seemed to be needed. she shrugged and gave a small smile âitâs fine, you didnât look too happy so i thought iâd try and help out and if that means sharing my sacred drink, then so be it.â lauren looked around the room where there seemed to be so much going on, but at the same time so little. âdid you note down anything interesting? get any gossip about anyone? any dirt on anyone?â lauren took another sip of her drink, finishing the flask. âdamn, thatâs me out. guess itâs back to the shitty wine.â
âit certainly took the edge off whatever this is.â she made circular gestures towards the table with her hand. âi really appreciate it. you didnât have to.â after people had made it crystal clear that they didnât like her, it was nice of the other woman to make a little effort with her without being prompted. âunfortunately not. i started listening to the actual work stuff at first but after hearing everyoneâs monologue once, thereâs no reason to carry on listening. iâm not really interested in the dirty but i suppose if i made an effort it could work in my favour. sorry that i canât pay you back in gossip. i havenât been here long enough to have anything substantial.â on queue, alana stood up slightly so she could edge the wine closer to the both of them. âthis is just going to taste like water now so i guess youâve made it a little more tolerable. so, do you want the bottle or the glass?â she chuckled.

âYou know, thereâs better wine, if you ask nicely.â He says over her shoulder and then sitting in the chair next to her. With a hand up in the air, one of the garçons approaches and Mark asks for a specific fancy bottle of red wine. He had seen her around and knew how much his colleagues didnât like her. He didnât have any reason to think any less of her. âItâs been an evening well spent. Got what I came here for so now Iâm just waiting for the fun to begin.â He replies with a smile on his mouth and then the bottle arrives, both their glasses being filled.
although alana hadnât been at the hospital for very long, the woman had already decided that she found the antics of dr. mark sloan amusing. pressing her lips together, her eyebrows raised before a subtle nod followed. she could sense his ego a mile off but had decided to humour him. âdidnât know there was that option.â she wasnât liked, she had to be the bad guy in the situation because it was easier for people to direct their anger towards her. she was used to it and she had worked on not letting it get to her for a long time. however, she was human and definitely wasnât indestructible so had to tread with caution at events like this. âthank you, dr. sloan. it must be very obvious that i donât come to these things often. youâll have to bear with me, think i left my social graces back in the fifth grade. something like that, anyway.â

âWell, itâs better than the cheap wine I had in high school, thatâs for sure,â She said with a chuckle. She took a bite of the salad appetizer that was in front of her and swallowed. âI am childfree for 4 hours, I can have a glass of wine and talk to other adults without a child climbing all over me or watching Thomas the Tank Engine.â She replied. âDonât get me wrong, I love my son, but itâs nice to talk to other adults that isnât my husband or patients.â She took a sip of her drink.Â
no matter how rubbish the drink was, she was going to finish it before calling it a day and going home to sleep it off. alana couldnât imagine going home and having to deal with a child the next morning; she didnât know how everyone did it. however, she always wondered why those that had children talked about them when they were finally having a break from them. some things sheâd never understand. she did feel a little lonely since her relationship fell apart but it wasnât something that actively bothered her yet. âi canât imaine.â she nodded. âif thatâs so, would you like a top up with this wine? i donât know whatâs in your glass at the moment but itâd probably take the edge off the wine.â she topped her own one up and then offered it to the other. âiâm alana by the way, wicked witch of the east or whatever the surgeons are calling me.â it was inappropriate, a comment that she found amusing and her intoxicated self had decided to voice it.

âthe wine is shit, which is why i brought my own drink with me..â lauren pulled a small hip flask out of her clutch bag and took a sip. âitâs honestly not been as bad as youâre making it out to be though, iâve had a good night â my favourite thing to do is sit and watch all the pathetic people fawning after one another and thereâs been a lot of that.â lauren let out a slight giggle, it seemed as though the brunette woman before her was about as grumpy as her if not even more so. âdo you want some?â lauren held out the flask to the other woman. âiâm lauren, by the way, lauren boswell.â
alana couldnât help but smile at the otherâs idea, even if it was juvenile. âyou were smart. canât believe i didnât think of that one. god, that takes me back.â sighing, alana clasped her hands together and leaned in so that her forearms were resting on the table. âi started off observing and then once that was creeping in i decided it wasnât worth it. nothing worth noting anyway.â people were starting to either disperse, get a little closer to each other, or weep - alana wanted to avoid that carnage. âthank you, lauren.â she leant in to take the flask from the other. âalana cahill.â she couldnât be bothered for the usual introduction of occupation and objective. taking a rather generous swig of the liquor, alan nodded before handing it back to lauren. âstrong stuff, much needed. better than the wine. i owe you.â she chuckled.

âgin and tonic. usually i stick to vodka and tonics but now plain vodka or plain gin is starting to sound appealing.â amelia cleared her throat, setting down her glass before glancing at the other woman. âunless you mean like whatâs my poison on this whole funding thing. i obviously want neuro to get the funding. and if you meant poison involving the snobby old guys we have to impress, i donât have one. because i think having to suck up to these funders sounds more boring than scut work.â
alana hummed to herself. âi was never a bit fan of tonic, i have to say. i think it ruins a good drink.â no one had asked for her opinion but she would give it anyway. chuckling, the burnette shook her head. âno, i meant the alcohol. i wouldnât be able to do it. they would probably ask me to smile more or some shit like that.â she carried on chuckling to herself, turning to amusing herself at this time. ârather you than me. everyone needs extra funding so best get brushing some egos very softly to secure it.â it was her advice. if it was followed, it would make her job and the relationship with the staff a lot easier.

alana had done a good job of observing the doctors pining for funds but as the night progressed, she found herself losing both interest in what they were saying and motivation to stay close in the first place. sitting at a table with a glass and a bottle of wine, the woman reached over to top herself up. âthis wine is shit but itâs free so i can only complain so much.â she shrugged. it had been a tough week for the woman and being constantly met with resistance from staff members made her walls come up instantly and adopt the abrasive touch. most of the doctors looked down on her because she wasnât in an o.r. and while that got to her, she felt like she had made the right decision; no matter how brilliant she was at something, there was always a chance that sheâd panic and wouldnât be able to do anything - the risk was lower in advisory work. âgod, i hope youâve enjoyed yourself more than i have tonight.â egos were very inflated and she had no interest in feeding them.

as the blonde kept talking, she was digging her reputation its own hole. considering the tough week sheâd had, her sense of humour ran very thin this evening. alana kept her eyebrows raised towards the other until she redeemed herself. âany extra efforts will be most appreciated, iâm sure.â she took a sip of her tequila while keeping her eyes on the woman for a moment before looking away. she did want the doctors to have a successful night; every little helped and if they pulled it off, they may not need her for much longer. âso whatâs your poison?â
Amelia walked up to the bar and ordered her drink, glancing around at who had arrived and who had yet to show up. âI donât even have to be here technically since I donât really work at the hospital, but any excuse for an open bar right ? Lighten up, Iâm only joking. Any chance to feel like a hundred bucks and work the room for some money to be put into the neuro department. I am a team player after all and I happen to like playing with the new toys we get.âÂ

it had been a long week and alana felt like the open bar owed her something. it was always hard at first, sometimes resistance never eased but the woman was good at her job, she would be good at whatever she chose to do and that was something she had to remind herself of every day. conidering she had been judged since she stepped foot in the hospital, she found the otherâs statement rather rich. âas long as youâve worked the room.â alana raised her eyebrows her eyebrows. alana was quick to order a shot of tequila to keep herself sane through this event; she hated it but at least it gave her something to do and let people do their own thing without them needing to comment on what she was doing and vice versa. sure, she could be a little abrasive but harsh truths sometimes needed to be said. âas long as you return the favour and donât judge me.â she raised her eyebrows toards the other, holding her shot.
It may have taken a hour or two but Teddy had finally stopped avoiding the people that she was meant to be buttering up, and it was just as awful as she had expected it to be. No she didnât stutter through her words, which was better than the first time sheâd been made to attend on of these things when she was still in New York, but sheâd had to laugh at all their unfunny jokes and she felt a little dirty for how sheâd exploited all her war stories. She need that drink. Having finally managed to slip away from the group of investors, she decided to reward herself for the couple of cheques sheâd managed to secure and just like that her drink was gone as soon as it had been set in front of her. âDonât judge me,â She said to the colleague beside her, âItâs not like I have to operate, I gave up on them paging hours ago.â

alana was observing. the woman had spent the night weaving between crowds while making sure her glass remained topped up; she needed a drink after aving things thrown at her all week. it was exhausting being the bad guy but if the hospital could secure more funding, she could redirect her energy into resource allocation rather than looking for a department to axe. in the end, she would do what was best for the hospital as a business and unfortunately, it was ruthless work. âthey needed to.â alana turned towards one of the doctors. âthis isnât just a social, itâs an opportunity and i feel like people arenât taking it seriously. they should be out promoting, showcasing, not constantly hovering near the bar.â it was an observation met with her opinion.
addie was excited for the gala, even though the hospital wasnât her main job she enjoyed working there and hoped to raise some money for the OB/GYN department. in some peopleâs minds it didnât seem as important than other surgical departments, but addison thought other wise and she fought hard for it. showing up for the gala, right on time in a aqua blue dress that she had picked out just for the occasion. the last time she had been to an event was the prom years ago at seattle grace, which didnât end quite well for the brunette after finding out meredith and derek had slept together on that fateful night. but time had past and everybody had moved on. âwell, they sure did pull out the stops for this one didnât they?â
