OPEN STARTER // EVENT
It was only Lucia’s first day at the Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital and she was already completely overwhelmed. The ER had been full with trauma all day, meaning Lucia had spent her entire first day in the ER and the OR, partly running between the two. On top of that, the staff had been talking all day about some doctors on a plane that had disappeared. The whole situation brought her back to when her fiancé died in a hit and run. She remembered when she worried about him and wondered where he was the many hours he was just gone, before someone found him dead in the street the next day.
The second her first shift was over she ran down to the hospital’s daycare. She had no idea what to do, or what she was going to do, all she knew was that she needed to be with her daughter. The staff and everyone else at the daycare was a blur for Lucia until the second she saw her daughter. Grabbing the small child Lucia wrapped Camila in her arms and hugged her tightly. “Never leave, mommy. Never ever leave, mommy.” Lucia whispered into the beautiful black strands of hair on her daughter’s small head. “Mamá, mamá” her daughter giggled in her ear. “Sí, mi amor” Lucia sat down on the floor, with her daughter still in her arms and pulled away enough so that they could see each other’s faces. “Te amo” Camila said smiling with her adorable high pitched toddler voice. At those words a few tears rolled down Lucia’s cheek. “Te amo" Lucia whispered back, looking into her daughter’s eyes. She had her father’s eyes.
Taking a deep breath and wiping away the tears from her face Lucia looked at her daughter. She was so beautiful. Truly the best thing that had ever happened to her. Camila’s beaming happiness made a smile appear on Lucia’s lips and slowly she could feel herself becoming calm. Suddenly, she noticed someone else in scrubs. Lucia dabbed her face somewhat more dry with her fingers before turning to the person. “Sorry, it’s been quite a day. Is it okay to come down here during work like this?”

As the long Seattle Winter begins to give way to Spring, the rain clouds have begun to clear and the temperatures have started to climb. With last year’s power cut fresh in everybody’s minds, Lachlan Covington has triple checked the backup generator and briefed the staff one too many times on the protocol for an unexpected electricity shortage. With the sun shining, the staff of Seattle Grace Mercy West are taking every opportunity to migrate outside and enjoy the rare sunshine, but there’s no time busier than lunch hours. It was during one of these outdoor lunches that the mutterings of a beach day began. It started off as a casual comment from one of the nurses after a patient declared that the following weekend was predicted to be Washington’s warmest of the year. Wouldn’t it be fun if they all celebrated together? No serious plans were made, the conversation went on, and yet by the end of the day talks of a staff day at the beach were flying through the corridors. By Thursday the halfhearted suggestion was a fully formed agenda. For those lucky enough to have gotten the weekend off, they’re more than welcome to join their colleagues down at Alki Beach for a barbeque and some games, or perhaps they’d prefer to take advantage of the sun or maybe cool off with a dip in the water. Regardless of what they choose to do, it’s hard to beat a sunny Saturday at the beach.
OOC INFO: As we gear up for our big anniversary event next month celebrating ONE YEAR OF TRAUMAHQS, we thought it would be fun to have a light event this time around. Nice and simple, our staff have been invited down to the beach to enjoy a Saturday of fun in the sun with their colleagues - as usual we encourage participation and can’t wait to see the creative ways you get our less extroverted folks down there! IC the event will span over one Saturday, OOC our event will be friday april 23rd (4pm est) - tuesday april 27th (4pm est) . Let’s hope we all have a better time on Alki Beach than Meredith is!

“I mean can you believe that?” Teddy asked the perfect stranger next to her, clearly still too irritated at her best friend’s insistence that she leave the apartment (not just the apartment, the entire state) this weekend and try to have some fun to remember that she had been too upset to talk to almost anybody that wasn’t Allison in months. “I swear it’s just because her girlfriend got this weekend off and she wants the apartment to herself. Ugh, I swear if they go anywhere near my room...” She didn’t even let herself finish the threat. Too disgusted to even think about what that would mean and suddenly wishing that their small, crappy, heart of Brooklyn apartment had locks on the bedroom doors.

OPEN EVENT STARTER // graciella guzman
Her due date being in just a few short weeks, Graciella felt more pregnant than human. Having pushed her big belly into a, supposed to be loose sitting, dress, Graciella’s patient had already ran thin and she had found some comfortable sneakers for her feet. Whenever she caught a glance of herself in a mirror, she felt like a whale. Pregnancy made her nauseated, sweaty, have cramps and needing to run pee for what felt like every five seconds. Making her way to the crowded hotel bar, Graciella tried to avoid any reflective surface to spot herself in, but still felt like a pissed off whale. However, tonight she would try to be ‘happy mom to be’-pregnant and less ‘kill me now’-pregnant.
Making her way to the bar, Graciella ordered a glass of soda with a lot of ice and lime in it. Honestly, mostly happy to find a seat. As the young mother noticed someone approaching her she tried to find some niceness inside of her angry pregnant brain and forced a smile on her lips. “Hi, there.” She greeted the person approaching her.

While Andrew was somewhat excited about the gala and the prospect of free food and an open bar, he still felt weird about going to the event. He wasn’t the head of a department or an attending, he was just an intern. He basically had to mingle and stand there and look pretty. He took a long sip of his drink. “So,” He said to the person next to him. “Which department do you think is going to raise the most money tonight?” he asked as he fixed his bowtie. “I think it will be peds, nobody likes sick kids, but I feel like trauma could be a close second,”

Charlotte wasn’t the most interested in these events but being the chief of staff meant she had to be there. She did enjoy getting a chance to dress up though. Although she had been working all day she was hoping to get ready at home and head to the event with Cooper but that was not the case. She ended up getting in her office before heading over. Charlotte had bought a new dress for the occasion. After getting ready for made her way over. She walked in and looked around amazed at how great everything looked. She headed to the bar. “Martini,” she said.

The gala had been the talk of the hospital for at least the last week. It was going to be a night of fancy clothes, schmoozing those who might be interested in funding the research, and eating and drinking more luxurious food than mere residents would have on a daily basis. It was the highlight of the calendar year, and Kepner was determined to make sure that she enjoyed every single second.
She’d pulled out the nicest dress that she owned, and while she wasn’t exactly the greatest at hair and make up, she was pretty impressed with how she looked. It made a change from scrubs and sneakers, and that was the most important thing. She was stood at the bar, making the most of the fact that she wasn’t going to have to pay for a drink all night, and ordered herself another glass of champagne - because why the hell not. “I think it’s nice how dressed up everyone has got. It’s almost weird seeing some of the attendings outside of the hospital, don’t you think? You kind of forget that they own clothes other than scrubs.”

Cat
character death tw, heart attack tw
Age: 61 Job: Semi-Retired, splits her time between the hospital and her daughter. Relationship Status: Widowed Kids: Veronica Blake, never call her Ronnie (5)
PERSONAL Cat and Ronnie got remarried. Their marriage was stronger this time around and instead of constantly talking over Ronnie, Cat actually sat down and had a proper conversation about children. They realised together what Ronnie was afraid of and why Cat still wanted to be a mum. They agreed to try IVF with a donor. Much to many people’s surprise Cat got pregnant on the first try. Cue a hell of a lot of stress for both women. Due to her age the pregnancy wasn’t easy so not only was Ronnie having to work through her own concerns about impending parenthood but she was also having to make sure Cat was alright. Maybe that’s why no one caught her symptoms until it was too late. One day when Cat was 7 months pregnant Ronnie collapsed. It was a heart attack and sadly she died. Cat gave birth to a little girl 2 months later and named her Veronica. She doesn’t let anyone call her Ronnie though. She wanted her daughter to have a connection to her other mum so the pair moved to Florida where Veronica’s siblings lived.
WORK Cat took a step back from being a surgeon when she adjusted to being a single mum. She still loves her work but her daughter is far more important. She took a year off when Veronica was born and then moved to Florida. She came back to Seattle last year because she missed the work family she and Ronnie had there. Now works part time as one of the neurosurgeon attendings at sgmw.
PERSONALITY Cat is still the lovely maternal McMom character perhaps even more so now that she has an actual child to fuss over. She always has time for anyone who needs her and is probably a firm favourite to get as your attending because whilst she can be strict she’s also patient and will take her time explaining things (recently she’s thought about going into teaching soon). But on the other hand she’s also quite sad and lonely and is likely to be a bit quieter especially if her daughter isn’t there for her to put on a happy face for. She’s good at pretending but considering she’ll have been at SGMW for around 9 years, not counting a little gap) those closest to her will know better.

leah walked through the doors of the hotel bar, fake id in hand so she could drink, the twenty year old had been snuck in by her brother at the promise of not getting into any trouble, he knew her though, she was always trouble. “ i’ll take a white wine please. ” she flashed her fake id and swiped her credit card as she turned to face the room, not really sure who she should and shouldn’t approach.

“don’t look at me like that.” addison said sitting on a bench a few feet away from the lake, with a blanket draped over her legs. she was in her second trimester now and was starting to show more. even though most of the people closest to her and mark knew about the pregnancy there were still a few people at the hospital who didn’t know. “let me know when you’re pregnant and they send you out on a work outing to a lake. what kind of person came up with this and thought it was a good idea?”

Working at one of the nation’s leading teaching hospitals means there are certain extra requirements expected of the staff, one of these being helping out other hospitals from time to time. It’s usually a simple affair, as simple as surgery can be. Arrive, do the surgery, get back on a flight to Seattle. Unless of course they never make it there. Unless their plane crashes. Stranded somewhere in the wilderness that surrounds Spokane and all of the passengers injured in some way, there’s only so much the doctors can do. They have to wait. WAIT. Somebody will realise that they’re not in Boise, they’ll phone the hospital and the search will begin. They’ll be safe, they just have to wait. And maybe that would be the case if, meanwhile in Seattle, the hospital wasn’t indidated with patients. An office building in West Seattle collapsed twenty minutes before the plane went down, the ER is packed and ORs in a constant rotation between injured employees and firefighters. With almost the entire staff on call and too distracted to pick up phones or question where their colleagues might be, the waiting might be longer than they first anticipated.
When the chaos of the emergency has calmed down, only then is it clear that no plane from Seattle ever landed in Boise. The legal team are thrown into a FRENZY, the Chief of Staff and the Chief of Surgery must explain to the board what exactly has happened, how they could let it go unnoticed for so long, and - most importantly - what they’re doing to find the MISSING SURGEONS. It’s been close to twenty-four hours, they’ll need to act fast if they have a hope of their colleagues coming back alive.
OOC INFO: It’s finally here! After weeks of planning, we are happy (or maybe not so happy?) to announce that the plane crash will be taking place Monday 14th of December (4PM EST) - Sunday 20th of December (4PM EST). This event will be split into two parts, with Monday to Thursday seeing the plane crash victims stranded and injured while those remaining at Seattle Grace Mercy West deal with the buildings collapse and moving along to the aftermath of the crash when the survivors have been found Friday through to Sunday. Plotting may now officially begin, the admins have created a discord for the muns who will be involved with the crash - you will be receiving your invite shortly! Underneath the cut you’ll find not only injuries from the crash, but also how your muse at the hospital has been delegated. If your character is not on the list you may still participate in the event, they just haven’t been delegated to a surgery and may be in the pit or with routine patients!
Cormac Hayes has woken up on the forest floor, he can’t remember how he got there. And he might be more concerned about that fact if not for the agonising pain that shoots through his hand every time he tried to move it. It doesn’t feel like a sprain or a broken bone, it feels like nerve damage.
When Elena Sloan finally came to, she didn’t immediately realise what was wrong with her, or why she could no longer feel her arm. It was only when she turned her head to inspect it that she realised that she’d passed out from the pain of being crushed underneath a part of the plane’s wing.
It might seem as though Derek Shepherd has gotten off lightly. Some scratches, minor burns and he’s guessing that he has a mild concussion from the pounding in his head. What he doesn’t realise yet, with the adrenaline coursing through his veins, is that he’s exhibiting early signs of PTSD.
AJ Murphy finds himself in a pretty similar boat, the only external injuries being scratches and burns. However, considering he’s floating in and out of consciousness his concussion might be more severe than Shepherd’s.
Mia Porter has been staring at her leg since the moment she regained consciousness. More accurately she’s staring at the femur that has broken and punctured through the skin. She has an open fracture and is sitting on a dirty forest floor, there’s only so much time before infection becomes an issue.
Outwardly, there seems to be very little wrong with Ximena Avery, and perhaps the dizziness or sudden headache can all be attributed to the stress of the crash. However, the numbness on the left side of her body? The growing pain in her abdomen? It seems likely to be an internal injury.
The crash has left Cat Blake with a large cut on her arm which might not be so concerning, especially considering the more severe injuries surrounding her, if it wasn’t for the debris that had gathered in the wound while she was unconscious.
When she’d first regained consciousness and realised that the plane crashing hadn’t been a vivid nightmare, Leah Murphy did a quick assessment of herself. She’d thought she was fine all things considered, until she’d tried to stand and her broken fibula had caused her knees to buckle and her body to crash to the ground again.
Waking up initially still trapped inside the plane had been enough to distract Nico Kim from the searing pain on the right side of his body, but once he was safely out of the aircraft the agony of his broken ribs and fractured ulna had taken full effect.

‘It’ll be fun! We’ll have fun!’ Kathleen should have known better, her husband’s words running through her head as she scowled down at the drink in her hand. He’s promised that this would be a stress free weekend, that they’d just attend a couple of lectures, go to the mixer and then the weekend would be all theirs to reconnect. With everything going on - their fellowships, the treatment, her paper - they desperately needed sometime to just be themselves together...and yet she found herself stood alone in a ballroom filled with people she didn’t know because Max had refused to listen to her when she’d said that chicken was pink. And to top everything off the drink in her hand wasn’t even alcohol (stupid IVF). She couldn’t help but think this was the worst Friday night ever as she sipped on the water in her hand.

━━ ✦ EVENT 05: SURGICAL BOARDS part two: examination session one
LOCATION: HOTEL CORRIDOR, AWAITING THE BOARDS.
April had been there early, of course. She hadn’t had much choice, the concept of sleep had been lost on her that night. Everything that had happened with Jackson was crystal clear in her mind, replaying it over and over again in the absence of sleep. She couldn’t help herself - she’d broken one of the biggest promises she’d ever made, if not the biggest, and she was bound to spend more than a couple of minutes thinking about it.
She wanted to speak to Jackson, but she was far too distracted. Distracted by the fact that more than anything she wanted to speak to Jesus, call on him for guidance, and yet she couldn’t. She couldn’t call on him, because she had always been a virgin to show her love for Jesus, and now that had gone. Now to her, Jesus hated her, and there was no way for her to change that.
“April Kepner.” Her name was called into the hallway, and she had no choice but to shift her focus. There was nothing more she could do now, she had to go for it and do her best: whether Jesus was set to be on her side for it or not. There was no turning back now.
LOCATION: ROOM 403.
April introduced herself to examiners politely, before taking a seat on the sofa opposite the chairs that they had set up for themselves. She took a deep breath, and composed herself as much as she could. I am a soldier. She reminded herself, there was nothing that should be able to get in the way of these questions. She assured herself that she had studying hard, more than some of the other residents. She had this.
"Welcome to the american medical board of surgery certifying examination. We’ll give you four separate scenarios in 3 thirty minute sessions, with ten minute breaks in between.” The examiner began to explain the process, and April took the time to absorb the information, and take some deep breaths. “To pass the test, you must pass two of the three sessions, Now you can fail a session and still pass, but examiners are not permitted to indicate whether you passed or failed each session.” Another deep breath. “You’ll be rated on your ability to diagnose, manage treatment handle the unexpected, basically the strength of your constitution in crisis. When we move on to the next scenario, there is no doubling back, meaning once a question is answered there is no going back to it.”
The redhead nodded slowly, confirming to both examiners that she had understood the process and how the boards were set to go ahead. Nothing she didn’t know from her knowledge of the boards already, but it was nice to hear it from those who held her fate in their hands. Because they really did: hold her fate in their hands, that is.
The examiner began, without hesitation. “A 65 year old woman is being seen by her primary care physician for a workup of osteoporosis when she is found to have elevated calcium. Her P.T.H level was well above normal. Her doctor sends her to you.”
April took a moment to compose herself, before she began to think through the scenario that had been forward to her already. “Elevated calcium and P.T.H would suggest primary hyperparathyroidism. I would offer the patient a parathyroidectomy, first exploring the right side, and if that gland is large then I would biopsy it.” She began, before her brows came together in a frown as she thought through the next steps, back tracking on what had been said already. “Um, after doing the biopsy I would... hang - hang on.” She paused, her brain running at a hundred miles an hour. “What - what did the pathologist report say?”
“Path comes back with parathyroid hyperplasia.” The examiner confirmed, though this only left April with more questions regarding the scenario than it did provide her with answers. “Uh - um, and how large was the gland?” She asked, as nerves and panic began to seep into her without much hesitation.
This was it, this was the beginning of what she hoped would be the final exams of her career.
