As a borderline aromantic I absolutely love Star Trek AOS. Romance just isn't a plot point, sure you have some asides about Spock and Uhura, but that's about it. The 2nd movie says Kirk fucks, but throughout all three movies he's never shown having romantic feelings for anyone. I love them for that, I love that these are just genuinely cool space action movies and the plot is never pushed aside to focus on romance. I cherish them for not forcing romance just because they can.

I... don't like SNW Christine Chapel.

It's just, Strange New Worlds focuses so heavily on romance despite having much more fascinating stories and plot-points, and being a prequel. And even though they have a very good romance in Chris Pike/Una Chin-Riley they focus so heavily on Spock. Spock, whose whole character is very asexual/aromantic in expression if not in reality.

Interestingly Spock's main romantic relationships have been with Nyota Uhura and Jim Kirk, two cases which The Original Series would never be able to expand upon because of Racism and Homophobia, respectively. So why did the show choose an off-handed one-sided Unrequited Love from a white woman? Why change her personality so much that she practically becomes a new character, a Modern Quirky GirlBoss - always forgiven despite crossing boundaries?

She's flat, two-dimensional, and only exists to push a romance.

Hello! :) I hope you’re doing well ☀️ do u have any ace or aroace fics you’ve read that you would recommend? I’m trying to find good a-spec stories, especially in Star Trek or LOTR (It’s hard bc so many fandom spaces are so sexualized.) Thank you for all of your content!

Ooh yeah that kind of stuff is tricky because a lot of it does revolve around sexualized content. And the aspec content we do get is sometimes so focused on "here's the meaning of the word ___" that it can seem out of character :( but thankfully there are some content creators who make some really great fanfic! Here's a list of a few good ones I was able to find!

Also, shameless self-plug, but I recently wrote a couple Star Trek fics as well in which Spock is aroace (although I didn't use any specific terms and left it vague enough to be open to interpretation). I'll stick the links in here as well, feel free to check 'em out!

This one is very well written and authentic to the characters' voices! There isn't anything explicitly aspec in here yet, but the tags indicate that Spock is going to be written as asexual as the fic continues.

35 Minutes to Midnight

Ohhhhh man this was so sweet! I actually just found this one while looking for some other fics to recommend. It's TOS or AOS Spock and Kirk (I read it as TOS only because I'm more attached to them) and it's beautifully written. The tags specify Spock is ace and it's also written in a way that he might well be aro too--the dynamic between the two of them feels very organic and could be interpreted however you like! Not too long, but not too short, either. Definitely give this a read!

Rec Deck Adventures

This one is so fluffy and nice! And Uhura-centric (which I am pumped about). Also, according to the tags, we have quite a few aros as well! The aro rep is implied but pretty darn clear, and the characters are written very authentically. Another relatively-short-but-just-long-enough one. Very good!

The Measure of a Man

And this one's mine (don't kill me for including it on this list lol 😂). It focuses on Aro!Spock versus ace content, but it's vague enough that you can interpret things however you want (I wrote him as aroace, but who knows? You can even read into Bones and Jim--maybe one of them is ace!). I wanted to spice things up in terms of what rep is out there. Feel free to give your thoughts if you read it :)

Awwww yiss man this one is so good it's Legolas and Gimli, it's SO authentic to the characters and to canon (which is my favorite type of fic) and it feels so genuine and real. Very good aspec rep and very good Tolkien vibes. Love it

No Finer Friend

This was sweet :) it's got a real nice representation of a QPR (Frodo and Sam babyyy) and the challenges that can go along with that when a romantic relationship is present, but it's also super cute and doesn't lose that uplifting lightheartedness! Another relatively short one.

Hope Left

I honestly cannot say I expected to find this one, especially seeing as Boromir is already forgotten about enough (he gets so little credit! Arghh) but Aro!Boromir??? I've never seen it before and can I say this was a treat to read. Rather short and it has a lovely tie-in to canon!

I also have a whole bunch for fandoms like Marvel, Sherlock, etc. as well as Snape, so if you want any more recs just send me an ask! I also, as mentioned above, write fic, so if you have a specific fic you want just let me know and I will give it a shot :)

new pet peeve is people going “this fictional het male character is too horny and I don’t like it” when it’s not even that that character is shown to be a creep or anything, he just likes to fuck. what’s wrong with that? even worse if you think that about actual real life men. having a sex drive is not a moral failure jesus christ. it’s exhausting hearing that kind of thing when you say it about bisexuals, exchanging us for straight men does not make it any better

Is it just me, or do a lot of aro and/or ace people love Star Trek?

For me, I’m aroace and I love Star Trek because of the balance of logic and emotion that is required in many scenarios.

Kirk has to balance his attachments with the crew with his responsibilities on the ship by not letting his personal attachments overcome his duties too much. He is still the captain, and his duty is to fulfill the mission and still preserve the ship and its crew as a unit. For all intents and purposes, he must value the needs of the many before the needs of the few.

Spock is similar. As a half-Vulcan, Spock is ruled by logic. He must control his emotions and attachments to his friends so that they do not impede his decision-making, as it is part of his culture.

Star Trek reflects my own aroace-ness. Part of it may just be my personality, but I find the all-consuming feelings of desiring sex and romance to be illogical. With my friends, I see my relationships with them from a very logical viewpoint; my views of them are not obstructed or blinded by any “head-over-heels” love for them because I do not feel that form of love. Still, I value my friends more than I would any hypothetical romantic or sexual relationship. The level of severity in how much I value my friends is what I see reflected back to me in Star Trek.

Can I say as an aroace that I need more arospec and acespec representation. And I found Star Trek. So here are my arospec and acespec headcanons!

Jim is demiromantic or quoiromantic- 1. Because I say so and 2. People say he falls in love too easily but what he portrays on screen is more sexual attraction and platonic attraction combined with some of those good ol' ethics that make him help the person

Spock is greysexual or demisexual- Just because of both S1 Ep7 "Mudd's Women", S2 Ep 8 "I, Mudd," and S2 Ep14 "Wolf in the Fold," where he shows no sign of any sexual attraction to anyone! I'm also open to asexual Spock but I think that Jim is the exception for him

Bones is demisexual- Look, this may conflict with my previous idea of him and Jim having a casual thing (sex) in the Academy but I consulted my demisexual friend @tophatcat459 and she said that if they had a close enough bond them maybe he would. So I know that demisexuality needs a strong bond to experience sexual attraction and for most it's a strong romantic attraction but maybe Bones is different? Also he has a crush on Jim in the Academy so that could help?

Scotty is Asexual- It's simple, he cares too much about engines to care about sex

Sulu is Asexual- He goes to a planet where anything he wants can he realised, where people get love interests and he gets a gun. That's a mood so he's ace.

Chekov is Aromantic- Simon Pegg said in an interview when he was writing Beyond (I think) that Chekov is just horny, so he's aro

Uhura and Christine are both allo but they're very understanding

Also amatronormativity is no longer a thing and most of the crew who are friends hug and cuddle and have platonic intimacy with no one asking if they're a couple okay?

Okay but can someone please tell me why tumblr always headcanons super extroverted and hyper characters as bisexual/pansexual and very shy and quiet characters as Asexual/aromantic? I mean every pansexual and bisexual person i have met in my entire life (and also including myself) are the biggest socially awkward noodles who prefer being by themselves in a room, while every asexual/aromantic person i have ever met were super extroverted and didn‘t hesitate to make a sexual joke or two and genuily enjoyed being around people and doing stuff.

I need to say my piece about SNW and the Spock/T’Pring shitstorm

I’m going to just say outright, first things first

It’s fucking annoying (and at it’s worst Pan/biphobic and sexist) that people are saying it’s homophobic/queerbaiting for the Strange New Worlds to explore the relationship between Spock and T’Pring.

Like, did I miss something or was that not a HUGE part of Spock’s life that we never got to see?? Like “Oh I’ve been unwillingly engaged to this woman since we were seven years old.” Isn’t an interesting character dynamic. It also really doesn’t have to be romantic, I mean, it’s probably gonna be to some degree but that’s not the point. They’re clearly at least no longer interested in each other by Amok Time. I think that counts for something.

I know that Spock being queer on some level is incredibly important to a lot of people, (including me!) and god knows we need more mlm representation in media but also like-

We HAVE K/S! Spirk is basically canon! Spock and T’Pring being betrothed and that being a significant element in his life. AND Spock still having a very obvious, deep established relationship with Kirk in TOS and subsequent films can and do exist in the same universe! Amok Time happened they went their separate ways. Exploring the T’Pring subplot does not magically negate almost three decades of extremely queer subtext! All Our Yesterdays doesn’t undo The Search for Spock!

What is wrong with Spock being bi/pan??? Absolutely nothing! It would honestly make sense given what happens in All Our Yesterdays, The Enterprise Incident and The Cloudkeepers, or AOS Spuhura while Spock and Kirk are still clearly interested in each other. Spock is still obviously in love with Jim and his relationship with Kirk always outlasts any interest in women Spock has had, but the fandom collectively ignores it in favor of interpreting Spock as gay. Which is fine! As long as you don’t get rancid about it!

If you can ignore those episodes and elements of the AOS movies in order to continue holding fast to the idea Spock’s gay you can ignore whatever romantic things they might do with Spock and T’Pring in SNW. Just like how you can headcanon him as aromantic asexual or transmasculine or whatever else you want. It’s fiction! Go nuts! Be free! Canon is a template the imagination is freedom. But don’t assume the worst from people who wrote canon.

Also this really feels like the (imo shitty and unnuanced) “T’Pring is the bad guy” hot take wearing a different hat. It’s the whole super unfair “let’s immediately vilify the woman in this story” shit all over again. T’Pring is just as trapped as Spock is in Amok Time, by traditions, and by the fact they don’t love each other (whether anymore is a preface to that remains to be seen). Spock is condemned to kill or be killed by cultural constraints, T’Pring is forced to choose who lives or dies by cultural constraints. She didn’t want to (essentially) murder Spock or Stonn, so she chose a stranger. This becomes even more obvious if you read deleted elements of the original Amok Time script!

T’Pring is gonna be in three episodes, I really doubt that’s going to be exclusively composed of romantic moments between her and Spock (if there are any). I expect character depth for both her and Spock. I think it’s super unfair to complain about something we haven’t seen play out. Even if that subplot sucks ass, it doesn’t rule out Spock being queer or negate/sabotage Spirk in any way! It doesn’t erase Spock’s journey being very allegorical for being queer either. Just because he’s not the same kind of queer you headcanon him to be, it doesn’t erase that element of his identity, canon or fanon!

If Spock being at least mildly interested in women occasionally ruins Spock as a character and a show that isn’t even out yet for you. Maybe you should reevaluate why you liked him in the first place.
