25. People Watching - Conan Gray

I know this song is about someone who wants to be in relationships like everyone else but is too scared to let people get that close, but I'm choosing to ignore that second part.

Remember how we talked about aroace Bobby? Yeah this is about him. Hearing all about the relationships of his friends, watching people on the street be in love, and he so desperately wants that too, but he just doesn't feel like that, and he's confused, so he just sticks with people watching, living the love through their eyes.

But because I am unable to write stuff without happy endings, he gets his too. He loves all his friends, Reggie as his best friend, and he feels like it should feel romantic for him, but it just doesn't. And Reggie shows him that relationships don't have to be like everyone else's, they can write the rules themselves, so they become queerplatonic partners, and Bobby finally experiences all the joys he was looking for in a relationship without feeling guilty about lacking the romantic emotions behind it.

I'm definitely feeling an angry Carrie song for this! We don't really see how the breakup between her and Nick happened or how it affected her, only little bits, but I don't think she'd take it that easily.

I'm imagining her channeling her hurt into writing this song, and it's very different from what she usually writes, but she needs it and she's kinda proud of it. And when she goes and shows it to her dirty candy friends, they all love it and fully support her, and when they all hug, Carrie finally feels some hope in the whole situation.

These are both so fun!! I really need to do something with aroace Bobby, I can't let go of him!

It’s aro week, and even though I still don’t feel like I fully have a handle on what aromanticism is, I do get the impression that The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings fit well with it? because all the main character’s most important and most central relationships aren’t romantic ones.

Bilbo is considered odd (“queer”, even) in the Shire for being a lifelong bachelor; his close relationships are with dwarven and elven friends, and with his adopted son Frodo. Frodo shows no romantic interest in anyone; his close relationships are with Sam, Merry, Pippin, Gandalf, and later Aragorn. And the later relationship with Frodo, Sam, and Sam’s wife Rosie all living in Bag End - which is specifically proposed by Frodo - seems like it fits the definition of queerplatonic? Whether or not you see Legolas and Gimli as a couple, their closest relationship is clearly with each other. Merry and Pippin also seem pretty clearly the most important people in each others’ lives, and remain close with their friends in Rohan and Gondor even after returning to the Shire. Boromir’s almost canonically aroace, going by the appendices. The close friendships between Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli are prominent, while the Tale of Aragorn and Arwen is relegated to an appendix. Most members of the Fellowship (6/9) do not get married or ‘fall in love’ in any traditional sense (and of the remaining three, one - Pippin - is only noted briefly in an appendix). The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings both have the characters’ relationships with each other - and the importance of valuing and cherishing those, not possessions or power - at their heart, and almost all of those relationships are non-romantic ones.

Although I usually headcanon Sigrid as aroace, the one person I make an exception for, with her, is Tauriel, so I am happy to write them as platonic, queerplatonic or romantic. :D

Very big fan of the concept of Legolas just being the third wheel friend in Aragorn and Arwen’s relationship. Arwen trying to spend time with her husband but she finds Legolas lounging with his head in Aragorn’s lap while Aragorn messily braids his hair. Legolas isn’t a big fan of physical contact, Aragorn is the only person who gets a pass.

Legolas just being in the kitchen when Arwen goes to get a glass of water, he can’t cook for shit, but he insists he’s making dinner for her and Aragorn nonetheless.

Legolas being the third person to hold their kid because he was already there when Arwen went into labor. The kids call him uncle, he’s teaching them to hold a bow by the time they’re old enough to keep their own head up. By three their learning to wield knives. Aragorn is very stressed out by his gremlin children holding sharp objects.

Arwen’s happy Legolas is around, because it’s someone who understands her and her culture, and she’s thankful to have this touch of home in him. Even if he is a Mirkwood elf, and is therefore infinitely more chaotic than she is.

People think it’s weird that this perfect haired elf is spending so much time in Gondor, but who are they to question their king. Some people are convinced Legolas is romantically involved with the king and queen, and he does everything he can to fuel the rumor because he thinks it’s funny (he’s not, but he’s not about to explain to random men that his heart belongs to the trees).

Just Legolas splitting his time between Gondor, Mirkwood and the caves of Aglarond. He goes to the shire a few times, but he kept hitting his head on things so now he’s keeping away out of embarrassment.
