Well alrighty then shaking the cobwebs question let's gooo
Hmm what are their feelings towards the mc at first? Why do they feel that way?
You can't see me but I am holding a broom and cleaning the cobwebs as we speak. It's honest work and that is all that matters.
As for your question, I answered this partly wayyyy back when I first started the blog here, but this is their impressions of the Villain before their self-imposed exile, and as such, I will be adding their feelings towards the MC post that exile.
Archie
Arcturus does not know how to feel about the Villain. Milo has kept him appraised of their adventures over the years, and he has begun to wonder if they have changed, but he remembers them from before the exile and he is conflicted. He hopes that what he has heard is true, he hopes that [SPOILER] means that they are no longer the person he remembers. But at the end of the day, this is merely a hope and he will have to wait and see.
Adhy
Adhara is wary of Ophiuchus' new Minister of Foreign Affairs. Tales of their exploits have reached her ears through Milo, and she has heard from [SPOILER] that the Villain is [REDACTED]. She is to take the wait and see approach, because she remembers their callousness with other noble children and the rumors she believes they spread regarding her brother. Like Arcturus, she is taking the wait and see approach, but unlike her brother, there is no hope within her, merely a patient sort of wariness.
Vicky
Victoria had only seen the Villain from affair, but she knows of their reputation and has seen them at their worst. She might have been from a lesser noble family, but she has always been watchful and she notices things. Her love for life makes it so she is willing to welcome the Villain with open arms as Milo's reports do show a change in character, but even then, she keeps a wary eye out for she won't allow them to ruin what she has built.
Carmen
There is no mixed opinion, no doubt on this case. Carmen hates the Villain for their bullying. She is not aware of the Villain's exploit's abroad, so to her, it seems as if her old bully is returning victorious after gaining everything they wanted and more. It is made worse by the fact that she knows the story and knows [SPOILER] so she worries that they are playing right into their hands.
Milo
Funnily enough, for all that Milo's job exposes him to the worst of humanity, he is the one that has the most faith in the Villain at the beginning of the story. Since he gained his position as Spy Master, he took special care to pay close attention to the Villain and he has seen how they have changed and their feats. Still, he is aware that he was not one of their victims so it is not his place to forgive the Villain, and he knows that the Villain might regress to their old self once they return 'home', so he has kept his opinion to himself.
Blake
Simply put, they do not care about your previous reputation. To them, all you are is a potential rival. As another person blessed with the Obscurae Arcana since birth, the Villain had a much better life than Blake could have dreamed off when they were young. As such, they want to surpass the Villain's accomplishments and demonstrate that they are stronger than them, better than them because it was Blake who abolished the unjust laws against the Obscurae Arcana, not the Villain. Not Navis.
Val
Yet another person who has no previous relations with the Villain. Xyr opinion of the Villain is simple: xe cannot judge them for things they did before xe knew them, so xe will wait and see what is the Villain's behavior once they meet.
Rowan
Even before Milo, Rowan is the biggest supporter of the Villain. Fae knows more about the Villain than anyone else, bar Orion, and that means that fae trusts them explicitly. Fae knows their struggles and know that they regrets their actions, has seen their efforts to change.

Hello! I understand that naming characters can be difficult, I also understand that when we create AU's in which a character is trans or hiding and need to create a deadname/fake name it can be a struggle. HOWEVER-
When it comes to naming Black OC's or giving characters like Sirius and Regulus genderbent/deadnames I will not take any excuses for things like "Siriana" and "Regina". That is about the only family in canon who already HAS a naming convention, and yes, I realise not all of them follow it. However most DO.
So! For your perusal, I have taken the liberty of spending two weeks of my life scrolling Wikipedia to find a list of constellations, star names and star nicknames that could be used instead! Please use them I beg of you.
As a helpful guide, any names already used in canon are starred. Any names that MIGHT be used in canon (it's been ages since I've read the actual books, forgive me if I've missed any) are double starred.
And without further ado I present...

Tonight sees the comet move from the constellation Virgo into Serpens, a small and indistinct shape of eight stars that resemble a snake. Next to Serpens is Ophiuchus, “the snake handler,” and right above it resides Hercules and above Hercules there's Draco.
That's profound symbolically. The lizzies that have been controlling the world will be handled and we'll be free to co-create Heaven on Earth!
Atlas is a symbolic representation for division, standing between the divine and mankind. Notice how it's going down, not up!
And it's passing between Venus and Arcturus, as if between two legs of mother Earth, when positive and negative meet, a third force comes into being that unites both and keeps the balance and peace.
We can expect divine miracles!
"Ophiuchus |ɒˈfjuːkəs| Astronomy a large constellation (the Serpent Bearer or Holder), said to represent a man in the coils of a snake. Both the celestial equator and the ecliptic pass through it, but it is not counted among the signs of the zodiac."
Coiled snake represents kundalini rising, DNA upgrading, healing, evolution, ...
Interesting that they mention it's not included in the zodiac, because it's the 13th one, and we have roughly 13 moon cycles in a year, that the ruling forces have forced into a 12 month system in order to keep us locked in a structure that is easier to control.
13 is a symbol for creativity, expansion, transformation and the divine unity, living in the moment instead of focusing too much on future and past.
So Ophiuchus seems to be symbolic for enlightened human being. And Hercules is a symbol of the struggle of humanity for liberation.
Hercules becomes Ophiuchus. Mankind becomes enlightened.
Thank you for being here, thank you for contributing, thank you for evolving into an expanded version of yourself!!!
#ascension#musings#relax RFK jr will win#he is Hercules who becomes Ophiuchus#those who want power don't deserve it and those who don't want power do

August 4, 2024. New Moon
Overview of the visibility of constellations and planets
The new moon will occur on August 4 shortly after midday. The Sun and Moon will be in the constellation Cancer, but the Moon will be three and a half degrees north of the Sun. The constellations closest to them — Leo (through which the fastest planets — Venus and Mercury — are currently moving), Sextans, Canis Minor and Hydra — are invisible at this time, due to their proximity to the Sun.
The Moon, although not directly visible, nevertheless has the appearance of an extremely thin crescent, which is inaccessible to the eye. But the most experienced astrophotographers sometimes manage to photograph the Moon — its crescent-shaped reflection — even on the day of the new moon — at the limit of the capabilities of their cameras and software.
Let’s talk about what is available for observation on these days and the calendar dates close to them.
An hour and a half after sunset — above the sector of the horizon where this happened — the stars of the Ursa Major’s Dipper will become most noticeable. Under the handle of the Dipper is the constellation Canes Venatici, and to the left of them is the orange Arcturus — the brightest star in the northern celestial hemisphere and the head of the constellation Bootes. The figure of this constellation extends upward from Arcturus and is similar to the symbol of a parachute, on the lines of which the orange Arcturus descends to the horizon. This descent occurs quite quickly. And in a few minutes you will notice it without difficulty and any devices. Even to the left of Bootes you can find a dim, but noticeable and very beautiful constellation of the Corona Borealis — an arc of faint stars, decorated with a pearl — Gemma. The head of the Serpens stretches toward Gemma — the only constellation on the star map divided into two parts. The Serpent’s Tail is currently located in the southern sky. We will move our gaze there a little later.
Below the constellation Canes Venatici and to the right of Arcturus, the constellation Coma Berenices, not shining with bright luminaries, but very beautiful, leans toward the horizon, in the northern part of which a swarm of stars of medium and low brightness flickers, which does not have an ancient mythological name — only a number in the catalog — Melott 111. But it was this unclear starry glow that ancient people perceived as the luxurious hair of the Egyptian Queen Berenice. This was a sacrifice to the Gods and the price of the return of her husband — the Egyptian king Ptolemy III — from the war as a winner.
___
In the direction of the southern point, you can see the constellation Sagittarius, barely peeking out from behind the horizon. Sagittarius does not rise completely in the middle northern latitudes. Its figure, composed of fairly bright stars, seems dim and inexpressive here due to the absorption of starlight by the atmosphere near the horizon, where in the evenings there is always a lot of dust raised during the day. By morning, the dust settles, but Sagittarius will set behind the horizon much earlier.
To the right of Sagittarius, the “Claws of Scorpius” have almost set behind the horizon — a small part of this constellation visible in the north, but it is among the stars of the “Claws” that the orange-red Antares — “Heart of Scorpius” shines. Together with Scorpius (to the right of it), Libra, which was once only an extension of the sharp and long claws, is also hiding behind the horizon. The stars of Libra still bear the corresponding names — “Northern Claw”, “Southern Claw” — in Arabic, of course.
A bright star shines above Sagittarius — Altair. This is alpha Aquila — one of the main summer constellations. Its figure, composed of stars of medium brightness, really resembles a bird flying in the sky. To the west of the Aquila, there is an extended constellation of Ophiuchus — a constellation very rich in interesting telescopic objects, but poor in stars even of medium brightness. Between Ophiuchus and Aquila, experienced observers can find the constellation Scutum and the very same “Tail of the Serpent”.
To the east and above Altair, you can notice several miniature constellations — Equuleus, Delphinus, Sagitta and Vulpecula (in which on July 30, 2024, a new, but very weak — 10th magnitude — star flared up). These four constellations are located one after the other — following from bottom to top and from left to right near Altair.
___
In the eastern direction, it is easy to notice the huge Square of Pegasus — now it is turned so that it looks more like a Rhombus. Pisces is emerging right from under it — only the alpha of this constellation — Alrisha — remains under the horizon. But it will also rise soon.
To the right of Pisces and Pegasus, Aquarius and a fairly bright Saturn are rising. Neptune is located somewhere near it, but you cannot see it without a telescope — it is a very distant and weak planet. Even further to the right, Capricornus has almost completely risen.
To the right of the Square of Pegasus, there is a chain of stars of the asterism “Head of Pegasus” — it adjoins the Equuleus.
To the left of the Square of Pegasus, there is a chain of stars of the constellation Andromeda. Historically, Pegasus and Andromeda were drawn inseparably on star maps. This continues to this day — the constellations are connected by the star alpha Andromeda — Alpheratz. Previously, it belonged to two constellations at the same time. And above Andromeda, the beautiful and noticeable constellation Cassiopeia is easily recognizable, this season resembling the Latin letter “W”. Below Andromeda, you can see the constellations Triangulum and Aries. Aries has not yet fully risen above the horizon.
___
In the northern part of the sky, the bright Capella, shimmering with all the colors of the rainbow, attracts attention — the brightest star of the constellation Auriga, which belongs to the winter group of constellations. But in the middle northern latitudes, Capella never sets below the horizon.
To the right of Capella, you can see the constellation Perseus, whose brightest star — Mirfak — lies on the continuation of the chain of Andromeda stars and seems to connect Andromeda and Auriga. Closer to the morning, Perseus will rise high in the sky and shower the August night with dozens of sparkling meteors, sometimes called “falling stars.” This meteor shower is called the Perseids, and during its annual activity — from mid-July to the end of August — not a single real star is damaged.
The peak activity of the Perseid shower occurs on the nights from August 11 to 13. The Moon at this time will be located in the evening sky, and will not interfere with pre-dawn observations of meteors.
Above Capella and to the left of Perseus lies the practically starless space of the constellation Camelopardalis. In the city, it will not be possible to discern the figure of this constellation. Lynx, a constellation located between Auriga and Ursa Major, is equally inconspicuous.
Above Capella you can see the North Star and a couple of stars of Ursa Minor that are comparable in brightness. To the right of it, like an upside-down house, is Cepheus, adjacent to Cassiopeia. And between the Ursulas, the Draco runs like a winding river, its tail resting against the Camelopardalis, and its head reaches the very zenith of the summer skies.
___
In the zenith region of the sky are the constellations of Lyra and Cygnus, headed by the bright stars — Vega and Deneb, which together with Altair (located below them in the southern direction) form the famous asterism — the “Summer Triangle”. Cygnus flies with its wings spread wide. At the same time, the left wing points to the “Hooves of Pegasus”, and the right — to the “Head of the Draco” — a small and beautiful trapezoid of medium-brightness stars, adjacent to Vega and the constellation of Hercules, which also has its own stellar trapezoid — so it is called — “Trapezium of Hercules”, and one of the brightest globular star clusters — M13 is hidden from the naked eye in it. There are quite a lot of globular clusters in the summer sky. But the most famous are M13 in the “Trapezium of Hercules” and M15 in the “Head of Pegasus”.
A little to the side of the “Hooves of Pegasus” and the “Tail of the Swan”, in which the bright Deneb burns, there is an inconspicuous constellation of the Lacerta, whose dim stars are unlikely to be seen within the city limits.
___
By two a.m., the Aquarius constellation will rise to its maximum height, and the bright Saturn located in it will be very clearly visible in the southern direction.
To the left of Aquarius and under the highly risen Pisces, Cetus has already fully risen — a large constellation of not very clear configuration, the stars of which seem to split into two groups — the “Head of Cetus” and the “Tail of Cetus”, directed upward and decorated with the alpha of the constellation — the star Menkar. The famous long-period variable star Mira of Cetus is also located in the “Tail”, but it has already passed its annual maximum in May and has already weakened greatly — invisible to the eye.
To the left of Cetus — directly above the point of the east, Taurus is already shining with two bright planets — Jupiter and Mars. Both of these luminaries are located near Aldebaran, the brightest star in Taurus, and form a beautiful triangle with Aldebaran — a few nights ago it was equilateral, but from night to night its proportions change noticeably — the fast Mars is rapidly catching up with Jupiter.
There is another planet in the constellation Taurus now — Uranus. It is not visible to the naked eye, but can be easily found with binoculars a little to the south of the Pleiades — the most beautiful open star cluster in the sky. Another beautiful and bright star cluster — the Hyades — surrounds the orange Aldebaran, which does not belong to the Hyades, because in space it lies approximately halfway from the Sun to the stars of the mentioned cluster.
Directly above the constellation Taurus and the trinity of “Jupiter — Mars — Aldebaran” Perseus looks down from the heavenly heights upon the mortal Earth, holding in his hand the severed head of Medusa the Gorgon, in whose eye the eclipsing variable star Algol — beta Persei slyly winks every three nights. Perseus is known as the illusory source of the Perseid stream. It seems to us that the sparks of the “falling stars” fly to us from this constellation. But in fact, the trajectory of the orbit of the comet Swift-Tuttle is directed in this direction. In July-August of each year, the Earth approaches the orbit of this comet, along which small meteoroids — particles of the disintegrating comet’s core — fly. Some of them meet the Earth and burn up in the atmosphere. On the night of maximum, in an hour of observation, it is possible to notice several dozen (sometimes even up to a hundred) meteors. But they should be observed outside the city, preferably in the mountains.
Just before dawn, the stars of the Gemini constellation, Castor and Pollux, will rise above the northeastern horizon. These are winter stars, but in August some winter constellations already begin to peek out from behind the horizon coulisse, to become fully visible by autumn and for quite a long time.

How would the RO'S react if MC was stabbed and they just looked down at the wound unfazed and said "That's fair".
Congrats, anon! You won! This is both THE funniest ask you could have sent me and THE most in-character reaction for the Villain ever.
I am going to do this in deep crushing stage, since a similar scenario might appear in the story and I want y’all to have a taste.
The Villain is stabbed. Their reaction? “Ok, that is fair.”
Archie:
It takes Archie a moment to process what just happened, but once he does, he the blood drain from his face. A quick command has the Royal Guard chasing the assassin as he turns his attention towards you.
As he hears you speak, you can see his eyes closing as a pained expression paints itself across his face. Once they open, there is a fire in his eyes you have rarely seen, an anger that you had not thought possible. And yet, his hands as he cradles you in his arms and infuses you with the sun’s energy are so gentle.
“Please don’t say that. Please.”
Adhy:
The mask of courtesy you could always find in Adhy’s face collapses under sheer terror as she freezes in place and just looks at you. It takes her a second to gather her wits and order her guards to follow the assassin and search for a healer.
Once she has gathered her wits, however, she uses the essence of the moon to invigorate you as she moves closer as if to shield you from the world. Hands cradling your face, she gazes at you, eyes full of anguish.
“Why would you say that?”
Vicky:
Someone screamed, you think distantly as you look down at the stab wound. It’s not until delicate hands appear in your field of vision that you realize it was Vicky. There is a deep fear shining through her expression as she tugs you closer and begins snapping orders to her guards to go and find a healer.
Carefully, she guides you into the ground and cradles you on her arms, muttering reassurances as she waits for help with baited breath. It isn’t until you have been healed that she takes you aside.
“Navis, you must understand that was not fairness. Do not ever believe you deserve to be stabbed. Please.”
Carmen:
Carmen is surprisingly calm in this situation. After you are stabbed, she takes a moment to look at the sky and mutter.
“Spirits give me patience, because if you give me strength I will kill them,” before snapping her fingers and sending a trail of starlight to hunt down the bastard that stabbed you. Once that is done, she turns towards you and swats your hand away from the wound as she begins to heal it. “That is fair? THAT IS FAIR? If you wanted to die so much, you should have told me, o’ villain, and I would have saved you the trouble.”
She might be complaining as she heals you, but her hands are careful and tender with the wound, her worry shining underneath the bravado.
Milo:
Your would-be assassin does not get past three steps before a dagger is buried on their back, low enough to paralyze his moments but not to kill them. Milo is turning towards you, when he hears your words and you can see the moment the meaning of your words dawn on him.
“Your Grace?!?!” Milo sounds distraught as he moves closer and cradles your face. “We are going to talk about your reaction to being stabbed, but before, let’s get you healed.”
He signals at the shadows, and you know one of his runners has gone to find a healer.
Blake:
”Are you an idiot?” They blurt out as they glare in the direction of the would-be assassin and mutter a quick tracking spell. “Or are you just suicidal? There is no time for your woe-me act when you have been stabbed, Navis. Truly, where is your survival instinct when you need it?”
Blakes words might be sharp, but their concern is evident on the way their hands are trembling, the sharp hitch on their voice as they carefully push you down into the ground and gather healing magic into their hands. “That is fair? The fuck are you talking about? What do you think will happen to those you leave behind when you die? It’s not all fucking sunshine and roses after death.”
Val:
It takes Val less than a second to react to your stabbing as their hands drop to the hilt of their sword and with a flourish runs the assassin through. They don’t keep them alive, too worried about your health to take care on their actions.
Too pissed off by your words to temper themselves.
“Don’t you dare say that again,” they rage as they sheath their sword and gather you in their arms. They know their knights will gather the would be assassins body, so for now, they will take you to Blake. “There is no fairness in stabbing an unarmed opponent, there is no fairness in stabbing you.”
Rowan:
Few are brazen enough to anger a Demon Monarch, but it seems that Rowan has found someone foolish enough to do so. An inhuman growl leaves their chest as the shadows tremble under their fury and the assassin is trapped under the weight of their nightmares.
Once the assassin has been taken care of for future interrogation, they turn towards you and glare as they walk closer.
“I am well aware you have survived worse wounds due to your past adventures, but I fucking dare you to say that again.”

Over the next few days look for this “Christmas Comet” Leonard C-2021 A in the sky near the Big Dipper, Arcturus and the constellation Ophiuchus! It will be visible with binoculars and the naked eye - the tail will be a long as the Full Moon. Wishing everyone fulfillment of their dreams, love and healing in this holiday season.

Photo
First pleasant morning with mild temperatures in quite some time. Arcturus is the bright orange star to the top right, Spica bottom right. And I was excited to see the balance beam of the scales of my traditional zodiac constellation Libra in the space between the trees to the bottom. The blue-white Beta Librae, or Zubeneschamali, is the brightest star and the yellow-white Zubenelgenubi, underneath to the right, is the second brightest. To the middle of the photo is Serpens Caput, leading to the outline of Ophiuchus in the bottom left corner. Corona Borealis is at the top edge.

That's because the constellations were not all created at the same time: Homer and Hesiod only mention Ursa (Major), Orion and Boötes, + Pleiades and Hyades, which are star clusters, and the stars Sirius and Arcturus. That was in the 8th–7th century.
The Zodiac was developed in Babylon not much earlier than the 6th century BCE, when the constellations were adopted by the Greeks. Besides the Zodiacal constellations only Hydra, Aquila, Corvus and Piscis Austrinus are suggested to have come from Babylon (associated with solsticial signs and (by then antiquated) markers of celestial equator).
Eudoxus in the 4th century BCE then already describes the 48 constellations of the Antiquity.
It is thus very likely that Ophiuchus is a later addition, filling the space after the Zodiacal constellations were introduced to the few constellations known to Homer and Hesiod.
Babylonian astrologers – back when astrology was indeed both predictive and also had actually something to do with the stars, because they observed them daily ... or nightly, rather – only had the original Zodiacal constellations and they also remained the carriers of their astrological knowledge into the later centuries BCE.
(this is from Ruggles (ed.) 2015 – Handbook of Archaeoastronomy and Ethnoastronomy)
Since the decline of Babylonian tradition, the Zodiac has not been kept up to date, so it not only makes no sense because obviously the stars cannot have any effect on people lmao, but it's also an anachronistic monstrosity, because precession of the Earth's rotational axis is very much a thing.
so apparently star signs have been ‘updated’ and im a sag now???

Outubro Lua Cheia 2019: A Lua do Caçador É a Menor do Ano
A Lua do Caçador Explicada
Morning Venus Brushes the Bull’s Brow, and Lay Down and Look Up for Stars!
(Above: The Great Globular Cluster in Hercules, also known as Messier 13, is not an unlucky sight in a telescope! NASA APOD)

Lay Down and Look Up!
The best way to take in the splendor of the night sky is to lay on your back and gaze upwards, where the sky is darkest and the air thinnest. This is also your best bet to spot meteors and passing satellites. Some easy to recognize constellations are positioned directly overhead in late evening this month.
Position yourself so that south is below your gaze, i.e., chin towards south horizon and the crown of your head towards the North Star Polaris. Your left shoulder will point east and your right one west. Looking up, just east of straight overhead you will find the bright white star Vega in Lyra (the Harp). Vega, the western corner of the Summer Triangle, is the brightest star in our summer nights and the fifth brightest in all the sky. Lyra’s delights deserve their own focus in an upcoming Skylights. Meanwhile,
(Above: The late evening sky overhead in early July annually features Hercules and Corona Borealis.)
Shifting your gaze a short distance west of Vega you will find the constellation of Hercules, whose body is defined by a keystone shaped quartet of modestly bright stars. The keystone is about 6° across (a palm’s width), with the wide end north and the narrow end south. The hero of mythology is upside down for us. His sharply bent legs extend northward and his two arms are outstretched to the southeast and southwest. His eastern hand star (to our lower left) combines with four others to make a loose chain of five stars running left-right, each separated by a couple of finger widths. In classical drawings he is grasping the three-headed dog Cerberus, which he was tasked with capturing as one of his twelve labours.
Hercules is the fifth largest constellation in area, and was one of the original 48 constellations tabulated by Ptolemy. It contains one of my favorite objects, the globular cluster known as the Great Hercules Cluster or Messier 13. This object is a tightly packed ball of about 300,000 old stars. At magnitude 5.9, it is visible with unaided eyes under dark skies as a faint smudge, but reveals much more under magnification! It is located along the western (right) edge of the keystone, about one-third of the way from the wide end. Roughly between his knees there is another smaller globular cluster called Messier 92. We can’t see them visually, but Hercules is home to several known exoplanets orbiting his stars.
Hercules contains quite a few double and binary stars within reach of a backyard telescope. One of the nicest is modest Rasalgethi, or Ras Algethi “Head of the Kneeler”, which sits about 16° to the southwest (lower right) of the bottommost corner of the keystone (almost into Ophiuchus). In a small telescope, this star easily splits into a lovely pair of orange and greenish stars. The slightly brighter one is a red giant class star that varies in brightness randomly over months to years. The partner is a yellow Sun-like star that is itself a binary star too tightly spaced to resolve. The stars are about 360 light-years away and are orbiting one another with a period of 3,600 years. This double star, like many others, was given a single name centuries before telescopes revealed that there was more than one star there.
The brightest star in Hercules, Kornephoros “Club-bearer”, sits a fist’s width below the bottom right star of the keystone (just extend that side of the stone downwards). Only 3° (about two finger widths) to its lower right, is the double star Gamma (γ) Herculaneum, sometimes called Nasak Shamiya III. This is another pair that easily splits into two yellow stars in a modest telescope. But this double is an optical illusion. The fainter star is actually much closer to us!
Marsic “the Elbow”, or Kappa (κ) Herculaneum, is another “line of sight” double star that’s easy in a small telescope. It’s 4° to the lower right of Gamma Herculaneum. A few degrees further down brings us to the triangular head of Serpens (the Serpent), but that’s another story.
Immediately to the west of Hercules is a very distinctive constellation called Corona Borealis (the Northern Crown), and for good reason! A circle of seven stars forms a tiara festooned by a single bright star called Alphekka or “jewel”. The constellation is approximately a palm’s width across. In mythology, the crown was given to Princess Ariadne of Crete by Dionysus, who married her years after she helped Theseus escape the Minotaur. It, too, is one of the original Ptolemaic constellations. The Mikmaq people of Canada saw it as the den of the great celestial bear, while other cultures saw a string of jewels, a boomerang, and an eagle’s nest.
Most of Corona Borealis’ unaided-eye stars are variable. Alphekka is a hot, blue-white star 78 light-years away and similar in nature to Vega and winter’s Sirius, which are much closer. It is also an eclipsing binary star, in which a smaller orbiting companion star passes in front of the main star every 17.3 days, causing the combined light output to dim slightly. Astronomers have detected a dust disk around the star that might indicate that a new solar system is being formed.
The bright star further west of the crown is Arcturus. The fourth brightest star in the entire night sky, Arcturus means “Guardian of the Bear” in Greek, because it rises after Ursa Major (the Big Bear), which sits to its upper right (west). Arcturus is that colour because it is just passing middle-age for a star, starting on its way towards the red supergiant stage. In Chinese, Arcturus is known as Dà Jiǎo 大角, "Great Horn".
Sun, Moon, and Planets
The full moon, known as the “Buck Moon”, “Thunder Moon”, or “Hay Moon” occurred in the wee hours this morning (Sunday, July 9), so it will rise with a bit shaved off its eastern (our right) side on Sunday evening. Full moons always rise around sunset and set around sunrise, and the July one always sits near the Teapot-shaped constellation of Sagittarius.
For the rest of the week, the moon rises later - lingering into daytime morning skies, while it wanes towards Last Quarter next Sunday afternoon. Next weekend’s post-midnight waning moon leaves the evening sky darker. We can start to look out for early Perseid meteors. The Earth enters its debris field starting July 13. The peak won’t occur until next month, though.
(Above: Mercury is in the midst of a so-so appearance for observers in mid-northern latitudes. Here it where it is on July 14 at 9:45 pm local time)
Mercury continues to be visible for northern hemisphere observers this week. It sets about 10 pm local time, but the best time to look for it is shortly before 9:45 pm. It will be less than a palm’s width above the western horizon, south of where the sun went down, and will be the brightest object in that area of sky.
(This week, Venus, heading eastward towards the Sun, passes across the top of Taurus’ triangular face, shown here at 4:40 am local time on Wednesday, July 12. Watch for the Pleiades above and the other deep sky objects in the area.)
Extremely bright Venus is rises in the eastern sky about 3 am local time and remains an eye-catching beacon until dawn. This week, it travels eastwards above the stars that make up the triangular face of Taurus (the Bull), passing within three finger widths above the bright orange-ish star Aldebaran in mid-week. Viewed in a telescope around now, the planet presents a more than half illuminated phase. It will be in the morning sky for a few more months while becoming easier and easier to view.
Saturn is the bright yellowish object visible low in the southeastern sky after the evening sky darkens. It crosses due south (at its highest elevation of 24°) after 11 pm local time, and then sets in the west before dawn.
Jupiter is the extremely bright object in the southwestern evening sky this week. It sets about 12:30 am local time. The planet’s four large Galilean moons are easily visible in a small telescope. A larger telescope will also show the round black shadows they cast when they cross (or transit) the planet – and the Great Red Spot. Here are the best events in Eastern Daylight Savings Time. (Simply add or subtract the appropriate hours to convert them to your time zone.)
On Wednesday, July 12, Io's shadow will transit from dusk until 10:51 pm. On Sunday, July 16, Ganymede's shadow will transit near Jupiter's north pole from 10:17 pm until the planet sets (about 12:15 am). The Great Red Spot is visible on Jupiter for about three hours centred on Monday, July 10 at 8:44 pm (in twilight), Wednesday, July 12 at 10:24 pm, and on Saturday, July 15 at 12:03 am (while setting).
(Above: Saturn has seven major moons that can be viewed in backyard telescopes. Due to the planet’s axial tilt similar to Earth, we can see the rings tipped open, and the moons can appear above, below, and to either side of the planet. Shown at 11:30 pm EDT on Sunday night, July 9, 2017)
Distant Pluto, which resides among the stars of Sagittarius (the Archer), reaches maximum visibility for the year on Sunday, July 9. But at magnitude 14, it’s out of reach of all but the largest telescopes. The nearby full moon won’t help matters, but I posted a diagram here.
Keep looking up to enjoy the sky! I love getting questions so, if you have any, send me a note.
