We do NOT give Jackie Tyler and Mickey Smith their props for their character growth in the Parting of the Ways. Rose is absolutely amazing, an absolute ferocious beacon of hope and stubbornness and bravery in the finale, the absolute reason why the Doctor lives and the world is saved and an equal hero to Nine, but she has a moment of doubt. A moment of hesitancy.

And Mickey Smith and Jackie Tyler step in and help her save the day. Both Mickey and Jackie give up on their idea of Rose and their hatred of the Doctor and help her pull open the TARDIS. Even within this one episode we see them struggle with their feelings and decide to put them aside and help do this because Rose is right- this is a better way of living your life.

Doctor Who is about ordinary people making extraordinary decisions and making themselves extraordinary and this doesn't just apply to official companions (who I love with all my might)- it applies to the people they love, too. We see it over and over again in Davies' era, with Jackie and Mickey and Sylvia and Tish and Wilfred and Francine and Harriet Jones and every one-off character as well, from Lynda-with-a-Y to Jabe to Gwyneth to Novice Hame to McDonnell to Sally to Chantho to Nancy to all the rest.

Doctor Who is at its strongest when the story is focused on the strength of the bleeding, beating heart of humanity (and character in general, in its non-humans), when the characters drive the story, when at the end of the day you understand why, for all of the world's flaws, the Doctor comes back over and over again because of people like this- not just his companions, but the Jackies and Mickeys and all the rest of the world.

i love how even if bill managed to trick dipper into making a deal just like he tricked ford (both were inpatient and hungry for knowledge) dipper was saved because he trusted his sister and mabel trusted dipper. thatll be always the reason why ford loses things. he doesnt trust. he lost his family, he lost his lab partner, he even lost himself because he cannot trust anyone. ironically the only person he trusted was bill who was the one who tricked him. ford doesnt know how to and who to trust and thats why he lost all the time. after learning to trust his family, he was happy again.

something something it was about finding the right pace, their pace. from panicking and moving too slowly the first time, to rushing and throwing Po down on the couch the second time. until finally finding their pace somewhere in the middle of the others. it's "walk at your speed I'll catch up" and "how about we find a speed that works for both of us" but with intimacy

gwangshik swimming across the ocean to get to aesun lives in my head rent free but the build up to that scene is why it's so powerful. how it's pointed out that everything he's done since he was 10 has been for her, to give her a life she wanted and how he's literally leaving the island only because he thinks it's what she wants and he doesn't want to stand in her way but we see that losing her makes living seem futile to him. how we are led to think aesun cares about a career and education and that's why she's considering marrying that sleazy man but we learn it actually doesn't matter but love matters to her, a love she thinks she can't have since she doesn't want to stand in gwangshik's way, how he was her home but she was losing it because she couldn't be with him. we learn that she was never settling for him, she truly loved him and would have given up everything else to be with him just like he would do the same.

it's the way this show raises the question of what we choose in a partner and for the both of them, love mattered the most.

had I been a bystander watching their tearful reunion I would have been in tears because I woukd have felt the longing, the angst, the love. it's just so beautiful.
