in rewatching season 1, i have been reflecting on two things:

a) that it becomes easy, in later seasons, to forget that the 118 was not always a found family, didn’t always show up for each other in hard times, didn’t always view each other as a natural extension of blood family. they had to start somewhere.

b) we specifically see the 118, in hen and chim begins, where there is a complete lack of the kind of culture that leads to a found family dynamic. people don’t experience camaraderie and safety with each other, there are little to no easy jokes. people do not accept attempts at connection and friendship.

with this in mind, i’ve been rewatching season 1 very intentionally and mentally pointing out all the acts that create a found family. when characters show up for each other, it’s because they chose to show up, to prioritize each other. when someone cracks a joke, it’s an intentional act of building community and making others more comfortable. it’s a bridge reaching across to say Let’s be comfortable with each other. let’s laugh together. when hen and buck show up to bobby’s bare apartment because they haven’t heard from him in 48 hours, it’s not because the dynamic of buck and bobby is well established. it’s not because that’s just What They Do. it’s because they have intentionally chosen to care for bobby. when bobby pushes and doesn’t want help, they push right back because they have decided this relationship is worth investing in, not because the relationship already exists.

like it sounds stupid to say “i’m paying attention to a tv show” like it’s. abnormal. but i always go back to the kinds of sexist and racist jokes cracked when hen and chim started at the 118. they aren’t jokes to bring someone into a circle, but to firmly establish its boundaries and determine who Isn’t in the circle. or when chim has just lost his brother, and he tells tommy to Name what he’s into. whatever tommy likes, chim can do that. he can work with that. he’s extending this olive branch, saying I want this to work. and he gets so wholly rejected because tommy isn’t interested in building friendships. at all.

so then it’s so important when buck and hen play video games together. it’s important when chim wakes up in the hospital and the 118 is right there. it’s important when bobby talks to tatiana and asks her to be at the hospital. it’s important when bobby is getting ribbed about his dating profile, but without the intention of alienating him. all of this firmly establishes the kind of environment where these characters are allowed to share in their joys and sorrows together. where they can lean on each other. where they can joke and poke fun and not endanger these relationships. because the foundation was built with care and intention every step of the way.

I FINISHED PERSONA 5 AHHHHHH akira and akechi are fucking me up like something something about how you live your whole life like you're dying because your purpose is only for revenge hatred anger and more revenge revenge revenge until you finally meet someone who truly makes you feel something and genuinely wants you around BUT you are fated to kill this person and how in the face of death that maybe maybe maybe for the very first time, in such a LONG time, you want to fight for something - someone - else other than revenge revenge revenge but it's just beyond too late and yet maybe if you choose to die for this someone then perhaps in a twisted way he'll understand enough that all the moments you both shared together before are not entirely filled with lies - that there's love there despite everything, that there's love there even an ounce of it and that's enough for you. these gay bitches are ruining meeeeee!!!

akechi and ren make me beyond miserable like the whole premise of akechi's character just being centered around justice, HIS justice, and how it was twisted into something beyond recognition as he spiraled into a abyssal prison of jealousy and self-loathing and excruciating pain and ultimately died because he couldn't accept the fact that for someone who wanted to be loved so badly, he was indeed loved in return.

he was literally on fire and still said "i don't need your pity water, let me burn". like his destruction was his own choosing. and it's that final last ditch sacrifice that resembles a futile attempt at an apology for his death being the final outcome that actually makes me insane. like he was sorry that things had to end that way. like he was sorry they couldn't be anything more enemies.

hisoillus first hug ever was prompted by illumi while he was asleep. hisoka was already close and a sleeping illumi just wrapped his arms around him and pulled him close and hisoka froze the fuck up because he has NOT hugged anyone in.... decades

i like to think illumi hugs a pillow as he sleeps so he just ends up hugging hisoka without knowing and hisoka sits there for a good hour without moving a muscle not sure what the hell to do

If illumi wakes up he will either notice he was hugging hisoka or wouldnt notice bcs he wouldnt open his eyes until he'd untangled himself from hisoka already so hed be like. huh. it felt like i was hugging something while sleeping i wonder what that was. if he did notice tho jdsbgjbdgjdhgsj

I also think itd be INSANELY funny if illumi thinks hisokas his pillow while eepy and he just. wants to turn to the other side and ends up lifting hisoka with his entire strength and flips him to the other side with him and hisokas like ?????????????????????????????

have been thinking about professor sol even. professor bufo with no clearly discernable lesson plan. sol bufo ostensibly martial arts professor who spent two weeks running a yoga and meditation program and shows up to the next class with crochet hooks for everyone. professor bufo who is technically supposed to be assigning grades to students but hasnt given anyone less than an A because "i think they worked really hard and they did a great job :)" (referring to the ugliest and most malformed pot holder anyone has laid eyes upon in their life). professor bufo who is on his way to cluelessly kickstart the sexual awakening of about half the cohort of the academys new students. sol bufo adjunct professor who is gone half the year and his first class back is so immediately and easily baited into going into a long tangent about how cool his friends are. sol who is pretty sure hes easily the most useless professor on campus and almost cries when he sees his little desk overflowing with thank you notes at the end of the year. professor bufo absolutely fucking gloriously hot in the tightest little sweater vest because there were faculty complaints when he wore a crop top to class.

one really interesting thing about the Sui siblings is that their sibling age order isn’t so much about biological age but more about when they first managed to separate themselves from Sui and therefore how comfortable they are in their own individual identity (i’m far from the first person to point out that the Sui siblings are basically the opposite of the seaborne/We Many) - Shuo, the oldest brother is so secure in himself that he’s able to create a whole identity entirely separate from Sui, which is how we get Chongyue The Very Human Guy. Ling is able to defeat the Sui Xiang in invitation to wine with ease simply because she sees it as a shadow of herself, as opposed to Nian who sees the siblings as shadows and dreams of Sui. Dusk, the second youngest of the siblings, is so scared of the existential threat that is Sui that she has hid herself in her paintings and refused to sleep for centuries just to hide from it

… which makes me really want to meet the 12th brother (the cook) because if that is where Dusk, the 11th’s head is at i cannot imagine he’s having a good time either
